Operating hints l To prevent the clutch from slipping (Vehicle
with a M/T only), do not rev the engine more
than is required when starting off. l
Be
sure that the driving speed does not ex-
ceed 100 km/h (62 mph) for trailer operation.
It is also recommended that you obey the lo-
cal regulations in case driving speed with a
trailer is limited to less than 100 km/h
(62 mph).
l To prevent shocks from the overrun brake, de-
press the brake pedal lightly at first and then
more strongly.
l To make full use of engine braking, change
to a lower shift point before descending a
slope.
Additional precautions for vehicles equipped with
a CVT
It is recommended the “D” position on slopes or at
low speed.
Use the sports mode in mountainous areas in order
to make better use of engine braking and to assist
the brake system.
However, be sure that the speed does not exceed
the maximum speed limit for the selected shift posi-
tion.
Overheating
This will normally occur as a result of some me-
chanical failure. If your vehicle should overheat,
stop and check for a loose or broken water pump/
alternator drive belt, a blocked radiator air intake
or a low coolant level. If these items are satisfacto-
ry the overheating could be caused by a number of
mechanical causes that would have to be checked
at a competent service centre. Starting and driving

On vehicles with the automatic air condition-
ing, when the engine coolant temperature
rises to a certain level, the air selection is au-
tomatically switched to the recirculation posi-
tion and the indication lamp (A) comes on.
At this time, the system will not switch to the
outside position even if the air selection
switch is pushed.

Functions can be changed as desired, as stated below.
l Enable automatic air control
•

Heater/Manual air conditioning:When the system operates, the air selec-
tion switch will be automatically control-
led.
• Automatic air conditioning: When the mode selection dial or blower
speed selection dial is turned to the “AU-
TO” position, the air selection switch is al-
so controlled automatically.
l Disable automatic air control
• Heater/Manual air conditioning:Even when the system operates, the air se-
lection switch will not be automatically
controlled.
• Automatic air conditioning: Even when the mode selection dial or
blower speed selection dial is turned to
the “AUTO” position, the air selection
switch is not controlled automatically.
l Setting change method
Hold down the air selection switch for about
10 seconds or more.
When the setting is changed, a sound is emit-
ted and the indication lamp flashes. • When
the setting is changed from enable
to disable 3 sounds are emitted and the in-
dication lamp flashes 3 times.
• When the setting is changed from disable to enable 2 sounds are emitted and the in-
dication lamp flashes 3 times.
NOTE l The factory setting is “Enable automatic air
control.”
l When the mode selection dial is turned to
“ ”,
in order to prevent misting of the win-
dows the ventilator automatically switches to
outside air even if “Disable automatic air con-
trol” is set.

Push the switch to turn the air conditioning on, indi-
cation lamp (A) will come on.
There is a sound each time the switch is pressed.
Manual air conditioning Automatic air conditioning Push the switch again to switch it off. CAUTION
l
When
using the air conditioning, the
idling speed may slightly increase as the
air conditioning compressor is switched
on/off automatically. While the vehicle
with a CVT is stationary, fully depress
the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle
from creeping.
NOTE l If

a problem is detected in the air condition-
ing system, the air conditioning operation in-
dication lamp (A) blinks. Press the air condi-
tioning switch once to turn it off, then once
more to turn it back on. If the air condition-
ing operation indication lamp does not blink
for a while, there is nothing wrong. If it
starts to blink again, we recommend you to
have it checked.
l Sometimes, for example after using a high-
pressure car wash, the condenser can get wet,
and the operation indication lamp (A) blinks
temporarily. In this case there is nothing
wrong. Wait a while, press the air condition-
ing switch once to turn the system off, then
once more to turn it back on. Once the water
evaporates, the blinking will stop.

How to change a tyre

Before
changing a tyre, first stop your vehicle in a
safe, flat location. 1. Park the vehicle on level and stable ground,free of loose pebbles, etc.
2. Set the parking brake firmly.
3. On vehicles with M/T, stop the engine and move the gearshift lever to the “R” (Reverse)
position.
On vehicles with CVT, move the selector lev-
er to the “P” (PARK) position and stop the en-
gine.
4. Turn on the hazard warning flashers and set up a warning triangle, flashing signal lamp,
etc., at an adequate distance from the vehi-
cle, and have all your passengers leave the ve-
hicle.
NOTE l The warning triangle and flashing signal
lamp do not come with your vehicle. It is rec-
ommended that you keep one in the vehicle
for use if needed.
5. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when it is raised on the jack, place chocks or blocks
(A) in front of and behind the tyre that is di-
agonally opposite from the tyre (B) you are
changing. WARNING
l Be
sure to apply chocks or blocks to the
correct tyre when jacking up the vehicle.
If the vehicle moves while jacked up, the
jack could slip out of position, leading to
an accident.
NOTE l The

chocks shown in the illustration do not
come with your vehicle. It is recommended
that you keep one in the vehicle for use if nee-
ded.
l If chocks or blocks are not available, use
stones or any other objects that are large
enough to hold the wheel in position.
6. Get the jack bar and wheel nut wrench ready. Refer to “Tools, jack and tyre repair kit” on
page 6-05. Spare wheel information*

Check

the air pressure of the spare tyre frequently
and make sure it is ready for emergency use at any
time.

Maintaining the spare wheel at the highest speci-
fied air pressure will ensure that it can always be
used under any conditions (city/high-speed driving,
varying load weight, etc.).
The spare wheel is stored beneath the luggage floor
board of the luggage compartment. CAUTION
l
The
pressure should be periodically
checked and maintained at the specified
pressure while the tyre is stowed.
Driving with an insufficient tyre pressure
can lead to an accident. If you have no
choice but to drive with an insufficient
tyre pressure, keep your speed down and
inflate the tyre to the correct pressure as
soon as possible. (Refer to “Tyre inflation
pressures” on page 8-12.)
l When the tread wear indicators appear,
the tyre must be replaced.
Refer to “Wheel condition” on page 8-13.
Temporary spare wheel (spare wheel with a speed
limit label)*
The T155/90D16
or T125/90D16 size spare wheel
is stored beneath the luggage floor board of the lug-
gage compartment. It is designed to save space in
the luggage compartment and its light weight
makes it easy to handle in the event of a flat tyre. For emergencies

CAUTION
• When washing around the door glass,
hold the nozzle at a distance of more
than 70 cm and at right angles to the
glass surface.
l After washing the vehicle, drive the vehi-
cle slowly while lightly depressing the
brake pedal several times in order to dry
out the brakes.
Leaving the brakes wet could result in re-
duced braking performance. Also, there
is a possibility that they could freeze up
or become inoperative due to rust, render-
ing the vehicle unable to move.
l When using an automatic car wash, pay
attention to the following items, referring
to the operation manual or consulting a
car wash operator. If the following proce-
dure is not followed, it could result in dam-
age to your vehicle.
• The outside mirrors are retracted.
• The antenna is removed.
• The wiper arms are secured in placewith tape.
• If your vehicle is equipped with a rear spoiler or roof rails, consult a car
wash operator before using the car
wash.
• If your vehicle has rain sensor wipers, place the wiper switch lever in the
“OFF” position to deactivate the rain
sensor. During cold weather
Salt

and other chemicals spread on the roads in
some areas in winter can have a harmful effect on
the vehicle body. You should therefore wash the ve-
hicle as often as possible in accordance with our
care-instructions. It is recommended to have a pres-
ervative applied and the underfloor protection
checked before and after the cold weather season.
After washing your vehicle, wipe off all water-
drops from the rubber parts around the doors to pre-
vent the doors from freezing.
NOTE
l To prevent freezing of the weatherstripping
on the doors, bonnet, etc., they should be trea-
ted with silicone spray.

Waxing the vehicle will help prevent the adherence
of

dust and road chemicals to the paintwork. Apply
a wax solution after washing the vehicle, or at least
once every three months to assist displacing of water.
Do not wax your vehicle in direct sunlight. You
should wax after the surfaces have cooled. CAUTION
l
Waxes
containing high abrasive com-
pounds should not be used. Such waxes re-
move rust and stains effectively from the
paintwork but they are harmful to the lus-
tre on the painted surface and the plated
surface.
Further, they are harmful to glossy surfa-
ces such as grille, garnish, mouldings, etc. CAUTION
l
Do
not use petrol or paint thinners to re-
move road tar or other contamination to
the painted surface.
l Do not apply wax to sections that have a
black mat paint coating, as doing so
could cause uneven discolouration, spots
or stains. If wax gets on such areas, wipe
it off using lukewarm water and a soft
cloth.

The vehicle should only be polished if the paint-
work

has become stained or lost its lustre. Do not
polish parts with a mat coating and the plastic bump-
ers. Doing so could cause stains or damage the finish.

Small cracks and scratches in the paint coat should
be

touched up as soon as possible with
MITSUBISHI touch-up paint to prevent corrosion.
Check body areas facing the road or the tyres care-
fully for damage to the paint caused by gravels,
etc. The paint code number for your vehicle can be
found on the vehicle information code plate in the
engine compartment.

Use a sponge or chamois leather.
If

a car wax adheres on a grey or black rough sur-
face of the bumper, moulding or lamps, the surface
becomes white. In such a case, wipe it off using
lukewarm water and soft cloth or chamois leather. Vehicle care

this does not close the bonnet, release it
from a slightly higher position.
l Do not press down the bonnet hard with a
hand as it may damage the bonnet.
l For vehicles equipped with the security
alarm system, if you drive with the bonnet
left open, warning display is displayed on the
information screen in the multi-information
display.

The engine oil used has a significant effect on the
engine’s

performance, service life and startability.
Be sure to use oil of the recommended quality and
appropriate viscosity.
All engines consume a certain amount of oil during
normal operation. Therefore, it is important to
check the oil level at regular intervals or before start-
ing a long trip. 1. Park the car on a horizontal surface.
2. Switch off the engine.
3. Wait a few minutes.
4. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a cleancloth.
5. Reinsert the dipstick as far as it goes.
6. Remove the dipstick and read the oil level, which should always be within the range in-
dicated.
7. If the oil level is below the specified limit, re- move the cap located on the cylinder head
cover and add enough oil to raise the level to
within the specified range. Do not overfill to
avoid engine damage. Be sure to use the speci-
fied engine oil and do not mix various types
of oil. Maintenance

of additives is not recommended since
they may reduce the effectiveness of addi-
tives already included in the engine oil. It

To check the coolant level
A
transparent coolant reserve tank (A) is located in
the engine compartment.
The coolant level in this tank should be kept be-
tween the “LOW” and “FULL” marks when meas-
ured while the engine is cold.
FULL
LOW To add coolant
The

cooling system is a closed system and normal-
ly the loss of coolant should be very slight. A no-
ticeable drop in the coolant level could indicate leak-
age. If this occurs, we recommend you to have the
system checked as soon as possible.
If the level should drop below the “LOW” level on
the reserve tank, open the lid and add coolant.
Also, if the reserve tank is completely empty, re-
move the radiator cap (B) and add coolant until the
level reaches the filler neck. WARNING
l Do
not open the radiator cap (B) while
the engine is hot. The coolant system is un-
der pressure and any hot coolant escap-
ing could cause severe burns.
Anti-freeze
The
engine coolant contains an ethylene glycol anti-
corrosion agent. Some parts of the engine are cast
aluminium alloy, and periodic changing of the en-
gine coolant is necessary to prevent corrosion of
these parts.

Use “DIA QUEEN SUPER LONG LIFE COOL-
ANT PREMIUM” or equivalent*.
*: similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-
silicate, non-amine, non-nitrate and non-borate cool-
ant with long life hybrid organic acid technology
MITSUBISHI Genuine Coolant has excellent pro-
tection against corrosion and rust formation of all
metals including aluminium and can avoid block-
ages in the radiator, heater, cylinder head, engine
block, etc.
Because of the necessity of this anti-corrosion
agent, the coolant must not be replaced with plain
water even in summer. The required concentration
of anti-freeze differs depending on the expected am-
bient temperature.

Above - 35 °C: 50 % concentration of anti-freeze
Below - 35 °C: 60 % concentration of anti-freeze Maintenance

CAUTION
l
Do not use alcohol or methanol anti-
freeze or any engine coolants mixed with
alcohol or methanol anti-freeze. The use
of an improper anti-freeze can cause cor-
rosion of the aluminium components.
l Do not use water to adjust the concentra-
tion of coolant.
l Concentrations exceeding 60 % will re-
sult in a reduction of both the anti-freeze
and cooling performance thus adversely
affecting the engine.
l Do not top up with water only.
Water by itself reduces the rust-protec-
tive and anti-freeze qualities of the cool-
ant and has a lower boiling point. It can
also cause damage to the cooling system if
it should freeze. Do not use tapwater, as it
can cause corrosion and rust formation.
During cold weather
If
the temperatures in your area drop below freez-
ing, there is the danger that the coolant in the en-
gine or radiator could freeze and cause severe dam-
age to the engine and/or radiator. Add a sufficient
amount of anti-freeze to the coolant to prevent it
from freezing.
The concentration should be checked before the
start of cold weather and anti-freeze added to the
system if necessary. Washer fluid

the washer fluid reservoir cap and check the
level of washer fluid with the dipstick.
If the level is low, replenish the container with wash-
er fluid.

l The

washer fluid container serves the wind-
screen, rear window and headlamps (if so
equipped).
During cold weather
To ensure proper operation of the washers at low
temperatures, use a fluid containing an anti-freez-

The

brake fluid and the clutch fluid share the reser-
voir tank.
To check the fluid level
The fluid level must be between the “MAX” and
“MIN” marks on the reservoir. The fluid level is monitored by a float. When the
fluid

level falls below the “MIN” mark, the brake
fluid warning lamp lights up.
The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake
pads, but this does not indicate any abnormality.

The fluid in the master cylinder should be checked
when doing other work under the bonnet. The
brake system should also be checked for leakage at
the same time.
If the fluid level falls markedly in a short length of
time, it indicates leaks from the brake system.
If this occurs, we recommend you to have the vehi-
