Outside temperature display

At temperatures below 41 °F (+S °C) a snow­
flake symbol appears ahead of the tempera­
ture display . It is intended to remind the driv­
er to pay spec ial attent ion to
ic e on the roa d.
If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are driving
at a very low speed, the temperature shown in
the display might be slightly higher than the
actual outside temperature . Th is is caused by
the heat being rad iated from the engine .
If you have selected the °C (degrees Celsius)
unit for temperature in the MMI, the outside
temperature display also appears automat i­
cally in
°C.
A WARNING
- Never rely excl usively on the outside
temperatu re d isplay to determine if a
road surface is icy or not . Keep in mind
that road surfaces, especially bridges
and overpasses, could be ice covered and
s li ppery even at an outs ide temperature
above 41 °F (+ S °C).
- Always remember, even if the "snow­
flake" symbol (ice warn ing) does not ap­
pear in the display, black ice could be on
the road.
- Always reduce your speed and dr ive with
special care in cold weather conditions
when the chance of encountering icy road s urfaces increases .
Digital speedometer

Current speed appears in the disp lay. Speed is
shown in 1 mph measures (USA models) or 1
km/h measures (Canada models) .
You can switch the disp lay from m iles to kilo­
meters and vice versa via the MMI.
Open door or trunk lid warning
The pictogram alerts you when doors or the
rear lid have been left open .

With the ign it ion sw itched on, the ope n door
or rear lid warning illuminates when at least
one door or the hood or the trunk lid is not
cl osed . The symbol a lso shows you
which
doo r(s) o r lid is not closed.
In the illustration
~ fig . 13 it is the dr iver's
doo r, the left rear door and the rear lid. As
soon as all the doors, the hood, the rear lid
and the f uel filler cap are prope rly closed, the
door and rear lid warning turns off and the
Driver Information System functions selected
are displayed again.

Im button twice, all doors and the lug­
gage compartment will unlock . When lock­
ing the vehicle, all of the doors and t he lug­
gage compar tme nt lock a utoma tica lly.
Unlock doors * -You can spec ify if all doors o r
only the d river's doo r shou ld un lock wh en un­
l oc king t he ve hicle.
- If you select All and press the
l@J button on
the remote control key, a ll of the doors and
the luggag e compartment will un lock .
- If you select
Driver and then press the Im
button on the remote control key, only the
dr ive r's door w ill unlock. If you press the
l@J
button twice, all doors and the luggage
compar tment will u nlock. When lo cking the
vehicle, a ll of the doors and the luggage
compartment lock a utomatically. In vehicles
with a convenience key*, only t he door
whose hand le you pu ll w ill unlock.

Locking and unlocking the vehicle from
inside
The vehicle can be locked or unlocked from
the inside using the power locking switches .

If you lock the veh icle using the power locking
switch, p lease note the following:
- Yo u cannot open the doors or the rear lid
from the
outside ( in cr eased se curity, for ex­
ample when you are stopped at a red light).
- The diodes in the powe r locking switches il-
lum inate when all the doors and the rear lid
are closed and locked .

• The rear lid un locks automatically and opens
slightly .
• Lift the rear lid.

• Pull the rear lid dow n and a llow it to drop

A WARNING
-After closing the rear lid, always pull up
on it to make sure that it is properly
closed. Otherw ise it could open suddenly
when the vehicle is moving.
- To help prevent po isonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle , al­
ways keep the rear lid closed while dr iv­
ing. Never transport objects larger than
those which fit completely into the lug­
gage area, because then the rear lid can­
not be fully closed.
- Never leave you r vehicle unattended es­
peci ally wi th the re ar lid left open. A
child could c rawl into the ca r through the
l u ggage compartment and pull the lid
shut, becom ing trapped and unab le to
get out. To reduce the risk of persona l in­
jury, never let children play in or around
yo ur vehicle . Always keep the rear lid as
well as the vehicle doors closed when not
in use.
- Always ensure that no one is w ith in
range of the rear lid when it is mov ing, in
part icula r close to the h inges -fingers o r
hands can be pinched.

Automatic rear lid/trunk lid operation
Applies to vehicles: with automatic rear lid/trunk lid oper­
ation
The trunk lid can be opened and closed auto­
matically.

A WARNING
- Never close the rear lid inattentively or

mounted on the rear lid, it may not be
ab le to open completely or an opened
rear lid may close by itself because of the
added weight. So the open rear lid must
be supported or the weight must be re­
moved from the luggage rac k first.

- If the rear lid is open or not properly
locked when the ign ition is turned on,

- T he automatic rear lid opening/clos ing
process can be stopped by ho ld in g the
re ar lid w ith your hand. The lid can then
be further opened/closed by h and.
- I f there is a mechan ica l problem wit h the
automatic rear lid
opening proces s or
t here is an obstruction, the process is
stop ped immediately.
- I f there is a mechan ica l problem wit h au­
tomatic closing fo r the rea r lid or there
is an obstr uction, it opens again slightly
r ight away . Chec k to see why the rear lid
cou ld not be closed before attempting to
close it again.
- If the rear lid on a locked vehicle is un­
locked with the midd le button~ on the
remote key, the rear lid is automat ically
locked again immed iate ly after closing.
T his is indicated by the turn signals
blinking.
- The followi ng applies to vehicles equ ip­
ped w ith the Convenience key* feature: if
the remote control key is left in the lug­
gage compa rtment, l uggage comp art­
ment w ill autom atic ally unlo ck itsel f af­
ter yo u lock the vehicle. This preven ts
you from unintentionally locking you r
key in the luggage compartment.
- If the vehicle battery charge drops be low
a certain level, yo u can sti ll open o r close
the rear lid manually, however, you w ill
need to apply more force to close it. ..,.

this mode. If the suspension is switched from
this mode to another mode, dynamic mode
cannot be re-selected .
(D Tips
-For vehicles with a factory installed tow ­
ing hitch or a trailer hitch that was in­
stalled later accord ing to factory specifi­
cations, the system recognizes "Trailer
tow ing mode" and activates this specia l
mode automatically, as soon as the elec­
trical connection on the trailer socket is
connected. The mode ceases a utomat i­
ca lly when the elect rical connection to
t h e trai ler socket is d isconnected.
- If the tra iler towing mode has been acti­
vated, the vehicle will not drop to the
l ow or highway level.
Cargo mode
Applies to vehicles: with Adapt ive Air Suspe nsio n
The rear of the vehicle can be lowered to
make it easier to load.

Activating cargo mode in the MMI*

Lower for loading .
In cargo mode, the rear ax le is lowered by 2 .2
inches (S5 mm), compared to the normal lev ­
el.
While the veh icle is in ca rgo mode, the seg­
ments do not appear as filled in the segment
display.
Cargo mode i s automatic ally c an ce le d again
when a different mode is selected in the MM I
Display, or when a speed of about 3 mph (5
km/ h) has been exceeded.
If the system is tempora rily unavailable due
to, for instance, an empty compressed air
tank, the
Lower for loading * function appears
greyed out in the MMI Display. As soon as the
system is available again, the funct ion can
once more be selected in the disp lay.
While the vehicle is being lowered, the indica­
tor light @~
fig. 190 on the switch in the
l uggage compartment flashes. When the car ­
go leve l has been reached, the indicator light
comes on and remains on as long as the vehi­
cle is in cargo mode. When the vehicle is
r aised agai n, the indicator light flashes again.
(D Note
M ake sure before canceling cargo mode
that there is sufficient clearance above the
vehicle and around the trunk lid, if open.
(D Tips
- The vehicle w ill not be lowered if one of
the vehicle doors is open, or if the com­
pressed air tank is empty. The indicator
light on the switch flashes three times.
- Whe n the compressed air tank is empty,
it will refill when you drive at speeds
over 25 mph (40 km/ h). The vehicle can
be lowered to cargo level whe n the com­
pres sed air tan k is adequately filled.
- If the vehicle is i n lift or off road mode
when you act ivate cargo mode, the vehi­
cle will fi rst drop down to no rma l level.

-Never get back into your vehicle while re­
fueling. If in exceptional circumstances
you must get back in your vehicle while refueling, make certain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill­
er nozzle again. Stat ic electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling .
- Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near your vehicle when refu­
eling or filling a portable fuel container.
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not trave l w ith a portab le
fuel container in your vehicle. The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and cou ld
cause a fire, especia lly in a crash .
-If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for examp le, in the luggage compart­
ment, or on the trunk). Static electr ici­
ty can bui ld up while fi lling and can ig­
nite fuel vapors causing a fire.
- Always p lace a portable fuel container
on the ground before filling.
-Always keep the filler nozzle complete­
ly inside the portable container before
and during filling .
- If filling a portable container made of
metal, the filler nozz le must always be
in contact with the container. This will
he lp prevent static electricity from dis­
charging and cause a fire.
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fue l vapors are
h ighly flammable.
- Always observe local and state/provin­
cial laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel containers.
- Make certain the fuel container meets
industry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F852 -86).

If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
shou ld be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correct ly operated nozzle
switches off automat ically for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fuel because fuel may spill out. In
addition, the expansion space in the fuel
tank w ill be filled -causing the fuel to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol­
lute the environment.
0) Tips
-Running your eng ine while refuelling
may cause vapors to escape or even
cause fuel to sp ill out of the tank . Th is
would then shut off the fuel nozzle be­
fore the tank is ful l.
- Do not refuel your vehicle with the igni­
tion turned on. The fuel gauge may oth­
erwise not indicate the correct f uel level
after refuelling.
- Diesel vehicles* are equipped with a d ie­
sel misfueling protector . It allows the
vehicle to be fueled only with a diese l
fuel pump nozzle. A worn or damaged
nozzle or a nozzle that is too small may
not be able to open the diesel misfueling
protector. If this is the case, try turning
the nozzle before inserting it in the fuel
filler neck, use a different fuel pump or
see your authorized Aud i dea ler or au­
thorized repair facility for assistance. •
