• Coolant temperature! Let engine run with
vehicle stationary.
Let the engine run at idle for a few minutes to

dicator. Always check the oil level regularly .
0 Alternator/vehicle battery
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being charg­
ed.
There is a malfunction in the alternator or the ve­
hicle electrical system .
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediately. Because the ve­
hicle battery is discharging, turn off all unneces­
sary electrical equipment such as the radio. See
your authori zed Audi dealer or authori zed Audi
Service Facility if the battery charge level is too
low .

while driving.
The starting ability may be impaired.
If this message turns off after a little while, the

Facility immediately to have the malfunction cor­
rected.
¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
The indica to r li ght II blinks when the turn sig­

If one of the turn s ignal bulbs on the trailer is
bu rned out or defect ive, the indicator l igh t will

System (OBD)
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The ma lf u nction ind icator lamp (MI L) Ill in t he
inst rument cluste r is pa rt of the On Board D iag­
nostic System (OBD II).
T he w arning/i ndic ator lig ht tu rn s o n when the ig ­
nition is switche d on and tu rns off once the en­
gine is starte d and is running in idle at a stab le
speed. This indicates t hat the MIL is f unctioning
correctly.
If the light does not turn off after starting the
engine
or t urns on while driving, this may ind i­
cate there is a malfunction in the eng ine. If the
i ndicator tu rns on, the catalytic conve rter may be
damaged .
Drive
with reduced engine performance (avo id
high speeds for extended periods of t ime and/o r
fast acceleration) and have the malfu nction cor­
rected . See an author ized Audi dealer or author ­
ized Audi Service Facility .
The indicator may turn on if the e lectronic speed
limiter is faulty . For addit ional information, see
¢ page 18, Electronic speed limiter .
The MIL may also turn on if the fuel filler cap is

The digital compass on ly works when the ignit ion
i s turned on. The directions are indicated with ab­
brev iat ions:
N (north), NE (northeast), E (east),
S E (southeast), S (south), SW (southwest), W
(wes t), NW (no rthwest).
(D Tips
To preve nt inaccurate compass read ings, do
n ot br ing any remote cont ro ls, elect rical dev i­
ces or metallic objects near the mirror.

Driving
Under certain circumstances, (such as driving in
the mountains or towing a trailer), it may be use­
ful to switch temporarily to the manual shift pro­ gram in order to manually adapt the gear to the
driving conditions
c::> page 71.
On inclines, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position
c::> page 65. This prevents the locking mechanism
from being loaded too heavily and will make it
easier to move the selector lever out of the P po ­
sition .
_& WARNING
-The vehicle can also roll when the engine is
stopped.
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause se­
rious injury.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running, ac­
tivate the parking brake and move the selec­
tor lever to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake when the en­
gine is running and the selector lever is in D/
Sor R or "tiptronic" mode is selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running .
- Never shift into R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"tiptron ic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.

- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicator lamp . illuminates

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these­
lector lever has securely engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
c::> page 159. Otherwise, any increase in en­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the ac­
celerator pedal while a driving gear is se­
lected. This can cause the automatic trans­
mission to overheat and can damage it. Set
the parking brake or press the brake pedal
to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when th@ engine
is stopped while the selector lever is in the
N position will damage the automatic trans ­
mission, because it is not lubricated under
those circumstances

- The transmission can overheat and be dam­
aged under certain driving and traffic condi­
tions such as frequent starts, creeping for a
long time, or stop-and-go traffic. If the.
indicator light turns on, stop the vehicle at
the next opportunity and let the transmis­
sion cool down

Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down hills.
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in the D or S position and you press
the brake pedal. The transmission automatically
selects a gear that is suitable for the hill. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach- ieved at the time of braking, within physical and ..,.

pollutants in the exhaust gas before they are re­
leased into the atmosphere.
The exclusive use of unleaded fue l is critically im­
portant for the life of the catalytic converter and
proper functioning of the engine .
~ WARNING
-The temperature of the exhaust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine.
- Never touch the exha ust ta il pipes once they
have become hot. This could result in burns.
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas
where the hot exhaust system may come in
contact with dry grass, brush, fuel spill or
other mater ial which can cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproof ing on or near the exhaust mani­
fold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or
heat shields. During dr iv ing, the substance
used for undercoating could overheat and
cause a fire.
(D Note
- Be aware that just o ne tank filling with
lead ed fue l will already ser iously degrade
the pe rformance of the catalytic co nverter .
- Do not exceed the correct eng ine o il level
c::;, page 164.
- Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
completely empty. The engine could mis­
fire. Unburned fuel could also get into the
exhaust system and th is cou ld cause the
c ata lytic converter to overheat.
- Do not turn off the ignition whi le the vehicle
i s mov ing.
- Do not continue to operate your veh icle un­
der these cond it ions, as otherwise fue l can
r each the cataly tic conve rte r. This cou ld re­
s ul t in ove rheating of the converter, req uir­
i ng its re placement.
- To assure efficient operation of the Em is ­

- Have your vehicle maintained properly and
in accordance with the service recommen­
dations in your Warranty

-Lack of proper ma intenance as well as im ­
p roper use of the vehicle w ill impair the
f u nct ion o f the emission control system
and could lead to damage.
® For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emiss ion Control System is op­
erating properly, the exhaust gas can have a
su lfur -like exhaust gas sme ll under some op­
erating states. This depends on the sulfur
content of the fuel being used. Us ing a d iffer­
ent brand of fuel may help, or f illing the tank
wi th lead-free supe r g rade gasoline.

Working in the engine compartment
Special care is required if you are working in the
engine comportment
For work in th e engine compartm ent su ch as
che cking and filling fluids, there i s a ri sk of in­
jury, scalding , accident s, and burn s. For thi s
reason , follow all the warnings and gene ral
s afety p re caution s prov ided in the following in·
formatio n. The engine compartment is a dan­
gerous area on the vehicle.

- Sw itch the ignition off.
- Set the parking brake .

- If the hood is not latched completely, it

- For safety reasons, the hood must always be
closed secu rely while dr iv ing. Because of
this, always che ck t he hood afte r closing i t
t o make sure it is latched correct ly. The
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted.
- If you notice th at the hood is not latched
while you are d riving, stop immediately and
close it, because driving when the hoo d is
not latched increases the risk of an accident .

-The oil pressure warning display. is not
an indicator of the oil level. Do not rely on
i t. Instead , check the oil level in your en­
gine at regular intervals, preferably each
time you refuel, and always before going
on a long trip.
- If you have the impression your engine con­
sumes excessive amounts of oil, we recom­
mend that you cons ult an autho rized Aud i
dealer to have the cause of your concern
properly diagnosed. Keep in mind that the
accurate measurement of oil consumption
requires great care and may take some
time. An authorized Audi dealer has instruc­
tions about how to measure oil consump­
tion accurately .

-Park the vehicle on a level surface.

- Shut the engine off when it is warm . Wait ap­
proximate ly two minutes so that the engine oil
can flow back into the oil pan.
- Open the hood c:::>

way in again.
- Remove the oil dipstick again and then read the
