There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine.The starter should not be run for more than 15seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Insert the ignition key. 3. A limited-slip differential is applied for front wheel differential. The features of this lim- ited-slip differential are described below: Just as with a conventional differential, the wheel on one side is allowed to turn at a dif-ferent speed from the wheel on the other side when the vehicle is cornering. The difference between the limited-slip differential and aconventional differential is that if the wheel on one side of the vehicle loses traction, a greater amount of torque is applied to thewheel on the other side to improve traction.

Limited-slip differential

Even if there is a difference in the amount of traction the wheels can get, if both of them are spinning, the limited-slip differential will not be effective.CAUTION Never start the engine while one of the front or rear wheels is jacked up and the other in contact with the ground; doing so may cause the vehicle to jump forward. Continuously attempting to extract the vehi- cle from snow, mud, etc. while using highengine rpm may damage the limited-slip dif- ferential. Using a compact spare wheel will adversely affect the limited-slip differential; replace the compact spare wheel with a standard sizewheel as soon as possible.
Service brake Brake pedal
WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the full pedal stroke that would be necessary in an emergency. Make sure that the pedal canbe operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This practice can result in very high brake temperatures, pre-mature pad wear, and possible damage to the brakes.

If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder and turn on the hazardwarning flashers. If there is no shoulder, or the shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly, with the hazard lights flashing, untilyou come to a safe stopping place. Keep the flashers flashing. If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering and brakes, making these difficult to use. The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not grip well. The brake pedalwill be harder to press than usual. Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel will be hard to turn.

If the engine cannot be started because the battery is weak or dead, you can start it withthe battery from another vehicle using jumper cables.
1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets that might make an accidental electrical contact. 2. Position the vehicles close enoughtogether so that the jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles aren’t touching each other. 3. You could be injured if the vehicles move. Set the parking brake firmly on each vehi- cle. Put an automatic transaxle, Twin Clutch SST or CVT in “P” (PARK) or amanual transaxle in “N” (Neutral). Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” posi- tion.

4. Remove the joint terminal cover (A). 5. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the joint termi-nal, and the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery.
6. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to the engineblock of the vehicle with the low battery.
7. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min- utes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the low battery.8. After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in the reverse order from the way you connected them.

If the connection is directly made to the negative side of the battery, the flammable gases from insidethe battery might catch fire and explode, causing personal injury. Otherwise sparks canmake the battery explode.CAUTION Make sure that the jumper cable will not be caught in the cooling fans or other movingparts in the engine compartment.NOTE
WA R N I N G Be sure to have an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer charge the battery. Do not charge the battery yourself. Flammable gases may leak from the bat-tery and explode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is corrosive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolyte comes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle,thoroughly flush with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and getprompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren. Never remove the battery label, upper cover, exhaust tube, or pipe. Flammable gases may leak and explode.

If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning light to blink on and off. This is onlydue to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap- pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the informa-tion screen in the multi-information display will be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” will blink. If this happens:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the enginecompartment. 3. Check that the cooling fans is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engineimmediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.
5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolant temperature warning display on the multi-information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, you can start driving again. If the bar graphstays in the red zone, turn off the engine. 6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the reserve tank. Ifthere is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant.
This vehicle is equipped with a mainte- nance-free battery located in the trunk. To assure proper battery installation and venting of flammable gases, the battery must be serviced and/or replaced by anauthorized Mitsubishi dealer only.
