This owner's manua l contains important infor­
mation, tips, suggestions, and warnings for
the use of your veh icle.
Make sure that this owner's manua l is always
located in the vehicle. This is especia lly impor­
tant if you allow other people to drive the ve­

deadline date. Some of the equipment descri­

The ligh t 1111 (USA)/ . (Canada) illumi­
nates when the ignit ion is tu rned on. I t goes
out after the engine has been started and the
parking brake is fully released. This indicates
that the brake warning lig ht is funct ion ing
properly.
If the brake warn ing light doe s not light up
w hen the engin e is cr anking o r the p arking
br ak e is applied, th ere m ay be a malfun ction
in th e electrical syste m. In thi s cas e, conta ct
y ou r A udi dealer .
If the ABS fails, the ABS warning/indicator
light
E (USA mode ls)! EIJ (Canada models)
f lashes together with the brake system warn­
ing/indicator light

(USA models): If the warning light 1111 and
the warning light

mediately contact your author ized Audi dealer
or qualified workshop to have all brake pads

When the light comes on, an audible warning
signa l is also given.
Parking brake set
The parking brake warning light_ /_
(Canada models) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set. In addition, a warning tone
will sound after you have driven for longer
than 3 seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/
h).

-Always observe the warnings in

gine hood and check ing the bra ke fluid.
- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard! Stop the car and get professional
assistance. -
USA models: If both, the
1111 warning
light and the
E warn ing light come
on at the same time, the rear wheels
could lock up first under hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes can
cause loss of vehicle contro l and an acci­
dent. Have your veh icle repa ired immedi­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop . Drive s low ly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- Canada models:
If both, the b rake warn­
ing light . and the ABS warning light
EiJ come on at the same time, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard
brak ing. Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of veh icle control and an
accident. Have your vehicle repaired im­
mediately by your author ized Audi dealer
or a qualified wo rkshop. Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- If the b rake warning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
pa rking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the flu id leve l in
the brake fl uid reservo ir is too low . If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediate ly at low speed to the nea rest
author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied work­
shop and have the brake system inspect­
ed.
-Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with maximum stopping powe r
i n critical s ituations. You must allow for
increased b raking dis tances. The extra
distance used up by fading bra kes could
lead to an accident.
tli1 !.!r Safety systems
The I ( U SA models) . (Canada mode ls) in­
dicator light monitors the safety systems e.g.
(airbags, pretensioners) and i lluminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignitio n
o n.

_L Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
When the. symbol in the display flashes,
then either the eng ine coolant
temperature is
too h igh, or the coolant
level is too low . In ad­
d ition to the symbol, the fo llowing message
a lso appears in the display:

~ Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
~ Turnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level ¢ page 173.
~ Add coolant if necessary ¢ page 173 .
~ Conti nue driving only after the eng ine cool­
ant warn ing/ indicator light goes out .
~ Contact you r authorized Audi dea le r fo r as-
s istance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the
radiato r fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion .
If the generator warning/ind icator light
should also illuminate ¢
page 16, then the
fan belt may be damaged .
A WARNING
-If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
sa fe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights ¢
page 51, Emergency
flasher.
- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coolant escaping . -
The engine compartment of any vehicle
is a dangerous area . Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn off the eng ine and allow it to cool.
Follow the warn ing stickers .
(D Note
Do not continue dr iv ing if the . symbol
ill uminates. There is a malfunction in the
engine cooling system -you could damage
your engine .
~ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicato r light illum inates while you are
driv ing , there is a malfunction in the electro­
mecha nica l steering. If the indi cator light is
showing
'".[-1. there may be a reduction in pow ­
er steering assist. If the indicator light is
showing ., ther e may be a tota l loss of pow ­
er steering assist. The stee ring must be in­
spected immed iately by a qualified workshop
¢ .&. .With the eng ine not running (e.g . when
the car is being towed), there is also no power
ass ist available .
A WARNING
-
If there is a ma lfunction, the indicato r
l ight for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist il l uminates. Seek pro fessional assis­
tance.
~ Convertible top
The warning/indicator light monitors the con­
vertible top function .
The !I warning/ indicator light illumi nates
when you switch on the ignition for about 2 seconds as a check and then goes out. The
warning/indicator ligh t has the following
functions :
- The light illumi nates when the foldi ng top
opens or closes.
- I t flashes if one of the cond it ions for auto­
mat ically lower ing or ra is ing the convertible
top is no t met and the switch to actuate the
convertible top is pressed . .,..

Driver information
system
Introduction
The Driver information display inside the in ­
strument cluster provides you, the driver ,
with important information.

With the igni tion on, the display in the Dr iver
I nformation System shows the fol low ing in­
formation :
- CD* inserted or Radio* station set
- Outs ide temperature* : At temperatures be-
low 41 °F ( +S °C), a snowflake symbol ap­
pears in front of the temperatu re d isplay

- Warning when a door, the engine compa rt-
ment lid or the trunk lid is not closed .

Auto Check Control
Some f unct ions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operati ng sta tus when yo u
switch the ign ition on and whi le you a re driv­
ing. Malfunctions or req uired service proce­
dures ar e signaled audib ly and indicated by
red and yellow i lluminated symbols and re ­
m inders in the display.
A WARNING -
- Never rely exclusively on the outside
temperature display to determine if a
road surface is icy or not . K eep in m ind
that road surfaces, espec ially br idges
and overp asses, co uld be ice covered and
slippe ry even at an outside tempe ra tu re
above 4 1 °F (+5 °C).
- Always remembe r, even if the "snow­
f lake" symbo l (ice warning) does not ap­
pear in the disp lay, black ice could be on
the road .
- A lways reduce your speed and d rive with
specia l care in cold weather cond itions
when the chance of encountering icy
road surfaces increases.
(D Tips
- If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are
dr iving at a very low speed, the tempera­
t u re s hown in the d isp lay m ight be
slightly h igher than the actual o utside
temperature. Th is is caused by the heat
being radiated from the engine .
- On vehicles with Audi Nav igat ion sys­
tem *, the displays may differ from their
normal appearance during navigation .

the calculation of the current trip informa­
t ion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2
hours
the memory is reset automatica lly.
Total -trip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the sing le-trip memory, the total-trip
memory is not reset automatically. This per­
mits you to evaluate your dr iving data for the
entire period between manual resets.

The effic ien cy program can help you to use
less fuel

Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two
switches on the windshield wiper lever.

puter (memory level 1 or 2) appears in the

Resetting the function to zero
" Push the I Reset I button @ for at least two
seconds.
You can reset the fo llowing values to zero us­
ing the
I Reset I button :
- driving time -
distance
- average f uel mileage
- average speed
The t rip computer only operates when the ig­
nition is on. When you turn on the ignition,
the function that was in use when you last
turned the ignition off will be displayed .

-You can also set the values for the func­
tions to zero in the menu display

-All stored values will be lost if the vehi­
cle battery is disconnected .
- The driving information in the efficiency
program is a lso reset to zero with the
single-trip memory.

Some funct ions in yo ur vehicle can be set , ac­
t ivated, and controlled by
Menus (e.g. Acous­
tic park assist *). With these menus you can al­
so select the information shown in the driver
information system, which operates only with
the ignition switched on. Operation is control­
led by the
! Reset I button and the rocker switch
on the wiper lever
q page 25, fig . 12.
The Start menu shows you the different dis­
play types:

Fue l economy messages are displayed when
fuel consumption is increased by certain con­
ditions. If you follow these fuel economy mes ­
sages, you can reduce your vehicle's consump­
t ion of fuel. The messages appear automati­
cally and are only displayed in the efficiency
program . The fuel economy messages turn off
automatically after a certain period of time .

-Once you have turned a fuel economy
message off, it will only appear again af­
ter you turn the ignition on aga in.
- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
tervals over a period of ti me.
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed
according ly . The display works in two stages :
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a serv­
ice rem inder appears in the display when you
turn on the ignition.
After about 5 seconds the display sw itches
back to normal. The d istance and time re- maining are
updated each time the ignition is
turned on until the date due for service is
reached.
Service due
When the due date for service is reached, th e
message
Service due! appears in the instru­
ment cluster immediately after you turn on
the ignition . Additionally, a warning tone
sounds. After about 5 seconds the disp lay
switches back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due,
can be shown in the instrument cluster by se­
lecting the service interval display . Select
Chec k > Service > Oil change or Service by us­
ing the
I RESET I button and the rocker switch

Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer will reset the cor­
responding service schedule after performing
the appropriate service on you r vehicle. You
also have the possibility to reset the oil
change schedule after having performed an
o il change according to Audi specif ications.
- Switch the ignition on.

button is not pulled within 5 seconds, the
display reset mode closes.
(D Note
If you disconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service
interval display dur ing this time and no
serv ice reminder will appear. Remember
that observing the proper service intervals
i s vitally important to extending the life of
your vehicle, pa rticularly the engine, and
maintaining its value. Even if the mileage
driven is low, the maximum period of one
year from one service to the next m ust not
be exceeded.

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. To fold the key out and back
in place, press the re lease button

@ Valet ke y
The valet key on ly fits the lock in the driver's
door and the ignition lock. If you have to leave
the key with somebody e lse, you are well-ad­
vised to turn over the valet key only.
Be aware that the rear lid and glove compart­
ment can be opened from inside the vehicle
using the release buttons .

The eme rgency key is only for temporary use if
the vehicle key should be lost or misplaced

If you lose a key, contact you r a uthorized Audi

Registered ke ys
You can check to find out how many keys have
been reg istered to your vehicle. Therefore,
when buy ing a used veh icle, make sure to get
all of the keys that belong to it.

- Do not leave your vehicle unattended
wit h the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unauthorized persons could endange r
you o r result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle. A lways loc k all doors a nd take the
key.
- D o not leave ch ildren unattended in the
veh icle, especially wi th access to vehicle
keys . Unguarded access to the keys pro ­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­ supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in ser ious in­
jury.
{!) Tips
- If you open the driver's door with the key
left in the ignit ion lock, a chime will
sound . Th is is your rem inder to remove
the key and lock the door.
- For security reasons, rep lacement keys
are only ava ilable from Audi dealers .

Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
The power lock ing system in your ve hicle in­
corporates the fo llow ing funct ions:
- Central locking function
- Remote con tro l feature q page 33 .
- Anti -Theft Alarm Sys tem q page 38.
A ll the doors and the rear lid are locked by the
centra l locking system when you lock the vehi­
cle.
The unlocking a nd lock ing mode * can be
changed in t he d river i nfo rmation system
qpage24.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can un lock the vehicle from outs ide e ither
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in t he driver's door lock.
When you
unlock your veh icle:
- The anti-theft alarm system is deactivated br iefly.
- The veh icle inter ior lights ill uminate for ap­
proximate ly 30 seconds.
- All turn signa l lights will f lash twice w hen
the car is unlocked.
- After unlock ing the vehicle, yo u have 30 sec­
onds to open a door or the rear lid. After 30
seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the ant i-theft a larm system activates again.
The rear lid can be locked or un locked either
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in the driver's door lock.
Unlock ing the ve hicle w ith the remote co ntrol
c::::5 will only unlock the rear lid, to open it, the
lid handle needs to be p ressed .
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from o utside e ither by
using the remote control
or by insert ing and
turning the key in the drivers's door lock.
When you
lo ck the vehicle:
- All doors and the rear lid are locked. -
All turn signal lights wi ll flash once when
the car is loc ked .
- The ant i-theft a larm system is ac tiva ted.
The ho rn of the anti -theft alarm system wi ll
sound and t he anti-theft a la rm system read­
iness light, located in the center of the in­
strument panel be low the w indshield on the
r ight side of the air vent, will start to blink.
- The vehicle interior lights turn off.
Automat ic lock ing*
T he au tom atic locking fea ture locks a ll the ve­
hicle doors an d the rear lid when you drive
faster than 9 m ph (15 km/h).
You can unlock t he vehi cle from the i nside by:
- remov ing the key from the igni tion swi tc h
(the vehi cle w ill automatically u nlock itself)
or
- pressi ng the un loc k pa rt of the power lock
sw itch

pull ing the door ha ndle (to open the doo r).
If you wish, yo u can have an a utho rized Aud i
dealer convert your power doo r lock system to
automat ic locking.

_& WARNING
- When you loc k yo ur vehicle from o utside,
nobody- espec ia lly children -shou ld re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when yo u lock the vehicle from the out­
side th e wi ndows cannot be o pened from
the inside.
- Wh en you leav e th e ve hicle, always re ­
move the ign ition key and take it w ith
you. This will preven t passe ngers (chil­
d ren, f or example) from acci denta lly be­
i n g loc ke d in the vehicle s hould they
