This owner's manua l contains important infor­
mation, tips, suggestions, and warnings for
the use of your veh icle.
Make sure that this owner's manua l is always
located in the vehicle. This is especia lly impor­
tant if you allow other people to drive the ve­
h icle, or if you sell it.
This owner's manua l descr ibes the
equipment
range
specified for this mode l at the editoria l
deadline date. Some of the equipment descri­
bed here will on ly be available at a later date,
or only in specific markets.

(D Tips
The illumination for the instrument cluster
lights up whenever you switch on the igni­
tion with the
vehicle headlights off . As
the daylight fades, the instrument cluster
illuminat ion likewise dims automatically
and will go out completely when the out­
side light is very low. This feature is meant
to remind you to switch on the headlights
when outside light condit ions become
poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge q page 10, fig. 3 (D
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the fol ­
lowing important po ints:
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom of
the gauge, the engine has not yet reached its
operating temperature. Avoid high engine
speeds, heavy engine loads, and heavy throt ­
tle app lications.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating
temperature, the needle will move to the mid­
dle of the gauge and remain there . If the en­
gine is working hard at high outs ide tempera­
tures, the needle may move higher on the
gauge. This is not a cause for concern as long
as the . warning light in the instrument
cluster display does not illuminate. .,..

If th e. warn ing light in th e instr ument clus­
ter disp lay flashes, this can mean one of two
things: either the coo lant
t empera ture is too
high, or the coolant
level is too low

If the needle is we ll in the upper area of the
ga uge, the coo lant temperature is too high.
Stop the veh icle , switch the engine off, and
allow it to cool.
I f the warni ng light comes o n
again after driving a short distance, contact
an author ized Audi d ealer or other qualif ied
wo rkshop.

- N ever open t he engine hood i f you see o r
hear steam, or if you see en gine coolant
dr ipping from the eng ine com partment.
You could burn yo urself. Let the engine
cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant .

temperatures or high eng ine load, the
engine could ove rheat .
- The front spo ile r has been designed to
proper ly distr ibute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving .
If the spoiler is
damaged, th is cou ld re duce the cooling
effect and t he engine co uld th e n over­
hea t. Ask yo ur auth o riz ed Aud i de aler fo r
ass ist ance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicate s the engine RPM
(rev olu tion s per minu tes).
If engine R PM drops be low 1,500, you should
downshift to the nex t lower gea r. T he red a rea
at t he e nd of the s ca le ind icates maxim um p
ermissible engine RPM after the break- in pe­
r iod. Before reaching this a rea , move these­
l ector lever to position D/S o r ease your foot
off the acce lerator pedal.

The !SE T! button performs the following fu nc­

Starting the Auto -Check sequence
T he Au to-C he ck sys tem ¢ page 2 7 const ant­
ly mon itors certa in individu al functions and
components of the vehicle whe n the ignition
is turned on and when th e vehicle is moving .
W it h the ig nition turne d on, yo u can s tart t he
"Auto -Chec k se qu ence" by pressing the
!SET !
button. You ca n pe rform an Auto-Check se­
quence when the veh icle is stationary and the
ignition is turned on or when t he veh icle is
moving slower than 3 mph (5 km/h).

The number of keys programmed to the vehi­
cle is also displayed. The disp lay
L2 3/3 indi­
cates that three keys have been programmed.
This allow s you to make sure you have re­
ceived all o f the keys when you purchase a
used vehicle .
For examp le, if you on ly receive two keys, you
should take those keys to your authori zed
Aud i dealer to have the missing key deactivat­
ed so it cannot be used . You should also re ­
po rt the m issing key to your insurance compa­
ny.
Calling up the driver information
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display, usually with a driver
message . The driver message display disap ­
pears after about
5 seconds. The driver mes­
sage can be displayed again by briefly press­
ing the
l SE Ti button.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the iSETi but ton briefly, you can
set threshold 1 of the speed warning while
you are dr iv in g r::.> page 94 . By mainta ining
p ressu re on the
iSET i button, you de lete the
warn ing threshold.

Depending on the vehicle equ ipment level,
you may choose between the quartz clock or
the GPS contro lled clock*
(!i in the radio or in
the MMI*. You can learn more about this in
the MMI manual or in the radio user's manual.
(D Tips
-When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the t ime, date, odome­
ter and temperature are displayed for an add itional 30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
I SET ! button r::.> page 11 wh ile the igni­
tion is switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only whe n the ignition is
on .
When the needle reaches the reserve mark

strument cluster display as well as the mes­
sage
Please refuel. This message is meant to
remind you to
refuel.
The tota l tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in c::>
page 290 .
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An ir­
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex­
haust system. The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged.

Odometer
The odometer indicates the distance driven.

The display of distance driven is shown in kilo­
meters "km" or in "m iles".

- Canada models -Kilometers
You can switch from kilometers to miles or
vise versa in the radio or in the MMI*. You can learn more about this in the MM
I manual or in
the radio user 's manual.
Odometer /trip odometer
T he odometer shows the total number of kilo­
meters or m iles that have been driven on the
vehicle.
The trip odometer shows the distance driven s ince it was last reset.
It can be used to meas­
ure short distances . The last digit shows dis­
tances of 100 meters or 1/10 of a mile.
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by pressing the reset button
10 .019 fig. 7.
Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
dEF will appear in the trip
odometer and w ill stay on. Contact your au­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the prob lem cor­
rected.

- When you switch off the ignition or open

EPC Electronic power control
Applies to veh icles: w ith gasoline engine
This warning/indicator Light monitors the
electronic power control .
The~ warning/indicator light (Electronic
Power Control) illuminates when you turn on
the ignit ion as a funct ion check .
(D Tips
If this warn ing/ indicator light illum inates
while yo u are driving , then there is a mal­
funct ion in the engine electronics. Have
the malfunct ion corrected as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized A udi dealer or
q ualified works hop.
W Glow plug system
Applies to veh icles: w ith diesel engine
The control Light illuminates when the glow
plug system is active .
If them indicator light illumi nates, the g low
plug system is act ive . You should start the en­
gine immediately after the ind icator light
swit ches off. The ind ic ator lig ht only i llum i­
na tes fo r approxim ate ly 1 second if the en­
gine is warm or if the outs ide temperature is
above 46 QF (8 QC).
(D Tips
- I f the glow plug indica tor ligh t illum i­
nates while dr iving, there is an eng ine
cont ro l malfunction. T he engine should
be checked immediate ly .
- If the ind icator light does not illuminate
at a ll when switching the ign ition on,
there may be a malfunction in the glow
plug system. The engine sho uld be
checked.
