Use of any other refrigerant or lubricant willcause severe damage which will result in theneed to replace your vehicle’s entire air con-ditioning system. New regulations in supportof the Australian Government’s Ozone Pro-tection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Man-agement Act 1989 became effective inJanuary 2005. To ensure your vehicle servic-ing and repairs conform with requirements, the air conditioning system should beinspected and maintained by a MITSUBISHIMOTORS Authorised Service Point. The air conditioner should be operated for atleast five minutes each week, even in coldweather. This is to prevent poor lubrication ofthe compressor internal parts and to maintainthe air conditioner in the best operating con-dition.

An air filter has been incorporated into thisair conditioner so that dirt and dust arecleaned from the air.Replace the air filter periodically as its abilityto clean the air will be reduced as it collectspollen and dirt. For the maintenance interval, refer to the “SERVICE BOOKLET”.

7. Start the engine in the vehicle which hasthe booster battery, let the engine idle afew minutes, then start the Plug-in HybridEV system in your vehicle.8. Check that the ready indicator illuminates. If the ready indicator does not illuminate, contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORSAuthorised Service Point.9. When the ready indicator illuminates, dis-connect the jumper cables in the reverseorder of connection.

WA R N I N G zDo not open the bonnet while steam iscoming from the engine compartment. Itcould cause steam or hot water to spurtout, causing burns. Hot water could spurtout even when there is no steam comingout, and some parts will be very hot. Bevery careful when opening the bonnet. zBe careful of hot steam, which could beblowing off the reserve tank cap. zDo not attempt to remove the radiator capwhile the engine is hot.

The salt and other chemicals spread on theroads in some areas in winter can have aharmful effect on the vehicle body. Youshould therefore wash the vehicle as often aspossible in accordance with our care-instruc-tions. It is recommended to have a preserva-tive applied and the underfloor protectionchecked before and after the cold weatherseason. After washing your vehicle, wipe off allwaterdrops from the rubber parts around thedoors to prevent the doors from freezing.

Engine oil
Maintenance 11-5
11
E01000404039
The engine oil used has a significant effect onthe engine’s performance, service life andstartability. Be sure to use oil of the recom-mended quality and appropriate viscosity. All engines consume a certain amount of oilduring normal operation. Therefore, it isimportant to check the oil level at regularintervals or before starting a long trip.1. Park the car on a horizontal surface.2. Switch off the engine.3. Wait a few minutes.4. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with aclean cloth.5. Reinsert the dipstick as far as it goes.
6. Remove the dipstick and read the oillevel, which should always be within therange indicated7. If the oil level is below the specified limit, remove the cap located on the cylinderhead cover and add enough oil to raise thelevel to within the specified range. Do notoverfill to avoid engine damage. Be sureto use the specified engine oil and do notmix various types of oil.8. After adding oil, close the cap securely.9. Confirm the oil level by repeating step 4to 6.
zSelect engine oil of the proper SAE vis-cosity number according to the atmos-pheric temperature.SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 5W-40engine oils can only be used if they meetACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or A5/B5 and APISG (or higher) specifications. zUse engine oil conforming to the follow-ing classification:•API classification: “For service SG” orhigher•ILSAC certificated oil•ACEA classification:“For service A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, orA5/B5”

Engine coolant/Plug-in hybrid EV system coolant11-6 Maintenance

E01000503105
A transparent engine coolant reserve tank (A)and EV cooling system reserve tank (B) islocated in the engine compartment. The coolant level in this tank should be keptbetween the “LOW” and “FULL” markswhen measured while the engine and theplug-in hybrid EV system are cold.
The cooling system is a closed system andnormally the loss of coolant should be veryslight. A noticeable drop in the coolant levelcould indicate leakage. If this occurs, we rec-ommend you to have the system checked assoon as possible.
If the level should drop below the “LOW”level on the reserve tank, open the lid and addcoolant. Also, if the reserve tank is completely empty, remove the radiator cap (C) or the reservetank cap (D) and add coolant until the levelreaches the filler neck. The engine coolant and the plug-in hybrid EVsystem coolant contains an ethylene glycolanti-corrosion agent. Some parts of theengine and the plug-in hybrid EV system arecast aluminium alloy, and periodic changingof the engine coolant and the plug-in hybridEV system coolant are necessary to preventcorrosion of these parts.
NOTE
zUse of additives is
not recommended since
they may reduce the effectiveness of addi-tives already included in the engine oil. Itmay result in failure of the mechanicalassembly.
