The theft-alarm system is designed to provide protection from unauthorized entry into thevehicle. This system is operated in three stages: the first is the “armed” stage, the sec- ond is the “alarm” stage, and third is the “dis-armed” stage. If triggered, the system provides both audible and visual alarm sig- nals. Park the vehicle and stop the engine. Arm the system as described below. 1. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position. Also, if a key was used to start the engine, remove the key from the ignition switch. 2. Make sure that the trunk lid and enginehood are closed.
3. Lock all doors by either the keyless entry system or the F.A.S.T.-key operation. At this time, the theft-alarm indicator (A) on the audio panel flashes for confirma- tion.
4. The system has entered the armed stage after about 20 seconds, when the theft- alarm indicator (A) flashing becomes slower. The theft-alarm indicator (A) continues to flash while the system is in the armed stage.

NOTE
If the engine hood or the trunk lid is open, the theft-alarm indicator (A) illuminates andthe system cannot enter the armed stage. The system enters the armed stage about 20 sec- onds after the engine hood or the trunk lid isclosed. The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator (A) is illuminated, all doors are unlocked by the keyless entry sys- tem, the F.A.S.T.-key operation. The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator is illuminated, the igni-tion switch is turned to the “ON” position. The system will not be
armed if a door or the
trunk lid or the engine hood is not com- pletely closed. If this happens, rearm the sys- tem as described above. The theft-alarm system can be activated when people are riding inside the vehicle or when the windows are open. To prevent acci- dental activation of the alarm, do not set thesystem to the system armed mode while peo- ple are riding in the vehicle.

Engine overheating 8-4 For emergencies

If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning light to blink on and off. This is onlydue to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap- pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.
N00836500033
When the engine is overheating, the informa-tion screen in the multi-information display will be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” will blink. If this happens:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the enginecompartment. 3. Check that the cooling fans is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engineimmediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.
5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolant temperature warning display on the multi-information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, you can start driving again. If the bar graphstays in the red zone, turn off the engine. 6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the reserve tank. Ifthere is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant.
This vehicle is equipped with a mainte- nance-free battery located in the trunk. To assure proper battery installation and venting of flammable gases, the battery must be serviced and/or replaced by anauthorized Mitsubishi dealer only.

To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage: Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in “Fuel selec- tion”. Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter. Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.
Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic tests. Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning. To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning off the igni- tion switch. Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or the engine has a malfunction. If you are not able to stop driving immediately, slowdown and drive for only a short time. Have an inspection made by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as soon as possible. In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalytic converter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice for service.
N00937500510
Use the engine hood release lever (locatedunder the instrument panel near the driver’sdoor) to unlock the engine hood.
CAUTION Damage to the catalytic converter can result if your vehicle is not kept in proper operating condition. If the engine malfunctions or mis- fires, or if your vehicle performance suffers, have it serviced promptly. Running yourvehicle when it is overheated may result in damage to the converter and vehicle.WA R N I N G Do not park or run your vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur. Do not put undercoat paint on the cata- lytic converter.
Engine hood
CAUTION To avoid the risk of being burned, do not touch the air outlets (A) and air scoop (B) on the engine hood when the engine compart- ment is hot (when the engine is running orimmediately after the vehicle has been driven).

Pull the lever toward you to release the engine hood latch.
Release the safety lever and lift the engine hood.
Support the engine hood with the hood prop. Insert the hood prop securely in the opening under the hood marked with an arrow.
WA R N I N G Never use the release lever to unlatch the engine hood while the vehicle is in motion. Do not drive your vehicle unless the engine hood is locked.
NOTE
To prevent damage to the engine hood and wipers, make sure the wipers are at restingposition when you open the engine hood.
CAUTION Always insert the support prop into the hole specially made for it. Propping the enginehood at any other place could cause the prop to slip out and lead to an accident. The hood prop can fall out if the hood is lifted by a strong wind.
