Proper adjustment of head restraints
Correctly adjusted head restraints are an im­
portant part of your vehicle's occupant re­
straint system and can help to reduce the risk of injuries in accident situations.

The head restraints must be correctly adjust­
ed to achieve the best protection.
~ For adjustable head restraints: adjust the
head restraint so the upper edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head. If that is not possible, try to adjust the head re­
straint so that it is as close to this position as possible

&_ WARNING
Driving without head restraints or with
head restraints that are not properly ad­
justed increases the risk of serious or fatal
neck injuriy dramatically. To help reduce
the risk of injury:
- Always drive with the head restra ints in
place and properly adjusted.
- Every person in the vehicle must have a
properly adjusted head restraint.
- Always make sure each person in the ve­
hicle properly adjusts their head re­
straint. Each head restraint must be ad­
justed according to occupants' size so
that the upper edge is as even w ith the
top of the person's head, but no lower
th an eye level and so it is as close to the
back of to the head as possible.
- Never attempt to adjust head restraint
wh ile driving. If you have driven
off and must adjust the driver headrest for any
reason, first stop the vehicle safely be­
fore attempting to adjust the head re­ straint .
- Ch ildren must always be properly re­
strained in a child restraint that is appro­
priate for their age and size

· Examples of improper seating positions
The occupant restraint system can only re­
duce the risk of injury if vehicle occupants are
properly seated .
Improper seating positions can cause serious
injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are properly positioned on the body . Improper seating positions reduce the
effectiveness of safety belts and will even in­
crease the risk of injury and death by moving
the safety belt to critical areas of the body.
Improper seating posi tions also increase the
risk of serious injury and death when an air­
bag deploys and strikes an occupant who is
not in the proper seating position . A dr iver is
responsible for the safety of all vehicle occu­
pants and especially for children. Therefore :
~ Never allow anyone to assume an incorrect
seating position when the vehicle is being
used

The following bullets list only some sample
positions that will increase the risk of serious
injury and death. Our hope is that these exam­
ples will make you more aware of seating po­
sitions that are dangerous.
Therefore , whenever the vehicle is
moving:
- never stand up in the vehicle
- never stand on the seats
- never kneel on the seats
- never ride with the seatback reclined
- never lie down on the rear seat
- never lean up against the instrument panel
- never s it on the edge of the seat
- never sit sideways
- never lean out the window

-never put you r feet out the window
- never put your feet on the instrument panel
- never rest your feet on the seat cushion o r
back of the seat
- never ride in the footwe ll
- never ride in the cargo area

A WARNING
Always make sure that the knee airbag can
inflate without interference. Objects be­
tween yourse lf and the airbag can increase
the risk of injury in an acc ident by interfer­
ing w ith the way the a irbag deploys or by
being p ushed into you as the airbag de­
ploys.
- No persons (ch ild ren) or animals should
ride in the footwell in front of the pas­
senger seat. If the airbag deploys, t his
c an res ult in serious or fat al inju ries.
- No objects of any k ind shou ld be carried
in t he footwe ll area in front of the driv­
er's or passenger's seat. Bul ky objec ts
(shopping bags, for example) can ham ­
per or prevent p roper deployment of the
airbag. Small objects can be thrown
thro ugh the vehicle if the airbag deploys
and injure you or your passengers.

Pedal area
Pedals
The pedals must always be free to move and
must never be interfered with by a floor mat
or any other object.
Make sure that a ll peda ls move free ly without
interfe rence and that nothing prevents them
from return ing to their orig inal positions .
Only use floor mats t hat Leave t he pedal area
free and can be secured with floor mat fasten­ ers .
If a brake circ uit fai ls, increased brake pedal
trave l is required to b ring the vehicle to a f ull
stop.
A WARNING
Pedals that cannot move free ly can cause
Loss of vehicle control and increase the risk
of ser ious injury.
- Never p lace any objects in the driver's
footwell. An object cou ld get into the
pe dal area and inte rfe re with pedal func­
tion. In case of sudden brak ing o r an ac­
cident, yo u wo uld not be able to b rake or
accelerate!
- Always ma ke sure tha t no thing can f all
or move into the driver's footwel l.
Floor mats on the driver side
Always use floor mats that can be securely
attached to the floor mat fasteners and do
not in terfere with the free movement of the
pedals.

A WARNING ,~
Heavy loads will influence the way your ve­
hicle handles. To help reduce the r isk of a
loss of control leading to ser ious personal
injury:
-Always keep in m ind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the cen­
ter of g ravity can also cause changes in
vehicle handling:
- Always distribute the load as even ly as
possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in
the luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Ax le Weight Rat­
ing or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
specified on the safety compliance stick­
er on the left door jamb. Exceeding per­ missible we ight standards can cause the
vehicle to slide and handle differently .

A WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas
from be ing drawn into the veh icle, always
keep the rear lid closed while dr iving.
- Never transport objects larger than those fitting completely into the luggage
area because the rear lid cannot be fully
cl osed.
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear
lid open, observe the follow ing notes to
reduce the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument
panel,
- Sw itch off the air recircu lation,
- Set the fresh ai r fan to the h ighes t
speed .
A WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all win­
dows and the rear lid are securely closed
and locked to reduce the risk of injury
when the veh icle is not being used.

-After closing the rear lid, always make
sure that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the rear lid left open. A
child could crawl into the vehicle through
the luggage compartment and close the
rear lid becoming trapped and unable to
get o ut. Being trapped in a vehicle can
lead to serious personal injury.
- Never let ch ildren play i n or around the
veh icle .
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment. Vehicle occupants must
always be prope rly restra ined in one of
the vehicle 's seating pos it ions .

- Air circulation helps to reduce window
fogging. Stale a ir escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel, on the
left side of the luggage compartment. Be sure to keep these s lots free and
open.
- The tire pressure m ust correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the
tire pressure label. The tire pressure la ­
bel is located on the driver's side B-pillar.
The tire pressure label lists the recom­
mended co ld tire inflation pressures for
the vehicle at its maximum capacity
we ight and the tires that were on your
vehicle at the t ime it was manufactured .

ma l load cond itions, please see chapter
i=>page 200.
Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with
four tie-downs to secure luggage and other
items.
Use the t ie-downs to secure your cargo prop­
erly

In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi-
cle w ill become heavy missiles that can cause .,.

Always wear safety belts!
Wearing safety belts correctly saves lives!
This chapter explains why safety belts are nec­
essary, how they work and how to adjust and
wear them correctly .
.. Read all the information that follows and
heed all of the instructions and WARNINGS.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death.
- Safety belts are the single most effective
means available to reduce the risk of se­
rious injury and death in automobile acci­
dents. For your protection and that of
your passengers, always correctly wear
safety belts when the vehicle is moving.
- Pregnant women, injured, or physically
impaired persons must also use safety
belts. Like all vehicle occupants, they are
more likely to be seriously injured if they
do not wear safety belts. The best way to
protect a fetus is to protect the mother -
throughout the entire pregnancy.
Number of seats
Your Audi TT Coupe has two seating positions in the front and two height-limited seating
positions in the rear. Each seating position has
a safety belt. The rear seat area in your Audi
TT Coupe does not have enough room for pas­
sengers of all sizes. For reasons of safety, no
person taller than 4'11" (1.S meters) should
ever ride in the rear seat area.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death. -
Never strap more than one person, in­
cluding small children, into any belt.
It is
especially dangerous to place a safety belt over a child sitting on your lap.
- Never let more people ride in the vehicle
than there are safety belts available.
- Be sure everyone riding in the vehicle is
properly restrained with a separate safe­
ty belt or child restraint.
- Persons taller than 4'11" (1.5 m) as well
as children in booster seats who are too
close to the rear window and roof can
suffer severe head and neck injuries
when the rear lid is closed or in a crash .
- The minimum clearance between the passenger's heads and the rear window
must never -under any circumstances -
be less that 1 inch (2.5 cm.) when the
passengers sit fully upright.
- Always make sure that rear seat passen­
gers cannot be struck when the rear lid is
closed.
,! Safety belt warning light
Your vehicle has a warning system for the
driver and front seat passenger to remind you
about the importance of buckling-up.

Before driving off, always:
" Fasten your safety belt and make sure you
wear it properly .
.. Make sure that your passengers also buckle
up and properly wear their safety belts.
.. Protect children with a child restraint sys-
tem appropriate for the size and age.

forces on the body more "tolerable" and less likely to cause injury.
Although these examples are based on a fron­
tal collision , safety belts can also substantial­
ly reduce the risk of injury in other kinds of
crashes. So, whether you're on a long trip or
just going to the corner store, always buckle
up and make sure others do, too. Accident sta­
tistics show that vehicle occupants properly
wearing safety belts have a lower risk of being
injured and a much better chance of surviving
an accident . Properly using safety belts also
greatly increases the ability of the supplemen­
tal airbags to do their job in a collision. For
this reason, wearing a safety belt is legally re­
quired in most countries including much of
the United States and Canada.
Although your Audi is equipped with airbags ,
you still have to wear the safety belts provid­
ed. Front airbags, for example, are activated
only in some frontal collisions. The front air­
bags are not activated in all frontal collisions,
in side and rear collisions, in roll overs or in
cases where there is not enough deceleration
through impact to the front of the vehicle .
The same goes for the other airbag systems in
your Audi. So, always wear your safety belt
and make sure everybody in your vehicle is
properly restrained!
Important safety instructions about
safety belts
Safety belts must always be properly posi­
tioned across the strongest bones of your
body.
.,. Always wear safety belts as illustrated and
described in this chapter.
.,. Make sure that your safety belts are always
ready for use and are not damaged.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them

personal injury and death. Safety belts can
work only when used correctly .

-Always fasten your safety belts correctly
before driving off and make sure all pas­
sengers are properly restrained.
- For maximum protection, safety belts
must always be positioned correctly on
the body .
- Never strap more than one person, in­ cluding small children, into any single
safety belt.
- Never place a safety belt over a child sit­
ting on your lap.
-Always keep feet in the footwell in front
of the seat while the vehicle is being driv­
en.
- Never let any person ride with feet on
the instrument panel or sticking out the
window or on the seat.
- Never remove a safety belt while the ve­
hicle is moving . Doing so will increase
your risk of being injured or killed .
- Never wear belts twisted.
- Never wear belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your clothing, such as
eye glasses, pens, keys, etc., as these
may cause injury .
- Never wear the shoulder part of the belt
under your arm or otherwise out of posi­
tion .
- Several layers of heavy clothing may in­
terfere with correct positioning of belts and reduce their effectiveness .
- Always keep belt buckles free of anything
that may prevent the buckle from latch­
ing securely.
- Never use comfort clips or devices that
create slack in the shoulder belt. Howev­
er, special clips may be required for the
correct use of some child restraint sys­
tems .
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat
hardware.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in an
accident. Inspect belts regularly. If web-

- To reduce the risk of injury when the air­
bags inflate, the driver and passengers
must always sit in an upright position,
must not lean against or place any part
of the ir body too close to the area where
the a irbags are located .
- Occupants who are unbelted, out of posi ­
t ion or too close to the airbag can be se­
riously injured by an airbag as it unfolds
with great force in the blink of an eye

A child in a rearward -facing child sa fety

w ill be seriously injured and can be ki lled if
the front airbag inflates - even wit h an Ad­
vanced Airbag System.

force and w ill smash the ch ild safety seat
and child against the backrest, ce nter
arm rest, door o r roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional circ umstan­
ces and the

light does not come on and stay on, im­
med iately install the rea r-facing child
safety seat in a rear seating po sition and
have the airb ag sys tem inspec ted by you r
Audi dealer .
A WARNING

Never hold things in you r hands o r on
your lap when the veh icle is in use.

bags during braking or other sudden ma­
neuver and become dangerous p rojec­
tiles that can cause ser ious personal in­
jury if the a irbags inf late .

phone b ra ck ets, large, heavy or bulky ob­
jects) on the doors, ove r o r ne ar the are a
marked "AIRBAG" on the s teer ing whee l,
instr ument panel, sea t bac krests o r be ­
tween those areas and yourself. These
objects could ca use in jury in a crash, es­
pecially when the airbags inflate.
- Never recline the front passenger 's seat
to transport objects. Items can a lso
move into the area of the s ide airbag or
the front a irbag during braki ng or in a
sudden maneuve r. Objects near the air­
bags can become projectiles and cause
in jur y, partic ularly when the seat is re­
clined.
- Never tilt the front passenger seat back­
rest forwar d w hen the vehi cle is moving.
An in flating airbag w il l force the ba ck­
rest backwar d an d can injure rear seat o c­
cupants.
A WARNING
=
The fine dust create d when air bags deploy
can cause breathing prob lems fo r people
with a history of asthma or other breath­
i ng cond itions.
- To reduce the risk of breathing problems ,
those with asthma or other respiratory
conditions shou ld get fresh air right
away by getting o ut o f the veh icle or
open ing windows or doors.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags
deploy , wash your hands and face with
mild soap and wate r before eating .
- Be ca reful not to get the dust into your
eyes, o r into any c uts or sc ratches .

Important safety instructions on the
side airbag system
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. Al­
ways properly wear safety belts and ride in a
proper seating position.
There is a lot that you and your passengers
must know and act accordingly to help the
safety belts and airbags do their job to pro­
vide supplemental protection.
& WARNING
An inflating side airbag can cause serious
or fatal injury. Improperly wearing safety
belts and improper seating positions in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury
and death whenever a vehicle is being
used.
- In order to reduce the risk of injury when
the supplemental side airbag inflates:
- Always sit in an upright position and
never lean against the area where the
supplemental side airbag is located.
- Never let a child or anyone else rest
their head against the side trim panel
in the area where the supplemental
side airbag inflates.
-Always make sure that safety belts are worn correctly,
- Do not let anyone sitting in the front
seat put their hand or any other parts
of their body out of the window.
-Always make sure that the side airbag can inflate without interference.
- Never install seat covers or replace­
ment upholstery over the front seat­
backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
deploy.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer. -
Objects between you and the airbag can
increase the risk of injury in an accident
by interfering with the way the airbag
unfolds or by being pushed into you as
the airbag inflates.
- Never place or attach accessories or
other objects (such as cup holders, tel­
ephone brackets, or even large, bulky
objects) on the doors, over or near the
area marked "AIRBAG" on the seat backrests.
- Such objects and accessories can be­ come dangerous projectiles and cause
injury when the supplemental side air­
bag deploys.
- Never carry any objects or pets in the
deployment space between them and
the airbags or allow children or other passengers to travel in this position.
-Always use the built-in coat hooks only for lightweight clothing. Never leave any
heavy or sharp-edged objects in the
pockets that may interfere with side air­
bag deployment and can cause personal
injury in an accident.
- Always prevent the side airbags from be­
ing damaged by heavy objects knocking
against or hitting the sides of the seat­
backs.
- The airbag system can only be triggered
once. If the airbag has been triggered,
the system must be replaced by an au­
thorized Audi dealership.
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc.) to
the original seat covers or to the seam in
the area of the side airbag module must always be repaired immediately by an au­
thorized Audi dealer.
- If children are seated improperly, their
risk of injury increases in the case of an
accident ~
page 130, Child Safety.
-Never attempt to modify any compo­
nents of the airbag system in any way .
- In a side collision, side airbags will not
function properly if sensors cannot cor­ rectly measure increasing air pressure in-
side the doors when air escapes through ..,.

In o rder for the airbag to offer protection, it is
important t hat all vehicle occupants, especia l­
l y any children, who must be in the front seat
because of exceptional circumstances, be
pro perly restrained and as far away from the
airbag as poss ible. By keep ing room between
the child's body and the front of the passen­
ger c om partment, the airbag can inflate com­
p letely and provide supp lemental p rotection
in certa in frontal col lis ions.
A WARNING
Not using a booster seat, us ing the boos­
ter seat improperly, incorrect ly installing a
booster seat or using the vehicle safety
belt improperly increases the risk of seri­
ous personal injury and death in a collision
or other emergency s ituation. To help re­
duce the risk of ser ious personal injury
and/or death:
- The shoulder be lt must lie as close to the
center of the child's co llar bone as poss i­
ble and must lie and snug on the upper
body.
It must never lie across the throat
o r neck. The lap belt must l ie across the
pelvis and never across the s tomach o r
abdomen. Make sure the belt lies flat
and snug. Pull on the be lt to tighten if
necessary.
- Failure to properly route safety belts
over a child's body will cause severe inju­
ries in an acc ident or other emergency
situation

-Children on the front seat of any car,
even with Advanced A irbags, can be seri­
ous ly injured or even killed when an a ir­
bag inflates.
- Never let a child stand or knee l on any
seat, for examp le the front seat.
- Never let a child ride in the ca rgo area of
your vehicle.
- Always remember that a ch ild lean ing
forward, sitt ing s ideways or out of posi­
t ion in any way during an acc ident can be
struck by a deploying airbag . This will re­
sult in se rious personal injury or death.
- If you must install a booster seat on the

Booster seats on the rear seat
Children who are about 7 years and older, who
weigh mo re than SS lbs . (25 kg) and are not
ta ller than 4'11" (1.5 m) are best protected
when properly rest rained on the rear seat.
D ue to limited rear seat head clearance c hil ­
dren 4'3" (1.3 m) and taller must not use
booster seats o n the rear seat of your Aud i TT
Coupe. The rear seat of your Audi TT Coupe
has been specially designed to permit ch ildren
who are betwee n 4'3" ( 1.3 m) and 4'11" ( 1.5
m) tall (about 7 to 12 years old) to use the
available th ree -point lap and s hou lde r safety
belts.
