A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them im­
properly increases the risk of serious personal
injury and death . Safety belts can work only
when used correct ly.
-Always fasten your safety belts correctly be­ fore driving off and make sure all passen­
gers are cor rect ly restrained.
- For maximum protection, safety belts must
always be posit ioned properly on the body .
- Never strap more than one person, includ­ ing small ch ildren, into any belt .
- Never place a safety belt over a child sitt ing
on your lap.
- Always keep feet in the footwell in front of
the seat wh ile the vehicle is being driven.
- Never let any person ride w ith their feet on
the instrument panel or sticking out the
window or on the seat .
- Never remove a safety belt while the vehicle
is moving . Do ing so will increase your risk of
being injured or k illed.
- Never wear belts twisted.
- Never wear belts over rigid or breakable ob-
jects in or on your clothing, such as eye
glasses, pens, keys, etc., as these may cause
injury.
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat hard­
ware.
- Do not wear the shoulder part of the belt
under your arm or otherwise out of position .
- Several layers of heavy clothing may inter­
fere with correct positioning of belts and re­
duce the overall effectiveness of the system.
- Always keep belt buckles free of anything
that may prevent the buckle from latching
securely .
- Never use comfort clips or devices that cre­ ate slack in the shoulder be lt . However, spe­
cial clips may be requ ired for the proper use
of some child restraint systems.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear, and
damaged belt ha rdware can break in an acc i­
dent. Inspect belts regularly.

- Safety belts that have been worn and loaded
in an accident must be replaced with the
correct replacement safety belt by an au­

to repair the safety belts yourse lf.

The driver and front passenger seats are equip­
ped with belt positioners.

ers so it is easier to fasten the safety belts . The
belt positioners automatically extend when the
door closes and the ignit ion sw itches on

Airbag syste m
How supplemental side airbags work
Side airbags deploy instantly and can help re­
duce the risk of upper torso injuries for occu­
pants who are properly restrained .

When the system is triggered, the airbag is filled
with propellant gas and breaks through a seam in
the seat surface area marked "AIRBAG". It ex ­
pands between the side trim panel and the pas­
senger . In order to help provide this additional
protection, the side airbag must inflate within a
fract ion of a second at very high speed and with
great fo rce. The supplemental side airbag could
inj ure yo u if your seating position is not proper or
upright or if items a re loca ted in the area where
the s upplemental side airbag expands. This ap­
plies especially to children¢

Airbags are only supplemental restraints . Always
properly wear safety bel ts and ride in a proper
seating position .
There is a lot that you and your passengers must
k now and act according ly to help the safety belts
and airbags do their job to prov ide supplemental
protect ion .

- In order to reduce the risk of injury when
the supplemental side airbag inflates:

- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags de­ ploy.

It is in precisely these situations that yo u will no ­
tice energy management active ly regulating the
d istr ibut ion of energy.
Vehicle stands for an e xtended period
If you do not drive you r ve hicle over a period of
seve ral days or weeks, elec trical components are
g radually cut back or switched off . This reduces
energy cons umption and ma intains starting ca­
pability over a longer period. Some of the con­
ven ience funct ions may not operate, such as the
interior lights or the power seat adjustment. T he
conven ience functions will be available again
when yo u switch on t he ign it io n and start the en­
g ine .
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the
engine turned off o r use other MMI fu nctions,
the battery is being discharged .
If start ing capability is jeopardized due to energy
consumption, a message appears in the M MI dis­
p lay. The message indicates that the system will
be sw itched off automatically in a moment. If
you wish to cont inue using t he functions, you
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when the
veh icle is being driven, t he battery can become
d ischa rged. This happens most ly when l ittle en ­
ergy is be ing generated and a g reat deal con­
sumed and t he battery's state of cha rge is not
opti mal.
To br ing the energy ba lance back into equ ilibri­
um, consume rs which req uire especially la rge
amo unts of energy a re tempora rily cut bac k or
sw itche d off. Hea ting systems i n par tic ul ar r e­
qu ire a gre at deal of energy. If you not ice, for ex ­
ample , that the heated seats* or the heated rear
window are not heating, they have been tempo ­
rari ly cu t back or switched off . These systems will
be ava ilab le aga in as soon as the energy balance
has been restored .
You will a lso notice that engine idle speed has
been inc reased slightly. This is normal and not a
cause for conce rn. By increasing eng ine idle

speed the a ddi tional energy required is genera t­
ed and the battery is charged.

General information
Regular, prope r care helps to maintain your vehi ­
cle's value.
It can a lso be a requirement when
submitting war ranty claims for cor rosion damage
and pa int defects on the body.
The necessary care prod ucts can be obtained
from an autho rized Audi deale r or authorized
Aud i Service Facility. Read and follow the instruc­
tions for use on the packaging.
A WARNING
- Using clean ing and care products incorrectly

- Always store clean ing and care products out
of reach of children to reduce the r isk of po i­
so ning.

- Do not dispose of leftove r clean ing and care

Car washes
The longer that deposits remain on the veh icle,
the more the surface may be damaged. High
temperatures such as those caused by sunlight
increase the damaging effect.
Before washing, rinse
off heavy depos its with
p lenty of water.
Stubborn deposits s uch as bird d roppings or tree
sap are best removed with plenty of water and a mic rofibe r cloth.
A lso, wash the und erside of yo ur vehicle o nce
road sa lt stops being used for the season .
Pressure washers
When washing your veh icle w ith a pressure wash­
er, always follow the operating instructions pro ­
vided wi th the press ure washer. This is espe cially
impor tant i n rega rd to the pressure and spraying
d istance. Do not direct the stream of water di­
rectly onto seals for the side windows, doors,

lu ggage compartment lid or hood or onto the
tires, rubber hoses, insulating material, the pow­
er top, sensors* or camera lenses* . Keep a dis­
tance of at least 16 inches (40 cm).
Do not remove snow and ice with a pressure
washer.
Neve r use cone nozzles or high press ure nozzles.
The wate r temperatu re must not be above 140 °F
(60 °() .
Automatic car washes
Spray off the vehicle before washing.
Make sure that the win dows and power top are
closed and the windsh ield wipers are off. Follow
i nst ruct ions from the car wash operator, espe­
c ia lly if there are accessories attached to yo ur ve­
hicle.
If possible, use car washes that do not have
brushes.
Washing by hand
Clean th e ve hicle star ting from the top and work­
i ng down using a soft sponge or clea ning brus h.
Use solvent -free cleaning products.
Washing vehicles with matte finish paint by
hand
To avo id damaging the paint when washing, fi rst
remove dust and large pa rticles from your vehi­
cle. Insects, grease spots and f ingerprints are
best removed w ith a special cleaner for matte
finish paint.
Apply t he product using a microf iber cloth. To
avo id damaging the paint surface, do not use too
much pressure.
Rinse the ve hicle thoroughly with wate r. Then
clean using a neutra l shampoo and a soft micro ­
fiber clot h.
Rinse the vehicl e thorough ly again and le t i t air
d ry. Remove any water residue using a chamois.

zene, paint thinner or other solvents to
remove.

- Remove snow and ice on windows and ex-
terior mirrors with a p lastic scraper . To
avoid sc ratches, move the scrape r only in
one direction and not back and forth.
- Never remove snow or ice from door win­
dows and m irrors using warm or hot water
because this could cause cracks to form.

brake fluid as we ll as the special toots re­
quired and the necessary expertise, we rec­
ommend that you have the brake fluid
changed by your authorized Audi dealer .
Battery
General information
Under normal operating conditions, the battery
in your Audi does not need any maintenance.
With
high outside temperatures or long daily
drives we recommend that you have the electro­
lyte level checked by an authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop. The electrolyte level should
also be checked each time the battery is charged
¢ page 205.
Have the battery checked when you take your ve­
hicle in for serv ice. You are well advised to re­
place a battery t hat is older than 5 years.
Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle functions (power window regula­
tors, for example) are lost if the battery termi­ nals are disconnected. These functions have to be
relearned after the battery terminals are con­
nected again. To prevent th is, the battery should
only be disco nnected from the vehicle e lectr ica l
system when abso lutely necessary for repairs.
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of
several days or weeks, electrical components are
gradually cut back or sw itched off. This reduces
energy consumption and maintains starting ca ­
pability over a longer period¢
page 173.
Some of the conven ience functions may not oper­
ate, such as the interior lights or the power seat
adjustment. The convenience functions will be
available again when you turn on the ignition and
start the engine.
Winter operation
During the winter months, battery capacity tends
to decrease as temperatures drop . T his is be-

ing, and the headlights, rear window defogger,
etc., are used more often.
Avo id unnecessary power consumption, particu­
larly in city traff ic or when traveling only short
distances . Let your authorized Audi dealer check
the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter

page 205. A well charged battery will
not only prevent starting problems when the
weather is cold, but will also last longer .
(D Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for several
weeks at extremely low temperatures, the ve­
hicle battery should be removed and stored
where it w ill not freeze. This will prevent it
from be ing damaged and having to be re­
placed.
Working on the battery
Be especially careful when working on or near
the battery.
The battery is located in the luggage compart­
ment under the floo r. Before you check anything
in the luggage compartment,
read and heed all
