Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)

The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shi~ing into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin­ tentionally.

Automatic selector lever lock
The se lector lever is locked in t he P an d N posi­
tions when the ignition is turned on. You must
press the brake pedal and t he release b utt on to

s trumen t cluster display when th e selec tor is in P
a nd N:
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
The A utomat ic Shift Lock only functions when the
ve hicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph
(2 km/ h).

matic Shift Lock is automatically deact ivated in

Release button
The re lease but ton o n the selec tor lever p revents
t h e leve r from be ing accidenta lly shifted into cer­
ta in positions . Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at diffe rent pos i­

Ignition key safety interlock
The key ca nnot be removed from the i gnition un­
l ess the se lector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed, the selector
l ever w ill be locked in the P posit ion.

w ill no longer shift at all. The engine may s tall.
D rive to yo ur author ized Aud i dea le r o r q ualified
repair fac ility immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.

You can continue driving
S tron ic tra nsmission: There is a system malfunc­
tion in th e tra nsmission . The t ransmiss io n is
sw itching to emergency mode. This m ode only
shifts in to cer tain gears or will no longer sh ift at
al l. The eng ine may st all. You canno t engage the
reverse gear. Drive to your authorized A udi dealer
or qualified repair facility immediate ly to have
the ma lfunction co rrected.

by the system by braking yourself, by accel­
erating noticeably or by swerving.

sh ip or other type of transportation . This
can prevent undesired warnings from the
braking guard system.

Braking guard: Off
This dr iver message appears if the system is
turned off via the radio/MM I* . Otherwise, if the
system is turned off, the information appears

ery time shortly after the start of the trip.
The driver message also appears if the system is
not available due to a malfunction or if the ESC is
not switched on

the system wi ll not provide warnings about a
possible collision .
Braking guard: Activated
This dr iver message appears if sharp brake pres­
sure was applied due to an acute warning .

Three white dots appear if a setting cannot be se­
l ected with the operating lever. For example, this
happens if you want to raise/lower the speed
even though there was no previously saved
speed .
ACC: Deactivation
The driver message appears in vehicles with man­
ual transmission. If the clutch pedal was pressed
down for too long, the adaptive cruise control
turns off. A chime sounds as a reminder.
ACC: Sensor blocked
This message appears if the sensor v iew is ob­
structed, for examp le by leaves, snow , heavy
spray or dirt. Clean the sensor¢
page 89, fig. 92.
ACC: not available
The driver message appears if there is a malfunc­
tion. The adaptive cruise control turns off. A
chime sounds as a reminder . Have the system
checked by an authorized Audi dealer or author­
i zed Audi Service Facility.
ACC: unavailable
The driver message appears if, for example, the
brake temperature is too high. The adaptive
cruise contro l is temporarily unavailable . A chime

Parking system

Different park assist systems may be used for
parking or maneuvering, depending on the vehi­
cle's features.
Parking sy stem (rear )* :
For the parking system (rear), the aco ustic par k
assist system is installed in the rea r of the veh icle
¢ page 105.
The rear parking assis t sys tem uses ultrason ic
sensors to dete rm ine the distance of the veh icle
from a detected obstacle . There are a tota l of
four sensors located on the rea r bumpe r (two in
the middle and two on t he sides).
Parking system (rear , with rear view

For the parking system (rear, with rear view cam ­
era),
the rear acoustic park assist system is i nte­
g rated in the rear of the ve hicle and the rear view
camera is integrated in the rear lid ¢page 108.
The parking system (rear, with rear view camera)
uses ultrasonic sensors to dete rm ine the distance
of the vehicle from a detected obstacle. There are
a tota l of four senso rs located on the rear bump­
er (two in the midd le and two on the sides) .
A WARNING
-
Make sure the senso rs are no t cov ered by
s t ick ers, depos its o r any othe r obstr uctions as

Rear parking system

The rear acoustic park assist warns you of obsta­
cles or objects behind your car.

Activation

Reversing
Dista nce warn ing when reversing starts when a n
obstacle is detected in the range of the pa rking
ass ist system . As the distance dec reases, the
t ime interva l between the aud ib le ton es becom es
s h ort er.
When the distance is less tha n 1ft (0.30 m), the
tone becomes cont inuous. At t h is point you
shou ld sto p bac king up.
Please note that low objects already s ignalled by
a war ning can d isappear from the system's detec­
t io n range and w ill not cont inue to be s ignalled .
If the distance to an obstacle remains the same,
the volume of the distance warn ing is gradually
reduced afte r abo ut 4 seconds (t his does not ap­
ply in the conti nous to ne range). App roaching an­
othe r obstacle will result in th e distance war ning
sounding at the normal volume aga in.
Malfunctions in the system
If a warning to ne is aud ib le for about five sec­
o n ds when you turn on the ignition, there is a
malfu nction in t he sys tem. Have the prob lem
cor rec ted by you r auth o riz ed Aud i dea le r.
Keep the sensors in t he rear bumper clean and
free from ice so t hat the acoustic park ass ist sys-
tem can function prope rly . .,..

Parking System
-Dampen the lens with a household alcohol­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with a
dry cloth

- Remove snow with a hand brush and ice pref­
erably with a de-icing spray

A WARNING
-The parking aid cannot replace the driver's
attention. The driver alone is responsible for
parking and similar driving maneuvers.
-Always keep your eyes on the vehicle's sur­ roundings, using the rear view mirror as
well.
- Do not allow yourself to be distracted from
traffic by the rear view camera pictures.
- If the position and the installation angle of
the camera has changed, for example, after
a rear end collision, do not continue to use
the system for safety reasons . Have it
checked by a qualified dealership.
(D Note
-Low obstacles already signaled by a warning
can disappear from the system's detection
range as they are approached and will not
continue to be signaled. Objects such as
barrier chains, trailer draw bars, thin paint­
ed vertical poles or fences may not be de­
tected by the system, posing risk of dam­
age.
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
snow or ice from the rear view camera lens -
danger of crack formation on the lens!
- When cleaning the lens, never use products
that are abrasive.
Switching on /off

The rear view camera switches on automatically
together with the acoustic park assist when you
put the vehicle in reverse.
Switching on
... Put the vehicle in reverse gear, the acoustic
parking system with rear view camera is acti­
vated automatically. Activation of the acoustic

parking system is confirmed by a brief acknowl­
edgement sound.
Switching off
""Drive faster than 9 mph (15 km/h), or
""take the vehicle out of reverse gear. The acous­
tic parking system is immediately deactivated,
and the rear view camera picture is deactivated
automatically after a period of about 15 sec­
onds, or
... switch off the ignition.
The delay in deactivating the camera provides an uninterrupted view behind the vehicle especially
when maneuvering in tight parking spaces and prevents the picture from turning off the every
time you shift out of reverse .
If the warning message appears in the display
but not the rear view camera picture, read and
confirm the warning message . The acoustic dis­
tance signal is always active.
If you press a function button on the MMI control
console, the rear view camera picture disappears.
The rear view camera picture reappears the next
time you park.
Further information on the warning message and
the MMI control console can be found in the MMI
instruction booklet.
A WARNING
-Only use the rearview camera to assist you if
it shows a good, clear picture. For example,
the image may be affected by the sun shin­
ing into the lens, dirt on the lens or if there
is a defect.
- Use the rearview camera only with the rear
lid completely closed. Make sure any objects
you may have mounted on the rear lid do
not block the rearview camera.
@ Tips
-The rear view camera picture is available as
soon as the MMI Display or the MMI is
switched on, or the start-up phase is com­
pleted .
- The sensors must be kept clean and free of
snow and ice for the park assist to operate.

ing system is sw itched on, the volume of the
active aud io source is lowered.
The new ly adjusted value is briefly heard from
the signa l generator. The settings are automat i­
cally stored and assigned to the remote contro l
key.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that the volume and fre­ quency of the wa rning tones is adj usted so
that you can eas ily hea r the acoust ic dis­
tance signal even if the radio is playing, the air-conditioner b lower is on H igh or the re is
a high level of outside noise .
Parking Sys tem
-Check the settings whenever someone e lse
has driven the vehicle before you.
(D Tips
- The warn ing tones can also be adjus ted di­
rectly from the rea r view camera image .
Simp ly press the Settings* control button.
- Changed settings are activated when park ­
ing assist is switched on again.
Error messages

If a warning tone is aud ible for about five sec ­
onds when you turn on the ignition, there is a
malfunction in the system. Have the prob lem
corrected by your authorized Audi dea ler.

Airbag syste m
-The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof .
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
on the rear seat .
- If you must install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­ cause of exceptional circumstances and the
P ASS ENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immed iate ly install
the rear-fac ing ch ild safety seat in a rear
seat ing pos ition and have the airbag system
inspected by your authorized Audi dea ler.
- Forward-facing ch ild safety seats installed
on the front passenger's seat may interfere
with the deployment of the airbag and
cause serious personal injury to the child .
A WARNING
If, in exceptional circumstances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing chi ld restraint on the
front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-facing seat
has been designed and certified by its man­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side a irbag .
- Never put the forward-facing child restraint
up against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
-Always move the passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat 's fore and aft
adjustment range, as fa r away from the air­
bag as possib le before insta lling the for­
ward-facing child restra int. The bac krest
mus t be adjusted to an up right posit ion.
- Make s ure that the
PASSENGER AI R BAG
OFF
light comes on and s tays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on.
A WARNING
To red uce the risk of serio us in jury, make s ure
that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light wi ll
be displayed whenever a child restraint is in­
stalled on the front passenger seat and the
ign ition is switched on.

- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OF F light does
not stay on, perform the checks described
¢ page 139, Monitoring the Advanced Air­
bag System .
-Take the child restra int off the front passen­
ger seat and install it properly at one of the
rear seat positions if the
PA SSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light does not stay on .
- Have the airbag system inspected by your
author ized Audi dealer immed iately .
- Always carefully follow instructions from
child restraint manufacturers when instal ­
ling child restra ints.
A WARNING
If, in exceptional circumstances, you must in­
stall a forward or rearward-fac ing child re­
stra int on the fron t passenger's seat:
- Improper installat ion of child restraints can
reduce the ir effectiveness or even prevent
them from provid ing any pro tect ion.
- An improperly installed child res tra int can
inter fere with the airbag as it deploys and
serious ly injure or even kil l the child -eve n
w ith an Advanced A irbag System.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instructions provided with the child safe ty
seat o r carrier.
- Never p lace add ition al items on the seat
that can increase the tota l weight registered
by the weight -sensing mat and can cause in ­
jury in a crash .

- Never place or attach accessories or other objects (such as cupholders, telephone
brackets, la rge, heavy or bulky objects) on
t h e doors, over or near th e area marked
"AIRBAG" on t he s teering wheel, instru­
ment pane l, seat backrests or between
those areas and you rself. These objects
cou ld cause injury in a crash, especially
when the airbags inflate.
- Never re cline the front passenger's seat to
transport objects. Items can also move into
the area of the side airbag or t he front a ir ­
bag during braking or in a sudden maneu­
ver . Objects near the airbags can become
projectiles and cause injury, particular ly
when the seat is reclined.
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy can
cause breathing problems for people w ith a
history of asthma or other breathing condi­
tions.
-To reduce the risk of breathing problems, those w ith asthma or other respiratory con­
ditions should get fresh air right away by
gett ing out of the veh icle o r opening w in­
dows or doo rs.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags de­
ploy, wash your hands and face with mild
soap and wa ter before eat ing.
- Be careful not to get the dust into your eyes,
o r in to any cuts or s cratches.
- If the resid ue should get into your eyes,
flush them with water.
Monitoring the
Advanced Airbag System

that it is functioning properly whenever the igni­
tion is on . Every time you turn on the ignition, the
airbag system indicator light

El (Canada models) will come on for a few sec­
onds (function check).
The system must be in spected when the
indicator light

- does not come on when the ignition is sw itched
on,
- does not go out a few seconds after you have
sw itched on the ignit ion, or
- comes on while driv ing .
If an airbag system malfunction is detected, the
indicator light will first start flashing to catch the
driver's attention and then stay on continuously
to serve as a constant rem inder to have the sys­
tem inspected immediately.
If a malfunction occurs that turns the front air­
bag on the passenger side off, the
PAS SENGER
AIR BAG OFF
lig ht will come on and stay on
whenever the ignition is on .
A WARNING
f-
An airbag system that is not functioning prop-
e rly cannot provide supplemental protect ion
in a fronta l crash.

comes when the veh icle is being used, have
the system inspec ted immedia tely by your
author ized Audi dealer. It is possi ble that
the air bag will inflate when it is not sup ­
posed to, or w ill not inflate when it should.
