mode
General notes In automatic mode, the set temperature is
maintained automatically at a constant level. The system automatically regulates the tem-
perature of the dispensed air, the airflow and
the air distribution.
The automatic mode functions optimally
when the "Cooling with air dehumidification"
function is activated. If desired, cooling with
air dehumidification can be deactivated.
If you deactivate the "Cooling with air-dehu-
midification" function, the air inside the vehi-
cle will not be cooled. The air inside the vehi- cle will also not be dehumidified. The win-
dows can mist up more quickly. Therefore,
only switch off cooling with air dehumidifica-
tion for a short period. Setting climate control to automatic
mode X
Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock (Y page 159).
X Set the desired temperature using the
w rocker switch on the front control
unit.

lower section of the Krocker switch.

nisation function
Climate control can be set centrally using the synchronisation function. The settings for
temperature, air distribution and airflow on
the driver's side are adopted for the front-
passenger side.
X To activate/deactivate: switch the syn-
chronisation function on or off using
COMAND Online (see the separate operat- ing instructions).
The synchronisation function switches off, if
the settings for the front-passenger side are
changed. Demisting the windscreen
You can use this function to defrost the wind-
screen or to demist the inside of the wind-
screen and the front side windows.
Switch off the windscreen demisting function
as soon as the windscreen is clear again.
X Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock (Y page 159).
X To activate: press the¬rocker switch
on the front control unit up or down.
The indicator lamp in the ¬rocker
switch lights up.
The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
R high airflow
R high temperature
R air distribution to the windscreen and
front side windows
R air-recirculation mode off
R windscreen heating on
X To deactivate: press the¬rocker
switch up or down.
The indicator lamp in the ¬rocker
switch goes out. The previous settings are
reactivated. Air-recirculation mode
remains deactivated.

i If you clean the windows regularly, they
do not mist up so quickly. Rear window heating
General notes The rear window heating has a high current
draw. You should therefore switch it off as
soon as the window is clear. It otherwise
switches off automatically after several
minutes.
If the battery voltage is too low, the rear win-
dow heating may switch off.
Activating/deactivating X
Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock (Y page 159).
X Press the ¤rocker switch up or down.

matically.

If you open the side windows manually after closing them with the convenience closing
feature, they will remain in this position
when opened using the convenience open-
ing feature.
If parts of the body are in the closing area
during convenience closing, proceed as fol-
lows:
X Press the Wbutton for opening/closing
the side windows.
The side windows stop.
X To then open the side window, press the
W button again.
Observe the notes on the automatic reversing
feature for the side windows (Y page 99).
X Convenience opening feature: press and
hold the grocker switch up or down
until the side windows start to open auto-
matically.
The indicator lamp in rocker switch g
goes out. Air-recirculation mode is deacti-
vated. Activating/deactivating the residual
heat function
General notes Once the engine is switched off, it is possible
to make use of the residual heat of the engine to continue heating or ventilating the front
compartment of the vehicle for approximately
30 minutes.
The heating or ventilation time depends on
the temperature that has been set. Activating/deactivating X

The blower will run at a low speed regardless of the airflow setting.
If you activate the residual heat function at
high temperatures, only the ventilation will be
activated. The blower runs at medium speed.

Residual heat is deactivated automatically:
R after approximately 30 minutes
R when the ignition is switched on
R if the battery voltage drops
R when the auxiliary heating is switched on Perfume atomizer
Operating the perfume atomizer G
WARNING
If children open the perfume vial, they could
drink the perfume or it could come into con-
tact with their eyes. There is a risk of injury. Do not leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. 146

Problems with the perfume atomizer

activated. The perfume vial has not been pushed into the holder as far as it
will go.
X Slide the perfume vial into the holder as far as it will go. The perfume vial is not adequately filled.
X Pre-filled vials: dispose of the empty vial.
X Use a new pre-filled vial.
X Refillable vials: refill the vial with a maximum of 15 ml of the
same perfume. The perfume atomizer is faulty.
X Have the perfume atomizer checked at a qualified specialist
workshop. Ionisation
You can use the ionisation function to purify
the air in the vehicle interior and attain an
improved interior climate.
The ionisation of the interior air is odourless
and cannot, directly, be perceived in the vehi-
cle interior.
You can switch ionisation on and off using
COMAND Online (see the separate operating instructions).
Ionisation can only be switched on if the front
automatic climate control is activated. The
side air vent on the driver's side must be
open. Auxiliary heating
Important safety notes G
DANGER
If the exhaust pipe is blocked or sufficient
ventilation is not possible, toxic exhaust
fumes can enter the vehicle, especially car-
bon monoxide. This is the case, e.g. in
enclosed spaces, or if the vehicle is stuck in
snow. There is a risk of fatal injuries. You should switch off the auxiliary heating in
enclosed spaces which do not have an extrac-
tion system, e.g. a garage. If the vehicle is
stuck in snow and you must leave the auxiliary
heating running, keep the exhaust pipe and
the area around the vehicle clear of snow. To guarantee a sufficient supply of fresh air, open
a window on the side of the vehicle away from the wind. G
WARNING
When the auxiliary heating is switched on,
parts of the vehicle can become very hot.
Flammable materials such as leaves, grass or twigs may ignite if they come into contact
with:
R hot parts of the exhaust system
R the exhaust gas itself
There is a risk of fire. 148

When the auxiliary heating is switched on,
make sure that:
R no flammable materials come into contact
with hot vehicle components
R the exhaust gas can escape from the
exhaust pipe unhindered
R the exhaust gas does not come into contact
with flammable materials.
The auxiliary heating and the exhaust gas out-
let are situated behind the right-hand front
wheel.
! Operating the auxiliary heating/ventila-
tion draws on the vehicle battery. After you
have heated or ventilated the vehicle a
maximum of two times, drive for a longer
distance.
Switch the auxiliary heating on regularly once
a month for about ten minutes.
The auxiliary heating heats the air in the vehi-
cle interior to the set temperature. This
occurs without using the heat of the running
engine. The auxiliary heating is operated
directly using the vehicle's fuel. For this rea-
son, the tank content must be at least at
reserve fuel level to ensure that the auxiliary
heating functions.
The auxiliary heating/ventilation automati-
cally adjusts to changes in temperature and
weather conditions. For this reason, the aux- iliary heating could switch from ventilation
mode to heating mode or from heating mode to ventilation mode.
The auxiliary heating switches off when the
engine is switched off. The auxiliary ventila-
tion switches off when you turn the key to key
position 2(Y page 159).
The auxiliary heating switches off automati-
cally after 30 minutes. This time limit can be
altered. To do this, visit a qualified specialist
workshop.
You cannot use the auxiliary ventilation to
cool the vehicle interior to a temperature
lower than the outside temperature. Before switching on X

X Set the desired temperature using the
w rocker switch on the front control unit
or using COMAND Online (see the separate operating instructions).
If you do not alter the temperature before
switching on the auxiliary heating, the last
temperature setting will be adopted.
Auxiliary heating or ventilation can also be
switched on if the manually set climate con-
trol is activated. Optimum comfort can be
attained when the system is set to automatic
mode. Set the temperature to 22 †.
You can activate or deactivate the auxiliary
heating/ventilation:
R using the rocker switch on the centre con-
sole (Y page 149)
R using the remote control (Y page 150)
The on-board computer can be used to spec- ify up to three departure times, one of which
may be preselected:
R using the remote control (Y page 150)
R using COMAND Online (see the separate
operating instructions)
Switching the auxiliary heating/venti-
lation on/off using the centre console
rocker switch The colours of the indicator lamps on the
rocker switch have the following meanings:
Blue Auxiliary ventilation switched on
Red Auxiliary heating switched on

To switch the auxiliary heating/ventila-
tion on: press rocker switch :up or down.
The red or the blue indicator lamp in rocker
switch :lights up.
X To set the temperature: switch on auxili-
ary heating/ventilation.
COMAND Online is activated for approx-
imately one minute.
X Set the desired temperature using
COMAND Online (see the separate operat-
ing instructions).
In addition you can adjust the temperature at any time using COMAND Online if the auxili-
ary heating/ventilation is switched on. To do
so, call up COMAND Online using the qbut-
ton on the centre console.
X To switch the auxiliary heating/ventila-
tion off: press rocker switch :up or
down.
The red or the blue indicator lamp in rocker
switch :goes out.
Switching the auxiliary heating/venti-
lation on/off using the remote control General notes
Your vehicle comes with one remote control.
You may use two additional remote controls
for your vehicle. For more information, please contact a qualified specialist workshop.
Store the remote control for the auxiliary
heating so that the auxiliary heating cannot
be switched on unintentionally. In particular,
ensure that the remote control for the auxili- ary heating is kept out of the reach of chil-
dren.
The remote control has a range of approx-
imately 300 metres. This range is reduced by:
R sources of radio interference
R solid objects between the remote control
and the vehicle
R the remote control being in an unfavoura-
ble position in relation to the vehicle
R transmitting from an enclosed space
i The optimum range can be achieved if you
hold the remote control vertically, pointing
upwards when you press one of the but-
tons.
If the remote control battery is low, the bat-
tery symbol on the left of the display is shown as empty. Replace the remote control battery and observe the important safety notes when
doing so (Y page 152).

Setting the departure time
Make sure that the time set in the vehicle is
correct before setting the departure time; see Digital Owner's Manual. Otherwise, the aux-
iliary heating may switch on at the wrong time
and at an unsuitable location. When setting
the departure time, also observe the impor-
tant safety notes (Y page 148).
