 Outside air {Indicator light (A) OFF} Outside air is introduced into the passen- ger compartment.  Recirculated air {Indicator light (A) ON} Air is recirculated inside the passenger compartment.
When the air conditioning turns on, the air selection is controlled automatically. Whenthe air conditioning turns off, the air selection automatically goes back to the outside air position.If high cooling performance is desired, or if the outside air is dusty or contaminated in some way, use the recirculation position.Switch to the outside air position every now and then to keep th

You can change the following functions tomatch your preference.  Enable automatic air control: When the mode selection dial or the blower speed selection dial is set to the “AUTO” position, the air selection switchwill also be automatically controlled.  Disable automatic air control: Even when the mode selection dial or theblower speed selection dial is set to the “AUTO” position, the air selection switch will not be automatically controlled. Changing the settings: Press the air selection switch for about 10 seconds or longer.When the setting has changed, the system will beep and the indicator light will flash. • When the setting has changed fromenabled to disabled, the system will beep three times and the indicator will flash three times.
• When the setting has changed from dis- abled to enabled, the system will beep two times and the indicator light will flash three times.

Push the switch, and the air conditioningcompressor will turn on. The air conditioning indicator light (A) will come on. A sound will be made every time you pushthe switch.
CAUTION Using recirculated air for a long time may cause the windows to fog up.
Personalizing the air selection (Changing the function setting)

NOTE
 The factory setting is “Enable automatic air control”.  While the mode selection dial is set to the “ ” position, the air selection will auto- matically change to the outside air position,even if the system is set to “Disable auto- matic air control”, in order to prevent win- dows from fogging up.

1. Park the vehicle in the shade wheneverpossible. Parking in the hot sun makes thevehicle interior extremely hot which thenrequires more time to cool. If it is neces- sary to park in the sun, open the windows for the first few minutes of air condition-ing to expel the hot air. 2. Afterwards, keep the windows closed when the air conditioning is in use. Theentry of outside air through open windows will reduce cooling efficiency.
3. When running the air conditioning, make sure the air intake, which is located in front of the windshield, is free of obstruc- tions such as leaves. Leaves collected inthe air-intake chamber may reduce air flow and plug the water drains.
If the air conditioning seems less effective than usual, the cause might be a refrigerantleak. Have the system inspected by your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facilityof your choice.
NOTE
 While the mode selection dial is set to the “ ” position, the air conditioning com- pressor will run automatically. The outside air position will also be selected automati-cally.  While the “ ” position is selected, you cannot turn the air conditioning off or selectthe recirculation position. This prevents the windows from fogging up.  To defog quickly, direct
the air flow from the
side vents toward the door windows.  When defrosting, do not set the temperature control dial to the maximum cool position. This will blow cool air on the window glass and fog it up.

4. Make sure your battery electrolyte is at the proper level. (Refer to “Checking bat- tery electrolyte level” on page 9-15.) 5. For vehicles equipped with turbocharger, remove the air duct and then the battery upper cover.(Refer to “Removing and installing the battery upper cover” on page 9-14.)
6. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery (A), and the other end to the posi- tive (+) terminal of the booster battery(B).
7. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery (B), and the other end to the engine block of the vehicle with the lowbattery (A) at the point farthest from the battery.
WA R N I N G If the electrolyte fluid is not visible, or looks frozen, DO NOT ATTEMPT JUMP STARTING!! The battery might split open or explode if the temperature is below the freezing point or if it is not filled to the properlevel.
NOTE
 Open the terminal cover before connecting the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery. (Refer to “Disconnection and connection” on page 9-16.)  Use the proper cables suitable for the battery size. Otherwise heat damage to the cables couldresult.  Check the jumper cables for damage and cor- rosion before use.
WA R N I N G Be sure to follow the proper order when connecting the batteries, of: 

Make sure that the connection is made to the engine properly. If the connection isdirectly made to the negative side of the battery, the flammable gases from inside the battery might catch fire and explode, causing personal injury.  When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect the positive (+) cable to the nega- tive (-) terminal. Otherwise sparks canmake the battery explode.CAUTION Make sure that the jumper cable will not be caught in the cooling fan or other movingparts in the engine compartment.

8. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min- utes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the low battery. 9. After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in the reverse order from the wayyou connected them.
10. For vehicles equipped with turbocharger,
install the battery upper cover and thenthe air duct. (Refer to “Removing and installing the battery upper cover” on page 9-14.)
If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the engine has been started by using jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking systemwarning light to blink on and off. This is only due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap-pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the informa- tion screen in the multi-information displaywill be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” will blink. If this happens: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment.3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.

 If the engine is started with the air duct removed, the noise produced as air is drawn into the engine will be greater than when the duct is installed.WA R N I N G Charging your battery while it is still in your vehicle might cause the battery tocatch fire and explode. If you have to charge it while in the vehicle, disconnect the negative terminal.  Keep sparks, cigarettes and flames away from the battery because the battery may explode. Keep your work area well vented when charging or using the battery in an enclosed space.
 Remove all the caps before charging the battery.  Electrolyte (battery acid) is corrosive diluted sulphuric acid. If electrolyte comesin contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. If electrolytegets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

The coolant reserve tank (A) lets you quicklysee when you need to add coolant. When theengine is cold, the level in the reserve tank should be between the “FULL” and “LOW” marks. The radiator usually stays full so thereis no reason to remove the radiator cap (B) except when you check the coolant freeze point or replace the antifreeze coolant.

The radiator cap must be tight sealed to pre- vent losing coolant which may result in engine damage. Only use a Genuine Mitsubi-shi Parts radiator cap, or an approved equiva- lent.  Do not overfill the reserve tank.
 Your vehicle uses a special radiator cap that stays sealed and lets the coolant flow from the reserve tank back to the radiator when the engine cools down. If you needto change the cap, use the exact same kind.  Check the coolant freeze point in the radi- ator with the proper gauge, and only when it is safe. If you add antifreeze, the con- tents of the reserve tank must be protectedagainst freezing.  Keep the front of the radiator and con- denser clean.  If the temperature of the engine coolant does not rise after th
e engine is warmed-
up, take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice to have the thermostat checked, and replaced if necessary.

from use and not filter properly. Replace it with a new filter using the schedule in the“WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”.
1. Remove the two clips (A), then remove the duct (B).
 Do not use water to adjust the concentration of coolant. Do not top off the tank with plain water only. Water by itself boils at a lower temperatureand does not stop rust
or freezing. If the
water freezes, it will damage your cooling system. Do not use tapwater. It can causecorrosion and rust.
Radiator cap
WA R N I N G Wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. Otherwise hotsteam or boiling coolant could spray up from the radiator and scald you.

1. Install the battery upper cover (A) onto the battery, and then push the plastic nuts (B) in the direction shown by the arrows to secure the cover. 2. To install the air duct, perform the removal steps in reverse.

The electrolyte level must be between thelimits shown on the outside of the battery. Fill it with distilled water as needed. The inside ofthe battery is divided into several compart- ments. Take the cap off of each compartment and fill to the mark.Do not fill above the top line because a spill during driving could cause damage.
NOTE
 Be careful not to lose the removed plastic nuts.
To install

 Be sure to install the plastic nuts in the cor- rect direction.  Make sure that the battery upper cover is installed securely.

Checking battery electrolyte level
WA R N I N G If the battery goes flat, be sure to check the battery electrolyte level before con- necting booster cables. After checking the battery electrolyte level, make sure the caps are fittedsecurely. If any of the caps has a loose fit, replace the battery.
