To help you see the cu rb when backing into a
parking space, the surface of the mi rror tilts
slightly. For this to happen, the knob must be in
the position for the front passenger 's outside
mirror .
You can adj ust the ti lted mirror surface by turn ­
ing the knob in the desired direction . When you
move out of reverse and into another gear, the
new mirror position is stored and assigned to the
key you are using.
The mirror goes back into its origina l position
once you drive forward faster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or turn the ignition
off.
A WARNING
Curved mirror surfaces (convex or spherical*)
increase your field of view. Remember that
vehicles or other objects will appear smaller
and farther away than when seen in a flat mir­
ror .
If you use this mirro r to estimate distan­
ces of following veh icles when changing
lanes, you cou ld es timate incorrectly and
cause an accident .
(D Note
-If the mirror hous ing was moved by force
(fo r example, by running into an object
when maneuvering the vehicle), the m irror
must be folded all the way in using the pow­
er folding function. The mirror housing
must not be moved back into place by hand
because this would impair the function of
the mirror mechanism.
- If you wash the vehicle in an automatic car
wash, you must fold the exterior mirrors in
Li ghts a nd Visio n
to reduce the risk of damage to the mirrors.
Never fold power fo lding exterior mirrors*
by hand . On ly fold them in and out us ing
the power controls.
@ Tips
- If the power adjusting function malfunc­
tions, the glass in both mirrors can be ad­
justed by pressing on the edge of it by hand.
- The exterior mirror settings are stored with

A WARNING
Electrolyte fluid can leak from automatic dim ­
ming mirrors if the g lass is broken. Electrolyte
flu id can irritate skin, eyes and respiratory
system.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to e lectro­
lyte can cause irritat ion to the respiratory
system, especially among people with asth­
ma or other resp iratory conditions. Get
fresh a ir immediately by leaving the vehicle
or, if t hat is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.

You can adjust the settings for the rear sun shade
so the shade retracts automatically when you se­lect the reverse gear. To do this, select the

sure there is nothing in its way and that it has
a free path to travel. This could cause person­

- Pressing the button rn several times con­
secutive ly can trigger the overload protec·
tion. The sun shade can only be extended/
retracted again after a brief waiting period.
- The rear window sun shade only funct ions
when the vehicle interior is warmer than
14°F (-10°C).

vehicles with a ra in sensor* the wipers turn on in
the rain once the vehicle speed exceeds approxi ­
mately 2 mph (4 km/h). The higher the sensitivi ­
ty of the rain sensor* is set (switch @to the
right), the earlier the windshield wipers react to
moisture on the windshield . In some models, you
can switch ra in sensor mode off and switch inter­
mittent mode on in the MMI* . Select : !CAR I func­
tion button

er assist> Rain sensor.
In intermittent mode ,
you can adjust the interval time using the@
switch.

® -Clean the w indshie ld. To eliminate water
droplets, the windshield wiper performs one af­
terwipe operation after several seconds whi le
driv ing. You can switch this function off by mov­
ing the lever to position ® within
10 seconds of
the afterwipe operation. The afterwipe function is reactivated the next time the ignition is switch­
ed on .
Cleaning the headlights*. The headlight washer
system* operates only when the headlights are
on . If you move the lever to position @, the
headlights are washed in intervals.
A WARNING
--The rain sensor is only intended to assist the
driver. The driver is still respons ible for
manually switch ing the wipers on according
to the visibility conditions.
- The windshield may not be treated with wa­
ter-repelling windshield coating agents. Un­
favorable conditions, such as wetness, dark­
ness, low sun, can result in increased glare.
Wiper blade chatter is also possib le .
- Properly functioning windshield wiper
blades are required for a clear view and safe
driving

Seats and storage

The memo ry buttons are located in the driver's
door .
Switching the memory function on/off
• Press the !ON/O FF I button to switch the memo­
ry function on/off. The word
OFF lights up when
the memo ry function is switched off . Seat pro­
files are neither stored nor recalled.
Storing a seat profile
• Press the !SE T! button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings.
• Press a memory button
([I I or ~) briefly . A tone
confirms that the sett ings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
• If the driver's door is open and the ig nit ion is
switch ed off, press the memory button.
• If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
switched on, press and hold the memory but­
ton until the seat adjustment is comp lete .
.&_ WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat sett ing can only
be recalled when the vehicle is stat ionary -
otherwise you risk having an accident .
- In an emergency the recall procedure can be
cancelled by pressing the
!ON/OFF I switch or
by tapping the memory buttons.

The cigarette lighter should only be used as a
power source for the t ire repair kit when abso­

Driving
Sw itching the ignition on /off
If you would like to switch the ignition o n wit h­
out starting the engine, fo llow these steps:
• Inse rt the key into the ignition lock.
• Press the key brief ly
wi thout p ress ing the b rake
pedal.
• To sw itch the ignition off , press the key again.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l loads
are sw itched off temporar ily.
You ca n only remove the key with the ignition
sw itched off .
If the engine should not start immedia tely , the
starti ng process is automatically stopped after a
short time . Repeat sta rting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces - dange r of asp hyxiation.
- Never remove the ignition key from the ign i­
t ion loo k while the vehicle is moving . Other­
wise, the steering lock cou ld sudden ly en­
gage and you would not be able to steer the
vehicle.
- Always ta ke the key with yo u wheneve r you
leave your vehi cle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical eq uipment
s uch as the power windows cou ld be operat­
ed . T his can lead to ser ious injury.
- Never leave ch ildren or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing peop le from escap ing
from the vehicle on their own in the event of an emergency . Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­ posed to very high o r very low tempe ra­
t ur es.

Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and heavy
eng ine loads until the eng ine has reached op­
erati ng temperature - otherwise you risk en­
gine dam age.

6 mph (10 km/ h) and press the brake peda l.

-Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steer ing is not guaranteed. You must use
more force to turn or b rake if necessary. Be­
caus e you cannot stee r and brake as you
usually wo uld, this cou ld lead to crashes
a nd se rio us in juries.

Your veh icle is equipped w ith an electromechan i­
cal parking b rake. The par king b rake is designed
to p revent the veh icle from rolling unintentional­
ly and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the norma l funct ions of a tradit ion­
a l hand bra ke, the e lectromechan ical pa rking
b rake provides var ious convenience and safety
f u nctions.
When start ing f rom rest
- The integral starting assist helps you when
driv ing by automat ically releasing the parking

-When sta rting on inclines , the starting assist
prevents the vehicle from un intent ionally roll­
ing back. The bra kin g for ce of the par kin g b rake
is no t released until sufficien t driv ing fo rce has
been built up at the wheels .

A WARNING
If a drive range is eng age d with the vehicle

tion switched off, the indicator lights in the
switch and -(USA models) . (Cana­

start t he engine, release the parking b rake
or operate elect rical equipment (e.g. power

- When the veh icle is locked, no one -part icu­
larly no t chi ld ren shou ld remain in the ve hi­
cle. Lo cked doors m ake it more d ifficul t for
emergency workers to get into the veh icle -
putting lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The star ting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

The speed is kept constant by modify ing engine
power or thro ugh an active brake intervention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around
yo u when the cruise control is in operation .
You are always responsib le for your speed
and the dista nce between yo ur vehicle and
other vehicles .
- For reasons of safety, cruise cont ro l should
not be us ed in the city, in stop-and-go t raf­
fic, on twisting roads and w hen road condi­
tio ns are poor (such as i ce, fog, gr avel,
heavy rain and hyd rop laning) - r is k of acci­
dent.
- T urn off t he cr uise control temporari ly w hen
en ter ing turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in
constr uction zones .
- P lease note tha t inadvertent ly " rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is be­
cause the cruise contro l is overridden by the
dr iver's acceleration .
- If a brake system malfunction such as ove r­
heating occurs when the cruise control sys­
tem is switched on, the braking function in
the system may be sw itched off. The other
cruise control func tions remain act ive as
lo ng as the indicato r light

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the
bra kes apply automat ica lly.
Dri ving
Changing speed
• To inc rease/decrease the speed in in cr ements,

• To increase/decrease the speed quic kly, hold
the lever in the
0 10 di rect ion until the de ­
sired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase yo ur speed, e.g . if yo u want to pass
someone . The speed you saved ear lie r will re­
s u me as soon as you let off of the accelerator
pedal.
If, however , you exceed yo ur saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes, the
cruise control will be turned off temporarily . The
green symbo l in the d isplay turns white. The
saved speed rema ins the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehi­
cle is not moving.
• Switch on the ignition.
• Pull lever into position CD r::> page 78, fig. 81.
• Press the lever in the
0 or O direction to in-
crease or decrease your speed.
• Release the lever to save that speed .
This function makes it possible, for examp le, to
save the speed you want before dr iv ing o n the
highway. Once on the highway, activate the cru ise
control by pu lli ng the lev er toward CD-
