Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light c::> page 18 and
the ABS warn ing illuminate
together there
may be a ma lfunction in the ABS, and there
may also be a malfunction in the brake system
itself

In the event of a malfunction in the brake
system
the warning/indicator light 1111
(USA models);II (Canada models) in the in­
strument cluster flashes. By pressing the
! SET !
button, you can bring up a dr iver message
which explains the malfunction in more de­
tail. Please note

Malfunction in the electron ic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a
malfunction in the EDL system
c::> page 197.
See your authorized Aud i dealer as soon as
possib le.
.&_ WARNING
-
- If the~ (USA models) l[!J (Canada
mode ls) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on while driving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You will
not have the protection ABS provides.
Contact your authorized Aud i dealer as
soon as poss ible.
- If the
1111 (USA models)/. (Canada
mode ls) brake system indicator light
turns on together with the ABS and ESC
indicator lights, the ABS/ ESC regu lating
function may have failed. Functions that
stabilize the vehicle are no longer availa­
ble. This could cause the vehicle to
swerve and increase the risk of sliding.
Drive caref ully to the nearest authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop
and have the malfunction corrected.
::\ii(®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
With the parking brake applied and the igni­
tion turned on, the. (USA models)/ . (Can­
ada models) warn ing/ indicator light illumi­
nates. After the ignition has been turned off,
the warn ing/ indicato r light continues to illu­
minate for about 30 seconds.
If the parking
brake is applied with the ignition turned off,
the warn ing/indicato r light illuminates for
about 30 seconds.
T he wa rning/i ndicator lig ht will go out when
the parking brake is released.
If the warning/indicator light flashes continu­
ously
after applying the pa rking brake, brak­
ing force is not sufficient to prevent the veh i­
cle from rolling unintentionally . Please note
the following:
- If the slope of the ground is too steep to
pa rk the vehicle, the additional drive mes­
sage appears Caution : Vehicle parked too
steep.
- In the event of a pa rking brake malfunction,
the yellow
IIJ symbo l appears in the instru­
ment cluster display and the driver message
Parking brake malfunction! is displayed.
Have the ma lfunction repa ired as soon as
possible by an authorized Audi dealer or any
other qualified workshop.
BRAKE/((D) Brake system
The warning/indicator light flashes if brake
fluid level is low, if there is an ABS system
malfunction or a parking brake malfunction.
The 1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
li ght illuminates when the ignition is turned
on. It goes out after the engine has been
started . This indicates that the brake warning
l ight is functioning properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a
malfunction in the electrical system. In this
case, contact an authorized Audi dealer. ..,.

A WARNING
- If the 11111 (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light
tu rns on together with the ABS and ESC
indicator lights, the ABS/ESC regu lating

wh ile you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low . If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
au thori zed Audi dealer o r qualified re pair
f acili ty and have the brake system in­
spected.
- Always keep in m ind tha t after several
brake applicat ions, yo u will need greater
pressure on the brake peda l to sto p your
vehicle. Do not re ly on stra ined brakes to
respond w ith maxim um stopp ing power
in critical situations. You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra distance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an accident.

The ignition key can on ly be removed with the
selector in this position. This and other mes­
sages are brought up if a function cannot be
carried out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the display, a driver
message is a lso displayed automatica lly.
F or example, the symbol fo r a problem with
engine o il pressu re . appea rs in the display .
The following message appears :
Turn off engine! Oil pre ssure too low
The driver message in the display goes out af­
ter about
5 seconds. The dr iver message can
be d isplayed again by briefly pressing the

If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a
driver message is also displayed automat ical­
ly .

The driver message disappears after a few
seconds. The driver message can be disp layed
again by briefly pressing the !SE T! button .

A red symbol means DANGER.

0 Alternator malfunction
If the . symbol in the instrument panel d is­
play flashes, then there is a malfunction in the
alternator or the vehicle electronics. A warn­
i ng to the driver w ill appear, too . The driver
warn ing goes out after about 5 seconds, but it
can be brought up at any time by pressing the
ISE TI button again .
Usually, you can still d rive to the next dealer­
ship . Turn off all but the most necessary elec­
tr ica l consumers, since these d ra in the ve hi­
cle's battery.

If the . warning symbo l (coolant system
malfunct io n) also lights up on the inst ru­
men t pa nel d uring the t rip

t hen you have to stop immediately and
turn off the eng ine. The coolant pump is

This reminder appears along with the l!I sym­
bol if the master key is removed from the ve­
hicle with the engine running. It is intended
to remind you (e.g. when changing drivers)
not to continue the journey without the mas­
ter key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle,
you cannot switch off the ignition after stop­
p in g the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again . You also cannot lock the vehicle
from the outside.
@9 Light/rain sensor defective
El Automatic headlights / automatic wipers
defective
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has
failed. For safety reasons the low beams are
turned on permanently with the switch in
AU­
T O . However, you can continue to turn the
lights on and off using the lig ht switch. In the
case of a defect in the rain sensor, the w ind­
shield w iper lever functions are st ill available.
H ave the light/ra in sensor checked as soon as
possible by an autho rized Aud i deale r.

the vehicle.

tor light turns on to indicate the location on
the vehicl e.
Vehicle lights: System fault!
If the message appears, there is a malfunc­
tion in the headlights or light switch.
Drive to your authorized A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected.
A WARNING
- Light bulbs are press urized and could ex­
plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious personal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
high-voltage section of gas discharge
(xenon) lights*. Failure to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury .

brake peda l travel, then one of the two brake

Low brak e flu id level
Malfunct ions can occur in the brake syste m if
the brake fl uid leve l is too low. The b rake fluid
l eve l is monito red electronically.
Brake boost er
The brake booster increases the pressure that
you generate w ith the brake pedal.

e rates while the eng ine is running or with the
i gnit ion sw itched on (hybr id dr ive*)~ .&,.
Brake lining wear statu s
Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the openings in the whee l. If neces­
sa ry, the wheel may be removed for this in­
spection

- You should perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of clean ing the brake
system on ly if road conditions permit.
Other road users must not be put at risk -
you may cause an acc ident!
- Before descending a steep grade, reduce speed and shift transmiss ion into a lower
gear or lower driving range. Do not ride
the brakes or hold the pedal down too long or too often. This could cause the
brakes to get hot and dimin ish b raking
efficiency.
- Do not "ride the brakes" by resting your
foot on the pedal when you do not intend
to brake. Th is may cause the b rakes to
overheat, premat ure wear and increased
stopp ing distance .
- Under certain climat ic and operating
c ondit ions such as passing through wa­
ter, driving in heavy rain or after wash ing
the vehicle, the effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced. In winter, ice can
accumulate on the brake pads, linings,
discs and drums. Carefully apply brakes

- Driving for an extended period of time on
salt-covered roads without using your
brakes can a lso affect braking efficiency.
Clean
off accumulated salt coating from
brake discs and pads with a few ca reful
brake applications.
- If you damage the front spoiler, or if you install a different spoiler, be sure the ai r
f low to the front brakes is not obst ruct­
ed. Otherw ise the bra ke system could
overhea t reducing the effectiveness of
the entire brake system .
- Failure of one b rake circuit will impair
the braking capab ility result ing in an in­
creased stopping distance. Avoid driving
the vehicle and have it towed to the near­
est a uthorized Audi dea ler or q ualified
workshop.
- Never let the vehicle roll to a stop with
the eng ine shut off .
- If the b rake booster is not working, the
brake peda l must be pressed considera­
bly harder to make up for the lack of
booster assistance.
Electromechanical
power assist, Dynamic
steering
The electromechonical power assist helps the
driver when steering.
Power s teer ing adap ts electronically based on
the ve hicle speed .
Indicator lights and messages

General information
The operation of the E lectronic Stabilization
Control (ESC) is expanded for operation away
from paved roads. In situations where slip or a
d ifferential locking function is required, the
offroad mode can be activated

Your Audi also has permanent all -wheel drive
in addit ion.
However, your Aud i is not a pure offroad vehi­
cle . It was not built for driving under extreme
conditions , e.g . for trips that are in the nature
of an expedition .
D riv e only on roads and off road sections
which match the design of your vehicle and
your abil ities a s a driver . Never take ri sks!
Before driving offro ad
- Check the engine oi l level, tire press ure,
coolant leve l, and the fluid level in the w ind­
shield washer reservo ir.
- Stow luggage items and other objects in the
l uggage compartment, and secure them
against slid ing around .
After driving offroad
- After trips offroad, remove any twigs and other foreign objects from the grill, the un­
derbody and the wheels. Pay specia l atten ­
t ion to fore ign ob jects (stones) which have
become lodged in the tire tread.
- Clean the body and the vehicle unders ide,
and inspect the veh icle for possible damage.
- Clean dirty w indows, headlamp lenses, rear
li ghts, and license plates .
- Perform a brake check (part icu larly after
trave lling through water) .
A WARNING
- Drive especially attentively and plan
ahead in difficult road conditions and
w hen offroad . Excess ive speed or incor-
-
rect mane uvers can cause injuries and
damage to the vehicle.
- Always adapt your speed and driving
style to road, offroad, traff ic, and weath­
er cond itions. Drive especially slowly off­
road when your v iew is restricted.
- Please be aware that in offroad mode,
particularly on a smooth and slippery
road , the whee ls may have an increased
tendency to sp in and the vehicle may
b reak away- dange r of skiddi ng!
- Stability is limited in the offroad mode .
