- When switching the ignition on, the nee­
dles in the instrument cluster move up­
ward briefly.
- The illumination for the instrument clus ­
ter lights up whenever you switch on the
i gnition with the
vehicle headlights off .
As the daylight fades, the instrument
cluster illumination likewise dims auto­
matically a nd will go out completely
when the outside light is very low. This
feature is meant to remind you to switch
on the head lights when outside light
conditions become poor .
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes) .

If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the br eak-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area, move these­
lector lever to position "D (Drive)" or ease
your foot off the acce lerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle should only briefly
be in the red zone: you could damage your
engine! The beg inning of the red zone var­
i es depending on the engine.

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

If you have a malfunction in the safety sys ­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acci­
dent.
~ Safety belt warning light
App lies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts.
The warning light . comes on for a few sec ­
onds after the ignition is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety be lt.

0 Generator
This warning/indicator light detects a mal­
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system .
The. warning/ind icator light illuminates
when yo u switch on the ignit ion and must go
out after the engine has started .
I f the . warning/indicator light illum inates
while you are driving, yo u should contact you r
author ized Audi dealer. Since the veh icle bat­
tery is discha rging, you should switch
off any
unnecessary electrical consumers (for exam ­
p le, the air conditioner).
~ Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair.
I f the . symbol appears in the display and
flashes, the oil pressure is too low . In addition
to the symbo l, the following message a lso ap­
pears in the d isp lay:
S wi tch off en gin e! Oil pr essure is t oo low
• Pull off the road and stop the vehicle .
• Shut the engine down.
• Check the eng ine oil level¢
page 185.
• Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
sistance if necessary .
Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil level is too low , top off oil to
t h e proper level

Engine oil leve l OK
If the . symbol starts flashing again even
though the eng ine oil level checks OK on the
dipstick,
do not start dri ving again and d o
not l et th e engine run at idl e.

- The engin e oil pr essure symbol. is

- The yellow oil le vel warning indication

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
When the. symbol in the d isplay flashes,
then either the engine coolant
temperature i s
too high, or the coolant
level is too low . In ad­
dition to the symbo l, the following message
also appears in the d isp lay:
Swit ch off en gin e and chec k coolant level
• Pull off the road and stop the veh icle.
• Turn
off the engine.
• Check coolant level

• Continue driv ing on ly after the engine cool-

Bi) Fuel supply too low
When the (g symbol illuminates, this means
there are about 1.9 gallons (7 liters) of fuel
left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

If the symbol lights up, even when there is
ample fuel in the tank, and the text

system. Contact a qualified workshop to have
the fault rectified.

Windshield washer fluid level too
low
If the Ill symbol illuminates, add w indshield
washer f luid to the washer system

® Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you
when a vehicle light bulb has become defec­
tive.
If a defect ive bulb has been detected by the
system or a light bu lb burns out, the
fsl sym­
bol with a message appears in the disp lay to
tell you wh ich bu lb is burnt out and where it is
l ocated. For example:
Rear left turn signal
After 5 seconds, the message disappears. If
you want to recall the message into the dis­
p lay, press the CH ECK button

There are three reasons why the defective
bulb message would appear in the display:
- The light bulb has burnt out

- The fuse is "blown" Q page 228, Replacing
fuses.
- The wire connection to the light bu lb is de-
fective.
H ave the bu lb rep laced or the connection re­
pa ired by your a uthorized Audi Service depart­
ment.
A WARNING
- Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious pe rsonal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
h igh-voltage sect ion of gas discharge
(xenon) lamps. Fa iling to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury!
BRAKE LIGHT t<® > Brake light defective
In case of a ma lfunction or component fail-
ure, the symbo l (USA models)/
(@ ll ing electrical components should be checked,
repaired or replaced, as necessary:
- Brake light bulbs
- All wir ing connections
- Brake light switch
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler for assis­
tance if necessary.
(D Tips
The brake light sw itch is on ly inspected as
part of the functional check after the en­
gine is started.
i,0 Headlight range control defective
Applies to vehicles: wit h dynamic headlight range adjust­
ment
If the II illuminates, the dynamic headlight
range control is no longer working properly.
Have the system checked and repaired at your
authorized Audi dealer .
rsO Adaptive light defective
Applies to vehicles: with Ada ptive Lig ht
rm Adaptive light defective
When this symbol rm illuminates, it means
that Adaptive Light is defect ive. Go to a qua li­
fied workshop to have the headlights or the
control unit for the Adaptive Light repaired.

Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed
accordingly. The display works in two stages :
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a serv­
ice reminder appears in the display when you
turn on the ignition.
After about
S seconds the display switches
back to normal. The distance and time re­
maining are updated each time the ignition is
turned on until the date due for service is reached .
Service due
When the due date for service is reached , the
message
Service due! appears in the instru­
ment cluster immediately after you turn on
the ignition. Additionally, a warning tone
sounds . After about
S seconds the display
switches back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due,
can be shown in the instrument cluster by se­
lecting the service interval display. Select
Check > Service > Oil change or Service by us­
ing the
! RESET I button and the rocker switch
c;, page25, fig.12.
Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer will reset the cor­
responding service schedule after performing the appropr
iate service on your vehicle. You
also have the possibility to reset the oil
change schedule after hav ing performed an
oil change according to Aud i specifications.
- Switch the ignition on.
- Pull the knob¢ fig. 19. The message.

button is not pulled within 5 seconds, the
disp lay reset mode closes.
(D Note
If yo u disconnect the battery terminals, no
ca lculations can be made for the service
interval display during this time and no
service reminder will appear. Remember
that observing the proper service intervals
is vitally important to extending the life of
your vehicle, particularly the engine, and maintaining its value . Even if the mileage
driven is low, the maximum period of one
year from one service to the next must not
be exceeded.
(D Tips
-Do not reset the display between oil
changes, otherwise the display will be in­
correct.
- The information in the Service Reminder
remains stored even when the vehicle
bat tery is disconnec ted.

Tire service life
The service life of tires depends on a lot of
different things including proper installation
and balancing, correct tire pressure and driv­
ing style.

Tread Wear Indicator (TWI)
The original tires on your vehicle have
1/16 inch (1.6 mm) high "wear indicators"
c::> fig . 144 running across the tread. Depend­
i ng on the make, there will be six to eight of
them evenly p laced around the tire. Marks on
the tire sidewa ll (for example "TWI" or other
symbols) indicate the positions of the tread
wear ind icators . Worn t ires must be replaced .

Tire pressure
Incorrect tire pressure causes premature wear
and can cause sudden t ire blow-out. For th is
reason, tire pressure must be checked at least
once a month

Driving style
Driving fast around curves, heavy acceleration
and hard braking increase tire wear.
Rotating tires for more even wear
For all four tires on your vehicle to have the
same service life, we recommend that the
front and rear tires are rotated according to
the tire manufacturer's suggested tire rota­
tion intervals. Please remember the follow­
ing :
- Tire rotation intervals may differ from the
vehicle service interva ls outlined in your
Warranty
& Maintenance Booklet.
- The longer one tire is used in one location
on the vehicle, the more it wears at certain
points; therefore, we recommend that you
follow the tire manufacturer's suggested
tire rotation intervals .
- Vehicles with front-wheel drive experience
more tread wear on the front wheels com­
pa red to all-wheel drive (quattro ®).
- Please rotate tires as shown

Wheel balancing
The wheels on new vehicles are balanced.
However, various situations during everyday
driving can cause them to become unbal ­
anced, re sulting in vibrat ions you can usually
feel through the steer ing wheel.
Unbalanced wheels must be rebalanced to
avoid excessive wear on steering, suspension
and tires. A whee l must also be rebalanced
when a new tire is installed.
Incorrect wheel alignment
Incorrect wheel alignment can cause exces ­
sive tire wear, impairing the safety of the veh i­
cle. If tires show excessive wear, have the
whee l alignment checked by an authori zed
Audi dealer or qualif ied workshop.
all-wheel drive
Vehicles with quattro ® mus t always have tires
of the same size, construction and tread type .
