SmartKey
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
Ropen the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users.
Rget out and disrupt traffic.
Roperate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they:
Rrelease the parking brake.
Rshifting the automatic transmission out of
park position P
RStart the engine.
There is arisk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.
GWARNING
If you attach heavy or large object stothe
SmartKey, the SmartKey could be uninten-
tionally turned in the ignition lock. This could
cause the engine to be switched off. There is a risk of an accident.
Do not attach any heavy or large object stothe
SmartKey. Remove any bulky key rings before
insertingt he SmartKey into the ignition lock.
!Keep the SmartKey away from stron gmag-
netic fields. Otherwise, the remote control
function could be affected.
Strong magnetic fields can occur in the vicin-
ity of powerful electrical installations.
Do not keep the SmartKey:
Rwith electronic devices, e.g. amobile phone
or another SmartKey.
Rwith metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal foil.
Rinside metallic objects, e.g. ametal case.
This can affect the functionality of the Smart- Key. Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO startf
unction:do
not keep the SmartKey on the parcel shelf or in
the trunk.O therwise, the SmartKey may not be
detected, e.g. when startin gthe engine using
the Start/Stop button.
Ac heck which periodically establishes aradio
connection between the vehicle and the Smart-
Key determines whether avalid SmartKey is in
the vehicle. This occurs, for example:
Rwhen startin gthe engine
Rwhile driving
Rwhen the external door handles are touched
Rduring convenience closing

Locking/unlocking centrally
You can start, lock or unloc kthe vehicle using
KEYLESS-GO. To do this ,you only need carr ythe

KEYLESS-GO, for instance, and lock it using the
& button on the SmartKey.
The driver's door and the door at which the han-
dle is used, must both be closed. The SmartKey
must be outsid ethe vehicle. When locking or
unlockin gwith KEYLESS-GO, the distance
betwee nthe SmartKey and the corresponding
door handle must not be greater than 3ft(1m ).
Ab rief radio connection betwee nthe vehicle
and the SmartKey determine swhether avalid
SmartKey is in, or in the directv icinity of, the
vehicle. This occurs, for example:
Rwhen startin gthe engine
Rwhile driving
Rwhen using HANDS-FREE ACCESS
Rwhen the external door handles are touched

Important safetyn otes
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbo nmonoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the
trunk lid is open when the engin eisrunning,
especially if the vehicle is in motion. There is a
risk of poisoning.
Always switc hoff the engin ebeforeo pening
the trunk lid. Never drive with the trunk lid
open.
GWARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, the ycould slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is arisk of injury, particu-
larly in the eventofs udden braking orasud-
den change in direction.
Always store object ssothat the ycannot be
flung around .Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tippin gbeforet he
journey.
!The trunk lid swings upwards when opened.
Therefore, make sure that there is sufficient
clearance above the trunk lid.
The openin gdimensionsoft he trunk lid can be
foundint he "Vehicle data" section
(

You can limit the openin gangle of the trunk lid in
the multimedia syste m(see the Digital Opera-

Do not leave the SmartKey in the trunk .You
could otherwise lock yourself out.
You should preferably place luggage or loads in
the trunk .Observe the loading guidelines

The function of the electric parking brake is
dependent on the on-board voltage. If the on-
board voltage is low or there isamalfunction in
the system, it may not be possible to apply the
released parking brake.
XIf this is the case, only park the vehicle on
level ground and secure it to prevent it rolling
away.
XShift the automatic transmission to position
P.
It may not be possible to release an applied
parking brake if the on-board voltage is low or
there is amalfunction in the system. Contact a
qualified specialist workshop.
The electric parking brake performs afunction
test at regular intervals while the engine is
switched off. The sounds that can be heard while
this is occurringa re normal.
Applying or releasing manually
XTo apply:push handle :.
When the electric parking brake is applied,
the red F(USA only) or !(Canada
only) indicator lamp lights up in the instru-
ment cluster.
The electric parking brake can also be applied
when the SmartKey is removed.
XTo release: pull handle:.
The red F(USA only) or !(Canada
only) indicator lamp in the instrument cluster
goes out.
The electric parking brake can only be released:
Rwhen the SmartKey is in position 1or 2in the
ignition lock (Ypage 131) or
Rif the ignition was switched on using the
Start/Stop button
Applying automatically
The electric parking brake is automatically
applied when the transmission is in position P
and:
Rthe engine is switched off or
Rthe driver is not wearing aseat belt and the
driver's door is opened
To prevent the electric parking brake from being automatically applied, pull handle :.
The electric parking brake is also engaged auto-
matically if:
RDISTRONIC PLUS brings the vehicle to a
standstill or
Rthe HOLD function is keeping the vehicle sta- tionary
RActive Parking Assist is keeping the vehicle
stationary
In addition, at least one of the following condi-
tions must be fulfilled:
Rthe engine is switched off
Rthe driver is not wearing aseat belt and the
driver's door is opened
Rthere is asystem malfunction
Rthe power supply is insufficient
Rthe vehicle is stationary for alengthy period
The red F(USA only) or !(Canada only)
indicator lamp in the instrument cluster goes
out.
The electric parking brake is not automatically
engaged if the engine is switched off by the ECO
start/sto pfunction.
Releasing automatically
Your vehicle's electric parking brake is auto-
matically released if all of the following condi-
tions are met:
Rthe seat belt has been fastened.
Rthe engine is running.
Ryou accelerate and the transmission is in
position Dor R.
or
you shift the transmission position from Pto
position Dor R.Y ou will need to accelerate
more on steeper gradients.
If the transmission is in position R,the trunk lid
must be closed.
