Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function
of certain veh icle featu res and components . It
simply makes sure these features and compo nents are work ing proper ly . The Auto -Check
contro l wo rks as long as the ignition is on, as
well as whenever the vehicle is driven.
If a componen t is ma lf u nctioning or if the
n eed for an urgent repair has been detected,
this will appear in the instrument cluster dis
p lay . You w ill a lso hear an audible warn ing
tone . The displays are co lor coded in e ither
red or yellow depending on their level of prior
ity .
A red symbo l means
Dange r, a yellow symbo l
indic ates
Warning . In certain s ituations, in
formation message for the dr iver appear in
addit ion to the red and yellow symbols.
Function te st : automat ic transmi ssion
The Auto -Check Control will automat ica lly
perform a test each time you switch on the ig
n ition. With the selector lever in P or N, the
following message appears in the display :
When station ary apply brake pedal while se
lecting gear
When you select a different gear (for exam
p le : R, D, etc.), the message will d isappear
and the Auto-Check function is d isplayed .
I f the re is a m alfu nction, then the malfunc
tion message w ill appear about 15 seconds af
ter the yo u start the vehicle. At t he same time
you will hear a warning tone .
Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the
instrument cluster display in addition to the
red and yellow symbols .
Fig. 24 Ins trume nt cl ust er: CHECK b utto n
For example, if the transmiss ion selec to r l ever
is not in the P position when the engine is
turned off, the following message appears :
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Door s do not l ock if you are not in P .
The ig nition key can only be removed with the
selector in this position . Th is and other mes
sages are bro ugh t up if a func tion cannot be
carr ied out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appea rs in the display, a d river
message can be shown by pressing the
I CH ECK I button.
For example, the symbo l for a problem w ith
engine oil p ressure . appears in the d isp lay .
If you then p ress the

Switch off engine ! Oil pr essure too low
The driver message in the display goes out af
ter about 5 seconds . The driver message can
be displayed again by briefly press ing the
I CH ECKi button.
Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a

General information
The winds hield wipers and the w indshield
washer system operate only with the ignition
on.
During a temporary stop , e.g . at a t raff ic sig
na l, the set wipe speed is automatically re
duced by one stage.
The winds hield washer no zzles a re heated at
l ow temperatures when the ignition is on .
Removing w ate r droplet s
About 5 seconds after the wash cycle is com
plete, the wiper system performs a single au
tomatic wipe cycle to remove any water drop
l ets that remain on the windshield whi le dr iv
ing.
If you would like to deactivate this delayed
wipe cycle wh ile driving, you have to pull the
l eve r to pos ition ® again within 10 seconds
after this wipe cy cle.
Water droplet removal is reactivated after the
ignit ion is switched off and then on again .
Winter position
To speed up de -icing of the w indshield w ipers,
t hey move to the winter posi tion when the ig
n ition is switched off and at an outside tem
perature below 39
°F (4 °(). In this posit ion ,
the w indshield wipers are in an area on the
g lass w hich is reached by the a ir vents below
the glass. It is also easier to remove snow and
ice from the wi ndshield wipers in this posi
tion .
The wipe rs leave the w inte r position, when
the ign ition is swi tc h ed on, if the winds hield
wiper lever is operated or the active rain sen
sor reacts to moistu re.
Rain sensor
The rain senso r operates on ly in the inte rva l
wiper position . When it sta rts to ra in , the in
terval wipe r mode is activated automati ca lly.
If the windshie ld w iper lever is in the inte rval
wipe posit ion w ith the ign ition switched off, the ra
in sensor is not activated until ve hicle
sp eed is above 4 mph (6 km/h).
T o red uce the sensi tivi ty of the rain senso r,
the switch @ mus t be moved down . T o in
crease the sensitivity of the rain sensor, the
switch must be moved up.
T he higher the sensit iv ity se tt ing , the sooner
the windshie ld wipers react to moist ure on
the windshie ld . I nc reased sensitivity is sig
naled by the windshie ld wipers making a sin
gle pass over the windshield.
T he rain sensor w iper intervals depend on the
sensitivity setting as well as vehicle speed.
D uring brief stops, wiper motio n will adj ust in
relat ion to the amount o f rain on the w ind
shield .

(D Note
In freezing or near freezing conditions:
- Always check that the w iper b lades are
not frozen to the g lass before you turn
the wipe rs on . Loosen a wiper blade
wh ich is frozen in place before operating
the wipers to prevent damage to the
w iper blade or the wiper motor.
- Do not use the w ipers to clear a frosted
w indow. Us ing the wipers as a conven

blades .

Engine oil specifications
The engine in your Audi needs the right kind
of oil.
The engine in your Audi is a sophisticated
powerplant that was built to exacting spec ifi

engine oil that meets specifications regardi ng
quality and viscosity so that it can run
smooth ly and reliab ly. Choosing the right o il

intervals printed in your vehicle's Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet matters a lot more to
day than it did years ago . Audi has deve loped
a spec ia l quality standard for engine oil that
will help assure that your vehicle's engine w ill
get the lubrication it needs for proper opera

Modern engine lubrication has taken a quan

· Engine oil consumption
To provide effective l ubr ication and cooling for
interna l eng ine parts, all interna l combustion
engines use some oi l. Oi l consumption varies
from eng ine to engine and may change over
the life of the engine . Engines tend to use
more o il du ring the b reak-in period tha n they
do afterward, when o il cons umption has sta
bilized. Depend ing on the way the vehicle is
driven and the operating conditions, oil con
s u mption can be up to
1 quart per 1,200
miles (l liter per 2,000 km) . Consumption
may be higher within the first
3,000 m iles
(5,000 km) .
U nder normal conditions , the rate of oi l con
s u mption depends on oi l quality as well as vis
cosity, engine speed (rpm), outs ide tempera
ture, road conditions, the amount of oil dilu
tion caused by condensed water or fue l resi
due, and ox idat ion of the o il. Oi l consumption
may increas e with eng ine wear over time, un
t il rep lacement of worn engine pa rts may be
come ne cessa ry.
Because of all these var iables, there is no
standard o r "n orma l" rate of o il cons umption .
We urge you to check the engine oil level at
regular interval s, preferably every time y ou
fill the fuel t ank, and always before a long
trip .
The oil pres sure warning light. i s not an
indicator of low engine oil level. If the warn

flashes while dr iving (above 1500 rpm), a
buzzer will sound. It indicate s that the oil

driving or let the engine idle, as damage may
