When detected in time, the system can assess
dangerous sit uat ions where an object a head
brakes suddenly or if your own vehicle is traveling
at a high speed and approaching an object that is
mov ing more slowly. The brak ing guard does not
react if it cannot detect the situation.
The system advises you of various dangero us sit­
uations :
- T he
distan ce warning occurs if you d rive too
closely to the object ahead for a long period o f
time . If the object ahead brakes strongly, you
would not be able to avoid a collision .
The.
indicator light appears as an indication for th is.
- The
app roach wa rning occurs when an object
ahead is traveling more s low ly or brakes
strongly. When th is warning occurs, it may on ly
be poss ible to avoid a co llision by swerving or
braking strongly . The danger is indicated by the
• ind icator light ~ fig . 99 . An aud io signal w ill
also sound .
If you do not react early enough or at a ll to a dan­
ge rous situation, the braking guard suppo rts you
w ith a brak ing intervent ion .
- If a co llision is imminent, the system will first
provide an
ac ute warning by braking sharply.
- If you do not react to the acute warning, the braking guard can increase the braking force
within the limits of the system

the veh icle speed in the event of a collision .
- The system can init iate comp lete decelerat ion
shortly before a collision
l l. Full deceleration at
high speeds occurs only in vehicles with adap­
t ive cru ise control and s ide ass ist (pre sense
plus).

not brak ing st rongly eno ugh whe n there is an
i mpending co llision, i t can increase the brak ing

accidents and ser ious personal inj uries. The
braking guard is a n assist system and cannot

- Always pay close atten tion to traffic, even
when the b raking gua rd is switched on. Be
ready to in tervene and be rea dy to take

ways keep the sa fe and legal distance be ­
tween your vehi cle a nd ve hicl es up ahead .
- B raki ng g uard works w it hi n limi ts a nd will
not respond o uts ide the system limits, fo r
examp le when approach ing a stopped veh i­
cle or stationary obstacle (end of a traff ic
jam or vehicle that has broken down in traf ­
fic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor for
the brak ing guard works only within def ined
detection and range limits that may prevent
the proper detect ion of other vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range can
be reduced by rain, snow and heavy spray.
Mov ing vehicles up ahead may not be
promptly de tected or may no t be detected
at a ll.
- Reflective surfaces includi ng crash ba rriers
or tunne l entra nces may impair the function
of t he ra da r se nso r.

Preventative passenger protection
Applies to: vehicles with Audi pre sense
P re sense can initiate steps to protect vehicle oc ­
cupants in certain dangerous situations. The
functions described are availab le depending on
ve hicle equ ipment:
Pre s ense basic*
The fo llow ing func tions can be t rigge red in cer ­
tain driving si tuations:
- T ension ing of the safety belts (for example,
dur ing heavy bra kin g): the fro nt safety belts
have reve rsible bel t tensione rs. If a coll is io n
does not occur, the sa fety be lts loosen slightly
and are ready to trigger again.
- C losing the w indows and the su nroo f* (for ex ­
amp le, when over -or understeer ing) : the win ­
dows and t he sunroof * close until there is only
a small gap open .
The funct io n of the p re sense basic is act ivated at
a speed of 20 mph (3 0 km/h) or hig her .
Dr ive se lect : t h e deployment time is adapted in
Dynami c mode.
Pre sense front (vehicles with adaptive cruise
control*}
Pr e sense front contains the f unct ions of p re
se nse bas ic. I n add it ion, the likelih ood of a rear ­
e nd collis ion with the veh icle ahead is also calc u­
l ated, withi n the limits of the system.
If the risk
of a collision is detected, t he fo llowing functions
can trigger :

- Tensioning of the safety belts

• Ready: the i ndicator light turns on whe n the
sys tem is ready for use . The sys tem can now be
ope rated .

system is switched o n but is i noperab le. Th is may
be due to the following reasons:
A ssi st a nce systems
- There is no lane marker line .
- The relevant lane mar ke r li nes a re not detec ted
(for examp le, m arkings in a construction zone
or because they are obstructed by snow, dirt,
wate r or light ing).
- The ve hicle speed is be low the activation speed
of approximate ly 40 mph (65 km/h) .
- The lane is too narrow or too wide .
- The curve is too narrow.
- The driver's hands are not on the steer ing
wheel.

This message appears if the came ra is unable to
detect the lines. This cou ld happen if :
- The camera field of v iew

dirty or covered in ice. Clea n this area on the
windsh ield .
- The camera field of v iew is fogged over . Wait
until the fog has cleared before switch ing the
active lane assist on again .
- The system has been unable to detect the lanes
for an extended period of time due to road con­
ditions. Sw itch act ive lane assist back on when
the lines are more visible.
Audi active lane assist : Currently unavailable
There is a temporary active lane assist ma lfunc­
tion . Try sw itching the act ive lane assist on aga in
la ter.
Audi active lane assist : System fault!
Drive to an autho rized Aud i dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunction corrected .
Audi active lane assist: Please take over steering
This message appears if you are not steering by
yourself . If th is is the case, active lane assist does
not switch off, but it is "not ready" to provide a
war ning. The system can help you keep the vehi-

cle in the lane . However, you are responsible for
driving the vehicle and must steer it yourse lf .
A WARNING
Note that messages may be de layed or not
displayed on vehicles with accessories mount­
ed on the steering wheel, such as a steering
wheel spinner knob. Always keep your hands
on the stee ring wheel.

Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist switches off automatically when a fac­
tory-installed trailer hitch is connected to the
electrical connector on the trailer . There is no
guarantee the system will sw itch off when using
a retrofitted trailer hitch. Do not use side assist
when towing a trailer.

The night vision assist can detect, highlight and,
if necessary, warn about pedestrians and large wild animals.
Night vision assist with pedestrian and wi ld ani­
mal detection assists you at night by using an

frared camera to monitor the area in front of
your vehicle, within the limits of the system. It can d isplay objects up to a distance of approxi­
mately 1000 feet (300 m). The thermal image
detected by the camera is shown in the instru­
ment cluster display. Warm areas appear lighter
and cold areas appear darker.

Assistance systems
The following situations may affect the function
of t he night vision assist system:
- Poor visibility such as snow, rain , fog or heavy
spray
- Dirty lens on the night vision assist camera
Make sure the night vision ass ist camera
¢ fig. 113 is not covered by stickers, deposits or
any other obstructions because that can affect
the camera function. For information on clean­
ing, see
¢ page 228.
The pedestrian and wild animal recognition de­
pends on the temperature difference between
the person/wild animal and the background. Peo­ ple/wild animals may not be detected if the dif­
ference is too small. The pedestrian/wild animal
marking and the marking light* deactivate at
temperatures above approximately 77 °F
(25 °()
and during daylight. If the night vision assist
im­
age is selected in the instrument cluster display,
then the
II symbol appears at the top on the
right side.
..&_ WARNING
Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when night vision assist is switch­
ed on. The driver is always responsible for as­
sessing the traffic situation.
- Night vision assist can only warn about peo­
ple and wild animals located within the visu­
al range of the infrared camera. The visual
range corresponds to the image in the in­
strument cluster display.
- Night vision assist may not detect people or
wild animals and mark them if
- they are not in an upright position, for ex­
ample if they are sitting or lying down
and/or
- the silhouette in the display appears in­
complete or interrupted, for example be­
cause the person is partially covered by a
vehicle or the animal is partially covered
by tall grass. This could increase the risk
of an accident.
- Never try to swerve around animals if doing
so will endanger you or other road users, be­
cause this increases the risk of an accident.

- Even though the system evaluates the
shape and heat given off by all detected ob­
jects, there are limits to the system. There
may be false warnings.
- For technical reasons, the image pauses in
split second intervals.

Audi drive select (drive
settings)
Introduction
Drive select makes it possible to experience dif ­
ferent types of veh icle settings in one vehicle .
The dr iver can se lect
Comf ort , Auto a nd D ynamic
modes in the I nfota inme nt system to switch be­
tween , fo r example , a sporty and a comfo rtable
driving mode .
I n the
Indi vidual mode, the sett ings can be ad­
justed to your perso nal preferences . This makes
it poss ible to comb ine settings such as a sporty
engine setting with light steering.
Description
The fo llowing systems, among other things, are
infl uenc ed by drive select:
Engine and automatic transmission
D epending on the mode, the e ng in e and auto ­
mat ic transmission respond more q uickl y o r in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
A ss istance systems
movements . In the sporty dynamic mode, the
transmission shifts at higher speed ranges .
Adaptive air suspension*
The adapt ive a ir suspens ion* is an e lectron ica lly ­
contro lled air suspens io n and dampi ng sys tem.
T he adjustment depends o n the dr iving mode se ­
l ected, steering movements, the driver's braking
and acce leration, and as the road surface, ve hicle
speed and load.
T he vehi cle ground clearance depends on t he
mode selected and the speed . When you are in
the
a uto mode, the highway setting is activated
when you dr ive above 75 mph (120 km/h) for
more than 30 seconds. The ground clearance is
increased automatically if the speed drops below
44 mph (70 km/h) for more than 120 seconds .
Suspension control*
With the Audi Dynamic Ride Contro l damping
contro l, dampening characteristics of the vehicle
can be individually adjusted us ing drive select.
This makes it possib le to satisfy the des ire for
sporty suspens ion (DYNAMIC) and comfortable
suspension (COMFOR T) without g iv ing up bal­
anced tu ning (AUTO) .
Steering
The power steering adapts. Indirect steering that
moves easily as in comfort mode is espec ially
su ited to long drives on a highway . The dynamic
mode provides sporty, direct steeri ng .
Applies to: vehicles with dynamic steering
The steering ratio changes based on veh icle
speed in order to maintain optimum steering ef­
fort for the driver at all times . Th is sets the steer­
i ng to be less sensitive at h igher speeds i n orde r
to prov ide improved ve hicl e cont rol. At red uced
speeds, stee ring is more d irect in orde r to keep
the steering effort as minimal as possible when
the driver is maneuvering the ve hicle. At low and
average speeds, dynamic steering * additionally
provides more responsive steering performance.
