To apply the parking brake
1- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal,then pull the lever up without pushing
the button at the end of hand grip.
CAUTIONl When you intend to apply the parking brake,
firmly press the brake pedal to bring the ve-hicle to a complete stop before pulling theparking brake lever. Pulling the parking brake lever with the vehicle moving could
make the rear wheels lock up, thereby mak- ing the vehicle unstable. It could also make
the parking brake malfunction.NOTEl Apply sufficient force to the parking brake
lever to hold the vehicle stationary after the foot brake is released.NOTEl If the parking brake does not hold the vehi-
cle stationary after the foot brake is released,
have your vehicle checked immediately.
To release the parking brake
1- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal,
then pull the lever up slightly.
2- Push the button at the end of hand grip.
3- Lower the lever fully.
CAUTIONl Before driving, be sure that the parking
brake is fully released and brake warning
lamp is off.
If a vehicle is driven without releasing the
parking brake, the brake will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible
brake failure.CAUTIONl If the brake warning lamp does not extin-
guish when the parking brake is fully re- leased, the brake system may be abnormal.
Have your vehicle checked immediately.

Parking on a hill
To prevent the vehicle from rolling, follow these procedures:
Parking on a downhill slope
Turn the front wheels towards the kerb and move the vehicle forward until the kerb side
wheel gently touches the kerb.
Apply the parking brake and place the gear- shift lever into the “R” (Reverse) position
(with M/T) or the selector lever into the “P”
(PARK) position (with A/T).
If necessary, apply chocks to wheels.

WARNINGlYour vehicle is equipped with convex type
mirrors. Please take into consideration,that objects you see in the mirror will looksmaller and farther away compared to a normal flat mirror.
Do not use this mirror to estimate dis- tance of following vehicles when changing

the mirror whose adjustment is desired.

CAUTIONl Do not drive the vehicle with the mirror fol-
ded in. The lack of rearward visibility nor-mally provided the mirror could lead to an
accident.
Retracting and extending the
mirrors using the mirror re- tractor switch
With the ignition switch in the “ON” or
“ACC” position, push the mirror retractor switch to retract the mirrors. Push it again to
extend the mirrors to their original positions.
After placing the ignition switch in the “LOCK” position, it is possible to retract and
extend the mirrors using the mirror retractor switch for about 30 seconds.CAUTIONl It is possible to retract and extend the mir-
rors by hand. After retracting a mirror using
the mirror retractor switch, however, you should extend it by using the switch again,
not by hand. If you extended the mirror by
hand after retracting it using the switch, it would not properly lock in position. As a re-
sult, it could move because of the wind or
vibration while you are driving, taking away your rearward visibility.

•Check the brake system and, if neces-
sary, have it serviced.
• Check the engine, transmission, trans-
fer, and differential oil or grease level and turbidity. If the oil or grease is
milky, it indicates water contamina-
tion. Replace it with new oil or grease.
• Grease the propeller shaft.
• Check the inside of the vehicle. If in-
gress of water is found, dry the carpet
etc.
• Inspect the headlamps. If the head-
lamp bulb is flooded with water, we

Tyres and wheels
Since the driving torque can be applied to the
4 wheels, the performance of the vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly af- fected by the condition of the tyres.
Pay close attention to the tyres.
l Install specified tyres on all wheels. Re-
fer to “Tyres and wheels” on page
11-11.
l Be sure to fit all 4 tyres and wheels of
the same size and type.
When replacement of any of the tyres or
wheels is necessary, replace all of them.
l All tyres should be rotated whenever the
wear difference between the front and
rear tyres is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expec- ted if there is a difference in wear between
tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” on page 10-15.
l Check the tyre inflation pressure regular-
ly.
l If the tyre inflation pressure is inappro-
priate, the transfer gear may make some
noise and shock while changing the drive mode.CAUTIONl Always use tyres of the same size, same
type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tyres which differ in
size, type, brand or the degree of wear will
cause excessive loading, resulting in possi- ble damage to the drive system.Towing
If towing is necessary, we recommend you to
have it done by your MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point or a
commercial tow truck service.
In the following cases, transport the vehicle
using a tow truck.
l The engine runs but the vehicle does not
move or abnormal noise is produced.
l Inspection of the vehicle’s underside re-
veals that oil or some other fluid is leak- ing.
Only when you cannot receive a towing serv- ice from a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point or commercial tow truck
service, tow your vehicle carefully in accord- ance with the instructions given in “Towing”

CAUTIONlBe sure to shift the transfer shift lever to the
“2H” position. Never try to tow with the transfer shift lever in the “4H”, “4HLc” or
“4LLc” positions and with any of the wheels
on the ground (Type A or B). This could re- sult in damage to the vehicle’s driving sys- tem, or the vehicle could become separated from the tow truck and unexpected accident
might result. If you cannot shift the transfer shift lever to “2H” position or the transmis-
sion is malfunctioning or damaged, transport the vehicle with all the wheels on a carriage (Type C or D) as illustrated.If you can shift the transfer shift lever to the “2H” position.If you cannot shift the transfer shift lever to the “2H”

Jacking up a 4-wheel drive ve-
hicle
WARNINGl Do not crank the engine while jacking up

All the parts of the brake system are critical
to safety. We recommend you to have the ve- hicle checked at regular intervals according
to the service booklet.
CAUTIONl Avoid driving habits that cause heavy brak-
ing and never “ride” the brakes by resting
your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
It causes brake overheating and fade.
Brake system
The service brake is divided into two brake
circuits so that when one brake circuit fails, the other is available to stop the vehicle. In
this situation, even if the brake pedal moves down to the very end of its possible stroke,
keep depressing the brake pedal down harder than usual; stop driving as soon as possible
and have the brake system repaired.

CAUTIONlIf the temperature in the braking system in-
creases excessively due to continuous brake
control on a slippery road surface, a warning
buzzer will sound intermittently to warn the driver. If driving continues in spite of the
buzzer and the temperature in the braking
system increases further, the
indication
lamp will illuminate, the warning buzzer will sound continuously for approximately
3 seconds, and active traction control func- tion operation will be suspended to protectthe braking system. (Normal operation of thevehicle will not be affected.) If the vehicle is
stopped and the
indication lamp goes off,
the active traction control function will start
operating again.

The indication lamp (1) should illuminate
when the ignition switch is turned to the
“ON” position and should go off after a few seconds.
If the indication lamp stays on or does not il-
luminate when the ignition switch is turned to
the “ON” position, we recommend you to
have your vehicle inspected.
When the active Traction Control System op-
erates, the active traction control function in-dication lamp (1) blinks and the indication
lamp for the wheel (2) being subjected to an- tispin control also blinks.

Obstacle detection areas

The detection areas of the corner and back
sensors are limited to those shown in the il- lustration. Because the back sensors are built
in the overhanging area of the vehicle (spare
wheel garnish), the sensors are unable to de- tect low or thin obstacles, or obstacles on the
bottom of the spare wheel garnish or the bot- tom of the centre of the rear bumper. Thus,
make sure to check the surroundings as you
operate the vehicle in a safe manner.
Reversing sensor system detec- tion areas
Depending on whether the vehicle is equip-
ped with a towing bar, you can change the re-
versing sensor system between the standard
mode and the towing bar mode. The towing bar mode changes the system to exclude thearea in which the towing bar is mounted from
the detection areas.
Vehicles without a towing bar
The detection areas are within approximately
50 cm (A) from the corner sensors, 150 cm
(B) from the back sensors.
Vehicles with a towing bar
The detection areas are within approximately 50 cm (A) from the corner sensors, 150 cm
(B) from the back sensors. The non-detection areas (C) are within approximately 20 cm (D)
from the bumper.
NOTEl If the rear bumper or the spare wheel garnish
has been exposed to an impact, the corner orback sensors may fail and prevent the sys-
tem from functioning properly. We recom- mend you to have your vehicle inspected.
l The sensors do not detect objects located in
the area directly below or near the bumper. If the height of an object is lower than themounted position of the corner or back sen-
sors, the sensors may not continue detecting
it even if they detected it initially.
For information on how to change the detec-
tion areas, please refer to “Changing the de- tection areas” on page 6-60.
CAUTIONl The reversing sensor system may not operate
properly under the following conditions:
• The sensors or surroundings are covered
with ice, snow, or mud.
• The sensors are frozen.
• The system receives ultrasonic noise from
other sources (the horns of other vehicles, motorcycle engines, brakes, radios, pour-
ing rain, splashing water, tyre chains, etc.).
• The sensors are extremely hot or cold
(while the vehicle is parked for a long pe- riod of time under a blazing sun or in coldweather).

NOTElAfter pushing the “SONAR” switch, revers-
ing sensor system operation differs accord-ing to the detection area setting.
• Setting when towing bar is not equipped
When the gearshift lever is moved to the
“R” (Reverse) position (with M/T) or the
selector lever is moved to the “R” (RE-
VERSE) position (with A/T), the revers-
ing sensor system will operate even if cor- ner sensor operation was stopped by push-
ing the “SONAR” switch.
• Setting when towing bar is equipped
When reversing sensor system operation was stopped by pushing the “SONAR”
switch, the reversing sensor system will not operate until the engine has been stop- ped even if the gearshift lever is moved to
the “R” (Reverse) position (with M/T) or
the selector lever is moved to the “R”
(REVERSE) position (with A/T).
To resume reversing sensor system opera- tion, push the “SONAR” switch or stop and restart the engine, and then move the
gearshift lever is moved to the “R” (Re- verse) position (with M/T) or the selector
lever to the “R” (REVERSE) position (with A/T).
Warning for obstacles
If there is an obstacle behind the vehicle, a
warning buzzer sounds to indicate the dis- tance between the vehicle and the obstacle.

lowing.
• Stow cargo and luggage in the luggage
compartment whenever possible.
• Distribute cargo or luggage evenly not to
be unbalanced in weight.
• Do not place cargo or luggage on the in-
strument panel.
Also, do not stack up cargo or luggage on the front passenger’s seat or the rear seats.
Having the driver’s vision blocked, and your cargo being thrown inside the cabin
if you suddenly have to brake can cause a
serious accident or injury.
Loading a roof carrier

hicle.
Do not load luggage directly onto the roof.
For installation, refer to the instruction man-

does not exceed the allowable roof load.
If the allowable roof load is exceeded, this may cause damage to the vehicle.
The roof load is the total allowable load on
the roof (the weight of the roof carrier plus
the weight of luggage placed on the roof car- rier).
For specific figures, please refer to “Maxi-
mum roof load” on page 11-07 .
l When luggage is loaded onto the vehicle,
please make sure to drive slowly and avoid
excessive manoeuvres such as sudden brak- ing or quick turning.
In addition, place the luggage on the carrier
so that its weight is distributed evenly with the heaviest items on the bottom. Do not load items that are wider than the roof carri-
er.
The additional weight on the roof could raise
the vehicle’s centre of gravity and affect ve- hicle handling characteristics.
As a result, driving errors or emergency ma-
noeuvres could lead to a loss of control and
result in an accident.
l Before driving and after travelling a short
distance, always check the load to make sure it is securely fastened to the roof carrier.
Check periodically during your travel that
the load remains secure.
