-In some situations, the system may not
function or its funct ion may be limited. For
example:
- I f vehicles a re approac hing o r be ing left
beh ind very quickly. The display may not
turn on in time .

- On very wide lanes, in tight curves, o r if
there is a rise in the road s urface. Vehicles
in the adjacent lane may not be detec ted
because they are outside of the sensor
range.

The se nso rs can be displaced by impacts o r
damage to the bumper, whee l housing and
underbody. This can impair the system . Have

Switching on/off

The system can be switched on/off in the Info ­

Setting the display brightness

The display brightness can be adjusted in the In ­
fotainment system.

The disp lay br igh tness adjusts automatically to
the brightness of the surroundings, both in the
information and in the warning stage. I n very
dark or very bright surround ings, the automatic
adjustment will set the display to the minimum or max imum level. In such cases, you may notice
no change when ad justing the br ightness, or the
change may only be noticeable once the sur­
r ound ings change.
Adjust the br ightness to a leve l where the display
i n the information stage will not disrupt your
v iew ahead. If you change the br ightness, the dis­
play in the exterio r mirror w ill br iefly show the
br ightness leve l in t he i nfo rmat ion stage . The
br ightness of the warn ing st age is linked to the
brightness in the information stage and is adjust ­
ed a long with the information stage .

A WARNING

system does not replace the attention of the

- The exit warning system can be available for
up to approximately three minutes after un­
locking the vehicle and opening the door as
well as after switching off the ignition . Then
the system switches off with a brief flashing
of the displays.
- The exit warning system cannot notify you
of every approaching object or person, such
as joggers or pedestrians .
A WARNING
The exit warning system is subject to limita­
tions and cannot warn you before every im­
pending coll is ion:
- If the veh icle is too wide for the parking
space and covered by the neighboring
veh icles.
- Approaching objects or peop le such as cy­
clists or skateboarders may not be detected
under certain circumstances.
- The system does not react to stat ionary ob­
jects.
- The view of the radar sensors may be im­
paired by leaves, snow, heavy spray or dirt .

tial collision with approaching cross-traffic when
driving in reverse at speeds up to approximately
9 mph (15 km/h) . Within its limits, the system

A WARNING
- The rear cross-traffic assist is an assist sys­
tem and cannot prevent a collision by itself.
The driver must always intervene. The driver
is always responsible for braking at the cor­ rect t ime.
- Please note that the rear cross-traff ic assist
may activate the brakes unexpectedly. Se­
cure a ny cargo that you are transpo rting to
reduce the r is k of damage or inju ry.
- Automatic braking cannot be triggered
aga in within 20 seconds afte r an a utomat ic
brake activation.
- If the re is a n acoust ic warning signal from
the rea r cross-traffic assist, then the park­
ing system may no t w arn you of detected
obstacles under ce rtain c ircumstances.
- The v iew of the radar sensors may be im­

Night vision assist
Description
Applies to: vehicles with night vision assist
The night vision assist can detect, highlight and,
if necessary, warn about pedestrians and large
wild animals.
N ight vision assist he lps yo u when it is dark by
u sing an infra red camera to mon itor the area in
front of your ve hicle, w ith in the limits of the sys­
tem . It ca n disp lay objects up to a distance of ap­
prox ima tely 1 000 feet (300 m). The thermal im ­
age de te cte d by t he came ra is show n in t he in ­
str ument cluster disp lay . Wa rm areas appear
li ghter and co ld areas a ppear da rker.

If there are pedestrians or wild an imals in an
area in front of your vehicle that is classified as
critical, the system will direct your attention to
th is:
- Pedestrians or wild anima ls are highlighted in
red in the instrument cluster and the corre­
sponding symbol. or. turns on

-There is also an audible signal.
The area classified as critical is based on the veh i­
cle speed and the steeri ng wheel angle . Pedes­
trian and wi ld animal warning enco urages you to
pay more attention .
If the night vision assist image is rep laced by an­
othe r display (such as the on-board compute r),
the red. or. in dicator light

If the head-up display* is switched on and the

Marking light*
To direct the driver's attention to a pedestrian,
the headlights can flash on the pedestrian three
times in a row when there is a pedestrian warn­ ing.
This occurs at speeds above approximately
35 mph (60 km/h) if you are outside of illuminat­
ed areas and no detected vehicles are shown. The
high beam assistant* controls the marking
light* <=>
page 44.
The marking light is not used for wild animals.

The following situations may affect the function
of the night vision assist system:
- Poor visibility such as snow, rain, fog or heavy spray
- Dirty lens on the night vision assist camera
Make sure the night vision camera <=>

structions because this can impair the night vi­
sion assist function . For information on cleaning,

page 351 .
The pedestrian and wild animal recognition de­
pends on the temperature difference between
the person/wild animal and the background . Peo -
~ ple/wild animals may not be detected if the dif-,.....
~ ference is too small. The pedestrian/wild animal N
8 marking and the marking light* deactivate at 0 :E ' Assistance systems
temperatures above approximately 77 °F (25 °C)
and during daylight. If the night vision assist im­
age is selected in the instrument cluster display,
then the
II symbol appears at the top on the
right side.
A WARNING
-Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when night vision assist is switch­
ed on. The driver is always responsible for as­
sessing the traffic situation.
- Night vision assist can only warn about peo­
ple and wild animals located within the visu­
al range of the infrared camera. The visual
range corresponds to the image in the in­
strument cluster display.
- Night vision assist may not detect people or
wild animals and mark them if
- they are not in an upright position, for ex­
ample if they are sitting or lying down
and/or
- the silhouette in the display appears in­
complete or interrupted, for example be­
cause the person is partially covered by a
parked vehicle or an animal is covered by
tall grass. This could increase the risk of
an accident.
- Never try to swerve around animals if doing
so will endanger you or other road users, be­
cause this increases the risk of an accident.
@ Tips
- Even though the system evaluates the
shape and heat given off by all detected ob­
jects, there are limits to the system . There
may be false warnings.
- For technical reasons, the image pauses in
split second intervals.

:E ' Air suspension *
The air suspension* is an electronically-control­
l ed air suspension and damping sys tem . The ad ­
justment depends on the driving mode selected, steering movements, the driver's braking and ac­
celerat ion, and as the road surface, vehicle speed
and load. The veh icle ground clearance depends
on the mode selected and the speed.
The ground clearance increases s ignificantly
when the vehicle is in the
All road mode . At
speeds from approximate ly 50 mph (80 km/h) to
75 mph (120 km/h), the ground clearance re­
duces in stages . When the speed decreases, the
g round clea rance increases again a utomat ically.
The ground clearance is the lowest in
Dynamic
mode.
Steering
The power steering adapts. Ind irect steer ing that
moves easily as in
Comfort mode is especia lly
suited to long drives on highways. The
Dynam ic
mode provides sporty, direct steering.
All-wheel steer ing*
All-wheel steer ing increases dr iving comfort by
providing add it ional steering ability at the rear
axle. Steer ing in the opposite d irection at low
speeds dec reases the turning rad ius. Steering in
the same d irect io n a t high speeds imp roves the
r e sponse t ime whi le increas ing dr iv ing stab ility at
the same time .
Sport differential*
As a componen t of the all wheel d rive system
(quattro)
~ page 146, the sport diffe rential dis­
tr ib utes the dr iv ing power to the rear ax le de­
pending on the situa tion. The dis tribution of
power var ies dependi ng on the selected mode
from moderate
(Comfort ) to sporty (Dynamic ).
The goa l is a high level of agility and ability to ac ­
celerate on curves . The veh icle is very responsive
to steer ing.
Adaptive cruise control (ACC)*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortab le to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode . Adaptive cru ise control a lso

responds to the driv ing behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner.
Engine sound*
T he eng ine sound adap ts to the c urren t mode
and can be subtle to sporty .

-Make sure there is enough clearance above
and below the vehicle when pa rk ing. The
height of the ve hicle (gro und clea rance) can
change once it is par ked due to temperature
fluctuations, changes to the load conditions
and changes to the dr iving modes.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car car ­
r ier, train, ship or by other means, o nly tie
the vehicle down at the runn ing s urface of
the ti res, which is the outer c ircumference.
Sec uring the vehicle at the axle compo­
ne nts , sus pension str uts o r towing eyes is
no t pe rm itted because the pres sure in the
air suspens ion s truts ca n change d uring
tr anspo rt . The ve hicle may not be secu red
sufficiently if this ha ppens.

You can change the driving mode when the vehi­
cle is stationary or whi le driving. If traffic per­
mits, after changing modes, briefly take your
foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recent ly
selected mode is a lso activated for the engine.
Offroad * or Lift/ Offroad* -activates offroad
functions to support driving on rough terrain .
The engine, transmission and steering adjust and
the Start/Stop system* switches off. Applies to
air suspension*: the vehicle also lifts for passing
over obstacles to maintain maximum ground
clearance.
Adjusting the Individual mode
