A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in ¢ page 193,
before opening t he hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
firstsothatyoucannothearo rseeany
steam or engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At h igh outside temper­
atu res or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter )
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates maximum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period. Be­
fore reaching this area, move the selector lever
to position D/5 or ease your foot off the accelera­
tor pedal.

should only briefly be in the red zone: you
could damage your eng ine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

The !SET I button performs the following func­
tions:
Switching on time, date, temperature
display and odometer
The display appears for approximately 30 sec­
onds when you press the
ISETI button¢ fig . 4
with the ignition off.
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain indiv idual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
! SET I but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is stat ionary and the ignition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h).
In addition, the number of keys initialised for
your vehicle is displayed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have been initialised . This feature e na­
bles used car buye rs to make su re they have re­
ceived all of the keys.
If you are given only two keys , for instance , you
should take the veh icle and the existing keys to
an authorized Audi dealer to have the missing key
disabled. It is also important to notify your insur­
ance company about the loss.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ISETI button briefly, you can set
threshold 1 of the speed warning wh ile you are
driv ing
¢ page 78. By ma intaining pressure on IJ,,

Depending on the vehicle equipment level, you
may choose between the quartz clock or the
GPS
controlled clock* l!j in the radio or in the MMI *.
You can learn more about this in the MMI manual
or in the rad io user 's manual.
Odometer /t ri p odomete r
The display of distance driven is shown in kilome ­
ters "km" or in miles "mi".
- USA mode ls - Miles
- Canada models - Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can be changed in the radio or MMI* . You can learn
mo re about this in the MMI manual or in the ra­
d io user's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of kilo ­
meters or miles that have been driven on the ve­
h icle .

The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset.
It can be used to measure
short distances. The last digit shows distances of
100 meters or 1/10 of a mile .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by press ­
ing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhe re in the in­
strume nt cluster,
DEF w ill appear in the tr ipod­
ometer and w ill stay on. Contact yo ur authorized
Aud i dealer to have the prob lem corrected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on the
i gnition key are scan ned automat ica lly .
If an unauthor ized key was used,
SAFE is d is·
played permanently in the odomete r display

- When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odometer
and tempe rature are displayed for an addi­

Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on.

Neve r run the tan k comp letely dry! An ir regu­
l a r supply of fuel can cause eng ine misfiring

appears, there is an electronic steering column lock malf unction . You cannot switch the ignition
on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because i t cannot be
steered. Seek professional assistance.

Your vehicle must not be towed in the eve nt
of a malfunction i n the elect ronic steering
co lumn lock be ca use it cannot be steered d ue
t o the locked steering. If it is towed wi th t he
steering locked, the re is the r isk of an acci ­
dent .

!;. J[/; Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the bJ ind icator light blinks while driving , the
ESC o r ASR (A nti-Sl ip Regulation) is act ively regu­
l ating .
If the
bJ ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, you can switch
t h e ign it io n off and then on to swi tch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly .

stri cted or sw itched off using the

turn o n and the message appears, the ABS or
electron ic different ial lo ck is malfunctioning.
This also causes the ESC to malfunc tion. The
brakes st ill function with the ir norma l power, but
ABS is not active .

A WARNING
If the 11111 (USA models)/ . (Canada mod­
e ls) br ake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulating function may have
failed. F unctions that stabilize the vehicle are
no longer ava ilab le. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding. Drive carefully to the nearest authorized Aud i
dealer and have the malfunction corrected .

Opening and closing
Central locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You
have the following choices:
- Remote master key ¢
page 30,
-Door handles with convenience key*
O?page 30,
-Lock cylinder at the dr iver's door ¢ page 32,
or
- Power lock ing switch ins ide ¢
page 31.
Automatic lo cking
The automat ic locking feature locks all the vehi­
cle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster
than 9 mph ( 15 km/h) .
The car is unlocked again once the ignition key is
removed . In addition, the veh icle can be unlocked
if the opening function in the power locki ng sys ­
tem sw itch or at one of the door levers is actuat­
ed. The A uto Lock funct io n can be tu rned on and
off in the rad io or MM I*
¢ page 32.
Additionally, in the event of a crash with airbag
deployment the doors are automatically un­
l ocked to allow access to the veh icle.
Selective unlocking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys­
tem will lock the doors and the rear lid . When
unlocking, yo u can set in the rad io or MMI*
whether
only the d river 's doo r o r the entire vehi­
cle shou ld be un loc ked
¢ page 32.
Anti-theft alarm w arning system
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the vehicle, acoust ic and visual
warn ing s ignals a re triggered.
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto­
mat ically when you lock the vehicle. It is deact i­
vated when unlocking using the remote key, with the mechanical key, and w hen you switch on the
i gnit io n.
Op ening and cl osing
The alarm also t urns off when the alarm cycle has
expi red.
Turn signals
When you unlock the veh icle, the turn s ignals
flash twice, when yo u lock it once. If they do not
flash, one of the doors, the l uggage compa rt­
ment lid or the hood is no t locked or the ignition
is still switched on.
Unintentionally locking yourself out
In the following cases there safeguards to p re­
ven t you locking your remo te mas te r key in the
vehicle:
- The vehicle does not loc k w ith the power lock­
ing sw itch
¢ page 31 if the d river 's doo r is
open.
- On veh icles with co nvenience key*, if the most
re cent ly used master key is in the l uggage com­
pa rtment, the rear lid is a utomatically unlocked
aga in after it is closed.
Do not lock your veh icle w ith the remote master
key or conven ience key* until all doors and the
rea r lid are closed . In this way yo u avoid loc king
yoursel f out acc identally .
A WARNING
=
-When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you. This
will prevent passengers (children, fo r exam­
ple) from accidentally being locked in the
veh icle should they accidentally press the
power locking sw itch in the front doors.
- Do not leave children ins ide the vehicle un­
supervised . In an emergency it would be im­
possible to open the doors from the outside
without the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash wit h airbag dep loy­
ment all locked doors will be automatically
unlocked to give access to the vehicle occ u­
pants from the o utside.
- If the power locking system sho uld mal­
function, you can lock the driver's door us­ ing the mechan ica l key ¢
page 32.

- If the power locking system should fail, you
can still open the fuel tank flap in an emer­
gency ¢
page 192.
-You are well advised not to keep val uables
inside an unatte nded vehicle, v is ible or not.
Even a properly locked vehicle cannot pro­
v ide the security of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driver's
door panel comes on for about 30 seconds
after t he vehicle is locked, there is a mal­
funct ion in the power lock ing or the anti­
theft warning system . Have the malf unct io n
cor rected by an authorized Audi dealership
or q ualified repair facility.

The emergency key is not intended for constant
use . It shou ld only be used in an emergency, for
example, in place of the ign ition key

If you lose a key, contact your author ized Audi
dealer immediately to have the
lost key disab led .
Be s ure to bring all your keys with you .

Number of keys
You can chec k the num ber of assigned keys to
your vehicle ¢
page 9. This allows you to make
sure yo u have received all of the keys when you
purchase a used vehicle .
Data in the master key
Dur ing driving, serv ice and maintenance-re levan t
da ta is cont inuous ly stored on your master key.
Your A udi service adviser can read out this data
and te ll yo u about the work your vehicle needs.
This applies also to veh icles with convenience
key *.
Personal comfort settings
If two people use one vehicle, it is recommended
that each person always uses "their own" maste r
k ey . W hen the ig nit ion is turned off or when the
vehicle is loc ked, personal conven ience settings
for the following systems are stored and as­
s igned to the remote master key.
- Climate control
- Power locking sy stem
- Sea t memory *
- Park ing system*
-Adapt ive cr uise control*
- Side assist*
- Drive se lect*
The stored settings are a utomat ica lly rec alled
when you unlock t he vehicle, when yo u ope n the
doo rs or when yo u turn on the ignition.
A WARNING
- Do not leave you r vehicle unattended with
the key in the ignition lock. Entry by una u­
thor ized persons could endanger you o r re­
sult i n theft o r damage the vehicle .
- Do not leave childre n unattended in the ve­
hicle, especially with access to vehicle keys .
Ungua rded access to the keys provides chil­
dren t he opport unity to start the engine
a nd /or ac tiva te ve hicl e sys tems s uch as the
power wi ndows etc. Unsu perv ised ope ration
of any vehicle system by children c an res ult
in ser ious injury.

-Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop . Otherwise the steer ing column
lock could suddenly engage -causing the
risk of an accident .
(D Tips
-The operation of the remote control key can
be temporarily d isrupted by interference
from transmitters in the vicinity of the vehi­
cle work ing in the same frequency range
(e .g. a cell phone, radio equipment).
- For security reasons, replacement keys are
only available from authorized Aud i dea ler .

button is pressed, and during an "inquiry" by
the convenience key system.
.,. If the check light does not come on, the battery
is dead and has to be replaced . In addition,
when the battery is dead the

tery holder out of the master key in the d irec ­

sign facing down .

ter key .
