-Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched
off (lever
in position 0). This helps to prevent unin­
tentional switching on and damage to
the windshield wiper system .
@ Tips
-The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is turned off. Activate
the windshield wipers after the ignition is switched back on by moving the wind­
shield wiper lever to any position.
- Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades
cause smearing which can affect the op­
eration of the rain sensor. Check the con­
dition of your windshield wiper blades
regularly.
- The rain sensor is part of the interval
wiping system. Turning
off the ignition
will also deactivate the rain sensor. To re­
activate the sensor, switch
off the inter­
val wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
- Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in
the engine compartment is topped
off
before going on a long trip. Look up
c:;, page 272 for checking and filling the
washer container.
Rear window wiper
The wiper lever is also used to operate the
rear window wiper and the automatic wiper/
washer function.

The rear window wiper and the automatic wip­
er/washer functions are activated as follows:

.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the first po­

Automatic wiper/washer function
.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the second

long as you want the rear wiper/washer to
operate.

running for approx. four seconds.
Switching intermittent wiper action off
.,. Pull the lever all the way back to the original
position.
As soon as the reverse gear is engaged and
the front wipers are turned on and operating
at the same time, the rear wiper also turns on
automatically.
A WARNING
Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving!
Only in good condition are they able to
clear the windows properly to provide un­ restricted visibility. Worn or frayed wiper
blades are a safety hazard!

Replacing windshield wiper blades
(D Note
In freezing or near freezing conditions:
- Always check that the wiper blades are
not frozen to the glass before you turn
the wiper on. Loosen a wiper blade which
is frozen in place before operating the
wiper to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
- Do not use the wiper to clear a frosted
window . Using the wipers as a conven­
ient ice scraper will destroy the wiper
blades.

come the stored setting when the vehicle is
put in reverse gear again.
Tilting th e pa sseng er's si de exte ri or
m irror (only with se at mem ory )
When you move the selector lever into R (Re­
verse), the mirror on the front passenger's door (knob turned to ®
c::> fig. 70) will tilt
slightly downward. This make is easier for you
to see the curb when you are backing into a
parking space .
The mirror returns to its initial position as soon as reverse gear is disengaged and vehicle
speed is above about
9 mph (15 km/h). The
mirror a lso returns to its in itia l posit ion if the
sw itch is moved to the drive r's exte rior mi rror
© o r the ignit ion is switched off.

- Curved (i.e . convex) mirror surfaces in­
crease your field of view. Remembe r th at
vehicles or o ther objects w ill appear
smaller and farther away than when
seen in a flat mirro r. If yo u use this mir ­
ror to est imate distances of following
vehicles when changing lanes, you could
estimate incorrect ly and cause an acci­
dent.
- If the mirror hous ing is moved un inten­
tionally (for example, while park ing your
vehicle), then you must first fo ld the mir­
ro r electrically . Do not readjust the mir­
ror hous ing manually. You could damage
the motor which controls the mi rror.
- If you wash t he veh icle in an automatic
car wash, you must fold the exte rior m ir­
r o rs in to redu ce the r is k of damage to
the mirrors. Never fold power folding ex­
te rior mi rrors* by hand . Only fold them
in and out using the power cont ro ls.
(D Tips
If there should be a malfunc tion in the
elec trical system, you can still ad just the
exterior m irrors by pressing the edge o f
the mirror.

Automatically dimming mirro rs*
... To dim the rearview mirror and both exterior
m irrors*, press the @button . T he diode @
turns on. The rearview and exterior mirrors *
dim automatically when light shines on
them, for examp le from headlights on ave­
hicle to the rear.
A WARNING
-Electro lyte fluid can leak from automatic
d imm ing mirro rs if the glass is broken.
E lect ro lyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes and
respira to ry system.
- Repeated or prolonged exposu re to e lec­
trolyte can cause irritation to the respira ­
t ory sys tem, especially among people
with asthma or o ther resp iratory condi­
tions . Get fresh air immediately by leav ­
ing the vehicle or, if that is not possib le,
open w indows and doors a ll the way.
- If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush
them thorough ly with large amounts of
clean water for at least
15 minutes;
medical attention is recommended.
- If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affect ­
ed area with clean water for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area
with soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly wash af­
fected clothing and shoes before reuse.

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner:
.. Move the front passenger seat into the rear ­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment

• Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright

Do not ride with the seat reclined.

The temperature should be set to 72 ° F
(22 °C) o r higher . Temperat ure is contro lled
automatically. The maximum amount of a ir
flows mainly from the vents below the wind­
shield.
To defog the rear side windows, the air vents in the doo r pillars sho uld be open and di rect­
ed at the windows .
Manual air recirculation ~
Air recirculation prevents exhaust fumes or
other pollution from entering the vehicle.
Turning on air recirculation

Turning off air recirculation
> Press the~ button agai n, or
> press the IAU TO I button, or
> press th e ~ button.
In the a ir recirculation mode, the air in the
passenger compa rtme nt is recirculated and
fil tered to prevent exhaust fumes and other
pollu tion from en teri ng the veh icle . We rec ­
ommend that you use the manu al air recircu ­
l ation under the following conditions :
- when d riving through tunne ls
- in a traffic jam .
A WARNING
Do not use the air reci rc u lat io n mode for
e xte nded per io d s of t i me . T he windows
co uld fo g up since no fres h air ca n e nter
t he vehicle.

Rear window defogger~
The rear window defogger clears the rear win ­
dow of condensation .
> Press the OW button to tur n t he rear window
defogger on and off.
T he rea r window defogger wo rks on ly when
t h e engine is runn ing. The light in t he sw itch
will illumina te when the defogger is on.
T he rea r window defogg er w ill sw itch off au­
tomat ica lly afte r a short time. The t ime the
r ear w indow de fogger rema ins o n w ill va ry de­
pending on the o utside tempera ture.
At very low outs id e temperatures, the rear
window defogger ca n be sw itched on co nti nu­
o usly by pushing the
OW button for more t han
2 seconds . This rema ins stored un til the ign i­
t ion is switc hed off.
A rear w indow defogge r th at was switched on
also remains s tore d for 15 m inu tes after the
ignition is sw itche d off . If the engine is re­
started withi n these 15 m in utes, the rear win ­
dow defogger is a lso activated, depending on
o utside temperat ure . With a vehicle that is
parked for a short time, the rear window de­
fogger does no t need to be manually activat­
ed again .
@ For the sake of the environment
Turn the defogger off when the rear win­
dow is clear. When you save electric ity, you
save fue l.

There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­
tween you r chest and the center of the steer­
ing wheel. If you cannot sit more than 10 in ­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you
reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steer ing wheel.

The stee ring wheel can be adjusted even when
the ignition is turned

seat memory, the individ ual positions for the
steering whee l can be stored along with the
seat posit ion.
A WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause se rious personal injury.
- Adjust the steer ing whee l co lumn on ly
when the veh icle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle cont ro l.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that the re is a min imum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel

yo u cannot ma int ain this min imum d is­
tan ce, the airbag system c annot pro tect
yo u properly.
- If phys ica l limitations prevent yo u from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with yo ur au­
tho rized Audi dea le r to see if adaptive
equipment is availab le.
- If the steering wheel is aligned with your
face, the supp lemental driver's airbag
cannot prov ide as much protect ion in an
acc ident. A lways make sure that the
steeri ng wheel is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi- tions to reduce the risk of persona
l injury
if the dr iver's airbag dep loys .
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steering wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.
Easy entry feature
The easy entry feature makes it easier to en­
ter and exit the vehicle by automatically ad­
justing the steering wheel.
Press the button @¢ page 103, fig. 118 to
turn the easy entry feature on or
off.
When the easy entry feature is turned on (but­
ton depressed), the steering wheel moves up
to the parked pos ition when the ignit ion is
turned
off. After you enter the vehicle, the
stee ring wheel moves to the sto red pos it ion
as soon as you tu rn o n the ignition.
Easy ent ry feature on vehicles w ith
memory seat*
For t he stored steering wheel pos ition to be
re called, the dr iver's seat memory m ust be
swi tched on
(ION/OF F I swi tch in dep ressed po­
s it ion).
If the easy ent ry feature is switched
off, the
stee ring wheel moves to the sto red pos ition

- Never remove the key from the ign ition
lock whi le the vehicle is moving. The
steering wheel will lock, causing loss of
control.
- If you have to leave your vehicle, even for
just a minute, always remove the ignition key and take it with you. This is especially
important if you are going to leave chil-

dren unattended in the vehicle. The chil­
dren could start the engine or use other
vehicle controls. Unsupervised use of ve­
hicle controls (for example, power win­
dows) can cause ser ious personal inju­
ries.

-If you release the ignition key in position
@, the key automatically returns to posi­
tion (!).
- If you open the driver's door when the ig­
nition is sw itched on, a buzzer sounds
and the message
Ignition is on appears
in the instrument cluster display. Please
switch the ignition off.
- T o prevent malfunctions in the ign ition
lock, remove any dirt or deposits from
the key bit so that they do not enter the
ignition lock.
Ignition key safety lock
The ignition key con only be removed when
the selector lever is in the P (Pork) position.
After turning off the ignition, the ignition key
can only be removed from the ignition lock
when the selector lever is in the P (Park) posi­
tion. Afte r you have removed the key, these­
lector lever is locked and cannot be moved.

The engine can only be started with your orig­
inal Audi key.

A cold engine may sound loud after it has
been started . This is due to the hydraulic
va lves building up oil pressure. This is normal
and is not a need for concern.
If the engine does not start immediately, stop
trying after 10 seconds and then try to restart
the engine about 30 seconds Later.
Glow plug system*
Diesel engines are equipped with a glow plug
system whose preheating t ime is controlled by the coo
lant and outs ide temperature . Start
the engine
immediately after the glow plug
indicator light
m sw itches off.
The glow plug indicator light will only illumi­
nate for approximate ly 1 second when the en­
gine is warm or the outside temperature is
higher than 46 °F (8 °C). That means you can
start the engine
immediately .
A WARNING
-Never start or let the engine run in a con-
fined or enclosed area. Exhaust fumes
from the engine contain carbon monoxide,
a colorless and odorless gas . Carbon mon­
oxide can be fatal if inhaled.
- Never leave the engine idling unattend­
ed. An unattended veh icle w ith a runn ing
engine poses a danger of personal injury
or theft .
(D Note
- Avo id high engine speeds, fast accelera­
tion or heavy engine loads while the en­ gine is still cold. This could damage the
eng ine .
- Th e engine cannot be started by pushing
or towing the vehicle .
@ For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to
reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
vehicle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive
off immediately after starting your
vehicle. Maintain moderate speed until the
engine is completely warm . Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature.
