COOLING FAN
DescriptionINFOID:0000000005398596
The ECM controls the cooling fan corresponding to the vehicle speed, engine coolant
temperature, refrigerant
pressure, and air conditioner ON signal. The contro l system has 3-step control [HIGH/LOW/OFF].
COOLING FAN MOTOR
Models without A/C
The cooling fan operates at each speed when the current flows in the cooling fan motor as per the following.
Models with A/C
The cooling fan operates at high (HI) speed when the current flows, and operates at low (LOW) speed when
cooling fan motor and the resistor are circuited in series.
Component Function CheckINFOID:0000000005398597
1.CHECK COOLING FAN FUNCTION
With CONSULT-III
1. Turn ignition switch ON.
2. Perform “COOLING FAN” in “ACTIVE TEST” mode with CONSULT-III.
3. Touch “LOW” and “Hi” on the CONSULT-III screen.
4. Check that cooling fan operates at each speed.
Without CONSULT-III
1. Perform IPDM E/R auto active test and c heck cooling fan motor operation. Refer to PG-20, "
Auto Active
Te s t".
2. Check that cooling fan operates at each speed.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> INSPECTION END
NO >> Refer to EC-417, "

POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION
DescriptionINFOID:0000000005398629
This system returns blow-by gas to the intake manifold.
The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve is prov
ided to conduct crankcase blow-by gas to the intake
manifold.
During partial throttle operation of the engine, the intake manifold
sucks the blow-by gas through the PCV valve.
Normally, the capacity of the valve is sufficient to handle any blow-by
and a small amount of ventilating air.
The ventilating air is drawn from t he air inlet tubes into the crank-
case. In this process the air passes through the hose connecting air
inlet tubes to rocker cover.
Under full-throttle condition, the manifold vacuum is insufficient to
draw the blow-by flow through the valve. The flow goes through the
hose connection in the reverse direction.
On vehicles with an excessively high blow-by, the valve does not
meet the requirement. This is because some of the flow will go
through the hose connection to the air inlet tubes under all conditions.
Component InspectionINFOID:0000000005398630
1.CHECK PCV VALVE
With engine running at idle, remove PCV valve from rocker cover. A
properly working valve makes a hissing noise as air passes through
it. A strong vacuum should be felt immediately when a finger is
placed over valve inlet.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> INSPECTION END
NO >> Replace PCV valve.

REFRIGERANT PRESSURE SENSOR
REFRIGERANT PRESSURE SENSOR
DescriptionINFOID:0000000005398631
The refrigerant pressure sensor is installed at the condenser of the air conditioner system. The sensor uses an
electrostatic volume pressure transducer to convert refrigerant pressure to voltage. The voltage signal is sent
to ECM, and ECM controls cooling fan system.
Component Function CheckINFOID:0000000005398632
1.CHECK REFRIGERANT PRESSURE SENSOR OVERALL FUNCTION
1. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
2. Turn A/C switch and blower fan switch ON.
3. Check the voltage between ECM harness connector and ground.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> INSPECTION END
NO >> Go to EC-451, "

VALUES ON THE DIAGNOSIS TOOL
Remarks:
• Specification data are reference values.
• Specification data are output/input values which are
detected or supplied by the ECM at the connector.
*Specification data may not be directly relat ed to their components signals/values/operations.
I.e. Adjust ignition timing with a timing light before m onitoring IGN TIMING, because the monitor may show the
specification data in spite of the ignition timing not bei ng adjusted to the specification data. this IGN TIMING
monitors the data calculated by the ECM according to the signals input from the camshaft position sensor and
other ignition timing related sensors.

lamp circuit Engine speed will not rise
more than 2,500 rpm due to
the fuel cut When there is an open circuit on MIL circuit, the ECM cannot warn the driver by
lighting up MIL when there is malfunction on engine control system.
Therefore, when electrical controlled throttle and part of ECM related diagnoses
are continuously detected as NG for 5 trips, ECM warns the driver that engine
control system malfunctions and MIL circuit is open by means of operating fail-
safe function.
The fail-safe function also operates when above diagnoses except MIL circuit
are detected and demands the driver to repair the malfunction.
