gage compartment and its contents must
always be kept in the vehicle. The veh icle
m ust not be operated w ithout the tire re­
pa ir set.
Charging the batteries
Applies to vehicles: with hybrid drive
The vehicle is equipped with two 12 volt bat ­
ter ies and a h igh voltage battery.
If the 12 volt batter ies are dead, they may be
charged with a charger or the vehicle may be
jump started with assistance from another ve­
hicle in the same way as a conventional vehi­
cle .
The same applies to the high voltage battery
if it is d ischarged . However, in this case, the
charg ing process is accompanied w ith mes­
sages in the inst rument cluste r display. The
i gnit ion m ust be switched on and all unneces­
sary electric components m ust be turned off.
The connections in the engine compartment
are used for both charging and jump starting
c::> page 244 or c::> page 283.
Vehicle not ready to start. See owner's
manual
This message appears if the high voltage bat­
tery charge level is too low. The vehicle can no
l onge r be started with its own power. The
high voltage battery must be charged with a
charger or the vehicle must be jump started
with the aid of another vehicle.
Afte r the connecting the cha rger or jumper ca­
b les, the ignition must be turned off for ap­
proximately two minutes and then turned on
again. After no more than one m inute, one of
the following indicator lights turns on in the instrument cluster d isp lay. Hybrid 105
II Charging battery. Please wait ...
If
the indicator light turns on and this mes­
sage appears, the high voltage battery is
charging or the vehicle is being jump started
with assistance from another vehicle.
If the 12 vo lt batteries are dead, the -
indicator light turns on. The charging proce­
dure takes longer in this case because the 12
vo lt batteries are charged first. The procedure
goes faster with the ignition switched off.
Vehicle ready to start.
This message appears if the charging proce­
dure was successfu l. The vehicle may be start­
ed again.
Battery could not be charged enough to
start vehicle.
This message appears if the charging proce­
dure was not successful or it was interrupted.
This may happen if the charger or the battery
in the veh icle that is assist ing is too weak.
If
the vehicle cannot be started, see an author­
ized repa ir facility for assistance .
(D Tips
- The charger should deliver a current of at
least
30 A. Otherwise charging the high
voltage battery will take considerably longer. A current between
50 A and 70 A
is ideal.
- The ve hicle that is assist ing should be
somewhat within the same vehicle class
when jump starting a vehicle. A smaller
vehicle's battery may be drained.
- After approximately
30 minutes, the
c harging procedure ends because the ig­
nition is automatically turned off.
If you
would like to continue to charge the bat­
tery, turn the ignition on again.

The adaptive cruise control system regulates
the speed and distance to the moving vehicle
ahead and accelerates/brakes automatically.

keep enough distance to a previously detected
moving vehicle up ahead, you must take con­

If adaptive cruise control is not shown in the
display, you can call it up with the

Based on the symbols in the display, you can
determine if the system is maintaining a dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead and what that dis­
tance is.
No vehicle -No vehicle ahead was detected.
White vehicle -A vehicle ahead was detected.
Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take ac­
tion

Both arrows on the scale © indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead. No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead. If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale.
The green zone on the scale shows the stored
distance. For information on changing the
stored distance, refer to <=:>
page 111. If the
distance selected is too close or may soon be­
come too close, the arrows move into the red
zone on the scale .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injuries.
- Pressing the
ISETI button when driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), will au- tomatically accelerate the vehicle to
20 mph (30 km/h), which is the mini­
mum speed that can be set.
(D Tips
- If you switch the ignition or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- The Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
is automatically turned on when the
adaptive cruise control is turned on. You
cannot switch the ESC into offroad mode
while the adaptive cruise control is
turned on

you to take action . This could happen, for ex­
ample, if braking by the adaptive cruise con ­
trol system is not enough to mai ntai n enough
distance to the vehicle ahead.

Automatic
transmission

Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected. The power is transferred
by a torque converter .
When a
mode rate d riv in g s ty le is used, the
transmission selects the most econom ica l
driving mode. It w ill then change up early and
delay the downshifts to g ive better fuel econ­
omy.
T he transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
spo rty driving sty le characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can a lso select the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ) c:> page 12 7.

D/S -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S pos ition, the transmission can be
operated either in the no rma l mode D or in
the sport mode S. To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the s uitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv ­
ing style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty dr iving .
The vehicle makes fu ll use of the engine's

power . Shifting may become noticeable when
accelerat ing . Hybrid drive*: electric driving is
not possible .
When the veh icle is stationary o r at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the lever to D/S out of N.

Automatic Shift Lock {ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
s itions w hen the ign ition is turned on . You
must p ress the brake pedal and t he release
button to select another position . As a re­

The Automatic Shift Lock only funct ions when
t h e ve hicle is stationary or at speeds be low
1 mph (2 km/h) .
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automat ic Shift Lock is automatically deact i­
vated in the N position .
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when it is moved through
the N pos ition (going from R to D/S) . The lock­
ing element w ill lock the selector lever if t he

lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 1 second, without the brake ped­
a l being pressed.
Release button
The release button on the selector lever pre­
vents the lever from being accidentally shifted
into certain positions. Pressing this button de­
activates the selector lever lock. Depending
on the direction of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different positions. The positions are
highlighted in the illustration ¢
fig. 132.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition
un less the se lector lever is in the P park posi­
tion . When the ign ition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P position.

Starting the engine

- Changed settings are activated when
parking system is switched on again.
- The settings are automatically stored
and ass igned to the remote control key.
Trailer hitch
Applies to vehicles: with Audi parking system plus w ith
rea rview camera a nd trailer hitch
For vehi cles with a facto ry installed trai ler
hitch, or a trai ler hitch installed according to
factory specifications, the parking system rear
sensors do not come on whenever you shift in­
to reverse gear or when you press the
P, #J\.
switch. Remember, there is no warning for
d istances to the rear . The front sensors re ­
main activated. The visual display switches to
the trailer towing mode. The picture from the
rearv iew camera will not show the orientation
l ines nor the blue su rfaces.
If you install a hitch yourself, th is function
may not work .
Error messages
Applies to vehicles: wi th Audi parking sys te m plus with
rearv iew camera
T he re is an error in the system if t he LED on
the
p, q~ switch is blinking and you hea r a con­
t in uous alarm for a few se conds after switch­
ing on the parking system or when the park­
ing system is already activated . Have yo ur au­
thorized Audi dea ler correct the error.
(D Tips
If the error is not corrected before you
switch off the ignition, when you switch on
the parking system again, the LED in the
Pw J\. switch will blink.
