The odometer @ shows the total number of kilo ­
meters or miles that have been driven on the ve­

The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset.
It can be used to measure
short distances. The last digit shows distances of
100 meters or 1/10 of a mile .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by press ­

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhe re in the in­
strume nt cluster,

ABS /(@) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light fIE) (USA models)/
ti] (Canada models) will come on for a few sec­
onds when the ign it ion is switched on. The light
will go out after an automatic check sequence is
comp leted.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illuminate
when you switch the ign it ion on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates while driving .
The ESC indicator light a lso illuminates if there is
a ma lfunction in the ABS. The message
Stabiliza­
tion control (ESC): Fault! See owner's manual
also appears in the instrument cluster display
and a warning tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re ­
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system

The ED L works together with the ABS . The ABS
warn ing light will come on if there is a ma lfunc­
tion in the EDL system

Instruments and indicator lights
A WARNING
- If the fIE) (USA models)/ tl] (Canada mod­
els) warning light does not go out, or if it
comes on while dr iv ing, the ABS system is
not working proper ly . The vehicle can then
be stopped only with the standard brakes
(without ABS). You will not have the protec­
tion ABS provides. Contact your authorized
Audi dealer as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light and
the
9 warning light come on together, the
rear wheels could lock up first under hard
braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss
of vehicle control and an acc ident. Have your
veh icle repaired immediately by your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop .
Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake
applications .
-Canada models: If the brake warn ing light
• and the ABS warning light
tlJ come on
together, the rear whee ls could lock up first
under hard b raking. Rear whee l lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acci­
dent . Have your vehicle repaired immediate­
ly by your authorized Audi dea ler or quali­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sud­

t!i I !i: Safety systems
The fl (USA models)/ EI (Canada mode ls) indi­
cator light monitors the safety systems (e.g. a ir­
bags, pretensioners) and illum inates for a few
seconds each time you switch the ignition on.
If the
II (USA models) tEI (Canada models) in­
dicator light does not go out, or if it illuminates
wh ile you are driving, or if it starts to blink, then
there is a malfunct ion somewhere in the system .
If the light does not illuminate when you switch
the ignition on, this also means there is a mal­
function.
A WARNING ~
If yo u have a ma lf u nction in the safety sys-
tems, contact your authorized Aud i dealer im­
mediately. Otherwise the safety systems may
not work properly in an accident.

Driver information system
On-board computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on cur­
rent and average fuel mileage, average speed,
fu el range and driving time.

The fo llow ing information is contin uously evalu­
ated by the trip computer and can be displayed
sequent ia lly in the instrument cluster display:
Fuel range
The estima ted cruising range i n miles (km) ap­
pea rs in the disp lay . Th is tells you how far your
veh icle w ill be able to travel on the c urrent tank
of fuel and with the same driv ing style. The dis ­
p lay changes in increments of 5 miles (10 km).
T he cruising range is calcu lated based on the fuel
consumption for the last 18 m iles (30 km). If you
drive conse rvatively, the cru is ing range will in­
crease.
Average fuel mileage
T he avera ge f uel economy in M PG (l/ 100 k m)
since you last clea red the memory a ppears in this
d isp lay . You can use this display to adj ust your
driving technique to achieve a desired mileage .
Current fuel mileage
The instant aneous f ue l cons umption in miles per
ga llon (l/100 km) is shown in this display. Yo u
can use t his disp lay to adjust yo ur driving techni ­
que to ach ieve a desired mileage .
F ue l cons umption is recalcu lated at inte rv a ls of
33 y ards ( 30 meters) . T his d isp lay sw itches to
ga llons/ho ur ( liters/hour) when the vehicle is not
mov ing.

Average speed
The average s peed in mp h (km /h) s in ce you last
rese t the memory appears in t he d isplay .
Elapsed time
The length of time that yo u have been drivi ng
s ince you la st reset t he memory appears in this
display.
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the last
time the memory was cleared appears in the dis­ play.

- Fuel consumptio ns (ave rage and current),
range and speed are disp layed in metric
units on Canad ian mode ls.
- All stored values will be lost if the vehicle
bat tery is discon nect ed.
Memories
The trip computer is equipped with two fully au ­
tomatic memories as well as an efficiency pro­
gram*.

Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due .
The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed ac ­
cord ingly . The display works in two stages :
Service rem inder
30 days before the next service is due, a service
reminder appears in the d isp lay when you turn on
the ignition.
After about 5 seconds the display switches back
to normal. The distance and time remain ing are
updated each time the ignition is turned on until
the date due for service is reached.
Se rvi ce due
When the due date for service is reached, the
m essage
Ser vice due! appears in the instrument
cluster immediately after you turn on the igni ­
tion . Additionally, a warning tone sounds. After
about 5 seconds the d isplay sw itches back to nor ­
mal.

Resetting the service int erval display
Yo ur autho rized Aud i dea le r will reset the co rre­
sponding serv ice schedu le after performing the
appropriate service on your vehicle . You also have
the possibility to reset the oi l change schedule
after having performed an oil change accord ing

- If you disconnect the battery term inals, no
calcu lations can be made for the se rvice in­

observ ing the proper serv ice i ntervals is vi­
t ally impo rtan t to ex tending the life o f your
vehicle, particular ly the engine, and ma in­
taining its va lue . Even if the mileage driven
is low, the maximum period o f one yea r
from one service to the next must not be ex­
ceeded.

The information in the Serv ice Reminder re­
mains stored even when the vehicle battery is
disconnected.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢4 in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic (OBD II) system .
The warning/indicator light ill uminates when the
ignition is sw itched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stab ilized . This indi-
cates that the MIL is working properly . ..,.

-Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop . Otherwise the steer ing column
lock could suddenly engage -causing the
risk of an accident .

-The operation of the remote control key can

Daytime running lights
USA models :
You can switch the daytime r unning
lights
on and off .
Canada models: The funct ion cannot be tu rned
off .
It is activated automatically each t ime the ig­
n ition is switched on.
Tra vel mode*
The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
vides stronger illumination on the side of the
road on which you are driving.
If you are driving
in a cou ntry that dr ives on the opposite side of
the road from you r own country, this will cause
g lar e fo r oncom ing dr ive rs . To p revent glare:
- Travel mode must be selected in veh icles w ith
Xenon headlights* .
- In vehicles with halogen headlights, certain
areas of the headlight lenses must be cove red
with waterproof adhesive covers that prev ent
l ight from passing through. For more informa­
tion, ple ase see you r auth orized Audi dea le r or
a uthorized repair fa ci lity .

You should turn on the emergency flashers

-your vehicle is be ing towed by a tow tru ck or
if yo u are towing another vehicle behin d
you.

Driving
had made a fu ll brake application. The laws of
physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its associated components ( ABS, ASR,
EDS) . In corners and when road or weather
conditions are bad, a ful l brake application
can cause the vehicle to sk id or the rea r end to
break away- r isk ing an accide nt.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns if the driver ex ­
ceeds a prev ious ly stored max imum speed. A
warn ing tone wi ll sound as soon as the vehicle
speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph
(3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning symbo l
appears in the display. The symbol 's appearance
might be d ifferent in some models.
The speed warning system has two warn ing
thresho lds that funct ion independent ly of each
other and that have somew hat different purpos­
es:
Speed warn ing 1
You can use speed warn ing 1 to set the maximum
speed wh ile you are dr iving . This setting wi ll re ­
main in effect unti l yo u turn
off the ignition, as­
sum ing that you have not changed or reset the
sett ing .
The . (USA models)/ . (Canada mode ls)
speed warning symbol in the wa rning
1 display
appears when you exceed the maximum speed . It
goes out when the speed falls below the stored
maximum speed .
The speed warning symbo l will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored maximum speed by
more than about 25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seconds . The stored maximum speed is de let­
ed.
Speed warn ing 2
Stor ing warning 2 is recommended if yo u always
want to be reminded of a certain speed, for ex­
ample when you are traveling in a country that

has a general maximum speed limit, or if you do
not want to exceed a specified speed for winter
tires.

Automatic transmission multitronic, S tronic,
tiptronic
Introduction
Applies to: vehicle s with multitronic/S tronic/tiptronic
The automatic transmission is cont rolled e lec­
tronica lly. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive program is selected.
When a
moderate drivi ng style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical driving
mode. It will then change up early and delay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy.
The transm ission switches to a sporty mode afte r
a kick -down or when the driver uses a
s po rt y
d riv ing sty le
characterized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acce leration, frequent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually { tip tron ic mode) 9 page 81.
Various automatic transmissions may be instal­
led, depending on the model :
multitronic transmission
The multitronic transmission is a cont inuous ly
va riable t ransmiss ion. Power is transferred using
a mu ltidisk clutch. In contrast to conventiona l
automatic transmissions using shifting opera­
tions, the transmission ratio in the continuous ly
variable transmiss ion is changed continuously.
This optimizes the comfort level and conserves
fuel.
S tr onic transmi ssion
The S tronic is a dua l-clutch transmiss ion . Power
is transferred using two clutches that work inde­
pendently from one another. They replace the
torque converter used in conventional automatic
transmissions and allow the vehicle to accelerate
without a noticeable interruption in tract ion.
