Only a F.A.S.T.-key, which has been pro-grammed into the vehicle’s electronics, canlock and unlock all the doors, and start the engine. If you lose the F.A.S.T.-key, you can order aF.A.S.T.-key from your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer by referring to the key number. To prevent vehicle theft, the ID codes for allthe F.A.S.T.-keys except the one for the lost F.A.S.T.-key must be programmed again. NOTE
 The indicator light (5) comes on each time a button is pressed.  The keyless entry system does not work if the key is in the ignition switch.  The F.A.S.T.-key can be used from about 40 feet (12 m) away. However, this distance may change if your vehicle is near a TVtransmitting tower, a power station, or a radio station.  If the UNLOCK button (2) is pressed when all doors are locked and no doors are openedwithin about 30 seconds, the doors will auto- matically re-lock.  If the following conditions are observed after pressing the buttons on the remote control transmitter, the battery in the remote controltransmitter may need to be replaced.
• The doors cannot be locked or unlocked. • The trunk lid cannot be opened.• The panic alarm cannot be operated.• The indicator light (5) is dim or does not come on.
 If you lose your F.A.S.T.-key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for areplacement.  If you wish to obtain
an additional F.A.S.T.-
key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. A maximum of four F.A.S.T.- key can be programmed for your vehicle.  To use the new remote control transmitters, it is necessary to register the key with both theelectronic immobilizer and keyless entry sys- tem. Insert the key and turn it clockwise. The trunk lid will pop up
slightly. Lift it to
open the trunk. Press the trunk button (Vehicles with keyless entry system or F.A.S.T.-key) or OPEN switch (Vehicles with F.A.S.T.-key). (See

to slightly. Lift it to
open the trunk. Pull the trunk lid release lever, located to the left of the driver’s seat, up to open the trunk.
Trunk lid
WA R N I N G It is dangerous to drive with the trunk lid open since carbon monoxide (CO) gas can enter the cabin. CO is an invisible, odor- less gas that can cause unconsciousnessand even death. Do not allow children to have access to the trunk, either by climbing into the trunk from outside or through the inside of the vehicle. Always close the trunk lid whenyour vehicle is unattended. If trapped in the trunk, it is possible to escape from the trunk by using the in
side emergency trunk
release lever. (See “Inside emergency trunk lid release” on page 5-40.)CAUTION Do not stand behind the exhaust pipe when loading and unloading luggage. Heat from the exhaust could lead to burns.

Pull the trunk lid downward as illustrated. Gently slam the trunk lid from the outside sothat it is completely closed. Always ensure the trunk lid is securely closed.

The emergency trunk lid release is designed to provide a way to open the trunk lid frominside the trunk. It was developed to help pre- vent death and serious injuries to children who might become locked inside a vehicletrunk. The emergency trunk lid release lever (see illustration) is mounted on the trunk lid. The lever glows in the dark after exposure to sunlight. You and your family should familiarize your- selves with the location and operation of the emergency trunk lid release lever. Childrenshould be taught not to play in or around vehicles.
NOTE
 The trunk area light comes on when the trunk lid is opened, and goes out when it is closed.  The trunk area light remains illuminated for a certain period and then goes off automati-cally. Refer to “Interior light auto-cutout function (dome light and other lights)” on page 5-166.
To close
CAUTION Be careful to prevent catching anyone’s fin- gers when closing the trunk lid.
 Before starting the vehicle, be sure to con- firm that the trunk lid is closed. If the trunk lid opens while driving the vehicle, objects stored in the trunk could fall out onto the road.NOTE
 Gas struts (A) are installed in the locations illustrated to support the trunk lid. Please observe the following in order to prevent damage or faulty operation. • Do not touch, push or pull the gas struts when closing the trunk lid. • Do not attach any plastic material, tape, etc., to the gas struts. • Do not tie string, etc., around the gas struts. • Do not hang any object on the gas struts.CAUTION

If a hand or head subsequently gets trapped, a serious injury can result.CAUTION The safety mechanism is deactivated just before the door window closes. This allows the door window to close completely. There-fore be especially careful that fingers are not trapped in the door window opening. The safety mechanism is deactivated while the switch is pressed. Therefore be especially careful that fingers are not trapped in the door window opening. Do not deliberately trap your hands or head in order to activate the safety mechanism. Your hand or head could be trapped and per-sonal injury could result.
NOTE

If a hand or head is trapped in the closing sunroof opening, the safety mechanism willcause the sunroof to re-open automatically. The opened sunroof will become operational again after a few seconds.If the safety mechanism is activated 5 or more times consecutively, normal closing of the sunroof will be aborted.As an emergency measure, the sunroof can beclosed in small increments until it is com- pletely closed by repeatedly pressing the switch (2).After performing the emergency measure, consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
The sunshade can be opened or closed manu- ally while the sunroof is closed. When the sunroof is opened, the sunshade will also open automatically.

Sunshade

 Be sure to tilt down the sunroof before clos- ing the sunshade.  When leaving the vehicle unattended, be sure to close the sunroof and without the ignition key.  Do not try to operate the sunroof if it is fro- zen closed (after snowfall or during extreme cold).  Do not sit on or place heavy luggage on the sunroof or roof opening edge.  Do not apply any force that may cause dam- age to the sunroof.  Release the switch when the sunroof has reached a completely open or completelyclosed position.  If the sunroof does not operate when the sun- roof switch is operated, release the switch and check whether something is trapped by the sunroof. If nothing is trapped, have thesunroof checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.  Be careful when tilting
up the sunroof if a ski
carrier or a roof carrier is installed. Depend-ing on the model of ski car

To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop and fully engage the parking brake.For vehicles with a manual transaxle, move the gear shift lever to 1st (on a uphill) or “R” (Reverse) (on a downhill) position.For vehicles with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), set the selector lever to “P” (PARK) position.
When parking on a hill, apply the parking brake and turn the front wheels toward thecurb on a downhill grade, away from the curb on an uphill grade.
 Be sure to close the sunroof completely when washing the vehicle or when leaving the vehicle.  Do not put any wax on the weatherstrip (black rubber) around the sunroof opening. If it is waxed, the weatherstrip cannot maintain a weatherproof seal with the sunroof.  After washing the vehicle or after rain be sure to wipe off any water that is on the sun-roof before operating it.  Operating the sunroof repeatedly with the engine turned off will run down the battery. Operate the sunroof only while the engine is running.
Parking brake
NOTE
To apply 1- Pull the lever up without pushing the
button at the end of hand grip. When the parking brake is set and theignition switch is in the “ON” position, the brake warning light in the instru- ment cluster will come on. Before driving, be sure to release the parking brake.

the hand grip.

To adjust the steering wheel height, release the tilt lock lever while holding the steeringwheel by hand, and raise or lower the steering wheel to the desired height. After adjustment, securely lock the lever bypulling it upward.
CAUTION Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released and brake warning light is off. If you drive without the parking brake fully released, the warning display will appear onthe information screen in the multi-informa- tion display. If a vehicle is driven without releasing theparking brake, the brakes will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure.
