BRAKE/ ((D) Brake system
This warning/indicator Light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
If the - (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) symbo l flashes in the display with the
parking brake released, there is a malfunction
in the brake system . In addition to the sym­
bol, one of two messages appears in the dis­
play:
Stop veh icle and chec k bra ke fl uid le vel
Stab ilization pr ogram and AB S fau lt! See

USA models: if there is a malfunct ion in the

Applies to vehicles: with a utomat ic head lights
The indicator light indicates a defect in the
automatic headlights/automatic wiper sys­
tem .
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has
failed . For safety reasons, the low beams are
turned on permanently with the switch in
A U­
TO . However , you can continue to turn the
lights on and off using the light switch . In the
case of a defect in the rain sensor, the w ind­
shie ld wiper lever functions are sti ll available.
Have the light/rain sensor checked as soon as
possible at an authorized Audi dealer.

App lies to vehicles: with Audi magnetic ride
The indicator light monitors vehicle damping .
The indicato r light B illum inates when the ig­
n it ion is switched o n as a funct ion check.
(j) Tips
If the ind icator lamp illum inates while you
are driving, there is a malfunct ion in the
veh icle damping. The chass is should be in­
spected immediately by an authorized
Audi dea ler .
:::/, Rear spoiler
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electrically retractable rear spoiler.
The warning/indicator light l'J has the fol­
l owing f un ctions:
- It comes on for about 3 seconds as a func­
t ion check when the ignition is sw itched on .
- It comes on if there is a malfunction in the
electrically retractable rear spoiler .

¢ Q Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever you use the left II or the r ight II
turn s ignal, the indica tor light blinks. When
you use the emergency flasher, both indicator lights flash .
If one of the turn signa l light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink twice as fast as nor­
mal.

To store maximum speed
> Turn off the ignit ion.
> Briefly press the button in the instrument

currently stored maximum speed appears in
the display
or the crossed out symbol for
warning threshold 2, if no max imum speed
was set previously.

change the set value. Values run up or dow n
i n steps of 6.2 mph (10 km/h).
To delete maximum speed
> Turn off the ignit ion .

A few seconds after the adjustment is com­
pleted, the illumination for the odometer and
the dig ital clock will go out.

Cruise control
Switching the system on
The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h) .

The display may vary depending on the type of
display in your vehicle. The indicator light
M;ll)~14 (US model)/ . (Canadian model) will
also light up in the instrument cluster .
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on. You are
always responsib le for your speed and

the distance between your vehicle and
other vehicles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traff ic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, grave l, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of acc ident .
- Turn off the cruise control temporari ly
when entering turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones .
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because t he cr uise con trol is overridden
by the driver's acce lerat ion.
(D Tips
- Vehicles with manual t ransmission: You
can attain the set speed only if the cur­
r ently e ngaged gear a llows i t and the en­
gine i s not stressed. Shift ing to a h igher
or lower gear p romp tly will allow t he en­
gine to run smoothly.
- The cruise cont ro l cannot main tain a
constant speed when driving downhill.
The vehicle will accelerate unde r its own
weig ht. Downsh ift to a lower gear or use
the brakes to slow down.
Changing speed
"' Press lever in the 0 or 0 direction
i=> page 76, fig . 75 to increase or decrease
you r speed .
"' Re lease the lever to save that speed.
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down
to inc rease your speed, e.g . if yo u want to
pass someone . The speed you saved ea rlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­
ator peda l.
If , however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mph ( 10 km/h) for longe r than 5 minutes,
the cruise cont ro l w ill tu rn off tempora rily .
The symbol will go o ut but the saved speed
will be retained .

Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
"' Turn on the ignition.
"' Pull lever into position

increase or decrease your speed.

This function makes it possible, for example,
to save the speed you want before dr iving on
the highway. Once on the h ighway, act ivate

Switching the system off
Temporary deactivat ion
"' Press the brake pedal, or
"' Keep the cl utch pedal pressed down longer ,
or
"' Press the lever into position @(not clicked
into place)

"' Drive for longer than 5 minutes at more
than 5 mph (10 km/h) above the stored
speed.
Switching off completely
"' Press lever into position @(clicked into
place), or
"' Switch the ignit io n off.
The system retains the saved speed if you de­
activate the cruise control temporar ily. To re­
sume the saved speed, re lease the brake or
clutch pedal and pull the lever to position
(D.
Switching the ignit ion off erases the saved
speed.
A WARNING
You shou ld only return to the saved speed
if it is not too fast for the current traffic
conditions -ris k of an accident!

b le to start the engine with the selector lever

When parking on level gro und, it is sufficient
to p lace the selector lever in
P. On a steeply
sloping road, yo u should first app ly the park­
ing b rake firm ly and then place the selector
l ever in
P. This way, yo u do not overload the
pawl mechanism and it is eas ier to move the
selector lever out of
P .
A WARNING
- Never leave you r vehicle with the eng ine
running wh ile in gear . If you must leave
yo ur vehicle with the engine running, set
the parking bra ke and engage the pa rk
lock.
- Whe n the engine is running and the
t ransmission is in gear (D,
5 or R) or in
"tiptronic" mode, it is essentia l that you
stop the vehicle with the footbrake .
When idling, the t ransmission of power
does not stop completely- the vehicle
"creeps" .
- Do not accelerate when you change the
selector lever position with the vehicle
stationary and the engine r unning -risk
of an accident!
- Never place the selector lever in the R or
N position while the vehicle is moving -
risk of a n accide nt!
- If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop
wh ile on an incl ine, keep the foot brake
depressed all the way down so tha t the
vehicle does not start to roll backward .
You should never hold the vehicle using
the clu tch if you are going to be stopped

on an incl ine. If you do, the cl utch w ill
start to slip when it ove rheats ca used by
the constant overload. This is dangerous because if the vehicle starts to roll back­
ward, you co uld cause an acc iden t. If the
clutch should start to s lip, you w ill feel
the vehicle "jerk" and the se le ctor lever
disp lay w ill st art bl ink ing .
- Before driving down a steep slope, re­
duce your speed and shift i nto a lowe r
gea r with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the bra kes o r apply the bra ke
pe dal too often or too long. Const ant
brak ing c auses the brakes to overheat
and substantially reduces b raking per ­
formance, increases braking d istance or
causes complete fa il ur e of the brake sys ­
tem.
Hill Descent Assist
App lies to vehicles : wit h S t ronic
Hill Descent Assist helps the driver when driv­
ing down inclines .
Hill Descent Assis t is activ ate d by pressing the
brake while descending when the se lec tor lev ­
er is in D/S. The
5 tronic transmission auto­
matically shifts down to a gea r su itable for
the incline. H ill Descent Ass ist attempts to
maintai n the current veh icle speed w hen the
braking occurs, as far as physical and techn i­
ca l limits allow. It may be necessary to adjust
the speed using the brakes .
Hill Descent Assist sw itches off when the in­
cli ne leve ls out o r when the gas peda l is p ress ­
ed.
On vehicles with cruise control *

Hill Descent Assist is also act ivated when the
speed is set .
A WARNING
Hill Descent Ass ist cannot overcome physi­
cal limitations, so it may not be poss ible to
maint ain a constant vehicle speed under
