SQUEAK AND RATTLE TROUBLE DIAGNOSES
1. Cluster lid A and the instrument panel
2. Acrylic lens and combination meter housing
3. Instrument panel to front pillar finisher
4. Instrument panel to windshield
5. Instrument panel pins
6. Wiring harnesses behind the combination meter
7. A/C defroster duct and duct joint
These incidents can usually be located by tapping or
moving the components to duplicate the noise or by
pressing on the components while driving to stop the noise. Most of these incidents can be repaired by apply-
ing felt cloth tape or silicone spray (in hard to reach areas). Urethane pads can be used to insulate wiring har-
ness.
CAUTION:
Do not use silicone spray to isolate a squeak or rattle. If you saturate the ar ea with silicone, you will
not be able to recheck the repair.
CENTER CONSOLE
Components to pay attention to include:
1. Shift selector assembly cover to finisher
2. A/C control unit and cluster lid C
3. Wiring harnesses behind audio and A/C control unit
The instrument panel repair and isolation pr ocedures also apply to the center console.
DOORS
Pay attention to the:
1. Finisher and inner panel making a slapping noise
2. Inside handle escutcheon to door finisher
3. Wiring harnesses tapping
4. Door striker out of alignment causing a popping noise on starts and stops
Tapping or moving the components or pressing on them wh ile driving to duplicate the conditions can isolate
many of these incidents. You can usually insulate the areas with felt cloth tape or insulator foam blocks from
the NISSAN Squeak and Rattle Kit (J-50397) to repair the noise.
TRUNK
Trunk noises are often caused by a loose jack or loose items put into the trunk by the owner.
In addition look for:
1. Trunk lid bumpers out of adjustment
2. Trunk lid striker out of adjustment
3. The trunk lid torsion bars knocking together
4. A loose license plate or bracket
Most of these incidents can be repaired by adjusting, se curing or insulating the item(s) or component(s) caus-
ing the noise.
SUNROOF/HEADLINING
Noises in the sunroof/headlining area c an often be traced to one of the following:
1. Sunroof lid, rail, linkage or seals making a rattle or light knocking noise
2. Sun visor shaft shaking in the holder
3. Front or rear windshield touching headlining and squeaking
Again, pressing on the components to stop the noise while duplicating the conditions can isolate most of these
incidents. Repairs usually consist of insulating with felt cloth tape.
OVERHEAD CONSOLE (FRONT AND REAR)
Overhead console noises are often caused by the c onsole panel clips not being engaged correctly. Most of
these incidents are repaired by pushing up on the c onsole at the clip locations until the clips engage.
In addition look for:
1. Loose harness or harness connectors.
2. Front console map/reading lamp lens loose.

procedure.
Unit: mm (in)
1. Loosen back door hinge nuts (door side).
2. Lift up back door approximately 100 – 150 mm (3.94 – 5.91 in) height then close it lightly and check that it
is engaged firmly with back door closed.
3. Check the clearance and surface height and adjust back door as necessary.
4. Tighten back door hinge nuts to specified torque.
CAUTION:
• After installation, check back door open/close, lock/ unlock operation.
• Check back door hinge rotating po int for poor lubrication. If necessary, apply a suitable multi-pur-
pose grease.
• After adjusting, apply touch-up paint (body color) to the head of rear door hinge bolts and nuts.

PRECAUTIONS
• Dowel pins are used for several parts alignment. When replacing and reassembling parts with dowel pins,
check that dowel pins are installed in the original position.
• Cover openings of engine system with a tape or equival ent, if necessary, to seal out foreign materials.
• Mark and arrange disassembly parts in an organi zed way for easy troubleshooting and reassembly.
• When loosening nuts and bolts, start with the one furthest outside, then the one diagonally opposite, and so on. If the order of loosening is specified, do exactl y as specified. Power tools may be used in the step.
Inspection, Repair and ReplacementINFOID:0000000012431684
Before repairing or replacing, thoroughly inspect parts. Inspect new replacement parts in the same way, and
replace if necessary.
Assembly and InstallationINFOID:0000000012431685
• Use torque wrench to tighten bolts or nuts to specification.
• Tighten nuts and bolts in order exactly as specified in the procedure. If a tightening order or procedure is not
specified, tighten nuts and bolts equally in several differ ent steps. Start with the nuts or bolts in the center
and then tighten diagonally starting with the inside and moving to the outside in a spiral pattern.
• Replace with new gasket, packing, oil seal or O-ring.
• Thoroughly wash, clean, and air-blow each part. Carefully check engine oil or engine coolant passages for restrictions and blockages.
• Avoid damaging sliding or mating surfaces. Before assembling, completely remove foreign materials such as cloth lint or dust, and oil the sliding surfaces.
• After refilling engine coolant, bleed the air from the cooling system.
• After repairing, start the engine and increase engine s peed to check for engine coolant leaks, fuel leaks,
engine oil leaks, and exhaust gas leaks.
Parts Requiring Angle TighteningINFOID:0000000012431686
• For the final tightening of the following engine parts use Tool:
- Camshaft sprocket (INT) bolt
- Cylinder head bolts
- Main bearing cap bolts
- Connecting rod cap bolts
- Crankshaft pulley bolt (Note an angle wrench is required as bolt flange is provided with notches for angle tightening)
• Do not use a torque value for final tightening.
• The torque value for these parts are for a preliminary step.
• Ensure thread and seat surfaces are clean and coated with engine oil.
Precaution for Liquid GasketINFOID:0000000012431687
REMOVAL OF LIQUID GASKET SEALING
• After removing the bolts and nuts, separate the mating surface and remove the liquid gasket using Tool (A).
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces.
• In areas where the cutter is difficult to use, use a plastic hammer to lightly tap (1) the cutter where the liquid gasket is applied. Use a
plastic hammer to slide (2) the cutter by tapping on the side.
CAUTION:
Do not damage the mating surfaces. Tool number : KV10112100 (BT-8653-A)

timing chain by rotating the crankshaft pulley clockwise slightly.
13. Pull out the stopper pin of chain tensioner.
14. Install front cover.
15. Return the camshaft sprocket (INT) in the most retarded position:
a. Remove the stopper pin (A) from the camshaft sprocket (INT).
b. Turn the crankshaft pulley (1) slowly clockwise (A) and return the camshaft sprocket (INT) to the most retarded angle position.
• When first turning the crankshaft, the camshaft sprocket (INT)
will turn. Once it is turned more, and the vane (camshaft) also
turns, then it has reached t he most retarded angle position.
• The most retarded angle position can be checked by seeing if the stopper pin groove (A) is shifted clockwise.
• After spinning the crankshaft slightly in the counterclockwise direction, you can check the lock pin has joined by seeing if
the vane (camshaft) and the sprocket move together.
16. Install the camshaft position sensor (PHASE) to the rear end of cylinder head. • Tighten bolts with it completely inserted.
17. Check and adjust valve clearance. Refer to EM-10, "
Inspection and Adjustment".

or more malfunctions.
The SP value is used to detect malfunctions that may af fect the Engine Control System, but will not light the

The SP value will be displayed for the following three items:
• B/FUEL SCHDL (The fuel injection pulse width programmed into ECM prior to any learned on board correc- tion)
