R release the parking brake
R shift the automatic transmission out of park

R start the engine
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave
children and animals unattended in the vehi-
cle. Keep the keys out of the reach of children.
Stow luggage or loads preferably in the lug-
gage compartment. Observe the loading
guidelines (Y page 316).
United Kingdom only: G
WARNING
When the double locks are activated, the
doors can no longer be opened from the
inside. People in the vehicle can no longer get out, e.g. in hazardous situations. There is a
risk of injury. Therefore, do not leave any people unsuper-
vised in the vehicle, particularly children, eld-
erly people or people in need of special assis-
tance. Do not activate the double lock when
people are in the vehicle.
If the vehicle has been locked with the key,
the double lock function is activated as stand-
ard. It is then not possible to open the doors
from inside the vehicle. You can deactivate
the double lock function by deactivating the
interior motion sensor (Y page 83). The doors
can then be opened from the inside after the vehicle has been locked from the outside. You
can open the rear doors from inside the vehi- cle if they are not secured by the child-proof
locks (Y page 71). The anti-theft alarm system
is triggered if the door is opened from the
inside. Switch off the alarm (Y page 81). Unlocking and opening the doors
from the inside
! The side windows will not open/close if
the battery is discharged or if the side win- dows have iced up. It will then not be pos-
sible to close the door. Do not attempt to
force the door to close. You could other-
wise damage the door or the side window.
When a door is opened, the side window on
that side opens slightly. When the door is
closed, the side window is raised again. Doors

For all countries except the United King-
dom:
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. You can only open
the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they

the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm sys- tem. Switch off the alarm (Y page 81).

vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. This can be useful if you wish to lock the vehicle before pulling away, for

If all the doors and the tailgate are closed,
the vehicle locks.
This does not lock or unlock the fuel filler flap. You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the inside if the vehicle has been locked with
the key or KEYLESS-GO.
For all countries except the United King-
dom:
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked.
If the vehicle has previously been locked with the key from the outside, opening a door from
the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm sys- tem. Switch off the alarm (Y page 81).
You can open the rear doors from inside the
vehicle if they are not secured by the child-

When a locked door is opened from inside the
vehicle, the previous unlocking process will
be observed if the vehicle has been:
R locked with the locking button for the cen-
tral locking or
R locked automatically
The vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had pre- viously been fully unlocked. Only the door
which has been opened from the inside is
unlocked if only the driver's door had been
previously unlocked.
Only for the United Kingdom: if the vehicle
has been locked with the key, the double lock function is activated as standard. It is then not
possible to open the doors from inside the
vehicle. You can deactivate the double lock

If you press one of the two buttons and do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has already
been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore be locked out if:
R the vehicle is being pushed
R the vehicle is being towed
R the vehicle is being tested on a dynamom-
eter
You can also activate and deactivate the auto- matic locking function using the on-board
computer (Y page 260). Unlocking the driver's door (emer-

If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the key or KEYLESS-GO, use the emergency
key element.
If you use the emergency key element to
unlock and open the driver's door, the anti-
theft alarm system will be triggered

X Press the locking button on the driver’s

X Check whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press the locking knobs
down by hand if necessary.
X Close the driver's door. X
Take the emergency key element out of the
key (Y page 89).
X Insert the emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the emergency key element clockwise
as far as it will go to position 1.
On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element anti-clockwise.
X Turn the emergency key element back and
remove it.
X Make sure that the doors and the tailgate
are locked.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key (Y page 89).
i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-

ing automatic closing of the tailgate. More-
over, people, e.g. children, may be standing in the closing area or may enter the closing area
during the closing process. There is a risk of
injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the closing area during the closing process. 96

Closing automatically
Vehicles with the EASY-PACK tailgate:
you
can also close the tailgate automatically from
outside the vehicle. Example: vehicles with KEYLESS-GO
X To close: press button :on the tailgate.
or X Vehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate and
KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start func-
tion: if the key is located in the immediate
vicinity of the vehicle, press the Fbut-
ton on the key.
You can release the button as soon as the
tailgate starts to close.
Vehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate and
KEYLESS-GO: when the driver's door is
closed you can simultaneously close the tail- gate and lock the vehicle. The KEYLESS-GO
key must be in the rear detection range of the vehicle.
X To close the tailgate and lock the vehi-
cle: press locking button ;on the tailgate.
If KEYLESS-GO detects a key outside the
vehicle within the rear detection range, the
tailgate closes.
The vehicle is locked.
X To stop the closing process : press but-
ton :on the tailgate again.
or
X Pull the handle in the tailgate.
or
X Press the Fbutton on the key until the
tailgate stops. or
X Press or pull the remote operating switch

Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
R press the Fbutton on the key
R pull or press the remote operating switch
on the driver's door
R press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate
R pull the handle on the tailgate
! The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.
Two warning tones sound while the tailgate is opening or closing.
The opening dimensions of the tailgate can be
found in the "Vehicle data" section
(Y page 410).
Opening and closing automatically You can open the tailgate from the driver's
seat when the vehicle is stationary and
unlocked.
It is only possible to close the tailgate from
the driver's seat on vehicles with the EASY-

Folding the exterior mirrors in/out elec-
trically X
Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock (Y page 165).

Both exterior mirrors fold in or out.
i Make sure that the exterior mirrors are
always folded out fully while driving. They
could otherwise vibrate.
i If you are driving faster than 47 km/h, you
can no longer fold in the exterior mirrors.
Resetting the exterior mirrors If the battery has been disconnected or com-
pletely discharged, the exterior mirrors must
be reset. The exterior mirrors will otherwise
not fold in when you select the "Fold in mir-
rors when locking" function in the on-board
computer (Y page 261).
X Turn the key to position 1in the ignition
lock (Y page 165).

Folding the exterior mirrors in/out
automatically If the "Fold in mirrors when locking" function
is activated in the on-board computer

the exterior mirrors fold in automatically as
soon as you lock the vehicle from the out-

ically as soon as you unlock the vehicle and
then open the driver's or front-passenger

i If the exterior mirrors have been folded in
manually, they do not fold out.
Exterior mirror pushed out of position If an exterior mirror has been pushed out of
position (forwards or backwards), proceed as
follows:
X Vehicles without electrically folding
exterior mirrors: manually move the exte-
rior mirror into the correct position.
X Vehicles with electrically folding exte-
rior mirrors: press and hold the mirror-
folding button (Y page 120) until you hear a
click and the mirror audibly engages into
position.
The mirror housing is engaged again and
you can adjust the exterior mirrors as usual
(Y page 119). Automatic anti-dazzle mirrors

WARNING
Electrolyte may escape if the glass of an auto- matic anti-dazzle mirror breaks. Electrolyte is
harmful and causes irritation. It must not
come into contact with your skin, eyes, res-
piratory organs or clothing or be swallowed.
There is a risk of injury.
If you come into contact with electrolyte,
observe the following:
R immediately rinse off electrolyte from your
skin with water.
R immediately and thoroughly rinse electro-
lyte out of eyes using clean water. 120

Starting procedure with the key To start the engine using the key instead of
the Start/Stop button, pull the Start/Stop
button out of the ignition lock.
X To start a diesel engine : turn the key to
position 2in the ignition lock (Y page 165).
The % preglow indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up.
X Turn the key to position 3in the ignition
lock (Y page 165) and release it as soon as
the engine is running.
Starting procedure using the Start/
Stop button The Start/Stop button can be used to start
the vehicle manually without inserting the key
into the ignition lock. The key must be in the
vehicle and the Start/Stop button must be
inserted in the ignition lock. This mode for
starting the engine operates independently of the ECO start/stop automatic engine start
function.
You can start the engine if a valid key is in thevehicle. Switch off the engine and always take
the key with you when leaving the vehicle,
even if you only leave it for a short time. Pay
attention to the important safety notes. X
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Vehicles with manual transmission:
depress the clutch pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Press the Start/Stop button once
(Y page 165).
Vehicles with a petrol engine: the engine
starts.
Vehicles with a diesel engine: preglow is
activated and the engine starts. Pulling away

WARNING
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
If the engine speed is above the engine idling speed and you then engage transmission
position Dor R, the vehicle may accelerate
suddenly. There is a risk of an accident.
When engaging transmission position Dor R,
always keep the brake pedal firmly depressed
and do not depress the accelerator pedal at
the same time.
! Vehicles with manual transmission:
change gear in good time and avoid spin-
ning the wheels. You could otherwise dam-
age the vehicle.
Depress the accelerator carefully when pull-
ing away.
The vehicle locks centrally once you have
pulled away. The locking knobs in the doors
drop down.
You can open the doors from the inside at any
time.
You can also deactivate the automatic locking feature (Y page 260).
