Safe driving
_& WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles. To help reduce the risk of a loss
of control leading to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible .
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating
or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and hand le differently .
- Please observe information on safe driving
c';> page 181.
_& WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be­ cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the convertible top,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument pan-
el,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed .

Always make sure that the doors, all win­
dows, the convertible top and the rear lid are
securely closed and locked to reduce the risk
of injury when the vehicle is not being used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked.

Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­
cially with the rear lid left open. A child
could crawl into the vehicle through the lug­
gage compartment and close the rear lid be­
coming trapped and unable to get out . Be­
ing trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious
personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the vehi­
cle.
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage compartment . Vehicle occupants must al­
ways be properly restrained in one of the ve­ hicle 's seating positions.
{1) Tips
- Air circulation helps to reduce window fog­
ging . Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel, on the left
side of the luggage compartment. Be sure
to keep these slots free and open.
- The tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the tire
pressure label. The tire pressure label is lo­
cated on the driver's side B-pillar. The tire
pressure label lists the recommended cold
tire inflation pressures for the vehicle at its
maximum capacity weight and the tires that
were on your vehicle at the time it was man­ ufactured. For recommended tire pressures
for normal load conditions, please see chap­
ter
c';> page 257.
Tie -downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with four
tie-downs to secure luggage and other items .

In a coll is ion, the laws of physics mean that even
sma ller i tems that are loose in the vehicle will
become heavy missiles that can cause serious in ­
jury. Items in the ve hicle possess energy which
vary with vehicle speed and the weight of the
item. Veh icle speed is the most signif icant factor .
F or example, in a frontal collision at a speed o f
30 mph (48 km/h) , the forces acting on a 10 lbs
(4.5 kg) object are about 20 times the norma l
weight of the item. Th is means that the weight
of the item would suddenly be about
200 lbs (90 kg) . You can imagine the injuries that
a 200 lbs (90 kg) item flying freely th rough the
passenger compa rtment cou ld cause in a col li­
sion li ke this.

-
Wea k, damaged o r imp roper straps used to
secure i tems to tie-downs can fail during hard
braking o r in a collision and cause serious per ­
sonal injury.
- Always use su itab le mounting straps and
properly secure items to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or f ly ing fo rward as dan­
gerous missiles.
- Never attach a child safety seat tether strap
to a tie-down .

Safe ty belts
-Never remove a safety be lt while the ve hicle
is mov ing . Do ing so will increase your r isk of
being injured or killed.
- Never wear belts twisted.
- Never wear belts over rigid or breakable ob -
jects in or on your cloth ing, such as eye
glasses, pens, keys, etc., as these may cause
injury.
- Never allow safety be lts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat hard­
ware.
- Do not wear the shoulder part of the belt
under your arm or otherwise out of position.
- Severa l layers of heavy clothing may inter­
fere with cor rect positioning of belts and re­
duce the overall effectiveness of t he system.
- Always keep belt buckles free of anything
that may prevent the b uckle from latching
secu rely.
- Never use comfort clips or devices that cre­
ate slack in the shoulder belt. However, spe­
c ial clips may be requ ired for the prope r use
of some chi ld restraint systems.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in an acc i­
dent. Inspect belts regula rly .
If webbing,
bind ings, buckles, or ret rac to rs are dam­
aged, have belts repl aced by an auth orized
Audi dealer or quali fied workshop.
- Safety belt s th at have been wo rn a nd loaded
in an accident m ust be rep lace d wi th the
c orrect repl acemen t sa fety be lt by an au­
t h o rized Aud i dea le r. Replacement may be
necessary even if damage cannot be clear ly
seen. Anchorages that were loaded m ust al­
so be inspected.
- Never remove, modify, disassemble, or try
to repair the safety belts yourself.
- Always keep t he be lts clean . Di rty be lts may
not work properly and can impai r the f unc­
tion of the inertia reel¢

Automatic safety belt ret ractors
Every safety belt is equipped wit h an automatic
belt retractor on the shou lder belt . This feature
locks the belt when the belt is pulled out fast,
during hard brak ing and in an accident. The belt
may also lock when you dr ive up or down a steep
hill or through a sharp curve . During normal driv­
i ng t he belt lets you move free ly .
S afety belt pretensioners
The safety belts are equ ipped w ith a belt preten ­
s ioner that he lps to tighten the safety belt and
remove slack when the pretensioner is activated .
The function of the pretens ioner is monitored by
a war ning light¢
page 14 .
Convertible lock ing retractor
Every safety belt except the one on the driver
seat is equipped with a convertib le lock ing retrac-
tor that

Safety belt position.
- Safety belts offer optimum protection only
when the seatback is upright and belts are
properly positioned on the body.
- Never attach the safety belt to the buckle
for another seat. Attaching the belt to the
wrong buckle will reduce safety belt effec­
tiveness and can cause serious personal in­
JUry.
-A passenger who is not properly restrained
can be seriously injured by the safety belt it­
self when it
moves from the stronger parts
of the body into critical areas like the abdo­
men.
- Always lock the convertible locking retractor
when you are securing a child seat in the ve­
hicle

mum protection from safety belts.

- The shoulder belt should lie as close to the
center of the collar bone as possible and
should fit well on the body. Hold the belt
above the latch tongue and pull it evenly
across the chest so that it sits as low as pos­
sible on the pelvis and there is no pressure
on the abdomen. The belt should always fit
snugly

Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause se­
vere injuries.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri­
ous injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly posit ioned on the body .
Improper seating positions reduce the effective­ ness of safety bel ts and w ill even increase the
risk of inju ry and death by moving the safety be lt
to criti cal areas of the body . Imprope r seating
positions also increase the risk of serious injury
and death when an airbag dep loys and strikes an
occupant who is not in the correct seating posi­
tion. A driver is responsible for the safety of all
vehicle occupants and especially for children.
Therefore:
• Never pe rm it anyone to assume an incor rect
seated position in the vehicle while traveling

Safety belt tensioner
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear -end collisions above a
particular severity and in a rollover, safety belts ore tensioned automatically.
Pyrotechnic safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts are eq uipped w ith safety belt
prete nsione rs. The system is ac tiva ted by sensors
i n front, side and rear-end collisions of great se ­
verity and in a rollover . This tightens the belt and
takes up belt slack¢.&.

-Children on the front seat of any car, even
with Advanced Airbags, can be seriously in­
jured or even killed when an airbag inflates.
- Never let a child stand or kneel on the seat .
- Never let a child ride in the cargo area of
your vehicle.
-Always remember that a child leaning for­ ward, sitting sideways or out of position in any way during an accident can be struck by
a deploying airbag. This will result in serious
personal injury or death.
- If you must install a booster seat on the
front passenger seat because of exceptional

Securing child seats
Securing a child safety seat using a safety
belt
Safety belts for the front passenger con be
locked with the convertible locking retractor to
properly secure child safety seats .
The safety belt emergency locking retractor for
the front passenger's seat safety belt have a con­
vertible locking retractor for chi ld restraints . The
safety belt must be locked so that belt webbing
cannot unreel. The retractor can be activated to

lock the safety belt and prevent the safe ty be lt
webbing from loosening up during norma l driv­
ing. A chi ld safety seat can only be properly in­
stalled when the safety belt is locked so that the child and ch ild safety seat will stay in p lace.
Always remember : Even though your vehicle is
equipped with an Advanced Airbag system, a
child should always r ide in the seat properly re­
strained for its age and s ize.

Improperly installed ch ild safety seats in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury and
death in a co llision .

-Always make sure that the safety belt re­
tractor is locked when installing a child
safety seat. An un locked safety be lt retrac­
tor cannot hold the ch ild safety seat in place
du ring normal driving or in a c rash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat fi rm ly in
p lace even if a ch ild is not sitt ing in it. A
loose chi ld safety seat can fly around during
a sudden stop or in a co llision.
- If the backrest is not securely latched, the
child and the ch ild restraint will be thrown
forward together with the backrest and will strike parts of the vehicle interior. The child
can be seriously injured or killed.
- The inflating airbag will hit the ch ild safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child aga inst the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof.
- Forward-facing child safety seats or infant
carriers installed on the front passenger's
seat may interfere w ith the deployment of
the airbag and cause serious in ju ry to the
child.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS when­
eve r us ing a child restrained in a vehicle is

Always take spec ial precaut ions if you must
install a forward or rearward-fac ing ch ild re­
straint on the front passenger's seat in excep­
tional situations:
- Whenever a forward or rearwa rd-facing
child restraint is insta lled on the front pas­
senger seat, t he

system in the front passenger sea t and that
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~. light sig­
nals the correct front passenger frontal air­
bag status.

Forward-fac ing ch ild rest raints:
- Always make sure the forward-facing seat
has been designed and cert ified by its man­
ufact urer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side a irbag .

up, against o r very near the instrument pan­
el.
- Always move the passenge r seat into its
rearmost posit ion in the seat's fo re and aft
ad justment range , as far away from the a ir­
bag as poss ible before installing the for­
ward-facing chi ld restraint. The back res t
m ust be adjusted to an upr ight position.
- Ma ke sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF ~;
light comes on and stays on all the
time w heneve r the ig nition is switched o n.

w ill smash the child safety seat and child
aga inst the backrest, center a rm rest, door
or roof.
- Always be especially carefu l if yo u must in ­
stall a rea rward facing child safety seat on
the front passenge r seat in exceptiona l cir­
cumstances.
- Make sure that the

light comes on and stays on all the
time wheneve r the ign it ion is switched on.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light
does not come on and stay on, have the air­
bag system inspected by you r Audi dealer.
Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to secure a
child restraint.
A lways heed the chi ld safety seat manufacturer's
i nst ruct ions when insta lling a child restra int i n
yo ur vehicle. To activate the convertib le locking
r etractor:
.,. Place the chi ld restraint on a seat .
.,. Slowly p ull the belt
all the way out .

Checking and Filling
-Engine exhaust, some of its constituents,
and certain vehicle components contain or
emit chemicals known to the State of Cali­
fornia to cause cancer and birth defects and reproduct ive harm . In addition, certain flu­
ids contained in veh icles and certain prod­
ucts of compo nent wear con tain or emit
c hemicals known to the State of Califo rnia
to cause cance r and birth defects or other
reproductive harm .
- Battery posts, termina ls and re lated acces­
sories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and reproductive harms .
Wash hands after handling .

When fil lin g flu ids, be sure not to mix the flu ­
ids up . Otherwise severe ma lfunctions and en­
gine damage w ill occur .
@ For the sake of the environment
You shou ld regularly chec k the ground under
your vehicle in order to detect leaks qu ickly. If
there are visible spots from oil or other fluids,
bring your vehicle to an authorized Aud i deal­
er or author ized Audi Se rvice Facility to be
checked.
Opening/closing the hood
The hood is released from inside the vehicle.

-Never open the hood when there is steam o r
coo lant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that yo u could
be burned. Wait unt il no steam or coolant is
escaping.
- For safety reasons, the hood must always be
closed securely while dr iving . Because of
this, always chec k the hood after closing i t
to make sure it is latched correctly . T he
hood is lat ched if the front corners canno t
be lifted .
- If you notice that the hood is not latched
while you are d riving, s top imme diate ly and
close it, because d riving when the hood is
no t latched increases the r isk o f an accident .
