Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an adequate
am ount of oil to lubricate and c ool all of its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal
engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a
certain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine
and may change sign ificantly over the life of the engine . Typically,
engines with a specified break-in period (see~
page 190) consume
more oil during the break-in period than they co nsume after o il
consumption has stabilized .
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on
the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per minute)
at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road
conditions. Further factors are the amount of oil dilution from water
condensation or fue l residue and the oxidation level of the oil. As
any engine is subject to wear as mileage bu ilds up, the oil consump ­
tion may increase over time until rep lacement of worn components
may become necessary .
With all these variables coming into play, no standa rd rate of oil
consumption can be estab lished or specified. There is no a lternative
t o regula r and frequent checking of the oil level, see Note.

• The oil pressure w arning display ce,. is not an indi cator of the oil
level . Do not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in your engine at
regular interv als , prefe rably ea ch time you refuel , and always before
going on a long trip.
• I f you have the impression your engine consumes excessive
amoun ts of oi l, we recommend tha t you consult your Audi dealer to
have the cause of your concern properly diagnosed . Keep in mind
that the accurate measureme nt of oil consumption requires great
care and may take some time. Your Audi dealer has instructions
about how t o measure oil consumption accurately. •

- Park your vehicle so that it is horizontally level.
- While at operat ing state temperature, briefly let the
engine run at id le and then shut it off .
- Wait approx. two minutes.
- Pull ou t the oil dipst ick. Wipe off the oil dipstick with a
clean cloth, and s lide it back in as far as it will go .
- Pull it back out and read off the oil level =>
page 221,

The oil level needs to be checked at regular intervals . The best times
to do this are whenever you refue l and prior to long trips .
Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and the operating condi­
tions, oil consumption can be up to 1 quart per 1.200 mi les (1 liter
per 2.000 km). Consumption may be higher within the first 3 .000
miles (5.000 km) .•

• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust system when the

• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil , you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly.

The engine oi l must be changed according to the interva ls specified

because the lubricating properties of oi l d iminish g radua lly during
no rma l vehicle use .

frequently. Change oil more often if yo u drive most ly short
dista nces, opera te th e ve hicle i n dusty areas or under predo mi­
nantly stop -and-go traffic conditions, or have your vehicle where

De tergent additives in th e oil will make fr esh oi l loo k dar k aft er the
eng ine ha s been ru nning f or a sho rt ti me. T his i s no rm al and is not
a reason to c hange th e o il more ofte n than reco mme nde d.
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along with the spec ial
to ols an d necessa ry ex pertise requ ired, we stro ngly reco mmend
that you have your oi l cha nged by an authorized
Audi dealer or a
q ua lif ied serv ice s ta tio n.
If you choose to change your oil yourself , please note the following
impo rtant infor mati on:
& WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury if you must change the engine
oil in your vehicle yourself :
• Wear eye protection .
• To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine oil , let the engine
cool down to the touch.
• When removing the oil drain plug with your fingers , stay as far
away as possible . Always keep your forearm parallel to the ground
to help prevent hot oil from running down your arm .
• Drain the oil into a container designed for this purpose, one
large enough to hold at least the total amount of oil in your engine .
• Engine oil is poisonous . Keep it well out of the reach of children . _,,,

• Before changing your oil, first make sure you know where you
can proper ly dispose of t he used oil.
• Always dispose of used engine oil properly . Do not dump it on
garden soil, wooded areas, into open strea ms or down sewage
drains .
• Recycle used eng ine oi l by taking it to a used eng ine oi l collec ­
tion facility in your area, or contact a service station. •
Engine cooling system
Coolant
The e ngine coolant perfor ms tw o functions: i t kee ps the
en gine from overheatin g and i t pro tects the engi ne from
freezing in the winter.
The cooling system is sea led and general ly requires litt le attention.
The coo ling sys tem has been f illed at the factory with a permanen t
coo lant which does not need to be changed. The coolant consists of
a mixture of water and the ma nufacturer 's glyc ol- basedco olan t
additive
G12++ antifreeze w ith anti corrosion additives (50% for USA models; 60% for Canadian mode
ls) . T his mixture both assures the
n ecessary fros t pr otection a nd protects metal co mpo nents in the
engine's cooling system from corrosion and scaling. It also raises
t he boil ing point of the coolant .
Do not reduce the concentration of the coo lant in the su mmer by
adding plain water.
The proportion of coolant additive mu st be at
lea st 50 % but not more than 60 %
to maintai n antifreeze pro tection
and cooling efficiency. If the coolant frost protection is too low, the
coo la nt co uld free ze and damage the vehic le heating and engine
coo ling system .
For year-round driving, antifree ze is added at the factory for temper­
atures down to:
• - 31 °F ( -35 °C) USA
• -40 °F ( -40 °C) Canada.
You can mix the
G 12+ + coolant additive with other additives (G12+
or G12). Always check w ith your authorized Audi dealer.

• Before winter sets in, have the coolant checked to see if the
coo lant additive in your vehicle is suff icient to meet the c limate
co nd itions . This is e special ly impor tant i f you live in a region where
the winter is extremely cold. If necessary, increase the proportion of coo lant additive t o 60%.
• When adding coolant additive to your cooling system,

- We recommend using on ly coolant additive

reduce corrosion protection. The resu lting corrosion can cause a
loss of coolant and serious engine damage.
• Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant to your vehicle's
engine coolant. Adding radiator repair fluid may adverse ly affect the
function and performance of your cooling system and cou ld result
in damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty. •
Checking the engine coolant level
The engine coolant level can be checked with a quick
gla nce .

- Switch the ignition of f.
- Read the coo lant l eve l at the coo lant exp ansio n tank
==> fig. 142. With a col d e ngine, it must b e above the
"min" mar k. Wit h a hot engine, it can be a little above t he
indicated range.
The location of the coolant expansion tank can be seen in the
engine compartment i llustration. To obtain an accurate reading, the engine must be switched off.

coolant level sensor.
When the coolant leve l is too low, the warning light in the Auto ­
Check System =>
page 34 will blink un til you add coolant and the
level has been restored to normal. Even though there is an e lectric
coo la n t level sensor, we still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time .
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling system . In the event
of coo lant loss, the co oling sys tem shou ld be i nspected immedi­
ate ly by your authorized Audi dealer . It is not enough merely to add
coo lant .
In a
sealed system , losses can occur only if the boiling point of the
coolant is exceeded as a result of overheating .

Do not add any type of radiator leak sea lant to your vehicle's engine

• the engine compartment heats up because the vehicle is parked
in intense sunlight.
& WARNING
• To reduce the risk of personal injury never touch the radiator
fan.
• The auxiliary electric fan is temperature controlled and can
switch on suddenly even when the engine is not running .
• The auxiliary radiator fan switches on automatically when the
engine coolant reaches a certain temperature and will continue to
run until the coolant temperature drops. •
Brake fluid
Checking brake fluid level
The brake fluid level can be checked with a quick glance.

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS=> & in "Working in

-Read the brake fluid level from the brake fluid reservoir
=> fig. 143. The brake fluid level must be between the
"MIN" and "MAX" markings.
The brake fluid reservoir is located behind the rear partition of the
engine compartment on the left side~ page 218.
The fluid level may drop slightly after some time due to the auto ­
matic adjustment of the brake pads. This is not cause for alarm.
If the brake fluid level falls considerably below the "MIN" mark, the
brake warning/indicator light (U.S. models:
BRAKE, Canadian models:
(Cf))) will come on~ page 19 and~ page 33. Do not continue to
operate the vehicle. The complete brake system should be thor­
oughly checked by an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
facility and the cause corrected. If the brake fluid level is too low, the
brake warning/indicator light will illuminate. Contact an authorized
Audi dealer
immediately. •
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experienced techni­
cian.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. If the water content in the
brake fluid is too high, corrosion in the brake system may result
after a period of time . The boiling point of the brake fluid will also
decrease considerably and decrease braking performance.
Therefore, the brake fluid must be changed
every two years. Always
use new brake fluid which conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle Stan­
dard "FMVSS 116 DOT 4".
The brake fluid reservoir can be difficult to reach, therefore, we
recommend that you have the brake fluid changed by your autho­
rized
Audi dealer. Your dealer has the correct tools, the right brake
fluid and the know-how to do this for you.

mend that you have the brake fluid changed by your authorized Audi

Battery
General information
Your vehicle is equipped with a specia l battery, an AGM battery. This
ba ttery is loca ted in the luggage compar tment and must be
replaced with an original equipment battery. Under normal oper­
ating conditions, the battery is
ma inten anc e-free .
Have the battery checked when you take your vehicle in for service .
You a re well advised to replace a battery that is o lder than 5 years .
Disconn ecting th e batt ery te rmin als
Some vehicle functions (power w indow regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery terminals are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again. To prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehic le electrical sys tem when abso lutely necessary for repairs .
Vehi cles not dri ven for lo ng p eriods
If you are going to let your vehic le stand for a long time and n ot
drive it, you should remember there are e lectrica l components
whic h are still functioning and they will draw energy from the
battery and drain it, for example, the engine immobilizer. To prevent
t his, you can eithe r charge the batte ry occasionally to keep it in
good working condition or you can disconnect the negative cable
on the battery.
W int er op erati on
During the winter months, batte ry capacity tends to decrease as
temperatures drop . This is because more power is also consumed
whi le starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc ., are
used more often.
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when trave ling o nly short distances . Let your authorized Audi dealer
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter sets in
~ page 232. A we ll charged battery will not only preven t starting
problems when the weather is cold, but will also last longer.
Repla cing batter y
The new battery must hav e the same capacity, voltage ( 12 volts),
amperage, construction and p lug sea ling, as the orig inal battery .
Specifications are listed on the battery housing. Batteries specia lly
developed by Aud i fulfill the main tenance, output, and safe ty

The battery acid level in the battery can be checked
through the clear inspection window.

On top of the battery, there is a round "window". This
window (magic eye) c hanges color as the batte ry charge
and acid leve l change .

Air bubbles in the window can cause an inaccurate reading. Care ­
fully tap on the side of the window.

green , the battery acid level is correct .

no color or is bright yellow , the battery acid
level is too low. Have the battery tested by your authorized Audi
dea ler or a qual ified workshop .
• If the window is
bla ck , then the battery is insufficiently charged.
