Vehicles without 7-Speed Sport Sequential Shiftmatic mode
Vehicles without smart entry & start system:
While the engine switch is in the ON position, depress the
brake pedal and move the shift lever.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system:
While the “ENGINE START STOP” switch is in the
IGNITION ON mode, depress the brake pedal and move
the shift lever.
When shifting the shift lever between P and D, make sure that the
vehicle is completely stopped by depressing the brake pedal.

Vehicles without smart entry & start system:

Driving in the “M” position (vehicles with 7-Speed Sport
Sequential Shiftmatic mode)
By shifting the shift lever into the “M” position, 7 stages of gear can be
switched between.
Upshifting
Downshifting
Unless the shift lever is operated,
the gear displayed on the meter
cluster is fixed.
Shift position uses
*: To improve fuel consumption and reduce noises, set the shift lever in D
for normal driving.

If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P (P. 425)
Automatic gear shifting in 7-Speed Sport Sequential Shiftmatic mode
Even when the gear position is fixed while driving, the gear step will be auto-
matically upshifted or downshifted by one step if the engine speed is too
high, or too low.
Downshifting restrictions warning buzzer (vehicles with 7-Speed Sport
Sequential Shiftmatic mode)
To help ensure safety and driving performance, downshifting operation may
sometimes be restricted. In some circumstances, downshifting may not be
possible even when the shift lever is operated. (The warning buzzer will
sound twice.)
If the “M” indicator is not displayed after shifting the shift lever to the
“M” position (vehicles with 7-Speed Sport Sequential Shiftmatic mode)
If the display does not change to “M” on an occasion other than that
described above, it may indicate a malfunction in the transmission system.
Have your vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
If the “M” indicator flashes (vehicles with 7-Speed Sport Sequential
Shiftmatic mode)
This may indicate a malfunction in the transmission system.

When the vehicle comes to a stop while driving with the shift lever in

When the vehicle comes to a stop, the transmission will be automatically
downshifted to the first step.
When the vehicle restarts, the transmission is in the first step.
When the vehicle is stopped, the transmission is fixed in the first step.
