When starting a cold engine , the eng ine may be a b it no isy for a short
w hil e. T his is bec ause the hy dra ulic va lves are w orking to br ing up the
oil p ressure . This is normal and no cause for conce rn .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop c ranking the engi ne
a fter 1 0 seconds . Wai t 30 secon ds, then try to re start the e ngine.
& WARNING
Never start the engine in an enclosed area such as in your garage
with the garage door closed. The exhaust fumes are poisonou s!

• Avoid high engine speeds, full gas or heavy eng ine loads if the
eng ine has not war med up to its operat ing te mperatu re. You cou ld
damage the eng ine.

km/ h).

• The brake booster and the servotronic only work when the
engine is running. If you turn off the engine, more force will be
required to steer or brake the vehicle. If you are not prepared, this
could result in a collision and serious personal injury.
• For your safety, move the selector lever to the P position, then
turn off the engine. Otherwise the vehicle could inadvertently roll
away.
• After turning off the engine, the radiator fan can come on and
run for up to 10 minutes -even if the ignition is switched off. Like­
wise, the fan could come on if the temperature in the engine
compartment raises due to heat build up or if you leave the vehicle
standing in direct sunlight.

After driving at high engine load, heat can build up in the engine
compartment after you have turned off the engine. This can damage
t he engine. Let the vehicl e stand and run in idl e for about 2 minutes
before turning off the engine. •

Driver's messages in the instrument
cluster
Messages appear in the instrument cluster to let the
driver know if something is missing or if something must
be done.
No key identified
This message appears when you press the [START) button, but there
is no remote contro l key inside the vehicle or if the system does not
recognize the key. For example, if your key is
shielded by an object or
encased, i .e . in side an aluminum briefcase, the signal from the key cannot be detected
. Electron ic devices such as cell phones can also
in terfere w ith the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears when you press the !S T ART ) butto n when
starting the engine but you have not depressed the brake pedal.
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appears when you start the engine but the selector
lever is not in the P or N position . The engine can be started only if the
selector lever is in one of these two positions .
Key not in vehicle
This message appears together with the 7 symbol when the remote
control key is removed from the vehicle while the engi ne is running.
Th is is to remind you that you should not cont inue your tr ip without
your key.
If the key is no longer inside the vehicle when you turn off the engine,
you will not be able to switch on the ignition or restart the engine.
Also, you will not be able to lock the vehicle from the outs ide .
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in P.
Thi s message appears for your safety together with an audible
warning signal when you press the
[STOP) button but the selector
lever is not in the P position and you open the driver's door. Move the
selector leve r in to P, otherwise the vehicle could roll away. I n addi­
tion, you will not be able to lock the ve hicle with either the lock
button located on the door hand le or the remote control.
To engage steering lock, press and hold STOP button
Th is message appears for your personal safety if you switch off the
engine and the ignition by pressing the
[STOP) button and then open
the driver's door. In this case, the steering will still not be locked. The
steering wheel will lock:
• If you press the
I STO P I button for longer than 1 second.
• If you lock the vehicle from the outside .•

Parking
To p revent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are
a fe w things you should do.
When you park your vehicle , do the following
- Stop t he veh icle us ing the bra ke pedal.
- Pull the switch to apply t he electromechanica l parking
brake .
- Move th e se lector lev er in to the
P position ~& .
- Switch off the e ngine and remove the ignition key from
the ignition lock.
When you park your vehicle on hills, do the
following
- Stop the veh icle us ing the bra ke pedal.
- Pull the switch to apply t he e lectromechanica l parking
brake .
- I f you a re parkin g h eaded
downhill , turn the front w heels
toward th e curb .
- I f you are parking headed
uphill , turn t he fro nt wh eels
away from t he curb.
- M ove the selector lever into the
P position.
- Switch off the e ngine and remove the ign it ion key from
the ignition lock.

Thi s is how you can reduce the risk of injury when lea ving your
vehicle.

• Never park the vehicle where it can come in contact with dry
grass , spilled fuel or any other flammable material s.
• When parking on hills, always turn the wheel s so that the front
wheel s will fir st roll into the curb, if the vehicle should start to
roll.
• Never allow anyone · especially small children· to remain in
the vehicle when it i s locked. Locked door s make it more difficult
fo r rescu ers to acce ss the passenger compartment in the event of
an emergency. Danger to life!
• Never leave children unsuperv ised in the vehicle. Ch ildren
could relea se the parking brake or move the gear shift lever out of
gear. The vehicle could start to roll away and cau se an accident .

Setting Distance
In the Basic setting menu you can set the distance (time interval)
using
distance 1 , distance 2 , distance 3 or distance 4 that Adap tive
Cruise Control is to maintain to a preceding vehicle when in manage­
ment mode .
Storing settings
Your individua l settings are automatically stored and allocated to the
remote control key being used (remote key perso nalizat io n). •

General information
The radar sensor has limits that the driver must know to
be able to use ACC properly.
The Adaptive Cruise Control works within limits that are also related
to radar sensor range and sight distance. In some situations ACC may
react unusually or late from the driver's point of v iew. Therefore,
always be attentive to what is happe ning around you and always be
ready to intervene, if necessary:
• when driving around curves=>
page 139.
• when vehicles up front are not in line with your vehicle
=>
page 140 .
• when other vehicles are changing lanes=> page 140.
• when other vehicles are difficult to detect=> page 140 .
• when vehicles up ahead are no t moving or obstacles are in your
travel lane=>

Adaptive: In this sett ing, the warning time ad justs to the characte r­
is tic s of th e road and t he ve hicle speed. The w arning oc curs lat er fo r
cu rves and occurs ear lier for stra ight st retches of road . The warning
occurs later on narrow roads than on wide roads.
Late : This sett ing warns the drive r whe n a whee l dr ives over the
detected lane boundary line .
Setting the steering wheel vibration
When a dju sti ng the steering wheel v ibration, the steer ing whee l
vibrates so that you can check the in tensi ty you have set.

• When mak ing t he a dju stme nt, lane assis t is not a ct iva ted. The
steer ing wheel v ibrates briefly only to ass ist you in chang ing the

When driving through curves
Side assist cannot detect vehicles in curves with a turning radius of
less than 328 feet (100 m).
When driving through a curve, it is possible that side assist may
register a vehicle two lanes over, and the signal on the outside mirror
will light up.•

Side assist's detection area is designed to cover lanes of standard
w idth to the left and rig ht of your travel lane, depending on whether
you drive in the center of your lane or closer to the edge.
If you drive in narrow lanes, side assist's detectio n area may also
include other lanes -especially if you tend to drive on t he edge of your
lane => fig. 167. Under these conditions, vehicl es can also be
detected that are two lanes away, and side assist then could switch
between the informationa l and warning stage signals .
When driving in very wide lanes, vehicles in the adjacent lane may not
be detected because they are not inside the detection area .•

Automatic selector lever lock
The se lector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the ignition
is turned on. To move the lever from these posit ions the driver must
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the following
warning appears in the instrument cluster display when the selector
is in
P and N:
When stationary apply foot brake while selecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from lock ing when
it is moved through the
N position (going from R to D). The locking
element will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N (Neutra l) for
more than approximately
l second, w ithout the brake pedal being
pressed.
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the Automat ic Shift Lock is
automatically deactivated in the
N position.
Interlock button
The lock button o n the selector lever prevents the lever from being
accidentally shifted into certain positions. Pressing this button deac­
tivates the selector lever lock . Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at different positions . The pos itions are
highlighted in the illustration ~
page 156, fig. 170.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition un less the selector lever
is in the
P park position. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the
P position.•
Kick-down
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to generate
maximum acceleration.
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond the resistance point
that is reached at full throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine RPM. The engine RPM
will be controlled to produce maximum vehicle acceleration as long

inue to press the accelerator pedal beyond this resistance
point.
& WARNING
Be careful when using the kick -down feature on slippery roads.
Rapid acceleration may cause the vehicle to skid. •
Dynamic shift program (DSP)
The automatic transmission is electronically controlled.
The transmission is self adapting and will automatically select the
best sh ift p rogram su ited to the driv ing cond it ions and driving style.
The transmission will select one of the
economy programs when you
drive at a steady speed or a gradually changing speed without heavy
acceleration . This ach ieves optimum fuel efficiency, with early
upshifting and delayed downshifting.
Th e transmission will automatically select the
sporty shift programs
when you dr ive at higher speeds, or w ith heavy acceleration and
frequently changing speeds. Upshifts are delayed to make full use of
engine power . Downshifting takes place at higher engine speeds than
in the economy programs .
The select ion of the most suitable shift program is a cont inuous,
automatic p rocess. The driver can also make the transmission switch
t o a spo rty program by
quickly pressing down the gas pedal.
Th is causes the transmission to shift down to a lower gear to achieve
rap id acceleration, e.g . for quickly passing another vehicle. Yo u do
not need to press the gas pedal into the kick -down range . After the
transmission has upshifted, the original program is selected
according to your driving style.
An additional shift program allows the automatic transmission to select the proper gear for uph ill and downhill gradients.
Th is prevents the transmission from upshifting and downshifting
unnecessari ly on hills. The transmission will shift down to a lower _,.
