Some indicators lights in the disp lay can turn
on in several colors.
A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle information may result
in serious personal injury or vehicle dam­
age .
- Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher¢ page 46 .
- The engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area .
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme cau­
t ion when work ing under the hood

Ma lfun ctions or faults w ill be identified e i­
ther with a red symbo l (pr iority 1 -Dan­
ger!) or with a ye llow symbo l (pr iority 2 -
Warning).
Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly to check
the function of that system when yo u switch
the ign ition on. These systems are marked
with an./ in the follow ing tables . If one of
these ind icator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system .

diately contact your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop to have all brake pads in­
spected

When t he light comes on, an audible warning
signal is also given.
A WARNING
-Always observe the warnings in
¢ page 226, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the
brake fluid .
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard. Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: Ifthe llll warning light,
the
G1 warning light and the firlilJ warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up first under hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle control and an accident.
Have your vehicle repaired immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer or a quali­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light ., the
DJ warning light and the
ABS warning light
BJ come on together,
the rear wheels could lock up first under
hard braking. Rear wheel lock -up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acci­
dent . Have your vehicle repaired immedi­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop. Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up
while you are driving, the fluid Level in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair
facility and have the brake system in­ spected. -
Always keep in mind that after several
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
vehicle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with maximum stopping power
in critical situations. You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an accident.
PARK/( ®) Electromechanical parking
brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator light - (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the parking brake
was set. If the parking brake is set when the
ignition is off, the indicator light turns off af­
ter about 20 seconds.
Th e warning/indicator light will go out when
the parking brake is released.

Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator light blinks and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
ke ep the vehicle from rolling . The brakes have
overheated. The vehicle could roll away even
on a small incline .
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
To release the parking brake, press the brake
pedal and press the button

with starting assist at the same time

Please release parking brake
To release the parking brake manually , press
the brake pedal and press the button~ at the
same time. The parking brake only releases
automat ica lly if the driver's safety belt is fas­
tened .
ES Parking brake!
If the ES indicator light turns on and this
message appears, there is a parking brake
malfunction. Drive to your authorized Audi

This message appears if the driver's door is
opened while the ignition is switched on . Al­
ways sw itch
off the ignition if you are leaving
the vehicle . See also

Shift to P and turn off ignition before leav­
ing car , otherwise vehicle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened while the ignition is sw itched on and
the selector lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selector lever into the P position and
sw itch
off the ign ition when you ex it the vehi­
cle . Otherwise the vehicle could ro ll. See al so
¢page 83.
Starting the engine if there is a
malfunction
It may not be possible to start the engine un ­
der certain circumstances, for example if the
battery in the vehicle key is drained, if inter­
ference has affected the key or if there is a
system malfunction .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

• Pull on the switch C®l ¢ fig. 87 ® to apply
the parking brake. The indicator light in the
switch illuminates.
• Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator
pedal and press the switch ©lat the same
time to release the park ing brake. The indi­
cator light in the switch goes out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­ chanical parking brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the veh icle from rolling
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake .
In add ition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting a ss ist helps you when
dr iving by automatically releasing the park­
ing brake

-When starting on inclines, the starting as -
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional-
ly rolling back. The braking force of the
park ing brake is not re leased until sufficient

- When the vehicle is par ked, the par king
brake goes through a se lf -test cycle at regu
lar interva ls. Any associated noises
are normal.

lease the parking brake or operate elec ­
trica l equipment (e.g . power windows) .

- When the vehicle is locked, no one - par­
ticularly not children should rema in in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
d ifficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle - putting lives at risk .
· Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking broke is released au tomatically upon
star ting.
