in your vehicle iselectronically controlledto
produce maximum powerandsmooth operation.
The recommended operatingprocedures forthis
transmission areshown onthe following pages.
Follow theseprocedures formaximum vehicle
performance anddriving enjoyment.
Engine powermaybeautomatically re-
duced toprotect theCVT ifthe engine
speed increases quicklywhendriving on
slippery roadsorwhile being tested on
some dynamometers.
Starting thevehicle

1. After starting theengine, fullydepress the
foot brake pedalbefore moving theshift
lever outofthe P(Park) position.
This CVTisdesigned sothat thefoot
brake pedalmustbedepressed before
shifting fromP(Park) toany driving
position whiletheignition switchisin
the ONposition.
The shift lever cannot bemoved outof
the P(Park) position andinto anyof
the other positions ifthe ignition
switch isplaced inthe LOCK ,OFF or
ACC position orifthe key isremoved. 2.
Keep thefoot brake pedaldepressed, push
the shift lever button andmove theshift lever
to adriving position.
3. Release theparking brakeandfoot brake
pedal, andthen gradually startthevehicle in
motion.
WARNING
. Do not depress theaccelerator
pedal whileshifting fromP(Park)
or N(Neutral) toR(Reverse) ,D
(Drive) ,or manual shiftmode (ifso
equipped) .Always depress the
brake pedaluntilshifting iscom-
pleted. Failure todo socould cause
you tolose control andhave an
accident.
. Cold engine idlespeed ishigh, so
use caution whenshifting intoa
forward orreverse gearbefore the
engine haswarmed up.
. Never shifttoP(Park) orR(Re-
verse) whilevehicle ismoving. Fail-
ure todo socould cause youtolose
control andhave anaccident.
CAUTION
. Except inan emergency, donot shift
to the N(Neutral) positionwhile
driving. Coasting withthetransmis-
sion inthe N(Neutral) positionmay
cause serious damage tothe trans-
mission.
. When stopping thevehicle onan
uphill grade, donot hold thevehicle
by depressing theaccelerator pedal.
The foot brake should beused for
this purpose.
. Do not downshift abruptlyonslip-
pery roads. Thismay cause aloss of
control.

WARNING
Apply theparking brakeifthe shift lever
is in any position whiletheengine is
not running. Failuretodo socould
cause thevehicle tomove unexpectedly

If the ignition switchisplaced inthe OFF or
ACC position forany reason whiletheshift lever
is in any positions otherthantheP(Park) ,the
ignition switchcannot beplaced inthe LOCK
position.
If the ignition switchcannot beplaced inthe
L OCK position, performthefollowing steps:
1. Apply theparking brakewhenthevehicle is
stopped.
2. Place theignition switchinthe ON position
while depressing thefoot brake pedal.
3. Move theshift lever tothe P(Park) position.
4. Place theignition switchinthe OFF position.
CAUTION
T o prevent transmission damage,move
the shift lever tothe P(Park) orR
(Reverse) positiononlywhen thevehi-
cle iscompletely stopped.

Remember nottodrive athigh speeds for
extended periodsoftime inlower thanM7
(except forNISMO RSmodels) orM8
(NISMO RSmodels) range.Thisreduces
fuel economy .
. Inthe manual shiftmode, thetransmis-
sion maynotshift tothe selected
range. Thishelps maintain drivingper-
formance andreduces thechance of
vehicle damage orloss ofcontrol.
When thissituation occurs,theCon-
tinuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
position indicator lightwillblink and
the chime willsound.
. Inthe manual shiftmode, thetransmis-
sion automatically shiftsdownto1st
gear before thevehicle comestoa
stop. When accelerating again,itis
necessary toshift uptothe desired
range.
. When theCVT fluidtemperature isextre-
mely low,the manual shiftmode maynot
work andautomatically shiftasadrive mode.
This isnot amalfunction. Inthis case, return
the shift lever tothe D(Drive) position and
drive forawhile andthen shifttothe manual
shift mode.
. When theCVT fluidtemperature ishigh, the
shift range mayupshift atalower engine
speed thanusual. Thisisnot amalfunction.
Accelerator downshiftÐInDposition Ð

For passing orhill climbing, fullydepress the
accelerator pedaltothe floor. Thisshifts the
transmission downintoalower gear,depending
on the vehicle speed.
High fluidtemperature protectionmode

This transmission hasahigh fluidtemperature
protection mode.Ifthe fluid temperature be-
comes toohigh (forexample, whenclimbing
steep grades inhigh temperature withheavy
loads) ,engine powerand,under somecondi-
tions, vehicle speedwillbedecreased auto-
matically toreduce thechance oftransmission
damage. Vehicle speed canbecontrolled with
the accelerator pedal,buttheengine andvehicle
speed maybelimited.
Fail-safe

If the vehicle isdriven underextreme
conditions, suchasexcessive wheelspin-
ning andsubsequent hardbraking, the
fail-safe systemmaybeactivated. TheMIL
may illuminate toindicate thefail-safe
mode isactivated. (SeeªMalfunction In-
dicator Light(MIL)º (P.2-18) .)This will
occur evenifall electrical circuitsare
functioning properly.Inthis case, place
the ignition switchinthe OFF position and

check thetransmission andrepair ifne-
cessary.
WARNING
When thehigh fluid temperature pro-
tection modeorfail-safe operation
occurs, vehiclespeedmaybegradually
reduced. Thereduced speedmaybe
lower thanother traffic,which could
increase thechance ofacollision. Be
especially carefulwhendriving. Ifne-
cessary, pulltothe side ofthe road ata
safe place andallow thetransmission
to return tonormal operation, orhave it
repaired if
necessary.

Shift lockrelease

If the battery charge islow ordischarged, the
shift lever maynotbemoved fromtheP(Park)
position evenwiththebrake pedal depressed
and theshift lever button pushed.
T o move theshift lever, perform thefollowing
procedure:
1. Place theignition switchinthe OFF or
L OCK position.
2. Apply theparking brake.
3. Remove theshift lockrelease cover

Push down theshift lockrelease usinga
suitable tool.
5. Push theshift lever button andmove the
shift lever tothe N(Neutral) positionwhile
holding downtheshift lockrelease.
Place theignition switchinthe ON position. The
vehicle maybemoved tothe desired location.
Replace theremoved shiftlockrelease cover
after theoperation.
If the battery isdischarged completely,the
steering wheelcannot beunlocked. Donot
move thevehicle withthesteering wheellocked.
If the shift lever cannot bemoved outofthe P
(Park) position, haveaNISSAN dealercheckthe
CVT system assoon aspossible.
WARNING
If the shift lever cannot bemoved from
the P(Park) position whiletheengine is
running andthebrake pedalisde-
pressed, thestop lights maynotwork.
Malfunctioning stoplights couldcause
an accident injuringyourself and
others.

A WD shift tips

. Ifthe AWD mode switch isoperated while
making aturn, accelerating ordecelerating,
or ifthe ignition switchisturned offwhile in
the AWD-V orAWD mode, youmay feela
jolt. This isnormal.
. The oiltemperature ofpower trainparts will
increase ifthe vehicle iscontinuously
operated underconditions wherethediffer-
ence inrotation between thefront andrear
wheels islarge (wheel slip),such aswhen
driving thevehicle onrough roadsthrough
sand ormud orwhen freeing astuck vehicle.
In these cases, theAWD warning lightblinks
rapidly andtheAWD mode changes tothe
2WD mode toprotect thepower trainparts.
If you stop driving withtheengine idlingand
wait until thewarning lightstops blinking,
the AWD returns tothe AWD-V orAWD
mode.
. Brake distance inthe AWD mode isthe
same as2WD.
CAUTION
. Do not start theengine withthe
AWD mode switch inany mode in
the following cases: Ð
when thevehicle isplaced ona
free-roller orjacking upthe
vehicle withthefront tires
raised andtherear tires onthe
ground.
Ð when towing thevehicle withthe
rear tires raised fromthe
ground.
. Operate theAWD mode switch only
when driving straight. Donot oper-
ate the AWD mode switch when
making aturn orbacking up.
. Do not operate theAWD mode
switch withthefront wheel spin-
ning.
. Engine idlingspeed ishigh while
warming upthe engine. Beespe-
cially careful whenstarting ordriv-
ing onslippery surfaces withthe
AWD mode switch setinthe AWD-V
or AWD mode.

The electric powersteering systemisdesigned
to provide powerassistwhiledriving tooperate
the steering wheelwithlight force.
When thesteering wheelisoperated repeatedly
or continuously whileparking ordriving atavery
low speed, thepower assistforthe steering
wheel willbereduced. Thisisto prevent
overheating ofthe electric powersteering
system andprotect itfrom getting damaged.
While thepower assistisreduced, steering
wheel operation willbecome heavy.When the
temperature ofthe electric powersteering
system goesdown, thepower assistlevelwill
return tonormal. Avoidrepeating suchsteering wheel
operations thatcould cause theelectric
power steering systemtooverheat.
Y ou may hear asound whenthesteering wheel
is operated quickly.However, thisisnot a
malfunction.
If the electric powersteering warninglight
illuminates whiletheengine isrunning, itmay
indicate theelectric powersteering systemis
not functioning properlyandmay need servicing.
Have theelectric powersteering system
checked byaNISSAN dealer.(SeeªElectric
power steering warninglightº(P.2-14) .)
When theelectric powersteering warninglight
illuminates withtheengine running, thepower
assist forthe steering willcease operation. You
will still have control ofthe vehicle. However,
greater steering effortisneeded, especially in
sharp turnsandatlow speeds.

Normal operation

The ABS operates atspeeds above3to 6MPH
(5 to10 km/h) .The speed variesaccording to
road conditions.
When theABS senses thatoneormore wheels
are close tolocking up,the actuator rapidly
applies andreleases hydraulic pressure. This
action issimilar topumping thebrakes very
quickly .You may feelapulsation inthe brake
pedal andhear anoise fromunder thehood or
feel avibration fromtheactuator whenitis
operating. Thisisnormal andindicates thatthe
ABS isoperating properly.However, thepulsa-
tion may indicate thatroad conditions are
hazardous andextra careisrequired while
driving.

The Vehicle Dynamic Control(VDC)system
uses various sensors tomonitor driverinputs
and vehicle motion. Undercertain drivingcon-
ditions, theVDC system helpstoperform the
following functions.
. Controls brakepressure toreduce wheel
slip onone slipping drivewheel sopower is
transferred toanon slipping drivewheel on
the same axle.
. Controls brakepressure andengine output
to reduce drivewheel slipbased onvehicle
speed (traction controlfunction) .
. Controls brakepressure atindividual wheels
and engine outputtohelp thedriver maintain
control ofthe vehicle inthe following
conditions:
Ð understeer (vehicletendstonot follow
the steered pathdespite increased
steering input)
Ð oversteer (vehicletendstospin dueto
certain roadordriving conditions) .
The VDC system canhelp thedriver tomaintain
control ofthe vehicle, butitcannot prevent loss
of vehicle controlinall driving situations.
When theVDC system operates, theVDC
warning light
in the instrument panelflashes
so note thefollowing:
. The road maybeslippery orthe system may
determine someaction isrequired tohelp keep
thevehicle onthe steered path.
. You may feelapulsation inthe brake pedal
and hear anoise orvibration fromunder the
hood. Thisisnormal andindicates thatthe
VDC system isworking properly.
. Adjust yourspeed anddriving tothe road
conditions.
If a malfunction occursinthe system, theVDC
warning light
illuminates inthe instrument
panel. TheVDC system automatically turnsoff.
The VDC OFFswitch isused toturn offthe VDC
system. TheVDC offindicator
illuminates to
indicate theVDC system isoff. When theVDC
switch isused toturn offthe system, theVDC
system stilloperates toprevent onedrive wheel
from slipping bytransferring powertoanon
slipping drivewheel. TheVDC warning light
flashes ifthis occurs. Allother VDCfunctions
are off,and theVDC warning light
will not
flash. TheVDC system isautomatically resetto
on when theignition switchisplaced inthe off
position thenback tothe onposition.

The computer hasabuilt-in diagnostic feature
that tests thesystem eachtimeyoustart the
