Warning light in th e instrument cluster
display
If the . warning light in the instrument clus­
ter disp lay flashes, this can mean one of two
things: either the coolant
temperature is too
high, or the coolant
level is too low
¢page 30.
If the needle is we ll in the upper area of the
ga uge, the coo lant temperature is too high.
Stop the veh icle , switch the engine off, and
allow it to cool.
I f the warni ng light comes o n
again after driving a short distance, contact
an author ized Audi d ealer or other qualif ied
wo rkshop.

Tachometer (engine rev counter )
The tachometer indicates the engine R PM
(revolu tions per minutes) .
If engine RPM drops be low 1,50 0, you should
dow nshift to the nex t lo wer ge ar. Th e re d ar ea at the end of the scale indica
tes maxim um
p ermissible engine RPM after the break -in pe­
riod. Before reaching this a rea , move these ­
lector lever to position 0/5 o r ease your foot
off the acce lerator pedal.

T he Auto-Chec k system ¢ page 2 7 constant-

"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

forward into the ignition switch. The engine
can now be started as usual.
Stopping the engine
.. Bring the vehicle to a full stop .
.. Move the selector lever to the P or N posi­
t ion .
.. Press on the igni tion key. The engine is
turned off.

Steering lo ck
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key. The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bu ild-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending

be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve adjusters . This is

- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certain period of time . Please
note that electrical equipment such as
exterior lights will switch off as well
when that happens .

Steering lock

Universal remote
control
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Home link
The HomeLink universal remote control con
be programmed with the remo te control for
devices that ore already present.
With Home Link, you can control devices such
as the garage door, secu rity systems, ho use
lights , etc. comfortably from the inside of you
veh icle .
H omelink makes it poss ible for you to rep lace
t hree different remote controls from dev ices
in your home with one un ive rsal remo te. Th is
featu re works for most garage door and exte­
rior door motor signals. Programming the in­
d ividual remote control for your remote con ­
trol takes p lace near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location .
A one-t ime programm ing of the sensor must
be performed before you are able to use sys­
tems with Homelink. If the system does not activate after performing the one-t ime pro­
gramming, check whether the system uses a rolling code ¢
page 138 for vehicles without
the MMI*.
& WARNING
-
- Never use the Homelink ® transmi tter
with any garage door opener that does have not the sa fety stop and reverse fea ­
ture as requ ired by federa l safety stand­
ards. Th is includes any garage door open­
er mode l manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards . Us ing

2. Press and hold both of the outer Home­
Link buttons

ard codes that were set at the factory and

n ot need to be repeated agai n to

3. Briefly press the Homelink button that
you would li ke to prog ram .

remai n in learning mode for

5. Now stand in front of your vehicle with
the original hand transmitter for the ga­ rage door opener or for the device that

mitter . If t he emergency flashers blink
three times, the programming was suc­
cessful. If the emergency flasher only
bli nks one t ime, the 5 minute t ime limit

for the adaptation has expired or the pro ­
gram ming was unsuccessful. Repeat the
programming from step 3 on the controls
or select another distance from the radia­
tor grille.
9. If the garage door or other devices sti ll
fail to be activated w it h the Homelink
control buttons after p rogramming is
comple ted, it is possib le tha t these sys­
tems might be working with a rolling code
ins tead of the normal fixed code .

At the same time, the underside of the vehicle
should be washed as well.
If the engine compartment is cleaned at any
time w ith grease removing solut ions

you have the engine washed, the anti-corro ­
sion treatment is a lmost always removed as
wel l. It is therefore essential to have a long­
lasting corrosion protection reapplied to all
surfaces, seams, joints and components in the
engine compartment .
A WARNING
Be aware: The engine compartment of any
motor vehicle is a potentially hazardous
area.
- Before working in the engine compart­
ment, be sure to read the informat io n
<=;>page 233.
- Before reaching into the front plenum
pane l, always remove the ignition key.
O therw ise, the windshield wiper system
cou ld unintentiona lly be switched on,
poss ibly causing personal injury from the
moving wiper linkage .
-Never reach into the area around or
touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary fan is temperature controlled and can switch
on suddenly- even when the ign it ion is
off.
- Do not wash, wax or dry the engine w ith
the engine running. Moving or hot parts cou ld injure you .
- Do not clean the underside of the chas­ sis, fenders, wheel covers, or other hard
to reach parts w ithout protecting your
hands and arms. You may cut yourse lf on
sharp-edged metal parts .
