Turning on and off [ECON ON/OFF]
Turning th e air conditioning on
- Press [ECON ON /OF F], or
- Press
[AUTO].
Turning the air conditioning off
-Press the [ECON ON /OFF] button to switc h the air condi ­
tion ing off and to block the air supply from the
outside. "OF F" appea rs in the display.
Sw itching air c onditionin g on /off
- Switching the air conditioning system on/off is done with
climate contro l switched on.
- Press the
[ECON ON /OFF] button just briefly.
The air conditioner turns back on if you press one of the control
buttons or the contro l knob .
ECON operation is indicated by the glowing LED on the right next to
the word ECON.
The air conditioning (compressor) is turned off in ECON mode .
"ECON" means "Economy" . You save fuel by switching off the air
conditioning=>
page 109 .
Please note that vehicle interior temperature cannot be lower than
the outside temperature in the ECON mode . The air is no t coo led or
dehumid ified. This can cause the windows to fog up.

Residu al he at: With the ignition turned off, you can activate the
residual heat function by pressing the !ECON ON /OFF] button . The
residual heat from the coo lant can be used to heat the vehic le inte-

Automatic mode [AUTO]
The automatic mode is the standard setting for all
seasons .
- Select temperature between 60 °F ( +16 °C) and 84 °F
(+28 °C).
- Press
[AUTO ].
Automatic operation ensures constant tempera tures in the interior
and dehumidifies the air inside the vehicle. Air temperature , volume
and d is tribution are controlled automatically to reach or maintain
the desired interior temperature as quickly as possible . F luctua tions
in exterior temperature and the effects of temperature from the
position of the sun are compensated for automatically .
This operating mode works only in the adjustable temperature
range, from 60 °F (+ 16 °C) to 84 °F ( +28 °C). If a temperature below
60 ° F
(+ 16 °C) is selected, LO appears in the display . At temperatures
above 84 °F (+28 °C),
HI is displayed . At both ex treme settings,
climate control runs continuous ly at maximum cooling or heating
power . There is no temperatu re regulation. •

Rear window defogger 4W
Press the QW switch to turn the rear w indow defogger on
and off .
The rear window defogger works only when the engine is running .
The light in the switch will illuminate when the defogger is on .
The rear window defogger wi ll switch off automatically after a short
time. The time the rear window defogger remains on wi ll vary
depending on the outside temperature .
At very low outside temperatures, the rear window defogger can switched on continuously by pushing the
QlP button for more than 2
seconds. This remains stored unti l the ignition is switched off .
A rear window defogger that was switched on also remains stored
fo r 15 minutes after the ignition is switched off . If the engi ne is
restarted within these 15 minutes, the rear window defogger is also
ac tiva ted, depend ing on outside temperature . With a veh ic le that is
parked for a short time, the rear window defogger does not need to
be manually activated again.
<£> For the sake of the environment
Turn the defogger off when the rear window is clear. When you save electricity, you save fuel. •

If the climate control system is opera ting in cooling mode, air flows
primari ly from the out lets in the center console and in the door
pillars. To achieve adequate cooling, you should never close the
out lets comp letely. •
Using climate control economically
Using the climate controls prudently can hel p save fuel.
When you use the air condi tioner, engine power is reduced
and fuel c onsum ption increases. T o save fuel, you should
use the a ir condit io ner onl y when necessa ry. Also please
note the fo llow ing po ints:
If you want to save fuel, activate ECON.
- If you are going to drive with the windows open, use
ECO N.
- If the ve hicle is ext remely hot due to the heat of the sun,
brie fly open doors and windows.

By reducing the amount of fuel you use, you a lso reduce the amount
of pollutants emitted into the a ir. •

ECON
The ECON mode helps to save fuel.
The air conditioning is turned off in ECON mode. "ECON" means
"Economy". By switching off the air conditioning (compressor), you
save fuel.
Please note that vehicle interior temperature cannot be lower than
the outside temperature in the ECON mode. The air is not cooled or dehumidified.
If the vehicle interior becomes too hot or if the windows fog up,
ECON mode should be turned off. As soon as the
jAUTO I button in
the air conditioning controls is pressed, the system automatically leaves the ECON mode, and the air conditioning compressor is
turned on again. •
Automatic recirculation mode
An air quality sensor detects increased concentrations of
pollutants in the outside air and automatically switches
to recirculation mode.
We recommend that you always keep automatic air recirculation ON
to prevent polluted outside air from entering the vehicle interior.
If the
air quality sensor located in the air conditioning system
detects polluted outside air, the sensor decides whether the air
pollution can be reduced by the factory -installed pollutant filter or
whether it is necessary to switch to air recirculation. With heavy concentrations of pollutants, the air conditioning system is
switched automatically to recirculation mode and the supply of
outside air is blocked. As soon as the concentration of pollutants in
the outside air drops, fresh air is supplied to the vehicle interior
again.
In the event that the windows fog up during automatic air recircula ­
tion, you must press the® button immediately. Under certain operating conditions, automatic air recirculation is
switched off automatically. With outside temperatures below about
+ 10
°C, automatic air recirculation is limited to 30 seconds. With
outside temperatures below about -1 °C and in the ECON mode,
automatic air recirculation is limited to 15 seconds. •
Synchronization
One climate control setting for the passenger's and
driver's seats.
After Synchronization is set to on, all of the subsequent climate
control settings (except for seat heating*) for the driver are trans ­
ferred to the front passenger.
Synchronization is canceled when settings are adjusted on the front passenger's side. •
Center air vent
The temperature of the air leaving the center vents can be
changed to differ from the temperature setting.

• You can apply the parking brake at any time - even with the igni­
tion turned off. The ignition must be turned on in order to release
the parking brake .
• Occasional noises when the parking brake is applied and
released are normal and are not a cause for concern .
• The parking brake goes through a self -test cycle at regular inter ­
vals - when the vehicle is parked . Any associated noises are
normal. •
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are a
few things you should do.
When you park your vehicle, do the following
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Pull the switch to apply the electromechanical parking
brake.
- Move the selector lever into the
P position ~& .
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignition key from
the ignition lock.
When you park your vehicle on hills, do the
following - Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Pull the switch to apply the electromechanical parking
brake.
- If you are parking headed downhill, turn the front wheels
toward the curb. - If you are
parking headed uphill, turn the front wheels
awayfrom the curb.
- Move the selector lever into the P position .
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignition key from
the ignition lock.
& WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of injury when leaving your
vehicle.
• Never park the vehicle where it can come in contact with dry
grass, spilled fuel or any other flammable materials.
• When parking on hills, always turn the wheels so that the front
wheels will first roll into the curb, if the vehicle should start to roll.
• Never allow anyone -especially small children -to remain in the
vehicle when it is locked. Locked doors make it more difficult for
rescuers to access the passenger compartment in the event of an
emergency. Danger to life!
• Never leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. Children
could release the parking brake or move the gearshift lever out of
gear. The vehicle could start to roll away and cause an accident.
• No matter what the season is, the temperature in a parked
vehicle can reach dangerous levels.

• Please exercise care when you park your vehicle in parking areas
with parking barriers or curbs. Parking barriers and curbs vary in height and could damage your bumper and related components as
the front of your vehicle moves over a barrier or curb that is too
high, as you park or as you back out of a parking spot. In order to be
sure that no such damage can occur, you may wish to stop short of
having the front tires of your car touch the parking barrier or curb . ..,_

Automatic selec tor lever lo ck
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the igni ­
tion is turned on. To move the leve r from these positions the driver
must depress the brake peda l. As a reminder to the dr iver , the
following warn ing app ears in the instrument c luster display when
t h e selector is in
P and N :

A time de lay e lement prevents the se lector lever from lock ing when
it is moved through the
N position (going from R to Dl. The locking
e lement will lock the selector lever if the l eve r is l eft in N (Neutral)
for more than approximately 1 second , without the brake pedal
being pressed.
At speeds above ab out 3 mph (5 km/h) the Automatic Shift Lock is
automatically deac tivated in the
N position .
Interlo ck button
The lock bu tton on the s elector lever prev ents the lever from being
accidentally shifted into certain positions . Press ing this bu tton
deac tivates the selec tor lever lock . Depending on the dir ection of
t he shift, the se lector lever locks at diffe rent positions . The positions
are highlighted in the illustration~
page 157, fig. 159 .
Ignition key safet y interlock
The k ey cannot be remov ed from the igni tion un less the selector
lever is in the
P park p osition. When the ign ition key is removed, the
selector lever wil l be locked in the
P position. •

Kick-down
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to generate
maximum acceler ation.
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond the resistance po int
that is reached at fu ll thrott le, the transmission will se lect a lower
gear rat io based on vehicle speed and engine RPM . The engine RPM
wi ll be contro lled to produce max imum vehicle acceleration as long
as you continue to press the accelerator pedal beyond this resis­
tance point .

Dynamic shift program (DSP)
The aut om atic tr a nsmission is electronically controlled.
T he transmission is self adapting and wi ll automati cally se lect the
b est shift program suited to the driving condi tions and drivi ng s tyle.
The transmission wil l se lect one of the
e conom y programs when
you drive at a steady speed or a gradually changing speed withou t
heavy acceleration . This achieves optimum fuel efficiency, with early
upshifting and delayed downshifting.
The trans mission wil l au tomat ical ly select the
sporty shift programs
when you drive at higher speeds, or with heavy acce leration and
frequently changing speeds . Upshifts ar e delayed to make full use
of engine power . Down shifting takes place at higher engine speeds
t han in the economy programs . _.,

The selection of the most suitable shift program is a continuous,
automatic process. The driver can also make the transmission
switch to a sporty program by
q u ickly pressing down the gas pedal.
This causes the transmission to shift down to a lower gear to achieve rapid acceleration, e.g. for quickly passing another vehicle.
You do not need to press the gas pedal into the kick -down range .
After the transmission has upshifted, the orig inal program is
selected according to your driving style.
An additional shift program allows the automatic transmission to select the proper gear for uphill and downhill gradients .
This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unneces ­
sarily on hills. The transmission will shift down to a lower gear when
the driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient. This
makes use of the braking effect of the engine without the need to
shift down manually .•

When accelerating, the transmission will automatica lly shift into
gears 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 before the engine reaches its maximum RPM.
If you app ly a light throttle when accelerating, tiptronic ® will auto ­
matical ly shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If you apply a heavy
throttle, the transmission w ill stay in 1st gear until near maximum
RPM is reached , or until the driver shifts into 2nd gear .
If you take your foot off the accelerator peda l when driving down a
steep inc line, tiptronic ® will downshi ft from the selected gear into
the next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear, based on road speed
and engine RPM. Automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as
you apply the throttle again.
