- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety haz ­

- If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada mod­
e ls) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with t he ABS and ESC ind icator
lig hts, the ABS/ESC regulat ing funct ion may
have fa iled. Functions that stabilize the ve­
h icl e are no longe r available. This co uld
c a use t he ve hicle to swerve and increas e t he
ris k of s liding. Drive carefu lly to the neares t
author ized Audi dealer or other qualified
wo rkshop and have the malf unct ion co rrect ­
ed.
- If the b rake wa rning/in dicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the pa rk­
ing brake is released, or lights up wh ile you
are driving, the fl uid level in the brake f lu id
rese rvoir is too low. If y ou believe t hat it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nea rest authorized A udi dealer
or qualified workshop and have t he b rake
sy stem inspec ted.
- Always keep in min d that after s evera l brak e
a pplicat ions, you wi ll n eed gre ate r pr essure

no t rely on st rained bra kes to respond with
maxim um stop ping power i n cr itica l s itua ­
tions . You must a llow for increased braking
d istances. The extra d istance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an accident .

tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. Seek profess ional as ­

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears , the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low .

~ Check coolant level.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 193 .
~ Continue driving only after the eng ine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out .

If the engine coolant level is cor rect, then the ra­
diator fan may be the cause o f the malfunction .
A WARNING
--If your vehicle should break down for me­
chanica l or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en­
gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded . Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
wo rk in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers

The EDL works together with the ABS. The ABS
war ning light will come on if there is a malfunc ­
tion in the EDL system

At an engine oil temperature above 140 °F
(60 °C) the engine has reached its operating tem­
perature. The engine oil temperature may be
higher if there is heavy engine load and high tem­
peratures outside. This is not a cause for concern
as long as the.

Lap timer
Introduction
You can record and evaluate lap times with the
lap timer in the display
¢page 27, fig. 15. The
time is measured in minutes, seconds and 1/10
seconds. The hou rs are also shown when the lap
time exceeds 60 minutes. The maximum individ­
ual measurement is 99 hours. A maximum of 99 laps may be recorded.

Please devote your full a ttention to driving.
As the driver, you have comp lete responsib ili­
ty for safety in traffic. Only use the functions
in such a way that you always ma inta in com ­
plete control over your vehicle in all traffic sit­
uations .

If timing is paused, you can continue it later even

On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢.ij in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignit ion is switched on and goes out after the en­
g ine starts and the idle has stabilized. Th is ind i­
cates that the MIL is working properly.

If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or i lluminates while you are driving, a
malfunction may exist in the eng ine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged .
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelerations)
and have the condition corrected. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monitored component in your engine system has been as ­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­ ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the l ight illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed

In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release

Your authorized Audi dealer or qua lified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the nec- essary repair . .,,_

Open ing a nd clos ing
¢ .&. in General description on page 30. Do not
reach inside the door handle.
The vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any door. The remote control key cannot be more
than 1.5 m away from the door hand le . It makes
no difference whether the master key is in your
jacket pocket or in your brief case .
I f you grip the door handle while locking, this can
adversely affect the locking function.
It is not possible to re-open the door for a brief
period directly after closi ng it . This allows you to
ensure that the doors are properly locked.

I f your vehicle has been stand ing fo r an ex­
tended period, please note the fol low ing :
- The proxim ity sensors are deactivated after
a few days to save power. You then have to p ull on the door handle once to unlock the
vehicle and a second time to open t he vehi­
cle.
- To prevent the battery from being dis ­
charged and to preserve your vehicle's abili­
ty to start for as long as possible, the ener­
gy management system gradually switches
off unnecessary convenience functions.
It is
possib le that you will not be able to unlock
your vehicle using these convenience func ­
tions .

If you lock the veh icle using the power locking
switch , please note the following:
- If a door is open, the veh icle cannot be locked
using the power lock ing system switch.
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid from
the
outside (increased security, for example
when you are stopped at a red light) .
- The d iodes in the power locking switch illumi­
nate when all the doors are closed and locked .
- You can unlock and open the doors from the in­
side by pulling on the doo r handle .
-If you have a crash and the airbag is activated,
the doors automatically unlock .
A WARNING
- The power locking switch works with the ig­
nition off and automatically locks the entire
vehicle when it is actuated.
- On a vehicle locked from the outside the
power locking system switch is inoperat ive .
- Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency workers to get into the veh icle,
which puts lives at r isk. Do not leave anyone
be hind in the veh icle, especially children .

Seats and storage
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and can
be locked .

The glove compartment can be locked using the

On the right side in the glove compartment is a
holder with the key body into which the emergen­
cy key must be clipped to be able to start the ve­
hicle.
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury in an acci­ dent or sudden stop, always keep the glove
compartment closed while driving.
Additional storage
There are a variety of storage compartments and
fasteners in various places in the vehicle.
- In the roof headliner above the rearview mirror .
- On the back of the front seat. The compart-
ment can hold a maximum weight of 1 kg.
- On the left and right of the luggage compart­
ment, behind the side trim.
- Garment hooks on the pillars in the rear of the
vehicle.

A WARNING , -
- When driving, do not leave any hard objects
on the rear window shelf or allow your pet
to sit on the shelf . They could become a haz­
ard for vehicle occupants in the event of
sudden braking or a crash.
-Always remove objects from the instrument
panel. Any items not stored could slide
around inside the vehicle while driving or
when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when driving around a corner.
- When you are driving make sure that any­
thing you may have placed in the center con­
sole or other storage locations cannot fall
out into the footwells. In case of sudden braking you would not be able to brake or
accelerate .
- Any articles of clothing that you have hung
up must not interfere with the driver's view .
The coat hooks are designed only for light­
weight clothing. Never hang any clothing
with hard, pointed or heavy objects in the pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident -especially if the
airbag is deployed -these objects could in­
jure any passengers inside the vehicle.
- To reduce the risk of personal inju ry in an ac­
cident or sudden stop, always keep the
glove compartment closed while driving.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS
¢ page 146, Important safety instructions
on the side airbag system.
- Hang clothes in such a way that they do not
impair the driver's vision.
- The coat hooks must only be used for light­
weight clothing. Do not leave any heavy or
sharp edged objects in the pockets which
may interfere with the side curtain airbag
deployment and can cause personal injury in
a crash.
- Do not use coat hangers for hanging cloth­
ing on the coat hooks as this can interfere
with proper deployment of the side curtain airbags in an accident.
- Do not hang heavy objects on the coat
hooks, as they could cause personal injury in
a sudden stop .
