Power steering system

When
the engine is stopped, the power steering sys-
tem will not function and it will require greater man-
ual effort to operate the steering wheel. Keep this
in mind in particular when towing the vehicle. Nev-
er turn off the engine while driving.
Periodically check the power steering fluid level. CAUTION
l
Do
not hold the steering wheel in the fully
turned position (either left or right), for
longer than 10 seconds.
This can cause damage to the power steer-
ing system. Active stability control (ASC)*

The

Active Stability Control (ASC) takes overall
control of the anti-lock brake system, traction con-
trol function and stability control function to help
maintain the vehicle’s control and traction. Please
read this section in conjunction with the page on
the anti-lock brake system, traction control func-
tion and stability control function.

Do
not over-rely on the ASC. Even when
the ASC is operating, there are limits to
the system and its ability to maintain con-
trol and traction. Reckless driving may
lead to accidents. Always drive carefully,
taking account of the road conditions.
l Be sure to use the same specified type and
size of tyre on all 4 wheels. Otherwise,
there is a possibility that the ASC will not
work properly.
NOTE l In

the following situation, a click is heard
from the engine compartment; however, this
is only the sound of ASC being checked. • After turning the ignition switch to the“ON” position.
• After your vehicle is driven a short dis- tance after starting the engine. l
Some
vibration will be felt in the vehicle
body and a whining sound of a motor will be
heard from the engine compartment when
the ASC functions. This is a normal result of
the ASC operation, and does not indicate a
malfunction.
l The ASC does not operate while the ABS
warning lamp is illuminated.
Traction control function E00611800050
On slippery surfaces, traction control function pre-
vents

the drive wheels from excessive spinning,
thus helping the vehicle to start moving from a stop-
ped condition. It also provides sufficient driving
force and steering performance as the vehicle turns
at accelerated speeds. CAUTION
l
When
driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy
road, be sure to install snow tyres and
drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
l When a tyre such as a compact spare
tyre, which is different in size from the
standard tyre, has been installed, make
sure that the traction control function is
turned off.
NOTE l When

moving out of mud, sand or fresh
snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may not
allow the engine speed to increase.
If this happens and the vehicle remains stuck
as a result, turn the TCL switch OFF. The ve-
hicle will then be easier to extricate. Starting and driving

The detection areas are within approximately
50
cm (A) from the corner sensors, 100 cm (B)
from the back sensors, and 60 cm (C) or less from
the ground surface, excluding the area approximate-
ly 10 cm (D) from the ground surface. The non-de-
tection areas (E) are within approximately 20 cm
(F) from the bumper. NOTE
l If

the rear bumper has been exposed to an im-
pact, the corner or back sensors may fail and
prevent the system from functioning proper-
ly. We recommend you to have your vehicle
inspected.
l The sensors do not detect objects located in
the area directly below or near the bumper. If
the height of an object is lower than the moun-
ted position of the corner or back sensors,
the sensors may not continue detecting it
even if they detected it initially.
For information on how to change the detection
areas, please refer to “Changing the detection
areas” on page 4-31. CAUTION
l
The
corner sensor system may not oper-
ate properly under the following condi-
tions: • The sensors or surroundings are cov-ered with ice, snow, or mud.
• The sensors are frozen.
• The system receives ultrasonic noise from other sources (the horns of other
vehicles, motorcycle engines, brakes,
radios, pouring rain, splashing water,
tyre chains, etc.).
• The sensors are extremely hot or cold (while the vehicle is parked for a long
period of time under a blazing sun or
in cold weather).
• The vehicle tilts significantly.
• The vehicle is driven on a rough road (with a bumpy, gravel, hilly, or grassy
surface).
• The vehicle is too close to an obstacle.
• The sensors or surroundings have been wiped by hand, or stickers or ac-
cessories have been attached.
l The corner sensor system may not prop-
erly detect the following:
• Objects that are thin, such as wirenets or ropes.
• Objects that absorb sound waves, such as snow.
• Objects that are shaped with a sharp angle.
• Objects with a smooth surface, such as glass.
• Objects that are low, such as kerb- stones. NOTE
l The

buzzer may sound lower than the normal
warning sound when the corner sensor sys-
tem is receiving ultrasonic noise from other
sources, but this is not a malfunction. The buz-
zer will stop sounding and the system will re-
turn to normal operation after the noise is no
longer received.

To operate the system while the ignition switch is
“ON”,

move the selector lever to the “R” (RE-
VERSE) position on an A/T vehicle, or move the
gearshift lever to the “R” (Reverse) position on a
M/T vehicle. To stop the operation, push the “SO-
NAR” switch. The “SONAR OFF” indication lamp will illumi-
nate

to indicate that the system has stopped operat-

nutes, then start the engine in the vehicle
with the discharged battery.
CAUTION
l
Keep the engine of the vehicle giving assis-
tance running.
7. After
the engine is started, disconnect the ca- bles in the reverse order. WARNING
l Charging
the battery while it is installed
in the vehicle might cause the battery to
catch fire and explode. Or damage to the
vehicle could result. If it has to be charg-
ed in that condition for unavoidable rea-
sons, disconnect the vehicle side negative
(-) terminal connected to the battery.
l Keep sparks, cigarettes and flames away
from the battery because the battery may
produce an explosion.
l Use adequate ventilation when charging
or using the battery in an enclosed space.
l Remove all the caps before charging the
battery.
l Electrolyte is corrosive diluted sulphuric
acid.
If electrolyte (battery acid) comes into con-
tact with your hands, eyes, clothes and
the painted surface of your vehicle, it
should be thoroughly flushed with water.
If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them
with water immediately and thoroughly,
and get prompt medical attention. CAUTION
l
Do
not attempt to start the engine by pull-
ing or pushing the vehicle.
It could damage your vehicle.
l Always wear protective eye goggles when
working near the battery.
l Keep the battery out of the reach of chil-
dren.
NOTE l If

the vehicle is put in motion without fully
charging the battery, it might cause the loss
of smooth engine operation and the anti-lock
brake warning lamp to illuminate. Refer to
“Anti-lock brake system (ABS)” on page
4-21. Engine overheating

If

the water temperature gauge indication remains
in the overheating zone for a long time, the engine
may be overheating. If this occurs, take the follow-
ing corrective measures: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place.
2. Check whether steam is coming from the en-gine compartment.

[If steam does not come from the engine com-
partment]
With the engine still running, raise the bon-
net to ventilate the engine compartment.

[If steam is coming from the engine compart-
ment]
Stop the engine, and when the steam stops,
raise the bonnet to ventilate the engine com-
partment. Restart the engine. WARNING
l Do
not open the bonnet while steam is com-
ing from the engine compartment. It
could cause steam or hot water to spurt
out, causing burns. Hot water could spurt
out even when there is no steam coming
out, and some parts will be very hot. Be
very careful when opening the bonnet.
l Be careful of hot steam, which could be
blowing off the reserve tank cap.
l Do not attempt to remove the radiator
cap (petrol-powered vehicles) or reserve
tank cap (diesel-powered vehicles) while
the engine is hot. For emergencies

under the cover, and move it around the cir-
cumference,
prying the cover away from the
wheel little by little as you move the bar
around.
NOTE l The wheel cover is made of plastic; take care
when prying it off. CAUTION
l
Use
the jack bar until the wheel cover
comes completely off. If you try to use
your hands, they may get hurt by the
edge of the wheel cover.
To install 1. Align
the wheel nuts with the wheel cover
mounting holes, and align the air valve (A)
of the tyre with the notch (B) in the wheel
cover. NOTE
l Full

wheel covers have a symbol mark (C)
provided on the reverse side to show the air
valve location.
Before installing the wheel cover to the
wheel, make sure that the opening with the
symbol mark is correctly aligned with the air
valve.
2. Press the bottom part (D) of the wheel cover onto the wheel.
3. Gently push both sides (E) of the wheel cov- er and hold them in place with both knees.
4. Gently tap around the circumference of the wheel cover at the top (F), then push the
wheel cover into place. NOTE
l Before

installing the wheel cover, make sure
the tabs on the back are correctly fitted on
the rings. If the tabs are not correctly fitted
on the rings, the wheel cover may come off.
If the tabs are broken, do not install the
wheel cover. Towing

If your vehicle needs to be towed
If

towing is necessary, we recommend you to have
it done by your MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point or a commercial tow truck service.

In the following cases, transport the vehicle using a
tow truck.
l The engine runs but the vehicle does not
move or abnormal noise is produced.
l Inspection of the vehicle’s underside reveals
that oil or some other fluid is leaking.
If a wheel gets stuck in a ditch, do not try to tow
the vehicle.
Please contact your MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-
thorized Service Point or a commercial tow truck
service for assistance.

Only when you cannot receive a towing service
from a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point or commercial tow truck service, tow
your vehicle carefully in accordance with the in-
structions given in “Emergency towing” in this part. For emergencies

Operation under adverse driving

If your vehicle becomes stuck in sand,
mud or snow
If
the vehicle becomes stuck in snow, sand, or
mud, it can often be moved with a rocking motion.
Move the selector lever alternately between the
Sports mode and “R” (REVERSE) position (with
M/T, between 1 st
and Reverse), while applying
slight pressure to the accelerator pedal.
Avoid racing the engine or spinning the wheels. Pro-
longed efforts to free a stuck vehicle may result in
overheating and transmission failure. Allow the en-
gine to idle for a few minutes to let the transmis-
sion cool between rocking attempts.
If the vehicle remains stuck after several rocking at-
tempts, seek other assistance. WARNING
l When attempting to rock your vehicle out
of

a stuck position, be sure that the area
around the vehicle is clear of people and
physical objects. The rocking motion may
cause the vehicle to suddenly launch for-
ward or backward, causing injury or dam-
age to nearby people or objects. On a flooded road
l Avoid

flooded roads. Water could enter the
brake discs, resulting in temporarily ineffec-
tive brakes. In such cases, lightly depress the
brake pedal to see if the brakes operate prop-
erly. If they do not, lightly depress the pedal
several times while driving in order to dry
the brake pads.
l When driving in rain or on a road with many
puddles a layer of water may form between
the tyres and the road surface.
This reduces a tyre’s frictional resistance on
the road, resulting in loss of steering stability
and braking capability.

To cope with this, observe the following items:
(a) Drive your vehicle at slow speed.
(b) Do not drive on worn tyres. Always maintain
the specified tyre inflation
pressures.
On a snow-covered or frozen road l When

driving on a snow-covered or frozen
road, it is recommended that you use snow
tyres or tyre chains.
Refer to the “Snow tyres” and “Tyre chains”
sections.
l Avoid high-speed operation, sudden acceler-
ation, abrupt brake application and sharp cor-
nering. l
Depressing
the brake pedal during travel on
snowy or icy roads may cause tyre slippage
and skidding. When traction between the
tyres and the road is reduced the wheels may
skid and the vehicle cannot readily be
brought to a stop by conventional braking
techniques. Braking will differ, depending
upon whether you have anti-lock brakes
(ABS). As your vehicle is equipped with anti-
lock brake system (ABS), brake by pressing
the brake pedal hard, and keeping it pressed.
l Allow extra distance between your vehicle
and the vehicle in front of you, and avoid sud-
den braking.
On a bumpy or rutted road l Drive as slow as possible when driving on
bumpy or rutted roads. CAUTION
l
The
impact on tyres and/or wheels when
driving on a bumpy or rutted road can
damage the tyre and/or wheel. For emergencies
