Working in the engine compartment
Special care is required if you are working in the
engine compartment
F or wo rk in th e en gine c ompar tment su ch as
ch eckin g and fi llin g flu id s, th ere is a risk of in
j u ry , sca lding , acci dent s, a nd b urn s. Fo r this
re aso n, follow all the warnin gs and ge nera l
saf ety pr eca uti ons pr ov ided in the follow in g i n·
form ation . Th e e ng ine c ompartm en t is a d an
ger ous a re a .

A WARNING
- T urn the engine off.
- Switch the ign ition off .
- Set the parking brake .
- Place the selector lever in the P pos it ion.
- Let the engine cool down.
- Never open the hood when there is steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine compart
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned . Wait until no steam or coolant is
escaping .
- Keep children away from the engine com
partment .
- Never spill fluids on a hot engine. These flu
ids (such as the freeze protection contained
in the coolant) can catch fire .
- Avoid short circu its in the electrical system,
especially to the battery .
- When working in the engine compartment ,
remember that the radiator fan can sw itch
on even if the ign ition is switched off , which
increases the risk of pe rsonal injury.
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan sion tank when the eng ine is warm . The
cooling system is under pressu re .
- To protect your face, hands, and arms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a
large cloth when opening.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances. This increases the risk of
burns.
- If tests need to be performed w ith the en
gine running, there is additional dange r due

to moving components (such as the ribbed
be lt, alternator and radiator fan) and from
the high voltage ignition system.
- Do not press the acce lerator pedal inadver
tently if a gear is selected when the vehicle
is stationary and the engine is running. Oth
erwise, the vehicle will start to move imme
diate ly and this could result in an accident .
- Pay attent ion to the following warnings list
ed when work on the fuel system or on the
electrical equipment is required.
- Do not smoke .
- Never wor k near open flames .
- Always have a working fi re extingu isher
nearby
- All work on the battery or electrical system
in your veh icle can result in inju ries, chemi
cal burns, acc idents or burns . Because of
this, all work must be performed
onl y by an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility.
- To reduce the risk of electric shock and in
jury, never touch the following components
when the engine is running or is being start·
ed:
- Ign it ion cable
- Other components in the electronic high -
voltage ign ition system
- If you must check or perform work on the
engine wh ile it is running:
- Set the parking brake and place the selec
tor lever in the P (park) position first .
- Always proceed w ith extreme caution so
that clothing, jewelry or long hair do not
become caught in the radiator fan , fan
belt or other moving components or do
not come into contact with hot compo
nents. Tie back long hair before beginning
work and do not wear clothing that can hang down into the engine .
- Lim it your exposure to exhaust and chemi
cals to as short a time as possible

Care and cleaning
- Never use gasoline, spot remover, ben
zene, paint thinner or other solvents to
remove.
- Door window s
-Remove snow and ice on windows and ex-
terior mirrors with a p lastic scraper . To
avoid sc ratches, move the scrape r only in
one direction and not back and forth .
- Never remove snow or ice from door win
dows and m irrors using warm or hot water
because this could cause cracks to form.
- To avoid damage to the rear w indow de
fogge r, do not apply any stickers on the
heating w ires on the inside of the window.
- Decorati ve parts /tr im
- Never use chrome care or cleaning prod-
ucts.
-Paint
-To reduce the risk of scratches, the vehicle
must be free of dirt and dust before pol
ishing or waxing.
- To prevent pa int damage, do not polish or
wax the veh icle in direct sunlight .
-To reduce the risk of pa int damage, do not
polish away rust spots .
- Remove cosmetics and sunscreen immedi
ately- these could damage the paint.
- Instrument cluster
- Make sure that the instrument clus ter is
switched off and has cooled off before
cleaning it.
- The instr ument cluster and the trim sur
round ing it must not be cleaned w ith dry
cleaning methods because they could ge t
scratched.
- Make sure no fluids ente r th e spaces be
t ween the ins trumen t cluster and the
trim, because that could ca use damage .
-Control s
-Make sure that no fluids enter the con-
trols, because this could cause damage.
- Safety belts
- Do not remove the safety belts to clean
them .
- Never clean safety belts or their compo
nents chemically or with cor rosive flu ids
or so lvents and neve r a llow sha rp objects

- If there is damage to the webbing, the
connections, the retractors or the buckles,
have them replaced by an authorized Aud i
dealer or authori zed Audi Serv ice Facility .

rate . When the vehicle or parts of the re
straint system including airbag modules
safety belts with pretensioners are scrap
ped, all applicable laws and regulations

purchasing accessories.
Your vehicle incorporates the latest safety design
features ensuring a high standard of active and passive safety.
This safety could be compromised by non-ap proved changes to the vehicle. For this reason, if
parts have to be replaced, please observe the fol
lowing points when installing additional accesso
ries:
Approved Audi accessories and genuine Audi parts are available from authorized Audi dealers.
These dealers also have the necessary facilities, tools and trained specialists to install the parts
and accessories properly .
Consumer information
A WARNING
Using the wrong spare parts or using non-ap
proved accessories can cause damage to the
vehicle and serious personal injury.
- Use only accessories expressly approved by
Audi and genuine Audi spare parts
- These parts and accessories have been spe
cially designed to be used on your vehicle.
- Do not use license plate brackets in the
front area that are different from the one
installed at the factory, or add additional li
cense plate brackets.
- Never install accessories such as telephone
cradles or beverage holders on airbag covers
or within the airbag deployment zones. Do
ing so will increase the risk of injury if air
bags are triggered in an accident!
- Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, always read and heed all
WARNINGS Qpoge 235.

parts, add-on equipment and accessory
items are used or if repair work is not per
formed according to specified methods, this
can result in severe damage to your vehi
cle's engine and body (such as corrosion)
and adversely affect your vehicle's warranty.

authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible.
