Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
b link or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions ¢& .
Messages may appear with some indicator lights.
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The messages disappear again after a short t ime.
To disp lay a message again, press the
ISETI but­
ton ¢
page 9. If several malfunctions occur, each
of the indicator/warning lamps will be displayed
in succession for about two seconds at a time.
Some ind icators lights in the display can turn on
in several colors.
A WARNING
-
-Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle informat ion may result in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on th@
emergency flasher¢ page 50.
-The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area . Before
you check anything in the engine compart­ ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.
Always exercise extreme caution when work­ ing under the hood¢
page 193.
Overview
Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check the
function of that system when you switch the ign i­
tion on . These systems are marked with a ,/ in
the following tables. If one of these indicator
lights does not turn on, there is a malfunction in
that system.

Instruments and indicator lights
-Always keep in min d that afte r severa l brake
applications, you will need greate r pressure
on the brake pedal t o stop you r vehicle. Do
not re ly on strained brakes to respond w ith
ma ximum stopping power in c rit ical situa ­
t ions. You must allow for increas ed braki ng
di stan ces. The e xtra dist ance used up by
fa din g brak es c oul d lead to a n accid ent.

The warning/indicator light monitors th e elec­
trome chanical parking brak e.
If the ind icator lig ht . (USA models) . (Cana­
da models) t urns on , the park ing brake was set .
The warning/indicator light will go o ut when the
pa rking brake is re leased.
• (USA models ) /. (Canada models) Cau­
tion: Vehicle parked too steep
If th e ind ic ator lig ht blinks and t he message ap ­
pea rs, there is not eno ugh bra king power to keep
the vehicle from ro llin g. The bra kes have over ­
heate d. The vehicle could ro ll away even on a
sma ll incline .
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
To re lease the pa rk ing bra ke, press the bra ke
pe dal and pr ess t he bu tton<®) or start driv ing
w ith s tarti ng assis t at the s ame t ime
¢ page 77.
Please release parking brake
To re lease the park ing brake ma nually, press the
b rake pedal and press the button<®> at the same
time . The parking brake o nly re leases automati­
cally if the dr iver's safety be lt is fastened.

sage appears, there is a pa rking brake mal func­

• Alternator fault : Battery is not being charg­
ed
If the indicato r light turns on and the message
appears, the re is a ma lfu nction in t he generator
o r vehicle e lectr ica l system .
D rive to your authorized A udi dealer or qualified
workshop immediately . Because the vehicle bat­
tery is d ischa rging , tur n off all unnecessa ry elec ­
trical eq uipme nt such as the rad io . Seek p ro fes­
s io na l assis tance if the battery charge leve l is too
l ow.
(•) Low battery: Battery will be charged while
driving
If the indicato r light turns on and the message
appears, there may be limited sta rting ability.
If this message t urns off after a little w hil e, t he
ba tte ry c harge d enough while dr iv ing .

Power top
Power top emergency
operation
General information
The power top con be closed manually if there is
a malfunction .
• Set the parking brake.
• Open the windows.
• Switch the ignition off .
• To reduce pressure in the power top hydraulics,
pull the~ button for approximate ly 10 to 15
seconds ¢
page 40, fig. 34 .
Only close the power top manually in an emer­
gency. Have a second person he lp you. Drive to an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized repair facili­
ty immediately to have the malfunction correct­
ed.
A WARNING
- There is a risk of pinching your hands or in­
juring other people during all steps in the power top emergency operation process.
- Ma ke sure a ll windows a re open dur ing
emergency operation.
- Do not hold the power top supports or
other moving parts.
- Never dr ive when the power top is not
locked correctly . The wind from driving
could cause the power top to open . This can
result in injuries and damage to the vehicle .
(1) Tips
The vehicle headliner is not clipped in and the
power top compartment cover is not locked
after using the power top emergency opera ­
tion procedure. Drive to an authorized Audi
dea ler or authorized repair facility immediate­
ly to have the malfunction corrected.

The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your ve hicle is equipped wi th an elec tromechani ­
cal parking b rake. The park ing brake is designed
to prevent the vehicle from rolling un intent ional­
ly and rep laces the hand brake .
I n addition to t he norma l func tions of a tradi ­
tional hand brake, the electromecha nica l park ing
b rake provides various convenience and safety
functions.
When starting from rest
- T he integ ral s tart ing assist helps you when
driv ing by a utomat ically releasing the park ing

-When starting on in cli nes, the sta rting assist
prevents the vehicle from unintentiona lly roll ­
ing back . The braking forc e of the park ing b rake
is not released until sufficient drivi ng force has
been built up at the wheels.

A WARNING
-
If a drive range is e ngaged w ith the vehicle
stationary and the engine running, you must
i n no instance accelerate careless ly. Other­
wise the veh icle w ill start to move immediate­
ly -risk of an accident.

- If the park ing brake is applied with the igni­
t ion switched off, the indicator lights in the
switch and -(USA mode ls)/ . (Cana­
da models) in the instrument cluster w ill go
o ut after a certai n pe riod of time.
- Occasional noises when the pa rking brake is
applie d and released are normal and are not
a ca use for conc ern.
- Whe n the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at regu­
lar intervals. Any associated noise s are nor­
m al.
Parking
~ Press the bra ke peda l to stop the ve hicle.
~ Pull the switch@¢ page 76, fig. 91 to set the
parking bra ke .
~ Move the se lector lever to P.
~ T urn the engine off¢.&,. .
~ When on inclines or decl ines, turn the steer ing
wheel so that the vehicle will ro ll into the curb
if it begins to move .
.&_ WARNING
-W hen you leave yo ur vehicle -even if only
b riefly- always re move t he igni tion key. This
app lies p art ic ula rly when children remain in
the vehicle. Ot herwise the children could
start the e ngine, re lease the parking brake
or operate electrica l equipment (e .g. power
w indows) . The re is the r isk of an accident.

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - part icu­
larly not children should remain in the vehi­
cle. Locked doors make it more diff icu lt for
emergency workers to get into the vehicle -
putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking brake
~ Pull the switch @9 page 76, fig. 91 to apply
the parking brake.
Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
~ When you start to drive as usual, the parking
brake is automatica lly released and your vehicle
begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in
city traffic on vehicles w ith an automatic trans­
miss ion, the park ing brake can be applied. The
vehicle does not have to be held with the foot­ brake . The park ing brake eliminates the tendency
to creep with a drive range engaged. As soo n as
you dr ive off as usual, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically and the veh icle starts to
move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the start ing assist pre ­
vents the vehicle from unintentionally rolling
back. The braking force of the parking brake is
not released until sufficient driving force has
been built up at the wheels.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Driving
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an in­
cline, do the following:
~ Keep the switch @9 page 76, fig. 91 pulled
and depress the accelerator. The parking brake
stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
rolling backwa rd .
~ You ca n release the sw itch @once you a re sure
that you are develop ing enough dr iv in g force at
t he wheels by depressing the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and
trailer) and the severity of the incline, you may
roll backwards as you start. You can prevent roll­
i ng backwards by holding the pa rking brake
swi tch @ pulled out and accelerating -just as
you wou ld when starting on a hill with a conven­
t iona l hand brake .
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional broke system
foils or locks.
~ I n an emergency, pull the switch@Q page 76,
fig. 91 and continue to pull it to slow your vehi ­
cle down with the parking brake.
~ As soon as you re lease the switch @or acceler-
ate, the braking process stops .
If you pull the switch @and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
braking f unction is init iated. The vehicle is braked
at all four whee ls by activating the hydraulic
brake system . The brake performance is s imilar
to making an emergency stop

In order not to activate the emergency braking by
mistake, an audible warning tone (buzzer)
sounds when the switch @is pulled . As soon as
the switch @ is released, or the accelerator pedal
i s depressed, emergency braking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an
emergency, when the normal foot bra ke has
failed or the brake pedal is obstructed. Using
the parking brake to perform emergency
braking w ill slow your vehicle down as if you

At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the Auto­
matic Shift Lock is automatically deactivated in
the N position.
A time delay element prevents the selector lever
from locking when it is moved through the N po­
sition (going from R to D/S). The locking e lement
will lock the se lector lever if the lever is left in N
(Neutral) for more than approx imately 2 sec­
onds, without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
The release button on the se lector lever prevents
the lever from being accidentally sh ifted into cer­
tain positions. Depending on the d irection of the
shift, the selector lever locks at d ifferent posi­
tions . The positions are highlighted in the illus­
tration ¢
fig. 96 .
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition un­
less the selector lever is in the P park posit ion.
When the ignit ion key is removed, the selector
lever will be locked in the P pos ition .

Automatic transm ission
~ Wait briefly unti l the transmission has shi fted
(you will feel a slight movement).
~ Remove your foot from the brake pedal and ac­
celerate.
Stopping temporarily
~ Keep the vehicle stationary using the braking
pedal, for examp le at traffic lights.
~ Do not press the acce lerator pedal when doing
this .
~ To prevent the veh icle from rolling when you
start driv ing, set the parking brake when stop­
p in g on steep incl ines ¢.&_ .
~ The parking brake will release automat ically
and the vehicle will start moving once you press
the acce le rator pedal.
Stopping/parking
If the selector lever is not in the P position when
you open the driver's door, the vehicle could roll.

Transmission: Car may roll! Shift
to park!

has come to a complete stop .

cle in place and prevent it from "rolling back"

Starting on an incline
~ Activate the parking brake.
~ With the driving gear selected, press the accel ­
erator pedal carefully . The park ing brake will
release automatically if your seat belt is fas­
t ened.
Under certain circumstances, such as driving in
the mountains , it may be useful to switch tempo­
rarily to the manual shift program in order to ad­
just the gears to the driv in g conditions by hand
¢page 85.
On slopes, act ivate the park ing brake first and
then move the selecto r lever to the P position.
