If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder and turn on the hazardwarning flashers. If there is no shoulder, or the shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly, with the hazard lights flashing, untilyou come to a safe stopping place. Keep the flashers flashing. If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering and brakes, making these difficult to use.  The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not grip well. The brake pedalwill be harder to press than usual.  Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel will be hard to turn.

If the engine cannot be started because the battery is weak or dead, you can start it withthe battery from another vehicle using jumper cables.
1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets that might make an accidental electrical contact. 2. Position the vehicles close enoughtogether so that the jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles aren’t touching each other. 3. You could be injured if the vehicles move. Set the parking brake firmly on each vehi- cle. Put an automatic transaxle, Twin Clutch SST or CVT in “P” (PARK) or amanual transaxle in “N” (Neutral). Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” posi- tion.

Jump-starting the engine

4. Remove the joint terminal cover (A). 5. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the joint termi-nal, and the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery.
6. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to the engineblock of the vehicle with the low battery.
7. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min- utes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the low battery.8. After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in the reverse order from the way you connected them.

Make sure that the connection is made to the engine properly. If the connection is directly made to the negative side of the battery, the flammable gases from insidethe battery might catch fire and explode, causing personal injury.  When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect the positive (+) cable to the nega- tive (-) terminal. Otherwise sparks canmake the battery explode.CAUTION Make sure that the jumper cable will not be caught in the cooling fans or other movingparts in the engine compartment.NOTE

Flammable gases may leak from the bat-tery and explode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is corrosive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolyte comes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle,thoroughly flush with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and getprompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren. Never remove the battery label, upper cover, exhaust tube, or pipe. If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning light to blink on and off. This is onlydue to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap- pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the informa-tion screen in the multi-information display will be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” will blink. If this happens:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the enginecompartment. 3. Check that the cooling fans is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engineimmediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.
5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolant temperature warning display on the multi-information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, you can start driving again. If the bar graphstays in the red zone, turn off the engine. 6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the reserve tank. Ifthere is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant.
 This vehicle is equipped with a mainte- nance-free battery located in the trunk. To assure proper battery installation and venting of flammable gases, the battery must be serviced and/or replaced by anauthorized Mitsubishi dealer only.

The catalytic converter requires you to useunleaded fuel only. Leaded gasoline will destroy the emission-control effectiveness of the converter. Normally, the catalytic converter does not require maintenance. However, it is important to keep the engine properly tuned for the con- verter to continue to work properly.
Service precautions
WA R N I N G When checking or servicing the inside of the engine compartment, be sure theengine is stopped and has had a chance to cool down.  If you need to work in the engine compart- ment with the engine running, be espe-cially careful that your clothing, hair, etc. does not get caught in
the fan, drive belts,
or other moving parts.
 The fan can turn on automatically even if the engine is not running. Turn the igni- tion switch to the “LOCK” position to be safe while you work in the engine com- partment. Do not smoke or allow open flames around fuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma-ble.  Be extremely careful when working around the battery. It contains poisonous and corrosive sulfuric acid.  Do not get under your vehicle while it is on a jack. Always use properly rated automotivejack stands.  Handling your vehicle’s parts and materi- als in the wrong way can injure you. To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in “Fuel selec- tion”.  Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.  Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.
 Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic tests.  Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning.  To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning off the igni- tion switch.  Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or the engine has a malfunction. If you are not able to stop driving immediately, slowdown and drive for only a short time. Have an inspection made by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as soon as possible.  In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalytic converter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice for service.

The battery is weaker in cold temperatures. This has to do with its chemical and physical properties and is why a very cold battery,especially one with a low charge, will have a hard time starting your vehicle. It is important to familiarize yourself with the following terms:  Cold tire pressure: • The measured pressure after the vehiclehas been parked for at least three hours, or • The measured pressure when the vehicleis driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after having been parked for three hours.
 Maximum inflation pressure: the maxi- mum permissible cold tire inflation pres- sure for this tire.
Disconnection and connection
WA R N I N G Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running, or you could damage the vehicle’s electrical parts.  Never short-circuit the battery. This could cause it to overheat and be damaged.  Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames away from the battery because the battery could explode.  Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills onnearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis- color them. And if gets on your skin or in your eyes, it can cause burns or blindness. Please observe the following handling instructions:
• If electrolyte gets on plastic parts or other nearby parts, wipe it off with a soft cloth or chamois soaked in a solution of water and neutral detergent then imme- diately rinse the affected parts withplenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them with water immediately and get immedi-ate medical attention.
 Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working with the battery, or have a skilled automobile technician do it.  This vehicle is equipped with a mainte- nance-free battery located in the trunk. WA R N I N G Driving with tires that are worn, damaged or improperly inflated is dangerous. These type tire conditions will adversely affect vehicle performance.These type tire conditions can also cause a tread separation or blowout which may result in an accident causing seriousinjury or death. Tires, including spare tire, degrade over time with age even when they are not being used. It is recommended that tires over 6 years generally be replaced even ifdamage is not obvious.
