BRAKE/ (CD) Brake system
This warning/indicator light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
If the - (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) symbo l flashes in the disp lay with the
parking brake released, there is a malfunction
in the brake system. In addition to the sym­
bol, one of two messages appears in the dis ­
play:
Stop vehicle and check brake fluid level
Stabilization program and ABS fault! See
Owner's manual
.,. Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
.,. Obtain p rofessional assistance.

The ligh t 1111 (USA)/ . (Canada) illumi­
nates when the ignit ion is tu rned on. I t goes
out after the engine has been started and the
parking brake is fully released. This indicates
that the brake warning lig ht is funct ion ing
properly.
If the brake warn ing light doe s not light up
w hen the engin e is cr anking o r the p arking
br ak e is applied, th ere m ay be a malfun ction
in th e electrical syste m. In thi s cas e, conta ct
y ou r A udi dealer .
If the ABS fails, the ABS warning/indicator
light

signa l is also given.
Parking brake set
The parking brake warning light_ /_
(Canada models) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set. In addition, a warning tone
will sound after you have driven for longer
than 3 seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/
h).

- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard! Stop the car and get professional
assistance. -
USA models: If both, the
1111 warning
light and the
E warn ing light come
on at the same time, the rear wheels
could lock up first under hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes can
cause loss of vehicle contro l and an acci­
dent. Have your veh icle repa ired immedi­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop . Drive s low ly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- Canada models:
If both, the b rake warn­
ing light . and the ABS warning light
EiJ come on at the same time, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard
brak ing. Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of veh icle control and an
accident. Have your vehicle repaired im­
mediately by your author ized Audi dealer
or a qualified wo rkshop. Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- If the b rake warning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
pa rking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the flu id leve l in
the brake fl uid reservo ir is too low . If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediate ly at low speed to the nea rest
author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied work­
shop and have the brake system inspect­
ed.
-Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with maximum stopping powe r
i n critical s ituations. You must allow for
increased b raking dis tances. The extra
distance used up by fading bra kes could
lead to an accident.
tli1 !.!r Safety systems
The I ( U SA models) . (Canada mode ls) in­
dicator light monitors the safety systems e.g.
(airbags, pretensioners) and i lluminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignitio n
o n.

speed displayed in the driver information sys­
tem . Keep in mind that the engine speed will
not exceed the va lue disp layed in the driver in­
formation system, for example when down­
shifting.
Please go to an authorized Audi dea ler or oth­
er qualified workshop to have the ma lfunction
repaired.
~ . Checking the engine oil level

If the II symbol comes on, add 1 quart (1 li­
ter) of oil at the next opportunity

If the II symbol illuminates, contact your
author ized Audi dealer and have the oil sensor
inspected .
Bi) Fuel supply too low
When the 001 symbol illuminates, this means
there are about 1.9 gallons (7 liters) of fuel
left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

~ Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you
when a vehicle light bulb has become defec­
tive.
If a defective bulb has been detected by the
system or a light bulb burns out,
the m sym ­
bol w ith a message appears in the display to
te ll you which bulb is burnt out and where it is
located. For example :
Rear left turn signal
After 5 seconds, the message disappears. If
you want to recall the message into the dis­ play, press the CHECK button

There are three reasons why the defective
bulb message would appear in the display:
- The light bu lb has burnt out

-The wire connection to the light bulb is de-
fective.
Have the bulb replaced or the connect ion re­
paired by your authorized Aud i Service depart­
ment .
A WARNING
-
-Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
p lode while they are being changed caus­
ing serious personal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
high-vo ltage section of gas discharge
(xenon) lamps. Failing to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury!
BRAKE LIGHT!<®> Brake light defective
In case of a malfunction or component fail-
ure, the symbol (USA models)/
It:$ ing electrical components should be checked,
repaired or replaced, as necessary:
- Brake light bulbs
- All wiring connections
- Brake light switch

(D Note
Never push the vehicle or apply force to
the rear spoiler -it could be damaged.
@ Tips
Clean the spoiler compartment every 2 to
3 months . The spoiler compartment must
always be free of ice, snow, leaves or other
debris.
Braking
General information
What affects braking efficiency?
Oper ating condit ions and d riving hab it s
T he brakes on today's automobi les are st ill
s ubject to wear, depending largely on opera t­
ing conditions and dr iv ing habi ts
c> & . On
vehicles that are e ither driven mostly in stop ­
and-go city traffic or are d riven hard , the
b rake pads should be checked by you r author­
i zed Audi dealer more often than specified i n
the
Warr ant y & Maint enan ce booklet . Failure
to have your brake pads inspected can res ult
in red uced brake performance.
On steep slopes, you shou ld use the brak ing
effect of the eng ine. This way, you p revent un­
necessa ry wear on the brake system . If you
must use yo ur brakes, do not hold the brakes
down continuously. Pump th e brakes at inter­
vals.
Noises may occur when braking d epending on
the speed, braki ng force and outside condi­
tions such as temperature and humidity.
Moistu re or road salt
Unde r certain conditions, for example, w hen
driving through water or ve ry heavy rain, or
even after washing your vehicle, the braking
effect can be reduced d ue to moisture (or in
fre ezing conditions ice) on the brake pads . A
few ca utious brake applicat ions should dry off
the b rake pads or remove any ice coatings.
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when th e vehicle is driven on a salt-covered

road and the b rakes are no t used. Likewise ,
you clean off accumulated salt coating from brake d iscs and pads with a few cautious ap ­
plications of the brake

Cor ro sion
T here may be a tendency for dir t to build up
on the brake pads and corrosion to form on
the discs if the car is not driven regu larly or
on ly fo r short trips with litt le use of the
brakes.
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if cor­
rosion has formed on the discs, it is advisable
to clean off the pads and discs by braking
firmly a few times from a moderately high
speed

Faults in the brak e syst em
If you shou ld notice a sudden increase in
brake pedal trave l, then one of the two brake
c ircuits may have fai led

Low brake fluid lev el
Malfunctions can occur in the brake system if
the b rake fluid level is too low. The brake fluid
level is monitored electronica lly.
Brake booster
T he brake booster inc reases the pressure that
you generate with the brake peda l. It works
o nl y when the engine is running

Brake lining wear status
Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the open ings in the wheel. If neces­
sary, the wheel may be removed for t his in­
spection

-You should perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of cleaning the brake
system only if road conditions permit.
Other road users must not be put at risk -
you may cause an accident!
- Before descend ing a steep grade, reduce
speed and sh ift transmission into a lower

-Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever to "P" (Park).
- Always let the engine cool down. Hot
components will burn skin on contact.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment . Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment .
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents. They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxili­
ary electric fan is temperature controlled
and can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the engine is still warm. The cool­
ant system is pressurized and hot cool­
ant could spray out .
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any circumstances . This increases the
risk of burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electri­
cal system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery .
- Never smoke or work near heaters or
open flames. Fluids in the engine com­
partment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im­
mediately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal in­
jury while the engine is running or being
started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair
with the engine running: -
First, fully apply the parking brake,
move selector lever to "P" (Park) .
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
starting, and wear no clothing that will hang or droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemical hazards~&, .
A WARNING

- Engine exhaust, some of its constituents, and certain vehicle components contain
or emit chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer and birth de­

certain fluids contained in vehicles and
certain products of component wear con­

- Battery posts, terminals and related ac­
cessories contain lead and lead com­
pounds, chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer and reproduc­
tive harms. Wash hands after handling.

When adding fluids, always make sure that
they are poured into the proper container
or filler opening, otherwise serious dam ­
age to vehicle systems will occur.
@) For the sake of the environment
To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly. If
you see spots from oil or other vehicle flu­ ids, have your vehicle inspected by an au­
thorized Audi dealer.

Engine oil
Engine oil specifications
The engine in your Audi needs the right kind
of oil.
The eng ine in your Aud i is a sophist icated
powerplant that was built to exacti ng spec ifi­
cations . T his eng ine needs t he right k ind of
engine oil that meets specifications regarding
quality and viscosity so that it can run
smoot hly and reliably . Choosing the right o il
and changing oil within the time and mileage
intervals printed in your vehicle's Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet matters a lot more to­
day than it did years ago. Audi has developed
a specia l quality standard for engine oil t hat
will help assu re that you r vehicle's engine w ill
get the l ubr ication i t needs fo r proper opera­
tion.
Modern engine lubr ication has taken a q uan­
tum leap in the last few years. Many synt het ic

engine becomes hot .
.&_ WARNING
-The coo ling system is under pressure and
can get
very hot. Reduce the risk of
sca lding from hot coolant by following
these steps .
- Turn off the eng ine and a llow it to cool
down.
- Protec t your face, hands and arms from
escap ing fl uid and steam by cover ing
the cap with a large, thick rag.
- Tu rn the cap slowly and
very ca refully
in a counter -clockwise direct ion while
applying light, downward p ress ure on
the top of the cap.
- To avo id being burned, do not sp ill an­
tifreeze or coolant on the exhaust sys­
tem or hot engine parts. Under certain
conditions, the ethylene glyco l in en­
g ine coolant can catch fire.
- Antifreeze is poisonous. Always store an ­
t ifreeze in its or iginal container and we ll
out of the reach of children.
- If you drain the coolant, it must be
caught and safely stored in a proper con­
ta iner clearly marked "poison".
(D Note
- Coolant po llutes the environment and
could cause an engine fire. Excess cool­
ant will be forced out through the pres­
sure re lief
valve in the cap when the en­
gine becomes hot .
- If, in an emergency, only water can be
added, the correct ratio between wate r
and antifreeze~
page 172 must be re­
stored as soon as possib le.
@) For the sake of the environment
Dra ined coolant should not be reused. Al­
ways dispose of used coolant while obse rv­
ing all environmental regulations .
Radiator fan
The radiator fan switches on automatically by
itself .
The electric radiator fan is controlled by ther­
moswitches that switch on and off depending
on coolant and eng ine compartment tempera­
tures.
An a uxiliary electric radiator fan* sw itches on
and off depending on coolant temperature
and other vehicle operat ion conditions .
After you switch the engine off, the aux iliary
fan can continue running for up to 10 minutes
-even w ith the ignition off. It can even switc h
on aga in later by itself

- the temperature of the engine coo lant rises
due to the heat build-up from the engine in
the engine compartment, or
- the engine compartment heats up because
the vehicle is parked in intense sunlight.
.&_ WARNING
-
- To reduce the risk of personal inju ry nev-
er touch the radiator fan.
- The auxiliary electric fan is temperature
controlled and can sw itch on suddenly
even when the engine is not ru nning.
- The auxiliary radiator fan sw itches on au­
tomatically when the engine coo lant
reac hes a certain t emperature and w ill
continue to run until the coolant temper­
a ture drop s.
