The instrument illumination for the needles
and dials turns on when the ignition is turned
on and the lights are turned off. The illumina­
tion for the gauges reduces automat ica lly and
eventually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases . This function reminds the driver to
turn the low beams on at the appropriate
time.

on. To prevent engine damage, please observe
the following notes about the temperature rang­
es.
Cold range
If the needle is at the bottom of the gauge, the
engine has not reached operating temperature
yet. Avoid high eng ine speeds, full accelerating
and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine has reached operating temperature
when the needle moves into the center of the
gauge under norma l driving condit ions. The nee­
dle may move farther to the right on the gauge
with heavier engine load at hig h outside temper ­
atu res . This is no cause for concern as long as the
• indicator light in the instrument cluster does
not turn on.
If the needle is far over on the r ight side of the
gauge and the. indicator light turns o n in the
i nst rument cluster, then the coolant tempera­
ture is too high

CD Note
- Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy en-
gine load.
- The front spoiler also helps to distribute
cooling air correctly wh ile driving. If the
spo iler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impai red and the risk of the engine over­
heating will increase. See an authorized
A udi dealer or authori zed Aud i Service Fa­
cility for assistance .
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev ­
olutions per minute
(RPM).
You shou ld shift to the next lowest gear when
the eng ine speed is be low 1,500 RPM. The beg in­
ning of the red zone in the tachometer indicates
the maximum permissible engine speed for all
gears once the engine has been broken in and
when it is warmed up to operating temperature.
Before reaching this zone, you should sh ift into
the next highest gear, select the D selector lever position, or remove your foot from the accelera­
tor pedal.

Neve r dr ive until the tank is comp lete ly emp­
ty. The irregu la r supply of fuel that res ults
from that can cause engine misfires . Uncom­
busted fuel w ill then enter the exhaust sys­
tem. This can cause overheat ing and damage
to the catalyt ic converter.
Time/date display
You can switch between the quartz clock or the GPS controlled clock* depend ing on the vehicle
equipment. For mo re information, refe r to you r
MM I Operating Manual.
Outside temperature display
T he instrument cluster display shows the outside
temperature. At temperatures be low 42 °F ( +S
°C), a snowflake symbo l appears in front of the
temperature display.
If your vehicle is stationary or if you a re driving at
very low speeds, the temperature displayed may be slight ly higher than the actual temperature
o utside due to the heat radiating from the en ­
gine.
A WARNING
.-
Do not assume the roads are free of ice based
on the outside temperature d isplay. Be aware
that there may be ice on roads even when the
outside tempe rature is a round 42 °F (+5 °C)
a nd that i ce can increase t he risk of a cc idents.

There is a malfunction in the parking brake. Drive
to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.

• Turn off engine and check coolant level.
The coolant level is too low.
Do not continue driving and switch the engine
off. Check the coolant level¢
page 166.
-If the coolan t level is too low, add coolant
¢page 166. Only continue driving once the in ­
dicator light turns off.
• Coolant temperature! Let engine run with
vehicle stationary.
Let the engine run at idle for a few minutes to
cool off, until the indicator light turns off.
- If the indicator light does not turn off, do not
continue driving the vehicle. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
for assistance.
.&_ WARNING
- Never open the hood if you can see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine compartment . This increases the risk of
burns. Wait until you no longer see or hear
steam or coolant escaping .
- The engine compartment in any vehicle can
be a dangerous area. Stop the engine and
allow it to cool before working in the engine
compartment. Always follow the informa-

Stop the engine and do not continue driving.
Check the engine oil level

- If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil

dicator light turns off.
- If the engine oil level is correct and the indica­
tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. See an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
sistance.
(D Tips
The oil pressure warning is not an oil level in­
dicator. Always check the oil level regularly .
0 Alternator/vehicle battery
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being charg­
ed.
There is a malfunction in the alternator or the ve­
hicle electrical system .
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediately. Because the ve­
hicle battery is discharging, turn off all unneces­
sary electrical equipment such as the radio. See
your authori zed Audi dealer or authori zed Audi
Service Facility if the battery charge level is too
low .
r•j low battery charge: Battery will be charged
while driving.
The starting ability may be impaired.
If this message turns off after a little while, the
vehicle battery charged enough while driving. ..,_

E quipment that uses a lot of electricity is switch­
ed off temporari ly when you start the engine.
I f the engine does not start im mediately, stop
the s tart ing proced ure and repeat afte r 30 sec­
onds. To restart the engine, t urn the ignition key
back to position @.
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ignition key from the igni­
tion look while the vehicle is moving. Other­
wise, the steering lock could suddenly en­ gage and you would not be able to steer the
vehicle .
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the engine
could be started or electrical equ ipme nt
such as the power windows cou ld be operat­
ed . T his can lead to serious injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doo rs can be loc ked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing people from escap ing
from the vehicle on the ir own in the event o f
an emergency. Depend ing on the t ime of
year, peop le inside the vehicle can be ex­
posed to very high or very low tempera­
tures .
(D Note
Avoid high engine speed, full throttle, and
heavy engine load if the engine has not
reached operating temperature yet. You could
damage the engine.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately . This re­
duces unnecessary emissions.
(D Tips
- If it is difficu lt to turn the key to position
(D, turn the steering wheel back and forth
slightly to release the steering wheel lock .
- Some noise after starting the engine is nor­
mal and is no cause for concern.

The locked steering helps prevent vehicle theft.
A WARNING ....._ --Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steer ing is not guaranteed. You must use
more force to turn or brake if necessary. Be­
cause yo u cannot stee r and brake as you
usually would, th is could lead to crashes
and serious injuries .
- For safety reasons, you should always park
your veh icle w ith the selector lever in P.
Otherwise, the vehicle could inadvertently
ro ll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run for up
to 10 minu tes even after you have turned
off the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the
engine coolant heats up because of intense
sunlight or heat build-up in the eng ine com­
partment.
- Always take the key with you whenever you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment
such as the power windows could be operat­
ed. This can lead to ser ious injury.
- Never leave children or persons requ iring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle . The
doors can be locked using the remote t rans­
mitter, preventing people from escaping
from the vehicle on their ow n in the event of
an emergency . Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be

Trailer towing
Sp eed
The higher the speed, the more d ifficult it be­
comes for the driver to contro l the rig. Do not
dr ive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, w eather or wind
conditions are unfavorable -particularly when
going downhill.

Do not try
to stop the swayin g by ac cele rating.
Observe speed limits . In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for reg ular
ve hicles.
A lways apply b rakes early . When dr iving down­
hi ll, shi ft into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperatu re gauge ¢ page 8 must
be observed ca refully . If the needle moves close
to the upper end of the scale, reduce speed im ­
mediately and/or turn off the air conditioner .

A WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­
dent . Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wearing the restraints provided
by Audi .
Trailer towing
information
Important to know
Your veh icle hand les different ly when tow ing a
tra iler because of the additional weight and dif ­
fe rent weight d istr ibut ion . Safety, performance
and economy w ill great ly depend on how careful­
ly you load you r trailer and operate your rig .

Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract icing unt il yo u h ave be ­
come comp lete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi­
cle-tra iler combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice .
Backing up w ith a trailer generally req uires steer ­
i ng action opposite to that when backing up your
vehicle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you . You will need more
room to stop. To compensate for the trailer, you
will need a larger than normal turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accel­ erate as fast as you normally wou ld because of
the added load. Make sure you have enough room
to pass. After passing, allow p lenty of room for
your trailer before changing lanes again.
Avo id jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.
(D Tips
- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in peri­
od of your veh icle.
- If you tow a trai ler, your Audi may requi re
more frequent maintenance due to the ex­
tra load

' Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot
be avoided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:

.,. Have someone place cho cks under bot h the ve­
hicle and the trailer wheels .
.,. With choc ks in place, slowly release the brakes
until the wheel chocks absorb the load.
.,. Turn the wheels towards the curb .

When restarting after parking :

pollutants in the exhaust gas before they are re­
leased into the atmosphere.
The exclusive use of unleaded fue l is critically im­
portant for the life of the catalytic converter and
proper functioning of the engine .
~ WARNING
-The temperature of the exhaust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine.
- Never touch the exha ust ta il pipes once they
have become hot. This could result in burns.
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas
where the hot exhaust system may come in
contact with dry grass, brush, fuel spill or
other mater ial which can cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproof ing on or near the exhaust mani­
fold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or
heat shields. During dr iv ing, the substance
used for undercoating could overheat and
cause a fire.
(D Note
- Be aware that just o ne tank filling with
lead ed fue l will already ser iously degrade
the pe rformance of the catalytic co nverter .
- Do not exceed the correct eng ine o il level
c::;, page 164.
- Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
completely empty. The engine could mis­
fire. Unburned fuel could also get into the
exhaust system and th is cou ld cause the
c ata lytic converter to overheat.
- Do not turn off the ignition whi le the vehicle
i s mov ing.
- Do not continue to operate your veh icle un­
der these cond it ions, as otherwise fue l can
r each the cataly tic conve rte r. This cou ld re­
s ul t in ove rheating of the converter, req uir­
i ng its re placement.
- To assure efficient operation of the Em is ­
s ion Control System:
- Have your vehicle maintained properly and
in accordance with the service recommen­
dations in your Warranty
& Maintenance
booklet.

Ch eck ing and Filling
-Lack of proper ma intenance as well as im ­
p roper use of the vehicle w ill impair the
f u nct ion o f the emission control system
and could lead to damage.
® For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emiss ion Control System is op­
erating properly, the exhaust gas can have a
su lfur -like exhaust gas sme ll under some op­
erating states. This depends on the sulfur
content of the fuel being used. Us ing a d iffer­
ent brand of fuel may help, or f illing the tank
wi th lead-free supe r g rade gasoline.

Working in the engine compartment
Special care is required if you are working in the
engine comportment
For work in th e engine compartm ent su ch as
che cking and filling fluids, there i s a ri sk of in­
jury, scalding , accident s, and burn s. For thi s
reason , follow all the warnings and gene ral
s afety p re caution s prov ided in the following in·
formatio n. The engine compartment is a dan­
gerous area on the vehicle.

A WARNING
-- T urn the engine off.
- Sw itch the ignition off.
- Set the parking brake .
- Move the selector lever into t he P position .
- Neve r open the hood whe n there is steam o r
coo lant escaping from the engine compart ­
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned. Wait unt il no steam or coolant is
escaping.
- Let the eng ine cool down.
- Keep children away from the eng ine com -
partment.
- Never sp ill fluids on a ho t engine. These flu ­
ids (such as the anti -freezing agent con ­
tained in the coolant) can ignite .
- Avoid short c ircui ts in the elect rical sys tem.
- W hen working in the engi ne comp artme nt,
remember that the radiator fan can swi tch

Add more coolant if necessary.
~ Close the cap securely.
Coolant loss usually indicates there is a leak. Im­
mediately drive your vehicle to an authorized
Audi dealer or authori zed Audi Service Facility
and have the cooling system inspected. If the
cooling system is not leaking, a loss can come
from the coolant boiling through overheating
and be ing pushed out of the cooling system.
.&, WARNING
The cool ing system is pressu rized and can be­
come very hot. To reduce the r is k of burns
from hot coolant :
- Do not open the coo lant expansion tank cap
when the engine is hot. This increases the risk of burns.
- Stop the engine and allow it to cool.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from es -
caping coolant and steam by covering the
coolant tank cap with a large, thick cloth .
- T urn the coo lant tank cap co unterclo ckwise
slowly and keep light pressu re on the cap .
- T o reduce the risk of burns , do not allow any
antifreeze o r coolant to drip onto the ex­
haust system or hot engine components.
T he ethylene glycol in engine coolant can
catch fire under certain circumstances .
- T he coo lant add itive and the coolant can be
dangerous to your health . For this reason,
keep the coolant in the original container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poisoning.
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched off, which
increases the risk of injury .
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty. Air could enter the cooling system and
damage the engine. If this is the case, do not
cont inue driv ing . See an authorized Audi deal -

er or authorized Aud i Service Facility for assis ­
tance .
- Before the start of winter, have your author­
ized Aud i dea ler or a uthorized Audi Serv ice
Facility check if the coolant additive in your
vehicle matches the percentage appropriate
for the climate. This is especially important
when driving in colder climates.
- If the appropr iate coo lant add itive is not
availab le in an emergency, do not add any
other additive . You could damage the en­
gine. If this happens, only use water and re­
store the correct m ixtu re ratio with the
specified coolant add it ive as soo n as poss i­
ble .
- Only refill w ith new coolant.
- Radiator sealant must not be mixed with
the coolant .
Radiator fan
T he radiator fan switches on automatically by it ­
self.
An auxiliary e lectr ic radiator fan switches on and
off depend ing on coolant temperature and other
vehicle operating conditions.
After you switch the engine off, the auxiliary fan c a n continue running for up to 10 m inutes - even
with the ignition off . It can even switch on aga in
later by itself ¢.& , if
- the temperature of the engine coolant rises due
to the heat build-up from the engine in the en­
gine compartment, or
- the engine compartment heats up bec ause the
veh icle is parked in in tense sunlight.

- To reduce the r isk of personal injury never
touch the radiator fan .
- The auxiliary e lectr ic fan is temperature
controlled and can switch on s uddenly even
when the engine is not runn ing .
- The auxiliary radiator fan sw itches on auto ­
mat ica lly when the eng ine coolant reaches a
certa in temperature and will continue to run
until the coolant temperature d rops .

the warranty period.
Above all , ope rational safety can be adversely af­
fected, cre ating unnecessa ry risks fo r yo u and
your passengers.
I f in doubt about any se rvicing, have it done by
your author ized Audi dealer or any other prope rly
eq uipped and qua lified workshop. We strongly
urge you to g ive your author ized Audi dealer the
opportunity to perform a ll scheduled mainte­
nance and necessary repairs. Your dealer has the
fac ilities, original parts and trained specialists to
keep your veh icle running properly .
Pe rforming limit ed ma intenance yourself
The fo llow ing pages describe a limited number of
procedures which can be performed on your vehi­
cle with o rdinary tools, should the need arise and
tra ined personnel be unavailable. Before per­
forming any of these procedures, always thor­
ough ly read a ll of the app licab le text and careful­
ly follow the instructions g iven . Always rigorously
observe the
WARNINGS prov ided .
Before you check an ything in the eng ine com ­
partment, alw ays read and heed all WARNINGS
c::> .&. and c::> .&. in Working in the engine compart­
ment on page 159 .
Consumer inf ormation
A WARNING
- Ser ious personal in jury may occur as a result
of improperly performed maintenance, ad­
justments or repairs .
- Always be extremely careful when work ing
on the vehicle. Always follow commonly ac­
cepted safety practices and general com­ mo n sense. Never risk pe rsonal injury.
- Do not attempt any of the mai ntenance,
checks or repairs described on t he following
pages if you are not fu lly familiar wi th these
or other proce dures with respect to the ve­
h icle, o r are uncerta in how to pro ceed.
- Do not do a ny work withou t the prope r tools
a nd eq uipment. H ave the necessary wo rk
done by your au thorized Audi dealer or an­
other proper ly equipped and qualified work ­
shop.
- The engine compa rtment of any motor ve hi­
cle is a potent ially hazardous area . Never
reach into the area around or touch the radi­
ator fan.
It is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly - even when the en­
g ine is off and the ignition key has been re­
moved. The rad iator fan switches on au to­
mat ica lly when the coo la nt reaches a certain
tem perature and will continue to r un until
the coolant tem pera ture drops.
- Always remove t he ignition key befo re any­
one gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your veh icle with safety
s tands if i t is necessary to work u nder neat h
the vehicle . The jack* s upplied w ith the vehi­
cle is not adequate fo r this purpose and
could collapse caus ing serious personal in ­
jury.
- If you m ust wor k unde rneath the vehicle
with the w heels on the g round, always make
sure the vehicle is on level ground, that the
wheels a re always sec urely blocked and that
the engine cannot be started.
- Always make sure the transmission se lector
lever (automatic transmiss ion) is in P (Park
position) and the park brake is applied.
