Instrument panel
Control and warning lamps
The control and warning lamps are indicators of warnings, Ÿ, faults Ÿ
or certain functions. Some control and warning lamps come on when the igni-
tion is switched on, and go out when the engine starts running, or while
driving.
Depending on the model, additional text messages may be viewed on the
instrument panel display. These may be purely informative or they may be
advising of the need for action Ÿpage 64, “Instruments”.
Depending upon the equipment fitted in the vehicle, instead of a warning
lamp, sometimes a symbol may be displayed on the instrument panel.
When certain control and warning lamps are lit, an audible warning is also
heard.

Exterior mirrors
Synchronised mirror adjustment
xIn the menu Settings - Convenience select whether or not the mirrors
should move in synchronisation Ÿpage 70.
xTurn the knob to position L.
xAdjust the left-hand exterior mirror. The right exterior mirror will be
adjusted at the same time (synchronised).
xIf necessary the right exterior mirror adjustment may need correcting. Turn
the knob to position R.
Automatic anti-dazzle exterior mirror, driver's side
The automatic anti-dazzle exterior mirror is controlled in the same way as the
automatic anti-dazzle rear vision mirror Ÿpage 131.
Store the reverse settings for the passenger exterior mirror
xSelect the vehicle key in which the setting is to be stored.
xUse this key to unlock the vehicle.
xConnect the automatic parking brake.
xSwitch the ignition on.
xMove the gear lever to neutral.
xIn the menu Settings - Convenience activate the function Mirror
adjustment.
xSelect reverse gear.
xAdjust the front passenger exterior mirror so that you can see, for
example, the kerb area.
xThe new position of the mirror will be stored automatically and allocated
to the vehicle key that was used to unlock the vehicle. For vehicles with seat
memory, please see Ÿpage 137.
Activating the passenger exterior mirror settings
xTurn the exterior mirror knob to position R.
xWith the ignition switched on, select reverse gear.
xThe stored position of the passenger exterior mirror for reverse gear is
deleted when driving forwards at 15 km/h, or if the knob is turned from posi-
tion R to another position.
Turn the knob to the required position:
#Electric folding exterior mirrors Ÿ.
?Switch on the exterior mirror heating This only heats up if the
ambient temperature is less than +20 °C (+68 °F).
,Adjust the left-hand exterior mirror by turning the knob for-
wards, backwards, to the left or to the right.
2Adjust the right-hand exterior mirror by turning the knob for-
wards, backwards, to the left or to the right.
Zero position. Exterior mirror unfolded, exterior mirror heating
off, adjustment of exterior mirror not possible.

burns to the back, buttocks and legs from use of the seat heating that may
lead to a long healing process or that may never completely heal. Seek
medical advice if you have doubts regarding your health.
xPeople with a limit pain and temperature threshold must never use seat
heating.
Caution
xTo avoid damaging the heating elements of the seat heating, please do
not kneel on the seat or apply sharp pressure at a single point to the seat
cushion and backrest.
xLiquids, sharp objects and insulating materials on the seat could damage
the seat heating.
xIn the event of smells, switch off the seat heating immediately and have
the unit inspected by a qualified workshop.
For the sake of the environment
The seat heating should remain on only when needed. Otherwise, it is an
unnecessary fuel waste.

Individual settings for the driver seat and the exterior mirror can be assigned
to each memory button.
Storing exterior mirror settings for driving forwards
xConnect the automatic parking brake.
xMove the gear lever to neutral.
xSwitch the ignition on.
xAdjust the front seat and the exterior mirrors.
xKeep the button held down for more than one second Ÿfig. 86.
xPress the required memory button for the following 10 seconds. A sound
confirms the settings have been stored.

WARNING
Careless or incorrect use of vehicle keys may result in severe injury and
accident.
xAlways take all the keys with you whenever you leave the vehicle. Chil-
dren and other unauthorised persons could lock the vehicle, start the engine or switch on the ignition and any electrical components such as the
electric windows.
Note
In vehicles with a diesel engine and KESSY, the starting of the engine may be
delayed due to pre-heating of the engine.
Starting the engine
Complete operations only in the sequence given:

ator. To start the engine, the system should detect a valid key inside
the vehicle.
5.When the engine has started, release the key in the ignition lock.When the engine starts, release the starter button.

WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended if the engine is running. The vehicle
could move off suddenly, especially if it is in gear, resulting in an accident
and serious injury.
WARNING
Cold start sprays could explode or cause a sudden increase in the engine
speed.
xNever use start boosters.
Caution
xAn attempt to start the engine while driving or starting the engine imme-
diately after turning it off can cause damage to the engine or starter motor.
xWhen the engine is cold, avoid high revs and heavy acceleration and do
not make the engine work hard.
xDo not push or tow start the engine. Sunburnt fuel could damage the cata-
lytic converter.
For the sake of the environment
Do not warm the engine at idle speed; start driving immediately if the visi-
bility is OK. This helps the engine reach operating temperature faster and
reduces emissions.
Note
For example, if the key battery is very worn or flat, the engine cannot be
started with the starter button. In this case, remove the ignition button from
the lock and insert the key.
Note
Electrical components with a high power consumption are switched off
temporarily when the engine starts.
Note
When the engine is started cold, there may be strong vibrations for a few
moments for technical reasons. This is quite normal, and no cause for
concern.
Note
At temperatures below +5 °C (+41 °F), smoke may be given off below the
vehicle when the additional heater is connected.
Stopping the engine
Complete operations only in the sequence given:

Changing gear
Introduction
When reverse gear is engaged and the ignition is switched on the following
takes place:
xReverse lights light up.
xWhen reversing, the air conditioner automatically changes to air recircu-
lation mode.
xThe rear window heater switches on when the windscreen wiper is acti-
vated.
xAlso, the parking sensor system, the optical parking sensor and the
camera for the reverse assist system are connected.

WARNING
Rapid acceleration can cause loss of traction and skidding, especially on
slippery ground. This could cause loss of control of the vehicle resulting in
an accident and considerable damage.
xOnly use the kickdown or rapid acceleration if visibility, weather, road
and traffic conditions so permit.
WARNING
Do not allow the brakes to “rub” for a prolonged period of time, or brake
frequently or for long periods of time. Continuous braking heats up the
brakes. This could significantly reduce braking power, increase braking
distance or even result in the total failure of the brake system.
Caution
xNever make the brakes slip by pressing the pedal gently, if it is not really
necessary to brake. This will increase wear.
xReduce speed, move down a gear or select a shorter range of gears before
long steep slopes. This allows you to use the engine braking effect and to
reduce the strain on the brake system. Otherwise, the brakes may overheat
and fail. Only use the brakes to reduce speed or to stop.

Manual gearbox: Engaging gears
The position of each of the gears is shown on the gear stick Ÿfig. 138.
xKeep the clutch pedal pushed all the way down.
xMove the gear stick to the required position.
In some countries, it is necessary to press the clutch pedal to the floor to start
the engine.
Selecting reverse gear
xWith the vehicle at a standstill, press the clutch pedal to the floor and
keep pressed.
xPush the gear lever down.
xMove the gear stick to the left and then forwards to reverse gear

WARNING
When the engine is running, the vehicle will start to move as soon as a gear
is engaged and the clutch released. This is also the case with the electronic
parking brake on.
xNever engage the reverse gear when a vehicle is moving forward.
Caution
To prevent damage and avoid premature wear, please observe the following:
xWhile driving, do not leave your hand resting on the gear stick. The pres-
sure applied by your hand is transmitted to the gearbox selector forks.
xAlways ensure that the vehicle is completely stopped before engaging the
reverse gear.
xWhen changing gear, always make sure the clutch pedal is pushed right
to the floor.
xNever hold the vehicle on the clutch on hills.
