flash rust to form on the surface. You can
restore the original shine of the exhaust pipe by cleaning it regularly, especially in winter and
after washing the vehicle.
X Clean the exhaust pipe with a care product
tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz.
Cleaning the trailer tow hitch H
Environmental note
Dispose of oily and greasy cloths in an envi-
ronmentally-responsible manner.
! Do not clean the ball coupling with a high-
pressure cleaner. Do not use solvents.
The ball coupling must be cleaned if it becomes
dirty or corroded.
X Remove rust on the ball, e.g. with a wire
brush.
X Remove dirt with a clean, lint-free cloth or a
brush.
X After cleaning, lightly oil or grease the ball
coupling.
X Check that the vehicle's trailer tow hitch is
working properly.
You can also have the maintenance work on the
ball coupling and the trailer tow hitch carried out
by a qualified specialist workshop. Interior care
Cleaning the display !
For cleaning, do not use any of the following:
R alcohol-based thinner or petrol
R abrasive cleaning agents
R commercially-available household cleaning
agents
These may damage the display surface. Do
not put pressure on the display surface when cleaning. This could lead to irreparable dam-
age to the display.
X Before cleaning the display, make sure that it
is switched off and has cooled down.
X Clean the display surface using a commer-
cially available microfibre cloth and TFT/LCD
display cleaner.
X Dry the display surface using a dry microfibre
cloth. Cleaning the plastic trim G
WARNING
Care products and cleaning agents containing solvents can cause surfaces in the cockpit to
become porous. This could result in plastic
parts breaking away when the airbags are
deployed. There is a danger of injury.
Do not use care products and cleaning agents containing solvents to clean the cockpit.
! Never attach the following to plastic surfa-
ces:
R stickers
R films
R perfume oil container or similar
You could otherwise damage the plastic.
! Do not allow cosmetics, insect repellent or
sunscreen to come in contact with the plastic trim. This maintains the high-quality look of
the surfaces.
X Wipe the plastic trim with a damp, lint-free
cloth, e.g. a microfibre cloth.
X Heavy soiling: use care and cleaning prod-
ucts recommended and approved by
Mercedes-Benz.
The surface may change colour temporarily.
Wait until the surface is dry again.
Cleaning the steering wheel and selec-
tor lever X
Thoroughly wipe with a damp cloth or use
leather care agents that have been recom-
mended and approved by Mercedes-Benz.
Cleaning wood trim and trim elements !
Do not use solvent-based cleaning agents
such as tar remover, wheel cleaners, polishes
or waxes. There is otherwise a risk of damag- ing the surface. 336

Cleaning the seat covers General notes
! Do not use a microfibre cloth to clean covers
made out of real leather, artificial leather or
DINAMICA. If used frequently, this can dam-
age the cover.
Note that regular care is essential to make sure
that the appearance and comfort of the covers
are retained over time.
Genuine leather seat covers
! To retain the natural appearance of the
leather, observe the following cleaning
instructions:
R Clean genuine leather covers carefully with
a damp cloth and then wipe the covers
down with a dry cloth.
R Make sure that the leather does not
become soaked. It may otherwise become
rough and cracked.
R Only use leather care agents that have
been tested and approved by Mercedes-
Benz. You can obtain these from a qualified
specialist workshop.
Leather is a natural product.
It has natural surface properties, e.g.:
R unevenness in structure
R marks caused by growth and injury
R subtle colour differences
These are characteristics of leather and not
material faults.
Seat covers from other materials
! Observe the following when cleaning:
R clean artificial leather covers with a cloth
moistened with a solution containing 1%
detergent (e.g. washing-up liquid).
R clean cloth covers with a microfibre cloth
moistened with a solution containing 1%
detergent (e.g. washing-up liquid). Rub carefully, and always wipe entire seat sec-
tions to avoid leaving visible lines. Leave
the seat to dry afterwards. Cleaning results
depend on the type of dirt and how long it
has been there.
R Clean DINAMICA covers with a damp cloth.
Make sure that you wipe entire seat sec-
tions to avoid leaving visible lines.
Cleaning the seat belts G
WARNING
Seat belts may be severely weakened if
bleached or coloured. This may lead to the
seat belts, for example, tearing or failing in an accident. There is an increased risk of injury,
possibly even fatal.
Never bleach or colour seat belts.
! Do not clean the seat belts using chemical
cleaning agents. Do not dry the seat belts at
temperatures above 80 † or in direct sun-
light.
X Use clean, lukewarm water and soap solution.
Cleaning the roof lining and carpets X
Roof lining: if it is very dirty, use a soft brush
or dry shampoo.
X Carpets: use the carpet and textile cleaning
agents recommended and approved by
Mercedes-Benz. Care

Insert connector ?into cigarette lighter
socket (Y page 318) or into another 12 V
socket in your vehicle (Y page 318).
X Turn the key to position 1in the ignition lock
(Y page 144).
X Press on/off switch =on tyre inflation com-

The tyre inflation compressor is switched on.
The tyre is inflated.
First, tyre sealant is pumped into the tyre. The pressure may briefly rise to approximately
500 kPa (5 bar/73 psi).
Do not switch off the tyre inflation com-
pressor during this phase.
X Let the tyre inflation compressor run for a
maximum of ten minutes. The tyre should
then have reached a pressure of at least
200 kPa (2.0 bar/29 psi).
If a pressure of 200 kPa (2.0 bar/29 psi) has
been attained after ten minutes, see "Tyre pres- sure reached" (Y page 344).
If a tyre pressure of 200 kPa (2.0 bar/29 psi) has
not been attained after ten minutes, see "Tyre
pressure not reached" (Y page 344).
If tyre sealant leaks out, make sure you clean the affected area as quickly as possible. It is pref-
erable to use clear water.
If you get tyre sealant on your clothing, have it
cleaned as soon as possible with perchloroethy-
lene.
Tyre pressure not reached If a tyre pressure of 200 kPa (2.0 bar/29 psi) has
not been reached after ten minutes:
X Switch off the tyre inflation compressor.
X Unscrew the filler hose from the valve of the
faulty tyre.
Tyre sealant may leak out when the filler hose
is unscrewed.
X Very slowly drive forwards or reverse approx-
imately 10 m.
X Pump up the tyre again.
After a maximum of ten minutes, the tyre
pressure must be at least 200 kPa (2.0 bar/
29 psi). G
WARNING
If the required tyre pressure is not reached
after the specified time, the tyre is too badly
damaged. The tyre sealant cannot repair the tyre in this instance. Damaged tyres and a tyre
pressure that is too low can significantly
impair the vehicle's braking and driving char-
acteristics. There is a risk of accident.
Do not continue driving. Contact a qualified
specialist workshop.

Tyre pressure reached G
WARNING
A tyre temporarily sealed with tyre sealant
impairs the driving characteristics and is not
suitable for higher speeds. There is a risk of
accident.
You should therefore adapt your driving style
accordingly and drive carefully. Do not exceed the specified maximum speed with a tyre that
has been repaired using tyre sealant.
The maximum permissible speed for a tyre
sealed with tyre sealant is 80 km/h. The upper
part of the TIREFIT sticker must be affixed to the
instrument cluster where it will be easily seen by
the driver.
If a tyre pressure of 200 kPa (2.0 bar/29 psi) has been reached after ten minutes:
X Switch off the tyre inflation compressor.
X Unscrew the filler hose from the valve of the
faulty tyre.
Tyre sealant may leak out when the filler hose
is unscrewed.
X Stow the tyre sealant bottle, the tyre inflation
compressor and the warning triangle.
X Pull away immediately.
X Stop after driving for approximately ten
minutes and check the tyre pressure with the
tyre inflation compressor.
The tyre pressure must now be at least
130 kPa (1.3 bar/19 psi). G
WARNING
If the required tyre pressure is not reached
after driving for a short period, the tyre is too badly damaged. The tyre sealant cannot

sure release button :next to pressure
gauge ;.
X When the tyre pressure is correct, unscrew
the filler hose from the valve of the sealed
tyre.
Tyre sealant may leak out when the filler hose
is unscrewed.
X Screw the valve cap onto the tyre valve of the
sealed tyre.
X Pull the tyre sealant bottle out of the tyre
inflation compressor.
The filler hose stays on the tyre sealant bottle.
X Drive to the nearest qualified specialist work-
shop and have the tyre changed there.
X Have the tyre sealant bottle replaced as soon
as possible at a qualified specialist workshop.
X Have the tyre sealant bottle replaced every
four years at a qualified specialist workshop. Battery (vehicle)
12 V battery – important safety notes
Hybrid vehicles: make sure that you read the
separate Owner's Manual. You could otherwise
fail to recognise dangers, e.g. due to high volt-
age.
Work on the battery, e.g. removing or fitting,
requires specialist knowledge and the use of
special tools. Therefore, always have work on
the battery carried out at a qualified specialist
workshop. G
WARNING
Work carried out incorrectly on the battery
can lead, for example, to a short circuit and
thus damage the vehicle electronics. This can lead to function restrictions applying to
safety-relevant systems, e.g the lighting sys-
tem, the ABS (anti-lock braking system) or the
ESP ®
(Electronic Stability Program). The oper-
ating safety of your vehicle may be restricted.
You could lose control of the vehicle, for
example:
R when braking
R in the event of abrupt steering manoeuvres
and/or when the vehicle's speed is not
adapted to the road conditions
There is a risk of an accident.
In the event of a short circuit or a similar inci- dent, contact a qualified specialist workshop
immediately. Do not drive any further. Alwayshave work on the battery carried out at a
qualified specialist workshop.

Electrostatic build-up can lead to the creation of sparks, which could ignite the highly explo-
sive gases of a battery. There is a risk of an

Before handling the battery, touch the vehicle body to remove any existing electrostatic

Keep away from fire and naked flames. Do not
lean over the battery. Never charge the battery
if it is still fitted to the vehicle, unless you are
using a battery charger that has been tested and
approved by Mercedes-Benz. A battery charger
unit specially adapted for Mercedes-Benz vehi-
cles and tested and approved by Mercedes-
Benz is available as an accessory. This device
permits charging of the battery while it is instal- led. Contact a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre
for information and availability. Read the battery charger's operating instructions before charg-
ing the battery.
All vehicles except vehicles with a lithium-
ion battery: if the warning and indicator lamps
on the instrument cluster do not light up at low temperatures, it is very likely that the dis-
charged battery has frozen. In this case, you
may neither jump-start the vehicle nor charge
the battery. The service life of a battery that has
been thawed may be reduced. The starting char-
acteristics may be impaired, especially at low
temperatures. Have the thawed battery
checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
Vehicles with a lithium-ion battery: at low
temperatures, do not use a battery charger to
charge a battery that has been removed. Allow
the battery to warm up gently first, if necessary. Otherwise, the service life may be reduced and
the starting characteristics impaired, especially
at low temperatures. Jump-starting
Hybrid vehicles: make sure that you read the separate Owner's Manual. You could otherwise fail
to recognise dangers, e.g. due to high voltage.
For the jump-starting procedure, use only the jump-starting connection point, consisting of a pos- itive terminal and an earth point, in the engine compartment.
All vehicles except vehicles with a lithium-ion battery: G
WARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of injury.
Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or clothing. Do not breathe in any battery gases. Do not lean over the battery. Keep the batteries out of the reach of children. Immediately rinse off battery acid
thoroughly with plenty of clean water and seek medical attention at once. G
WARNING
During charging and jump-starting, explosive gases can escape from the battery. There is a risk of an explosion.
Particularly avoid fire, naked flames, creating sparks and smoking. Ensure there is sufficient
ventilation while charging and jump-starting. Do not lean over a battery. G
WARNING
During the charging process, a battery produces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs or sparks
are created, the hydrogen gas can ignite. There is a risk of an explosion.
R Make sure that the positive terminal of a connected battery does not come into contact with
vehicle parts.
R Never place metal objects or tools on a battery.
R It is important that you observe the described order of the battery terminals when connecting
and disconnecting a battery.
R When jump-starting, make sure that the battery poles with identical polarity are connected. 348

the jump leads.
R Never connect or disconnect the battery terminals while the engine is running. G
WARNING
A discharged battery can freeze at temperatures below freezing point. When jump-starting the
vehicle or charging the battery, gases can escape from the battery. There is a risk of an explosion.
Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before charging it or jump-starting.
If the warning and indicator lamps do not light up on the instrument cluster when temperatures are low, it is probably because the discharged battery has frozen. In this case, you may neither jump-
start the vehicle nor charge the battery. The service life of a battery that has been thawed may be
reduced. The starting characteristics may be impaired, especially at low temperatures. Have the
thawed battery checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
All vehicles:
! Vehicles with a petrol engine:
avoid repeated and lengthy starting attempts. Otherwise, the
non-combusted fuel may damage the catalytic converter.
Do not use a rapid charging device to start the vehicle. If your vehicle's battery is discharged, the
engine can be jump-started from another vehicle or from a second battery using jump leads.
Observe the following points:
R The battery is not accessible in all vehicles. If the other vehicle's battery is not accessible, jump-
start the vehicle using a second battery or a jump-starting device.
R Vehicles with a petrol engine: jump-start the vehicle only when the engine and exhaust system
are cold.
R All vehicles except vehicles with a lithium-ion battery: do not start the engine if the battery
is frozen. Let the battery thaw first.
R Jump-starting may be performed only using batteries with a nominal voltage of 12 V.
R Use only jump leads that have a sufficient cross-section and insulated terminal clamps.
R If the battery is fully discharged, leave the battery that is being used to jump-start connected for
a few minutes before attempting to start. This charges the empty battery a little.
R Make sure that the two vehicles do not touch.
Make sure that:
R The jump leads are not damaged.
R Non-insulated parts of the terminal clamps do not come into contact with other metal parts while
the jump leads are connected to the battery.
R The jump leads cannot come into contact with parts that can move when the engine is running,
such as the V-belt pulley or the fan.
X Secure the vehicle by applying the electric parking brake.
X Shift the transmission to position P.
X Make sure that the ignition is switched off . All indicator lamps on the instrument cluster must be
off. When using the key, turn the key to position 0in the ignition lock and remove it (Y page 144).
X Switch off all electrical consumers, e.g. rear window heating, lighting etc.
X Open the bonnet. Jump-starting

tact a qualified specialist workshop. H
Environmental note
Check the tyre pressure regularly, at least
every 14 days.
The recommended tyre pressures for various
operating conditions can be found in the tyre
pressure table inside the fuel filler flap
(Y page 162).
Operation with an emergency spare wheel:
information on operation with an emergency
spare wheel can be found under "Emergency
spare wheel" (Y page 369).
Operation with a trailer: the applicable value
for the rear axle is the maximum value stated in the tyre pressure table inside the fuel filler flap.
The tyre pressure table may state tyre pressures for different load conditions. These are defined
in the table as different numbers of passengers and amounts of luggage. The actual number of
seats may differ from this.
If tyre sizes are not specified, the tyre pressures
stated on the tyre pressure table apply for all
tyres approved at the factory for this vehicle. If a tyre size or several tyre sizes precede a tyre
pressure, the tyre pressure information follow-
ing is valid only for these tyre sizes.
If the preceding tire sizes include the symbol
+, the tyre pressure information following
shows alternative tyre pressures. These tyre
pressures may improve the ride comfort of your
vehicle. Fuel consumption may then increase
slightly.
Use a suitable pressure gauge to check the tyre
pressure. The outer appearance of a tyre does
not give any reliable indication of the tyre pres-
sure. On vehicles fitted with the electronic tyre pressure monitor, you can also check the tyre
pressure using the on-board computer.
If possible, correct tyre pressures only when the
tyres are cold.
The tyres are cold:
R if the vehicle has been parked with the tyres
out of direct sunlight for at least three hours
and
R if the vehicle has not been driven further than
1.6 km
Depending on the outside temperature, the
vehicle speed and the load on the tyres, the tyre temperature and thus the tyre pressure changes by approximately 10 kPa (0.1 bar/1.5 psi) per
10 †. Take this into account when checking the
pressure of warm tyres. Correct the tyre pres-
sure only if it is too low for the current operating
condition.
Driving with a tyre pressure that is too high or
too low can:
R shorten the service life of the tyres
R cause increased tyre damage
R have a negative effect on handling character-
istics and thus driving safety (e.g. aquaplan-
ing)
The tyre pressure values given for low loads are
minimum values that offer you good driving
comfort characteristics.
However, you can also use the values given for
higher loads. These are permissible and will not
adversely affect the running of the vehicle. Tyre pressure loss warning system
General notes While the vehicle is in motion, the tyre pressure
loss warning system monitors the set tyre pres-
sure using the rotational speed of the wheels.
This enables the system to detect significant
pressure loss in a tyre. If the rotational speed of
a wheel changes as a result of a loss of tire
pressure, a corresponding warning message will appear in the multifunction display.
You can recognise the tyre pressure loss warn-
ing by the Run Flat Indicator active Run Flat Indicator active
Restart with OK
Restart with OK message, which appears in
the Service
Service menu of the multifunction display.
Information on the message display can be
found in the "Restarting the tyre pressure loss
warning system" section (Y page 361).360
Tyre pressureWheels and tyres
For further information on displaying this mes-
sage, refer to the "Checking the tyre pressure
electronically" section (Y page 362).
Important safety notes It is the driver's responsibility to set the tyre
pressure to the recommended cold tyre pres-
sure suitable for the operating situation
(Y page 359). Note that the correct tyre pres-
sure for the current operating situation must
first be taught-in to the tyre pressure monitor. If
a substantial loss of pressure occurs, the warn- ing threshold for the warning message is aligned
to the taught-in reference values. Restart the
tyre pressure monitor after adjusting to the cold tyre pressure (Y page 363). The current pres-
sures are saved as new reference values. This
ensures that a warning message appears only if
the tyre pressure drops significantly.
The tyre pressure monitor does not warn you of
an incorrectly set tyre pressure. Observe the
notes on the recommended tyre pressure
(Y page 359).
The tyre pressure monitor is not able to warn
you of a sudden loss of pressure, e.g. if the tyre
is penetrated by a foreign object. In the event of
a sudden loss of air, bring the vehicle to a halt by braking carefully. Avoid abrupt steering
manoeuvres.
The tyre pressure monitor has a yellow warning
lamp on the instrument cluster for indicating a
pressure loss or malfunction. Depending on how
the warning lamp flashes or lights up, a tyre
pressure that is too low or a malfunction in the
tyre pressure monitor is indicated:
R If the warning lamp is lit continuously, the tyre
pressure on one or more tyres is significantly too low. The tyre pressure monitor is not mal-
functioning.
R If the warning lamp flashes for around a
minute and then remains lit constantly, the
tyre pressure monitor is malfunctioning.
In addition to the warning lamp, a message
appears on the multifunction display. Observe
the information on display messages
(Y page 273).
It may take up to ten minutes for a malfunction
of the tyre pressure monitor to be indicated. A
malfunction will be indicated by the tyre pres-
sure warning lamp flashing for approximately
one minute and then remaining lit. When the
fault has been rectified, the tyre pressure warn- ing lamp goes out after you have driven for a few
minutes.
The tyre pressure values indicated by the on-
board computer may differ from those meas-
ured at a filling station using a pressure gauge.
The tyre pressures shown by the on-board com- puter refer to those measured at sea level. At
high altitudes, the tyre pressure values indica-
ted by a pressure gauge are higher than those
shown by the on-board computer. In this case,
do not reduce the tyre pressures.
The operation of the tyre pressure monitor can
be affected by interference from radio transmit- ting equipment (e.g. cordless headphones, two-
way radios) that may be being operated in or
near the vehicle.
Checking the tyre pressure electroni-
cally X
Make sure that the key is in position 2in the
ignition lock (Y page 144).
X Press òon the steering wheel to call up
the menu list.
X Press 9or: on the steering wheel to
select the Service
Service menu.
X Confirm by pressing aon the steering
wheel.
X Select Tyre pressure Tyre pressure with9 or:.
X Press ato confirm.
The multifunction display shows the current
tyre pressure of each wheel.
If the vehicle was parked for longer than
20 minutes, the following message appears:
