A WARNING
-After closing the luggage compartment lid,
make sure that it is latched. Otherwise the
luggage compartment lid could suddenly
open when driving, which increases the risk
of an accident.
- Never drive with the luggage compartment
lid ajar or open, because poisonous gases
can enter the vehicle interior and create the
risk of asphyx iat ion.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended when
the luggage compartment lid is open. A
child cou ld climb into the vehicle through
the luggage compartment . If the luggage
compartment lid was then closed, the child
would be trapped in the vehicle and unable
to escape . To reduce the risk of injury, do
not allow children to play in or around the
veh icle. Always keep the luggage compart
ment lid and the doors closed when the ve
hicle is not in use.
-Always make sure no one is in the luggage
compartment lid's range of motion when it
is closing, especially near the hinges . Fin
gers or hands could be pinched .

If you press the handle or one of the c:;; or rfl but
tons (vehicles with convenience key*) now, the
luggage compartment lid will either open or
close, depend ing on wha t angle it was at.
If you pull lightly on its handle, the rear lid will close .
You can manually stop the automatic open ing/
closing of the luggage compartment lid. The au
tomat ic closing process beg ins if you push down
on the rear lid .

force of the rear lid is limited, you can still
seriously injure yourself or others.
- Always ensure that no one is within range of
the rear lid when it is moving, in particular
close to the hinges and the upper and lower
edges - fingers or hands can be pinched.
- To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into the vehicle, always keep
the rear lid closed while driving . Never
transport objects larger than those which fit
completely into the luggage area, because
then the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe
cially w ith the rear lid left open . A chi ld
cou ld crawl into the car through the luggage
compartment and pull the lid sh ut, becom
ing trapped and unable to ge t out. To re
duce the risk of persona l injury, never let
children p lay in or around your vehicle. Al
ways keep the rear lid as well as the vehicle doors closed when not in use.
- If there is a luggage rack or bicycle rack
mounted on the rear lid , it may not be able
to open completely or an opened rear lid
may close by itself because of the added
we ight. So the open rear l id must be sup
ported or the weight must be removed from
the luggage rack first.

- The following applies to veh icles equipped
with the conven ience key* feature: if the re
mote control key is left in the luggage com

ly locking your key in the luggage compart
ment .
- If the vehicle battery charge drops below a
certain level, you can still open or close the
rear lid manually, however, you will need to
apply more force to close it .

After disconnecting the vehicle battery, the one
touch up and down feature must be activated
again .

key when leaving the vehicle.

The instrument illumination for the need les
and dia ls turns on when the ignition is turned
on and the lights are turned off. The illumina
tion for the d ials reduces automatically and
eventually turns off as brightness outside in
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the headlights on at the approp riate
time.

To help you see the curb when backing into a
parking space, the su rface of the mi rro r tilts
s li ght ly. For this to happen, the knob must be in
the position for the front passenger 's outside
mirror.
You can adjust the tilted mirror s urfa ce by turn
i ng the knob in the desired d irect ion. When you
move out of reverse and into another gear, the
new m irror pos ition is stored and assigned to the
key you are using .
The m irror goes back into i ts or iginal pos ition
once you drive forward faster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or turn the ignition off.

C urved mirror surfaces (fo r example convex)
enlarge the field of vision. However, they
make objects in the mirror appear smaller
and farther away . You r may estimate inco r
r ect ly when you use these mirrors to gauge
your d ista nce from the veh icles beh ind you

(for example, by runn ing into an object

- To reduce the risk of injury during sudden
braking or in a collision, the driver and front
passenger should not have their backrests in
the reclined position while driving or riding .
The safety belts and airbag system can pro
vide the greatest protection possible when
the backrests are in the upright position and
the safety belts are worn correctly. The
more a backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of injury due to an incorrect seating po
sition and safety belt position .
