Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coo la nt gauge ¢ page 10 , fig. 3@
only works when the ign ition is on. To prevent
damage to your e ngine, please note the fo l­
l owing important points:
Engine cold
As long as the nee dle rem ains a t the left end
of the gauge, the engine s till h as not reac hed
its operating temperat ure. Avoid high engine
speeds, heavy engine loads and heavy throt­
tle.
Normal temperature
W hen the engine has re ache d its ope rat ing
temperature, the need le w ill move into the
mid dle of t he gauge and rema in there .
If the
engine is working hard at high outside tem ­
peratures, the needle may turn fu rther to the
right. This is no cause for concern as long as
the . warni ng light in the inst rument cl uster
does not illuminate .
When the. war ning light starts to flash,
th is can mean one of two thi ngs: either the
coolant
temperature is too high, o r the coo l­
ant
level is too low ¢ page 17 .

- The front spoiler has been designed to
properly d istribute the cooling a ir when
the vehicle is movi ng. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the coo ling
e ff ect a nd th e eng ine could then ove r­

-Do not reset the display between oil
changes, otherw ise the display will be in­

- The information in the Service Reminder

Lap timer

On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (M IL) Iii in
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD
II) system.
The warning/indicator ligh t illuminates whe n
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the eng ine starts and the idle has stabilized.
This indicates that the MIL is working proper­
ly .
If the light does not go out after t he engine
is started, or illuminates while you are driv­
i ng, a malfunction may exist in the eng ine sys­
tem. If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged .
Contin ue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
i ng sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erations) and have the cond ition corrected.
Contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler.
If the light il luminates, the electronic speed
limiter may also be malfunct ioning. For more
information
c:> page 31, Electronic speed
limiter.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate
c:> page 163.
On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission contro l system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a mal­
funct ion, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys·
tem. If the light illuminates after a refuelling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed
c:> page 163.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can on ly be displayed using spe­
c ial dia gnost ic equipment (generic scan tool
furOBD) .

- The operation of the remote cont ro l key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmitters in the vicin ity of
the vehicle work ing in the same frequen­
cy range (e.g. a cell phone, radio equip­ ment) .
- In order to make sure the locking func­
tion is working, you should always keep
your eye on the vehicle to make sure it is
properly locked .
- Do not use the remote control if you are
i nside the car, otherwise you may unin­
tentionally lock the vehicle, and then you
would set off the anti-theft ala rm when
you try to start the engine or open a
door . In case this happens anyhow, push
the un lock button
CD .
- Use the panic function only if you are in
an emergency situation.
Resetting the remote control
The remote control must be reset if the vehi­
cle does not unlock .
.,,. Press the unlock button CD on the remote
control.
.,,. Manua lly unlock the driver's door lock with
the mechanical key within 30 seconds.

Operating locks with the key
To lock and unlock the vehicle from the out­

Locking and unlocking the vehicle from
inside
The vehicle can be locked or unlocked from
the inside using the power locking switch .

If you lock the veh icle using the power locking
switch , please note the following:
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid
from the
outside ( increased security, for ex ­
ample when you are stopped at a red light).
- You can unlock and open the doors from the
inside by pulling on the door handle .
-If the driver's door is opened (after you have
locked the vehicle from the inside using the
power locking switch), the door will remain
unlocked to prevent you from locking your­
self out of you r vehicle. After you close the
door, you have to lock the driver 's door
aga in.
- If you have a crash and the airbag is activat-
ed, the doo rs automatically unlock. ..,.

When will the anti theft ala rm system be
triggered?
When the vehicle is locked , the alarm system
monitors and protects the following parts of
the vehicle:
- engine compartment
- luggage compartment
- doo rs
- ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will
be triggered if one of the doors, the engine
hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the ign i­
tion is turned on.
The anti-theft alarm system will also go off
when the battery is disconnected.
You can a lso trigger the alarm by pressing the
PANIC button on your remote-control key.
This will alert other people in case of emer­
gency. Press the
PANIC button again to turn
off the alarm .
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off
when triggered?
The alarm system is switched off when you
unlock the vehicle using the remote-control key or when the ignition is sw itched on . The
a larm will also switch itse lf off when it comes
to the end of its cycle.
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher will blink briefly when
the doors, engine hood and rear lid are prop­
erly closed.
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check
the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make
sure they are properly closed. If you close a
door, the hood or the rear lid with the ant i­
theft alarm switched on, the emergency flash­
ers will blink only after you have closed the
door or lid.
(1) Tips
For the anti-theft alarm system to func­
tion properly, make sure all vehicle doors
and windows are closed before leaving the
vehicle.

@ For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
vehicle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after start ing your
veh icle. Mainta in moderate speed until the
engine is completely warm . Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature .
Stopping the engine
.,. Turn the ignition key to position @

_& WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injur ies.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the eng ine and removed the
ignition key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment .
(D Note
Do not stop the engine immediately after
hard or extended driving. Keep the engine
r un ning for approximately two minutes to
prevent excessive heat build-up.

ter you have driven for longer than 3 seconds
and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h) .
The parking brake warning light_
(USA)/ . (CON) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set and you switch on the ignition .
A WARNING
Always re lease the park ing brake com -
pletely. A partially engaged brake will
overheat the rear brakes, reduce their ef­
fectiveness and cause excessive wear. This
could lead to brake failure and an accident. .,.

lever in P. Th is way, you do not overload the
pawl mechanism and it is easier to move the
selector lever out of P .
A WARNING
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear . If you must leave
your veh icle w ith the engine r unning, set
the park ing brake and engage the park
lock .
- When the engine is running and the transmiss ion is in gear (D, Sor R) or in
"t iptronic" mode, it is essential that you
stop the vehicle with the footbrake.
When idling, the transmission of power does not stop comp letely -the vehicle
"creeps".
- Do not accelerate when you change the
selector lever position w it h the vehicle
stationary and the engine runn ing -risk
of an acc ident!
- Never p lace the selector lever in the R or
N pos ition wh ile the vehicle is mov ing -
risk of an acc ident!
- If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop
while on an incline, keep the foot brake depressed all the way down so that the
veh icle does not start to rol l backward.
You shou ld never ho ld the vehicle using
the clutch if you are going to be s topped
on an incline. If you do, the cl utch w ill
start to slip when it overheats ca used by
the constant overload. This is dangerous

Homelink
Universal remote
control
General information
The HomeLink universal remote control can
be programmed with hand-held transmitters
from existing equipment.
You must first program the Homelink trans­
mitter before you can use the system
~ page 89, Programming the HomeLink
transmitter.
In order to program the Homelink transmit­
ter for devices utilizing rolling code, a second
person on a ladder who can safely reach the
garage door opener motor is recommended.
It is also necessary to locate the "learn" but­
ton on your garage door opener motor . Refer
to the operating instructions for the opener, as the location and color of this button may
vary by manufacturer .
You can still use the origina l remote control
for the device at any time.
A WARNING
-
- Never use the Homelink transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea­
ture as requ ired by federal safety stand­
ards. This includes any garage door open­
er model manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards. Using a garage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious injury or death.
- For safety reasons never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle.
- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the Homelink remote control is being pro­
grammed. If the device is repeatedly ac-

tivated, this can overstrain motor and
damage its electrical components -an
overheated motor is a fire hazard!
- To avoid possible injuries or property
damage, please always make absolutely
certain that no persons or objects are lo­
cated in the range of motion of any
equipment being operated.
