When the wiper arms have reached a
vertical position, press the Start/Stop
button.
X Fold the wiper arm away from the
windshield until it engages.
Removing the wiper blades X
To bring the wiper blade into position
to be removed: hold the wiper arm firmly
with one hand. With the other hand, turn
the wiper blade in the direction of arrow
0027 beyond the point of resistance.
The wiper blade engages in the removal
position with an audible click.
X To remove a wiper blade: firmly press
release knob 0003and pull the wiper blade
upwards 0002.
Installing the wiper blades X
Push the new wiper blade in the direction
of arrow 0002onto the wiper arm until
tab 0003engages.
X Push the wiper blade out of the removal
position in the direction of arrow 0027beyond
the point of resistance.
The wiper blade disengages with an audible
click and is freely movable again.
X Make sure that wiper blade is seated
correctly.
X Fold the wiper arm back onto the

Problems with the windshield wipers

automatic climate control
The following contains instructions and
recommendations to enable you to get the
most out of your automatic climate control.
R Activate climate control using the 0006and
0007 buttons or the 0005button on the
control panel for the climate control. The
indicator lamps in the 0006and0007 or
0005 buttons light up.
R In automatic mode, you can also use the
000F button on the control panel for the climate control to set a climate mode
(FOCUS/MEDIUM/DIFFUSE). The
MEDIUM level is recommended.
R Set the temperature to 72 ‡ (22 †).
R Only use the defrosting function briefly
until the windshield is clear again.
R Only use air-recirculation mode briefly, e.g.
if there are unpleasant outside odors or
when in a tunnel. The windows could
otherwise fog up, since no fresh air is drawn
into the vehicle in air-recirculation mode. 142

Use the ZONE function to adopt the
temperature settings on the driver's side
for the front-passenger side as well.T he
indicator lamp in the 0004button goes out.
R Use the residual heat function if you want
to heat or ventilate the vehicle interior
when the ignition is switched off. The
residual heat function can only be activated
or deactivated with the ignition switched
off.
i During automatic engine switch-off, the
ECO start-stop function only operates at a
reduced capacity. If you require full climate
control capacity, the ECO start/stop
function can be deactivated by pressing the
ECO button (Y page 160). Operating the climate control

Switching climate control on/off
General notes G
WARNING
When the climate control system is switched
off, the outside air supply and circulation are
also switched off. Only choose this setting for
a short time when the retractable hardtop
(vario-roof) is closed. Otherwise, the windows
could fog up, impairing visibility and
endangering you and others.
i Switch on climate control primarily using
the 0006 button (Y page 144). Activating/deactivating X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To switch on: press the0006button on
the control panel for the climate control.
The indicator lamp in the 0006button lights
up. Airflow and air distribution are set to
automatic mode.
or
X Press the 0010button on the control panel
for the climate control.
The indicator lamp in the 0010button goes
out. The previously selected settings are
restored.
X To deactivate: press the0010button.
The indicator lamp in the 0010button lights
up. Activating/deactivating cooling with
air dehumidification
General notes G
WARNING
If you switch off the cooling function, the
vehicle will not be cooled when weather
conditions are warm. The windows can fog up
more quickly. This may prevent you from
observing the traffic conditions, thereby
causing an accident.
The cooling with air dehumidification function
is only available when the engine is running.
The air inside the vehicle is cooled and
dehumidified according to the temperature
selected.
Condensation may drip from the underside of
the vehicle when it is in cooling mode. This is
normal and not a sign that there is a
malfunction.
i The refrigerant that is used by the cooling
with air dehumidification does not contain
chlorofluorocarbons and therefore does
not damage the ozone layer. Operating the climate control systems

The indicator lamp in the 0007buttonlights

The indicator lamp in the 0007button goes
out. The cooling with air dehumidification
function has a delayed switch-off feature.
Problems with the "cooling with air
dehumidification" function When you press the
0007or0005 button, the
indicator lamp in the button flashes three
times or remains off .You can no longer switch
on the cooling with air dehumidification
function.
X Visit a qualified specialist workshop. Setting climate control to automatic

WARNING
If you switch off the cooling function, the
vehicle will not be cooled when weather
conditions are warm. The windows can fog up
more quickly. Window fogging may impair
visibility and endanger you and others. In automatic mode, the set temperature is
maintained automatically at a constant level.
The system automatically regulates the
temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow
and the air distribution.
Automatic mode will achieve optimal
operation if cooling with air dehumidification
is also activated. If necessary, cooling with air
dehumidification can be deactivated.
X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X Set the desired temperature.
X To activate: press the0006button.
The indicator lamp in the 0006button lights
up. Automatic air distribution and airflow
are activated.

Adjusting the climate mode settings
You can select the followin gclimate mode
settings in automatic mode:
FOCU Shigh airflow that is set slightly
cooler
MEDIUM medium airflow, standard setting
DIFFUSE low airflow that is set slightly warmer and with less draft 000F

X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X Press the 0006button.
X Press the 000Fbutton repeatedly until the
desired climate mode appears in the

driver's and front-passenger sides.

X Turn controls 0002or0017 clockwise or
counter-clockwise.

Only change the temperature setting in

airflow is always directed through the side
air vents. The side air vents can only be
closed when the controls on the side air

The indicator lamp in the 0004button goes
out. The temperature setting for the
driver's side is adopted for the front-
passenger side. Defrosting the windshield
Example:

You can use this function to defrost the
windshield or to defrost the inside of the
windshield and the side windows.
Switch off the "defrosting" function as soon
as the windshield is clear again.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To activate: press the000Cbutton.
The indicator lamp in the 000Cbutton lights
up.
The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
R high airflow
R high temperature
R air distribution to the windshield and
front side windows
R air-recirculation mode off

The indicator lamp in the 000Cbutton goes
out. The previously selected settings are
restored. Air-recirculation mode remains
deactivated.

automatic mode.

X Turn the temperature controls to the left or
to the right on the control panel for the
climate control or clockwise or counter-
clockwise.

X Press the 001Cor001B button. MAX COOL maximum cooling
The MAX COOL function is only available in
vehicles for the USA. MAX COOL is only operational when the
engine is running.
X To activate: press the0002button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights up.
X To activate: press off-road button 0002
again.
The indicator lamp goes out. The previously
selected settings are restored. When you activate MAX COOL, climate
control switches to the following functions:
R
maximum cooling
R maximum airflow
R air-recirculation mode on Defrosting the windows
Windows fogged up on th einside X
Activate the cooling with air
dehumidification function 0007.
X Activate automatic mode 0006.
X If the windows continue to fog up, activate
the defrosting function (Y page 146).
i You should only select this setting until
the windshield is clear again.

Activate the windshield wipers.
X Press the 001Abutton repeatedly until the
001F or001E symbol appears in the
display.
i You should only select this setting until
